Ash Patel is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. He is an airplane pilot who befriends Carol during her search for Daryl. He is also the father of Avi Patel.
Overview[]
Ash is a skilled, helpful individual with a hardened past. During the outbreak, his son was killed by walkers, leading Ash to create a memorial for him at his safe zone. While Ash enjoys flying his plane around at times, he never goes to far in order to stay close to his son. When he encounters Carol, he is willing to help her travel to France after she tells him her daughter might still be alive there, although this is a lie. He is similar to Carol, both having lost their children.
Although never experiencing much violence or killing anyone in his 13 years in the outbreak, Ash ends up killing Hanna, unaware she had changed her antagonistic ways.
After leaving his home in America, Ash explains to Carol that traveling to France forced him to leave his son's memories behind and sort of move on from his death. However, when Carol finally confesses to Ash the real reason why she convinced him to take her to France was to find Daryl, Ash becomes enraged, as he realized he left his home and son's memories behind for nothing. Despite this, he forgives Carol and is willing to take her and Laurent back to America with Daryl suggesting that Ash can still save a child, even if it's not the one that he had expected. Although initially cold to Daryl, angry because Carol had used Ash to find him, he later warms up to him, accepting his help on fixing the plane and even demonstrating what he's doing for Daryl.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Boston, Massachusetts[]
Ash Patel lived in Boston, Massachusetts as an engineer before the outbreak and had a wife. During their marriage, they had a weekend home in Maine. With his wife, they had a son named Avi. Ash's wife left shortly after Avi was born, leaving Ash to raise him alone.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Maine[]
Following the outbreak, Ash moved to his weekend home in Maine with Avi and transformed it into a self-sustaining farm. Sometime after the outbreak, Avi left the farm and was bitten by a zombie.
Season 2[]
"La Gentillesse Des Étrangers"[]
At night, Carol sneaks up on the farm where the plane landed at and observes Ash, quickly hiding when she accidentally steps on a branch and draws Ash's attention. Carol finds the main gate locked with a keycode and witnesses a rabbit hit a tripwire, causing a metal grating to swing down and kill the rabbit. Near the grating are two decayed corpses who had also triggered the trap, presumably either walkers or intruders. Stepping carefully around the trap, Carol places herself behind the grating and yells for help. Ash warns Carol that she's going to draw walkers, and Carol calls it a very secure perimeter. Ash demands to know what she's doing snooping around his property and Carol insists that she doesn't want any trouble, explaining that she had crashed her car and asking if Ash has a first aid kit. While Ash has no reason to help her, he seems like a really nice person and Carol would like to think that even in the world that they live in, they can rely on the kindness of strangers. After Carol swears that she's alone, Ash agrees to get her fixed up, but then she must leave. Ash opens the main gate with a remote and he warns Carol that he will shoot her if she makes one false move.
At a small mirror, Carol cleans her head wound up and the two introduce themselves to each other. The power goes out, and Ash explains that he has problems with his generator and the power goes out from time to time. Ash gets the power back on, and Carol asks if he's ever hit a walker with his car, calling him lucky when Ash says that he hasn't as Carol thinks that she smashed the radiator on her car. Hearing this, Ash offers to let Carol spend the night as there's no use in walking now. Ash leads her to the barn, causing Carol to have a flashback of a zombified Sophia emerging from the barn on Hershel's farm which mixes with a hallucination of the present day Carol seeing Sophia approach her and touch her mother's arm before a shot rings out. Ash notices her strange reaction, but Carol just brushes it off. Carol spots the plane that she had seen flying overhead earlier outside of the other end of the barn and Ash directs her where to sleep. Ash confirms that he's the pilot of the plane, stating that while the noise attracts the dead, it's worth it just to get up above everything for a little while each day.
