Pre-Apocalypse
Chicago was a major city in the state of Illinois. Jason Riley and his family lived here.
Post-Apocalypse
In the early weeks of the outbreak, Chicago is overrun by the undead. For an unknown reason, most likely as part of Operation Cobalt, the USS Pennsylvania is ordered to nuke the city. However, Jason Riley, Pierce and McGuire mutiny and refuse to comply with the order, sparing Chicago from nuclear destruction.
After beaching the Pennsylvania, Riley calls his family who live in Chicago and discover his wife and son to still be alive. However, while he is on the phone with them, walkers break into their home and devour Riley's wife and child.
Tomichi was living in Chicago prior to the outbreak; however, he managed to escape after the apocalypse had begun.
It is unknown if Chicago was targeted as part of Operation Cobalt, although it could have happened due to the sheer number of undead in its metropolitan areas.
