The California National Guard is part of the National Guard of the United States, a dual federal-state military reserve force. The CA National Guard has three components: the CA Army National Guard, CA Air National Guard, and CA State Guard. With a total strength of over 24,000 troops, it was the largest National Guard in the United States. As the outbreak of the Wildfire Virus began, the National Guard was activated by the Governor to contain the spread of the virus and isolate civilians from the infected.
At the end of the first season of Fear the Walking Dead, it is in full retreat from Los Angeles and its safe zones. The fate of the organization is unknown, but they were last reported to have an operational presence in Edwards Air Force Base in the southern part of the state. It is possible that they continue to operate, or they could have been overrun. They served as the primary antagonistic group of Season 1.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
The California National Guard was formed in 1949 as the dual federal-state reserve military force of the state of California. Headquartered at 9800 Goethe Road in Sacramento, the state capital, it has three main branches: The California Army National Guard, the state's US Army Reserve force, the California State Guard, the state's de facto organized militia under the sole authority of the Governor which would augment the Army National Guard in the event of activation, and the the California Air National Guard, the state's Air Force reserves. Falling under the National Guard Bureau in Washington, it was one of the largest state National Guards in the US. When the outbreak of the Wildfire virus made its way to the United States, California was among the first states to be affected. The virus made its way to the West Coast, and from there began to spread rapidly to the rest of the United States, eventually engulfing all of North America.

Season 1[]
"The Dog"[]
The Governor of California requests assistance of the Army National Guard to deal with the widespread riots and growing number of infected all over the state. Elements of the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat team under the command of 1st Lieutenant Moyers take over the neighborhood in LA where the Clarks live in, eliminating all infected, raising a fence and turning it into Safe Zone India. As the first episode comes an end, the National Guard is seen sweeping the neighborhood and sealing it off from the outside world. As Madison Clark arrives at the home of one neighbor, she is horrified to learn his wife has been infected with the virus. Moments later, National Guardsmen arrive and kill the infected, with the neighbor being covered in his zombified wife's blood and restrain Madison.
"Not Fade Away"[]
Over the course of several days, the Army National Guard designates twelve safe-zones in the city of Los Angeles, maintaining strict curfews and isolating anyone who had previous contact with the infected and who they deem to be a possible threat. Lieutenant Moyers claims that they have cleared a six-mile radius around the safe zone and are preparing for the push to retake Los Angeles. At the same time, after sneaking out, Madison Clark discovers bodies on the streets of Los Angeles of those who are uninfected and have been shot with the implication that the National Guardsmen may have done it. After Travis gives the Guardsmen a tip on a possible survivor in the Dead Zone spotted by his son Chris, he sees muzzle flashes in the building as the Guardsmen apparently kill the survivor or survivors rather than help them.
"Cobalt"[]
The Army National Guard has set up at least 13 refugee camps and also have limited electricity as well as curfews being issued by the military. At the same time, the occupation of Los Angeles by the Army National Guard is almost to the brink of collapse. The Army National Guard lost many of its members, including those who storm the West View Library and are overwhelmed by the walkers inside there. Some, including Sergeant Castro, would desert and try to find their families. In addition, Corporal Adams, who is kidnapped and tortured by Daniel, reveals that "Cobalt" is a command code to kill all of the civilians and the guardsmen to evacuate the city by morning, once it is realized that the situation cannot be properly contained.
"The Good Man"[]
As the National Guard prepares to evacuate their remaining members out of the city, a massive herd of infected (deliberately led by Daniel) attacks and overwhelms a major military compound near Safe Zone India, resulting in many military and civilian casualties. With their last major outpost overrun, the National Guard presumably initiates Operation Cobalt and abandons Los Angeles, retreating to other military installations further west, such as Edwards Air Force Base.