The next day, Ash wakes Carol up and gives her a bowl of food. Carol asks Ash if he can help her with her car today, explaining that she had crashed it about a half mile down the road at the drive-in. Ash agrees to take look this afternoon, telling Carol that when he takes his plane up at 3:00 he'll look for abandoned cars for parts to fix it up with. Carol hopes that she's not keeping him, guessing that Ash has better things to do than to fly around the area looking for car parts. Ash admits that he never ventures too far because, while he could go anywhere, he has everything that he needs here. Ash's watch alarm suddenly goes off, causing Ash to panic and run to his greenhouse.
Ash takes off for his daily flight, drawing a herd to the gates with all of the noise. Carol takes advantage of Ash being gone to look around, although she is unable to get into the locked greenhouse. Carol locates a world map, and she finds France on it before the power goes out again, causing the gate to open, letting the herd in. Rather than restoring the power, Carol -- unaware of the danger -- takes advantage of the power being out to enter the greenhouse where she finds a large tree surrounded by candles and children's toys, the initials "A.P." carved into it, and a picture of a young boy displayed: the boy's grave. Carol plays with an old music box that plays "You Are My Sunshine," reminding Carol of her lost daughter, making her cry.
Hearing Ash's plane returning, Carol goes to leave, only to have the herd enter the greenhouse and break in through the glass panels. Quickly becoming surrounded, Carol barricades herself in between a group of shelves and then climbs them to break out a skylight in order to escape. Outside, Ash furiously demands to know what the hell Carol did. After the two dispatch the herd, Ash removes the bodies from the greenhouse, rejecting Carol's attempts to help him. Ash demands to know what Carol was thinking as she had no right to come inside of the greenhouse. Carol apologizes and tries to reassure Ash that nothing had happened to the grave, but he doesn't care. Ash finally agrees to let Carol clean up, ordering her to get out once she does. Once Carol finishes removing the bodies, she finds Ash at the grave and tells him that all of the bodies are outside of the perimeter now and she explains that she was curious about him. While it's not an excuse, Carol just thought that if she knew him better, they could become friends which is something that Carol has been missing: a friend. Ash tells Carol that friends aren't what he misses, and Carol promises to be on her way once she's finished cleaning up.
Ash finally opens up to Carol, revealing that the grave is that of his son, Avi Patel. Avi died when he was 7 on April 19th at 8:23 am. Every morning at that exact time, Ash sits with his son, and he apologizes for letting Avi wander off, not being able to save him and for not protecting him like a parent is supposed to protect their child. When Avi died, Ash made a place for him here to keep him safe. Avi's mom left when he was a baby, so it was all up to Ash to raise and protect his son. Avi loved planes and Ash came across a crashed Beechcraft in a nearby field about a month after he died, and it felt like a sign to him. As a result, Ash brought it back one piece at a time, found some manuals, and figured out how to put it back together. Carol realizes that Ash doesn't want to leave his son and that's why he just flies around this area. "It was never about going anywhere in particular. Just up... high enough so that when I look down, I can almost trick myself into thinking the world is... still the same. Almost," states Ash. Carol boards up the broken windows and asks Ash if she can head out in the morning instead. Ash tells Carol that he's about to sit down for dinner, and he invites her to join him.
At dinner, Carol is briefly taken aback to see a cherokee rose on the table, remembering when Daryl gave her one, telling Carol that he believes that it had bloomed for Sophia. Ash asks where Carol intends to go and if there's anyone waiting for her, before realizing that it's not her business. Carol explains that she was married to a man named Ed and that they had a difficult marriage right from the get-go. Then their daughter Sophia came along, and Carol comments that it's funny how in life something so bad can lead to something so good. Carol lies that right before the world turned upside-down, Ed took Sophia to visit his aunt in Europe while Carol had never been to a foreign country before and she had never even had a passport, but "here's Sophia, barely 12, just flitting around France with her dad." When everything happened, Carol tried to reach her daughter a bunch of times, but she never heard from her again. Ash realizes that Carol wants him to fly her to France to find her daughter and that she had lied to him. Carol asks him if Ash knew that Avi was out there, wouldn't he do whatever it took to find him. However, Ash tells her that Avi isn't and is furious that Carol had been lying to him all along. The next day, Carol leaves with Ash barely sparing her a glance from where he's cleaning the outside of the greenhouse.
