Some of you know what this sword means to me. It was, among other military antiquities, being evacuated from the Museum of the American Revolution. Or stolen. We don't know. But the truck was caught in some of the bombings by our former illustrious Air Force, and I found it at the Battle of Fitler Square, and it saved my life. It was Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer's sword. Mercer had different lives. He fought on different sides in different wars, landed on the right side in the fight against the British, and he died in that fight. I believe you can draw a stright line between his sacrifice and Donald Okafor's sacrifice.
―Major General Beale at Okafor's funeral.[src]

Beale's Sword is a saber belonging to Major General Johnathan Beale of the CRM. It originally belonged to General Hugh Mercer during the American Revolution.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

During the American Revolution, the sword belonged to General Hugh Mercer who died fighting against the British. It eventually ended up in the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Post-Apocalypse[]

During the start of the Trials, the sword, along with other military antiquities, were evacuated or possibly stolen from the Museum of the American Revolution. However, the truck carrying it got caught in some of the bombings of Operation Cobalt and the sword was lost.

During the Battle of Fitler Square, Major General Beale found the sword and it saved his life in some manner. Beale later told this story at Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor's funeral, noting that some of the CRM were aware of what the sword meant to him.

While giving Rick Grimes the Echelon Briefing, Beale lays his sword on the desk between them alongside Rick's weapons. At the end of the briefing, Beale instructs Rick to swear on the sword, causing Rick to remember Okafor telling him to "swear on the sword. Don't let it take". Instead, the two men get into a fight with Beale arming himself with the sword, but Rick is able to block the blows with his prosthetic hand. Disarming Beale, Rick stabs Beale in the heart with his own sword, killing him.

Rick later gives the sword to Michonne as they prepare to blow up the CRM's supply of Chlorine Gas and Michonne wears it in place of her usual katana. Michonne fights Pearl Thorne with it, eventually fatally stabbing the other woman. After the fight with Thorne, Michonne drops Beale's sword on the ground and abandons it there.

Killed Victims[]

The following is a list of victims killed with the sword:

Trivia[]

  • In "Years", Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor tells Rick Grimes that "when you get to that point swear on the sword. Don't let it take. You'll know. Trust me. You'll know." This may be an allusion to Beale's sword.
