*SPOILER WARNING*
This episode was a slight improvement on the premiere, but not by much.
This biggest problem with this episode is that it was entirely focused on the Whisperers. Now, if the Whisperers were entertaining villains, then this would be a welcome break from our main cast of characters. However, the Whisperers are not interesting. They are simply, for lack of a better word, weird. Here is the list of problems that drag down our “menacing” villains:
1) Alpha and her philosophy make no sense. She obviously has, no matter how much she represses or hides it, some amount of love for her daughter, as seen in this episode. However, the only reason she lost her daughter is because of her abusive behavior and her odd philosophy that people must “become the dead”. This would be understandable if we knew why she thinks that people must become like zombies, but we have no clue as to why she thinks this. She just does.
2) What do the Whisperers want? What’s their agenda? So far, all we’ve seen them do is aimlessly walk among zombies and terrorize our survivors when they cross the “border”. What are they seeking?
3) This is somewhat related to the first problem, but not identical: Are Alpha and Beta simply insane? In the flashbacks, it appeared that both were crazy from the get go. If this is true, then the Whisperers have no agenda, and the only reason Alpha does what she does is because she’s gone mad. This is precisely why they are so boring.
Beta’s story was quite boring as well. He went insane after losing his best friend, and thus decided to wear his friend’s reanimated face and walk around with zombies. The whole story is just silly.
The one thing I did like about this episode was Gamma and her sister’s story. Unlike Alpha, Gamma’s sister could not be broken, and her love for her daughter persevered.
Overall, this episode was another miss. The Whisperers are just boring.
Verdict: 5/10
