Sometimes murder is mercy.
―Amanda's belief that she passed down to her son.[src]

Amanda is a main character and an antagonist, as well as a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's Tales of the Walking Dead. She served as the secondary antagonist of the episode "Davon".

Overview

Amanda initially seems to be a kind and generous woman. She and Nora had saved Davon and treated his wounds. She also seemingly was a strong leader, as Nora says that Amanda had helped "organize them".

However, it's later revealed that Amanda is a cold and hardened woman who has a very cynical view of the world. After the death of her husband and the near-death of her son, she became overprotective of him and developed the philosophy that "murder is mercy", a philosophy that she passed down to her son. Amanda's influence leads Arnaud to murder the town's children as a way to prevent them from witnessing the horrors of the world, including some of the ruthless actions made by the townspeople. Amanda did very little to stop Arnaud from committing these heinous actions and even tried to cover up for him, going as far as allowing her own nephew to be killed. Eventually, Davon discovers Amanda's secret, which leads to a fight that ends with Amanda's brutal death.

Pre-Apocalypse

Madawaska, Maine

Nothing is known about Amanda's life prior to or as the outbreak began, except that she lived in Madawaska, Maine, with her husband, son, and extended family.

Post-Apocalypse

When the outbreak began, the surviving inhabitants of Madawaska were organized and led by Amanda. The townspeople built a gate around a portion of the town and locked themselves in, creating a safe haven from the undead world.

At some point, Madawaska fell into wartime.[1] During this, Amanda's husband and son ventured beyond the wall, where the former was subsequently killed, while Arnaud narrowly escaped death. Traumatized by the horrors of this event, Amanda became extremely overprotective of her son and developed a philosophy that "murder is mercy", insisting that certain individuals, both innocent and guilty, don't deserve to be alive due to the hopelessly anarchic and lawless state of the world. Having instilled this belief in her grief-ridden son, he would go on into his early adulthood and finally act on it when Amanda caught him with a kidnapped boy from town one day in their basement. Amanda attempted to stop Arnaud from "freeing" the boy, believing that killing him would spare him from experiencing the same atrocities he underwent upon growing up in the apocalypse, though she soon realized they'd be unable to conceal Arnaud's secret by letting him go, and the two left the boy in the woods to die instead. Over the next few months, Arnaud continued his killing spree in secret, even going as far as kidnapping his own cousin with Amanda as his accomplice.

During the fight, Davon accidentally pushes Amanda's face into a tray of acid, which severely burns and melts her face, causing her death. She later reanimates.