Ash drives up to Carol and tells her that he would do anything to find Avi like any parent would, but the question is would Carol search for him, to give up everything to look for somebody that she hasn't met. Carol states that if there was a hope of finding them alive, then yes, she would. Ash points out that they're talking about flying a plane across the ocean with no communication, no weather forecast, and no idea what's waiting for them on the other side, but Carol tells him that it was her only option, and she couldn't do nothing. Ash asks why she's going now, what had changed, and Carol explains that she couldn't keep waiting, feeling stuck. Carol had to move forward, she had to at least try. Ash finally agrees to help her, telling Carol to hop in the truck and that they have work to do.
Ash and Carol map out their flight plan with Ash suggesting heading north hugging the coast, pit stopping in Greenland and minimizing their time over the open sea. They can switch out the ethanol tanks in Greenland and Ash reveals that he's made a massive supply of ethanol as Ash has got a lot of time on his hands. As they work on his plants, Ash asks where Carol would even start to look, and Carol tells him that she has an address for Ed's aunt where they were staying which can act as a starting point for her search. Ash suggests that Sophia could still be there which would be amazing, but Carol will have to remind herself that there's a chance that she won't be, and she may not even be still alive. Ash is more optimistic about Sophia's chances and he's glad that Carol still has that. Once Carol turns away from her new friend, her face falls, obviously upset by her continuing to deceive Ash so that he'll help her when Sophia is actually dead, and Carol is really looking for Daryl. As Ash performs maintenance on the plane, Carol confirms with him that he's sure that he wants to do this, to leave his home and Avi. Ash tells her that when his son died, he didn't leave the house for months and when Ash did, he found the plane which saved him. "If you're not moving forward, then you're dying."
In Maine, a thunderstorm begins to move in fast, so Ash and Carol begin to load up the plane, planning to go inside afterwards. Ash tells Carol that he often wonders if Avi were still alive, would he be obsessed with planes, or if he would've moved onto something else. Ash asks Carol what she thinks Sophia's into now, but Carol doesn't know, though she does wonder, and tells Ash that there's so much that she doesn't know. A lightning strike knocks out the generator, allowing a massive herd to get through the gates and onto the property. Flying sparks ignites Ash's supply of ethanol, threatening to set the plane on fire. With the herd approaching, Carol and Ash have no choice but to fly out immediately.
Carol, who has never flown before, works to calm herself as she and Ash frantically prepare the plane. Ash tells Carol that there's no time for them to clear a path. As walkers flood Ash's property, Carol shoves one into the plane's propellor and finally boards it, trying to keep herself calm. The plane taxies through the herd, hitting several walkers and successfully taking off into the sky. Ash helps Carol to center herself and they fly above the clouds to see a beautiful sunrise.
"Moulin Rouge"[]
Trailing smoke, Ash's Plane lands in a field in Greenland. Getting out of the plane, Ash accidentally knocks a Flare Gun out onto the wing and he puts it on the floor just inside of the door. Ash grabs what he needs to repair the plane's busted fuel line and admits that he's surprised that they're still alive. Carol spots a small herd of three walkers approaching and instructs Ash to work on the fuel leak while she takes care of the walkers. Walking closer, Carol shoots two of them with Daryl's Crossbow, but before she can shoot the third one, a lurker pops up out of the ground and grabs Carol, yanking her off of her feet. Struggling to keep the lurker off of her, Carol draws her knife, but a second lurker pops up out of the ground behind her and restrains Carol's hand. Carol yells for Ash and manages to kick the first lurker off of her. Ash comes to her rescue, bashing the second lurker over the head with a pipe wrench, allowing Carol to stab the first one. The final walker grabs Ash, but it's shot from a distance by Hanna. "Welcome to Greenland," calls Eun. Ash is excited to see other survivors, but Carol is more wary of the new people.
