It wasn't to supposed to be like this. We were supposed to be together forever. Fire at the same time--It was going to work. Together forever.
―Chris about his failed suicide pact with Julie.[src]

Chris is a survivor of the outbreak in Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is also the tritagonist of the Tyreese Special. He is the boyfriend of Julie and is staying with her and her father, Tyreese, due to personal problems when the apocalypse begins. Chris also acts as the group's babysitter, and eventually, plans a suicide pact with Julie.

Overview[]

Chris is an arrogant, rude, and self-entitled teenager who has little care for others except himself and his girlfriend, Julie. He has little respect for authority, most prominently shown with his relationship with Julie's father, Tyreese, who Chris sees as a nuisance getting in the way of his relationship with Julie. He can be rather foolish, often having sex with Julie which often leads them getting into trouble. Despite this, he seems to think highly of himself. He is shown to be annoyed when he is put on babysitting duty, thinking he should be out fighting walkers with the others. Although he talks a big game, his ego is very fragile, as shown when he curses out Carl, a nine-year old, for simply pointing out that he isn't an adult yet.

Not wanting to live in the apocalypse any longer, Chris and Julie plan a suicide pact, believing that doing so will allow them to be together forever. He ends up shooting too early, killing only Julie and forcing him to put her down after she reanimates, leading to his death at the hands of Tyreese.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Not much is known about Chris's life prior to or as the outbreak began, except that he was born in 1987 and going out with Julie, and he got into a fight with his parents, causing him to stay with Julie and Tyreese right before the apocalypse started.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Free Comic Book Day Special[]

After Tyreese arrives back home, Chris almost hit in the face with a fire-poker. Tyreese manages to grab it and berates him for this. Chris then asks him for the gun, saying he can shoot, but Tyreese tells him that he ran out of bullets and tossed it away. Chris then angrily snaps back, asking if Tyreese actually got anything. Tyreese tells him that he got a hammer that he is about to put through his skull, then asking Chris to give him some space.

Miles Behind Us[]

Chris and his girlfriend Julie traveled along with Julie's father Tyreese in the onset of the zombie apocalypse. Upon joining Rick Grimes's group, Julie and Chris were forced to babysit, something they hated. Nevertheless, they still had time to comfort each other.

Safety Behind Bars[]

After finding the prison, Chris seemed to want to prove his worth to Rick and the group or at least not be treated as a child. He often grumbles and curses in annoyance when he and Julie were asked to stay with the children, while the others invaded the jail. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Chris was pressuring Julie into a suicide pact, believing they could truly be together forever. On the night they executed their plan, Chris fired too early and only Julie was killed. Tyreese noticed the first gunshot and picked up her lifeless body. When Julie reanimated, he shot her again. However, Tyreese strangled Chris to death over this. After Chris reanimated, he brutally attacked the zombie, mutilating it. He burned both of their corpses and later told Rick what had transpired.

Trivia[]

  • Although Chris and Julie didn't enact their suicide pact until after they arrived at the prison, it was hinted about while the survivors stayed on Hershel Greene's farm. After a target practice session, Tyreese decided to allow the two teenagers to keep their guns; Chris later remarked, "Finally... this is going to be so much easier."
  • Tyreese's group is the only group where all members reanimated as zombies at some point. Julie reanimates after Chris kills her, but, he shoots her again, causing Tyreese to murder him twice, both as a human and as a zombie. When the Governor kills Tyreese, his decapitated head reanimates. Tyreese's zombie is finally put to rest by Michonne.
  • Robert Kirkman answered the question whether naming characters the same name, Billy, Chris, Jim, Eugene, Eric, and Bruce, was an oversight: "It's not oversight at all. It's completely unrealistic for a group of people to meet at random and never encounter the same names."[1]
  • According to Robert Kirkman in Letter Hacks #17, Julie was supposed to fatally shoot Chris, followed by Chris reanimating and being killed by Tyreese.
