"Doomsday Clock"[]

It's possible Axel took part in the prison group's retaliation on Woodbury by blowing up the National Guard Station and raiding the local Walmart, then killing Bruce, Curtis and two other guards.

While searching for the prison, Gabe, Rudy and Gus hear gunfire coming from the west over the treeline. They creep through the woods adjacent to the two-lane and find Andrea, Maggie and Hershel outside the fence of the prison doing some target practice on biters. Gabe and his men stay hidden in the bushes as they watch the group start dragging one of the biters back toward the gates and taking it inside. While unseen, Axel was present for target practice.

During the first assault on the prison, after the biters around the fence are killed or lured away, the Governor orders the militia to shoot to kill at the prison's residents. The survivors dive for cover from the barrage of bullets, some of the weaker ones covering their heads and staying on the ground, others crawling madly for safety, and some of the older ones trying to help the younger ones. Many of the survivors appear to be unnarmed which bothers Lilly Caul. She looks away from her scope for a moment and sees Axel make a mad dash for a doorway. A sudden burst riddles his shoulder with bullet holes, tearing chunks from his hairy arms and belly. He falls to the ground in a bloody spray, and Lilly lets out a tense breath. In reality, Lilly was mistaken, as Axel was only shot non-fatally in the arm and survives the initial assault.

Trivia[]

  • Axel is one of the three characters in the whole The Walking Dead franchise to have a catchphrase, other being Norma Sutters and Sarah Rabinowitz.
    • Robert Kirkman stated, "Axel saying "You follow me" is a personality tick, something he's done for as long as he's been in the book.[1]
  • Axel is one of the few characters Robert Kirkman misses and regrets killing.
    • Creator Robert Kirkman wrote:
"I wanted Axel's death to be pretty abrupt and final... like things would be in real life. No speech, no moment of heroism or sacrifice ...just a sound and a fallen body. Probably didn't live up to what you wanted but most deaths wouldn't in real life. Not many people really get to go out in a grand style."[2]