Walking through the hills in Greenland, Eun introduces herself and Hanna and Ash thanks the two women for their help. Hanna tells them that it wasn't the best landing spot as the field is full of Tupilag which is what they call the walkers after an old Inuit myth. In mythology, Tupliag is a flesh-eating beast conjured up to take revenge on its enemy and if it can't find them, then Tupilag returns home to kill its maker. Eun notes that Carol and Ash are the first people that they've seen in years, and they thought that they were dreaming when they heard the plane. Ash explains that there's a crack in the fuel lines, meaning that it was more like a nightmare for them. Ash can fix it if he can find the right supplies and Eun is sure that they've got something that he'll be able to use. Reaching the top of a hill, Hanna points to a research station in the distance.
The two women lead Carol and Ash to the research station and show them the reindeer that they have cooking. Eun shows Ash to the storeroom to look for supplies while Hanna offers Carol a drink, although she refuses. Ash returns, having found some speed tape which should work, and Hanna suggests that he go ahead while she'll come along in awhile with some food that Carol and Ash can take with them. Carol offers her help which Hanna accepts, and Carol decides to take her up on that drink. Once Ash and Eun are gone, Hanna reveals that she has orders to kill Carol from Eun, even though Hanna doesn't want to do it.
Making their way back to the plane, Ash explains that they're going to France because Carol is looking for her daughter. While Ash knows that the chances that Sophia survived aren't good, he isn't sure how to tell her that. If it were Ash's kid and there was even a shred of a chance, he would be doing the exact same thing. While Ash thinks that it sounds crazy, Eun thinks that it sounds beautiful. Ash admits that he had lost his own son, and Eun hugs him in consolation.
Ash works on repairing the fuel line, and Eun asks if he's ever thought about having more children. Realizing that the woman is serious, Ash asks what kind of a world this is to bring a child into, but Eun believes that if everyone felt that way, then humans would die out like we were never here. Hanna wants for civilization to end, but Eun wants to save it, and Ash is going to help her do that. Eun propositions the incredulous Ash for sex, telling him that they've done all of the calculations a thousand years out. "First me, then Hanna. We've even picked out baby names." Disturbed, Ash tells the deranged woman that she's gonna need to find somebody else, but Hanna tells him that there is nobody else. With the leak fixed, Ash decides to go and find Carol, but Eun aims her gun at him, telling him to forget about Carol as Hanna is going to kill her while Eun intends to take what she wants from Ash, even by force.
At night, Carol and Hanna walk through the foggy field back towards the plane with walkers wandering around nearby. Hanna tells Carol not to hesitate to shoot if something moves. Hanna notes that Ash seems kind, and Carol tells her that Ash has been through a lot, so Hanna states that Ash is lucky to have her. The two spot the plane and Hanna excitedly states that this is the first time in years that she's thought about the future and she'll finally get to use all of the French that she had learned in grade school. Suddenly, Ash -- who is chained to the plane's engine -- shoots Hanna in the neck with a flare gun, killing her. Carol comforts Ash who believes that Hanna was going to kill his friend, and Carol doesn't correct the assumption, simply telling Ash that she knows that he had to do it. Carol helps Ash to get free of the chain so that they can leave, leaving Hanna to reanimate.
In the air, Carol asks Ash if this was his first time killing a living person which he confirms, stating that he's been lucky enough to be left alone until now. "I've killed a lot of people. I remember all of them. It never goes away," Carol admits. Ash tells her to get some rest because they've still got a ways to go until they reach France.
