The following are a list of Background Survivors from Image Comics' The Walking Dead. Sometimes classified as "redshirts", these characters appear in the background during issues while the main survivors are engaged in the story. These survivors usually have no part in the main storyline and perform normal, everyday, non-crucial actions.

Background survivors are usually left unnamed, and have no or few speaking roles. They are often killed to "dramatize the dangerous situation experienced by the main characters", such as many of the deaths during "All Out War - Part One and Two" or "The Whisperer War". With the introduction of several large groups and communities, background survivors are used to show a large population at these settlements, including Woodbury, Alexandria Safe-Zone, Hilltop Colony, and the Saviors.

Here's Negan

Here's Negan shows many background characters living normal lives prior to the apocalypse. Most in not all of the characters seen come from the state of Virginia.

Greene Family Farm

Greene Family Farm is a house, barn and farmland previously owned by Hershel Greene and first encountered in Issues 10 to 14. After a long intermission, it is seen again in Issues 53 and 54.

Woodbury, Georgia

Woodbury, Georgia is a small walled off town of survivors first encountered in Issue 27. According to the novel series, a total of 50 survivors live in the town, however this number is contradicted because many named characters are introduced which bump this number up notably. Taking into consideration all the named characters, as of Rick, Glenn, and Michonne discovering the town, there are over 72 survivors. Immediately after the prison assault the population can be assumed to be approximately 31 (comprising of 8 women, 11 men, and 12 children). However the population of men is up for debate.

The survivors who live in the town can often be seen walking through the streets or standing guard on the wall. Most survivors are seen in the stalls watching the town's gladiator arena fights and cheering the cage fighters on or reacting in horror to Michonne murdering Eugene. Many more survivors are later seen attacking the prison where almost all of them are killed.

Notes

• Many background survivors were created without much consistency or notable differences as they were never planned to become characters. The novel expanded on many of these survivors giving them names and roles within the story. However this has lead to some characters looking notably different in scenes due to them originally being separate before the books combined them. Some characters also canonically die, yet someone with the same appearance may be seen again.

Alexandria Safe-Zone

The Alexandria Safe-Zone is a walled off housing community located near Washington D.C. and first encountered in Issue 69. It is home to around 50 people, a mix of named characters and background survivors. Most of the background survivors can be seen socializing with neighbors, serving on the construction crew, or carrying out everyday tasks (reading, on guard duty, walking the dog). Often times, many extras are present for various events, such as Douglas' party.

With the three year timeskip between "Volume 21: All Out War - Part Two" and "Volume 22: A New Beginning" many background survivors aren't seen again and many new faces show up. It can be assumed that many survivors between the communities have moved to different settlements or died between that time.

The Scavengers

The Scavengers are a small group of hostile survivors lead by Derek in Washington D.C. They attack the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Issue 78. The group consists of seven members and possibly more who are never seen.

Notes

• Almost all of these survivors were unnamed, however The Walking Dead: All Out War Miniatures Game gave four of them identities. The only two who remain unnamed are seen bellow.

Hilltop Colony

The Hilltop Colony is a walled off farming community built around the Barrington House in Virginia and first encountered in Issue 94. Upon it's first introduction, Jesus mentions that the community is home to approximately 200 survivors. After the three year time skip between "Volume 21: All Out War - Part Two" and "Volume 22: A New Beginning" it can be assumed that the population has remained roughly the same but this is never addressed. Many of the survivors can be seen meandering in the background, standing guard on the wall, eating dinner with the rest of the community or simply chatting with fellow residents.

The Saviors

The Saviors are a formerly antagonistic group living in a factory and several outposts around Virginia and first encountered in Issue 97. The group can be assumed to consist of approximately 200 survivors however this number is only an assumption from the survivors. Since the number of people that make up the Saviors is so large, the majority of the group are made up of background survivors. Since their first large appearance in Issue 100, many Saviors have been recurring, appearing at the Sanctuary and at Alexandria with Negan.

The Kingdom

The Kingdom is a large walled off community living in and around a high-school in Washington D.C. first encountered in Issue 108. It's the second biggest settlement after the Hilltop Colony and holds the highest amount of non-Savior deaths in All Out War. The Kingdom isn't often seen and it's residents mostly appear fighting as redshirts during wars.

The Whisperers

The Whisperers are a large group of primitivists who wear the skin of zombies to walk among the dead, first encountered in Issue 132. They often blend into the dead which makes it difficult to distinguish a living Whisperer from a roamer. They live many camps and never stick to one place for too long. Most of the background survivors can be seen attacking the main characters or carrying out chores around their camp. After Issue 173, almost all the survivors can be assumed deceased and the group disbanded.

Oceanside

Oceanside is a small fishing community located on the east coast of Virginia and first encountered in Issue 139. Oceanside is never directly seen and not much is known about it including it's population. Very few survivors from the community are known or seen, the only two being Pete and formerly Siddiq.

The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth is an enormous unwalled network of communities located in Ohio and first encountered in Issue 175. The community is home to approximately 50,000 survivors making it the largest settlement in the Comic Universe. Many of these background survivors can be seen in the background walking down the street, dining at restaurants or cafés, or on duty apart of the community's large police and military force.

Greenville

Greenville is a small unwalled lakeside community in Ohio and part of the Commonwealth's network, first encountered in Issue 183.

Issue 193

In Issue 193, 23 years after the death of Rick Grimes, the eastern side of the United States has been reunited and a large portion of it is now part of the Commonwealth. Carl Grimes and Lydia travel to many different locations in this issue where many background survivors are seen living normal lives. They're listed here as it's unknown which exact community or group most of them belong under.
