The Channel Tunnel, also known informally as the Chunnel, is a location that appears in AMC's The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. It's a 50 kilometer long railway tunnel stretching underneath the English Channel between France and the United Kingdom. It is the only fixed link between the island of Great Britain and the European mainland.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
In 1802, Albert Mathieu-Favier, a French mining engineer, proposed a tunnel under the English Channel, with illumination from oil lamps, horse-drawn coaches, and an artificial island positioned mid-Channel for changing horses. His design envisaged a bored two-level tunnel with the top tunnel used for transport and the bottom one for groundwater flows.
The Chunnel was eventually completed in 1994.
Post-Apocalypse[]
With the British Military having secured England, they also secured the Chunnel, setting up a checkpoint near the France end to stop any French from coming through, but also to allow any of their own returning citizens to travel through on foot.
When Angus and Fiona traveled to Paris in order to get married, they used the Chunnel which was a 9 hour trip on foot.
At some point, the British soldiers at the checkpoint fell victim to the psychoactive effects of the bat guano covering the Chunnel floor, going insane and killing each other.
The Chunnel later became partially overrun on the French side by lurkers covered in a bioluminescent fungus as well as some walkers.
Season 2[]
"Au Revoir Les Enfants"[]
With the departure of Ash's Plane, Daryl's Group decides to use the Chunnel to travel to England in search of another way back to America, guided by Angus and Fiona. The group encounters the abandoned British checkpoint and begins to fall victim to the effects of the bat guano, causing everyone to start hallucinating.
Encountering bioluminescent lurkers, the group inadvertently causes them to become active and form a herd along with several walkers drawn by the noise. Fighting off the herd, Stéphane runs off after a hallucination of his zombified brother, Carol finally makes peace with the death of her daughter, and Daryl is forced to kill Angus and Fiona in self-defense after hallucinating Isabelle. Donning gas masks from the checkpoint, Daryl and Carol continue down the Chunnel towards England.