Carol wakes up near sunset and Ash tells her that they're about a hundred miles inland. The plane has finally reached France, and he needs to find a place for them to land before they run out of options. Carol spots an abandoned race track which Ash uses as a landing strip. Looking around in awe, the two find a place to hide the plane in a garage area. Ash wants to find something to cover the plane up so that no one messes with it while they're gone, but Carol thinks that Ash should stay here, something that he objects to. However, Carol doesn't want to risk anything happening to the plane or to Ash. She doesn't want Ash getting hurt because of her as Carol is responsible for him. Ash states that he's responsible for himself, having made the decision to come to France because he wants to help Carol find her daughter. Carol argues that Ash will help her by getting them out of France when the time comes, which she will need both Ash and the plane for. Carol has been doing a lot of things on her own and she has been out in this world more than he has, so she's pretty good at taking care of herself. Ash finally concedes, telling Carol that they'll need fuel which could take awhile, so Carol tells him to work on getting the fuel for their departure back to America. While Carol hopes not to be gone too long, Ash is not to keep waiting if she isn't back in two weeks, but Ash refuses to leave without her. Carol accepts this, and promises to be back, giving Ash Daryl's crossbow for protection and safe keeping.
"Vouloir, C'est Pouvoir"[]
Daryl and Carol discover that Ash has barricaded the garage where he has the plane hidden with sheet metal and set up deadly traps inside in case of any intruders. Although there's no sign of Ash, Daryl finds two men caught in one of Ash's traps, one of whom is now a walker. Daryl stabs the walker in the head, while Carol questions Pierre, who is still barely alive, where Ash is. Pierre explains that Ash had left and never come back while Pierre and his companions had come to steal Ash's Plane. Pierre begs them to kill him and Daryl tells Carol that he'll handle it before stabbing Pierre in the head. Spotting another zombified man caught in one of Ash's traps, Daryl puts him down as well.
In a flashback, Ash flees from a herd at night, taking cover inside of an SUV. However, Ash can't get the engine started and the herd quickly begins to surround the vehicle. Attempting to get out, Ash is hit in the head with driver's side door and knocked unconscious when the walker outside shoving against causes the door to close on him. Ash is left unconscious in the SUV as an increasing number of walkers try to get at him.
Daryl and Carol later find two of Ash's gas cans at the Demimonde which were taken there as loot from the overrun and abandoned Maison Mère, suggesting that Ash had gone to Maison Mère looking for fuel.
At Maison Mère, Daryl spots a growing herd surrounding an SUV outside, suggesting that there's something alive inside. Outside, Daryl and Carol fight their way through the herd, running out of ammo for their larger weapons and switching to Daryl's Morning Star and a pistol respectively. The two are able to get into the SUV where they find Ash dazed, but still alive.
Ash is confused by the presence of Daryl as more and more walkers swarm the vehicle. Examining her friend, Carol thinks that he's just concussed and dehydrated, but nothing's broken. Carol only has a single bullet left and Daryl searches the SUV for anything useful, breaking open a case to find two disassembled dart guns and darts full of Amper Serum. Putting the guns together, Daryl admits that he has a bad idea and has Carol check the vehicle's battery which she confirms it still has, although the SUV won't be moving. However, Daryl just needs to crack a window, and he has Carol open the sunroof for him. Daryl shoots two zombified Guerriers that are on the outer edges of the herd with the serum, mutating them both into Ampers. After a moment, blood splatters the van on all sides as the Ampers tear apart the other walkers in order to get at the living humans inside of the SUV. Once the herd has been dispatched, one Amper breaks through the passenger side window and is shot by Carol while the second Amper breaks through the back window to attack Daryl. Daryl manages to pin the Amper up against the back of the passenger seat, and Carol stabs it in the head. Ash asks where Sophia is, but Carol just tells him that they need to get him out of here. With Daryl helping Ash to walk, the three carefully pick their way through the dismembered, decapitated and otherwise horrifically disabled walkers to safety.
