Bloaters[1] are a rare special variation of zombies that are only appear in Overkill's The Walking Dead. They are massive bloated zombies which explode into blood and guts after being killed or by getting within close range of them.
Overview[]
Bloaters work very similar to normal zombies, but vary in many ways as well. For instance, bloaters have the ability to explode if they come in close contact with someone or when they are killed, resulting in their blood and guts exploding in multiple directions, thus blinding the vision of a survivor. Their explosions are even powerful enough to trigger exploding barrels. Also, unlike regular zombies, bloaters do not die from a single headshot and can take multiple bullets or bashes to the head before finally dying. The bloaters seen in Overkill's The Walking Dead also don't seem to have a hunger for flesh and their only tendency is to explode near survivors to blind them so other zombies can attack.
Currently nothing is known about the bloater's origin and how they came to be, it's also unknown how they have the ability to explode at will or even why they explode at all. It's also unknown if bloaters are even capable of biting as they have not been shown to bite people.

Trivia[]
- Bloaters are the second known variation of zombies to exist within The Walking Dead franchise.
- Although only appearing in Overkill's The Walking Dead, a similar zombie appears in the episode "Cherokee Rose" of the TV Series it's second season.
- They share the same name as a special variant of cordyceps zombie seen in The Last of Us.
- They are very similar to "boomers" from the Left 4 Dead series.
- Killing bloaters when they're close to each other will make them explode all at once.
