Post-Apocalypse[]
While trying to save a trapped Irene at the Travelier Motel, Lee Everett finds an awl in abandoned truck which he recognizes as a potential weapon to silently put down the nearby walkers. Managing to break the truck's window with porcelain from a broken spark plug, Lee retrieves the awl. Hiding in front of an RV, Lee attracts one walker's attention and then attacks it when it approaches. Lee's first blow only gets the walker in the chest, but his second strike gets it in the head, putting it down. A second walker approaches and attacks Glenn who hits the walker in the head with a board, giving Lee the chance to stab it with his awl. Lee then uses the awl to put down a walker that he'd pinned to a wall with a car earlier. However, when the walker's head falls forward, it smashes into the car's trunk, sending the tool all the way through the walker's head, leaving it stuck there. Instead, Lee grabs a nearby fire axe as a replacement weapon.
Two years later, Jane uses an awl, possibly stolen from Howe's Hardware during the Cabin Group's escape, against walkers at the Sunshine Village Mobile Home Park. Jane stabs Jon Sandusky and another man who had recently died in the head to prevent reanimation and then searches their corpses for anything useful with Clementine. Noticing how easily Clementine's hatchet gets stuck, Jane provides the young girl with a second awl as a better weapon and teaches her a trick involving incapacitating a walker before stabbing it in the back of the head. Although Clementine switches to the awl as her primary weapon, she still hangs onto her hatchet, using it to collapse the Parker's Run observation deck onto a herd.
For unknown reasons, Clementine eventually stops using both her awl and hatchet by the time that she meets the New Frontier.