At the race track, Carol tends to Ash before leaving to talk to Daryl who expresses his doubts about the plane being able to get them home, but Carol points out that it got them here. Carol estimates that they need 50 more gallons on top of what they already have to get back home, and Daryl pulls Carol aside to talk to her in private in the stands. Daryl tells Carol that she should tell Ash the truth, but Carol just wants Ash to get healthy before she breaks his heart. Daryl questions Carol's choice of lie and she admits that she had to be convincing, and she chose something that Carol wished was true. "And... he lost his son." Expressing understanding, Daryl tells Carol to get Ash ready to fly while he goes to get them the fuel that they need.
Carol works on the plane, impressing the recovered Ash. Ash realizes that Sophia isn't coming and she's dead which Carol confirms. Ash tries to comfort Carol, telling her that there was nothing that she could do about halfway across the world, but Carol isn't interested in talking about it and she tearfully apologizes to Ash for everything. Ash knows that it's easy for them as parents to blame themselves for the loss of his children, and reveals that during the days that he spent waiting for Carol to return, Ash got to thinking about how much this trip helped him to get past the guilt that Ash has been carrying about losing his son. Coming to France with Carol forced him to overcome it and live again which Ash is grateful to her for and he's only sorry that it didn't end better for her. Carol is visibly conflicted about the secret that she's keeping and the effect that is having on Ash.
Ash interrupts Carol's cleaning job on the plane, telling her that he doesn't think that she can get the front window any cleaner than that. Carol suggests that Ash should get some more rest, but Ash thinks that some activity will be good for him after being stuck in a car for two days. As Ash helps her, Carol expresses her appreciation for Ash making this trip with her and she's glad that he thinks that it was worth it. "The thing is, uh... I lied. I didn't come here looking for Sophia. I came here to look for Daryl. Sophia died 12 years ago," Carol confesses. To Carol, it's like her daughter never went away and it's like she never let her go because Carol never forgave herself. Carol knows that Ash shares that feeling and for Carol, that feeling has only gotten worse lately. When Carol met Ash, she told him what she had to to convince Ash to help her. Ash is furious at Carol for using her dead daughter to manipulate him, yelling that he believed in her and gave up his world, his home, his memory of Avi for her. Ash berates Carol that the ends don't justify the means and whatever comfort or bonding that they had earlier was meaningless because it was all based on Carol's lie to get his plane. Ash storms off, leaving Carol behind.
At the race track, Daryl shows Laurent the plane which the boy has only seen before in books. Laurent comments that up in the clouds, they'll be close to Isabelle, Sylvie and his mother who can watch over them. Carol tells Daryl that it didn't go so good, and the two introduce the boy to Ash and explain to Laurent that is going to fly them home. "Yeah, well, one small hitch. This plane will never get off the ground with all four of us. So, Paris, we have a problem," Ash reveals. Daryl and Carol are shocked by the revelation that someone will have to stay behind.
"Au Revoir Les Enfants"[]
In the garage, Ash works on the plane, and Carol approaches, telling Ash that she won't be coming with him. Instead, Carol wants Ash to take Daryl and Laurent. However, the furious Ash demands to know why he should help any of them after Carol brought him to France under bullshit pretenses. "You wanna punish me, I get it. But you won't be doing any worse than I'm already doing to myself. Please don't take it out on them," Carol implores her friend.
In the garage, Ash leaves without a word and Laurent tells Carol that he doesn't think that Ash likes him. Carol states that Ash has a lot on his mind which Laurent knows is because Carol lied to him, something that she feels bad about. While people shouldn't lie, Laurent is glad that Carol did as she might not be here and would Daryl if Carol had told Ash the truth. Carol recognizes that the boy has a really special way of seeing things, and assures him that Laurent is going to make a lot of friends at the Commonwealth. Laurent worries that Daryl will able to make it back by himself which Carol doesn't have an answer for.
In a parking garage below the stadium section of the race track, Ash searches a car for a hose long enough to run from an external tank so that they don't have to stop again. Having heard about the events in Greenland, Daryl tries to help Ash who rejects his assistance. Ash asks about Laurent and Daryl reveals that he's an orphan, apologizing for what had happened to Ash's son which Carol had told Daryl about. Daryl was there when Carol lost Sophia and he wouldn't wish that on anyone. "Yeah. You lose a... a wife or a husband, you're a widower, a widow. But if you lose a kid... there's no word for that," states Ash sadly and Daryl suggests that it's because that's too hard of a thing to name. After learning that Daryl doesn't have kids, Ash suggests that maybe it's a good thing that Daryl doesn't have that worry, but Daryl tells him that he worries about plenty. The two men move to search in another area that's gated off and Daryl states that Ash had come to France to save a kid. While Ash won't be saving the kid that he had expected, he can still do that by saving Laurent. Ash walks through the gate, but Daryl has to pull him back as a walker approaches. Ash quips that he guesses he is kind of glad that Daryl's coming with them, surprising Daryl.
As Daryl sharpens his knife, he watches as Ash teaches Laurent about the plane. Carol returns Daryl's Crossbow to him, joking that it was her one carry-on. Daryl already knows that Carol has come to discuss her staying instead, but Daryl refuses to let her do so. Carol argues that it's the right thing for everyone and she's going to get him home even if it means that she has to stay behind because if anything happens to Daryl, Carol won't be able to live with herself. Joining the argument, Ash tells Carol that Daryl is right: Daryl has been in France longer and he knows how to survive while Carol knows the plane and she can help him. Having been convinced to help them to save Laurent, Ash states that this is about whatever can get the kid back to a safe place. The argument is interrupted by the arrival of Stéphane and Fallou with the warning that Jacinta's still alive and that she's coming for Laurent. Having run out of time, Daryl, Stéphane and Fallou push the sheet metal wall down for an immediate departure. Ash and Daryl bring the plane outside where Ash tests the engine.
Taxing towards the makeshift runway, Ash is forced to stop because of a problem with air in the fuel line, this time accepting Daryl's help in repairs. Standing guard, Stéphane and Fallou notice a Guerrier on a motorcycle and warn the others of that they have incoming. Ash orders the others to give them some time to get down the runway and Daryl hugs Laurent, promising to see the boy again soon. Two Union soldiers open fire from the stands and, taking cover in a set of starting gates, Stéphane and Fallou take out both men. Daryl and Carol say a silent goodbye as she boards the plane, and Daryl orders them to go, joining Stéphane and Fallou. As the plane taxis to the end of the runway, the three men move the starting gates to serve as a barricade for them. Jacinta's vehicles drive onto the field and Stéphane throws a grenade at one, killing the driver and the gunner. Both sides take cover, with Stéphane's fire killing two more Union soldiers, including the passenger who survived the grenade thrown at his jeep. Reaching the end of the runway and seeing the gunfight, Carol asks Ash if they're good, which he confirms after looking at Laurent in the backseat holding his guitar.
As the plane begins taxing down the runway, Jacinta orders her men to move forward to stop it. The Guerrier on the motorcycle races after the plane, followed by Daryl. As the Guerrier shoots at the plane, Daryl takes up position and fires at the man, missing on the first try and killing him with the second shot. An ATV carrying two more Guerriers drives out in front of the plane and rushes headlong at it. Daryl takes aim at the driver, but he is forced to turn and shoot two Union soldiers who attack him from the side. Daryl takes aim again, but he is forced to quickly reload, having run out of bullets. Before Daryl can try again, the driver is suddenly shot from another angle, sending the ATV careening off of the runway. With the path clear, Ash makes it into the air, cheering "suck it, motherfucker!"
Laying in the grass on the other side of the runway, Carol looks at Daryl, having chosen to leave the plane at the last minute. Both sides stop firing, the battle coming to an end now that Laurent and Ash have escaped. Everyone watches as the plane flies overhead, on its way to America and Daryl and Laurent wave goodbye to each other.
