The Colt Python is a .357 Magnum revolver made by Colt's Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. It is sometimes referred to as a "Combat Magnum".
Overview[]
In The Walking Dead TV series, it is the signature weapon of Rick Grimes, carried by him throughout the series and chosen for its high stopping power and accuracy. Notably, the manner in which he aims the magnum, up and at a down angle, has become something of a joke online, dubbed "Rick's way" of holding the gun. Though Rick is shown with a revolver on occasion in the comics, it is not his "signature weapon" and he is rarely shown using it.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
It was first introduced in 1955, the same year as Smith & Wesson's M29 .44 Magnum. The first generation was discontinued in 2005, with the second generation starting production in 2020. Colt Python targeted the premium revolver market segment. Some firearm collectors and writers have described the Python as the finest production revolver ever made. The Colt Python was once a standard-issue firearm for Georgia State Patrol and Florida Highway Patrol officers, but it, along with most revolvers is very rarely used as a primary sidearm by law enforcement officials due to their low round capacity and reload time taking longer than most semi-automatic pistols. Revolvers are however often used as backup pistols, with the Colt Python being no exception.
During his career as a law enforcement officer, Rick Grimes favored the Colt Python.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Original TV Series[]
After awakening from his coma, Rick Grimes retrieves his Colt Python from the King County Sheriff's Department where it had been left. Rick subsequently uses the gun to put down his former colleague Leon Basset outside. However, he quickly runs out of ammunition in Atlanta and has to use other weapons before Shane Walsh provides him with more ammunition.
During Shane and Otis' mission to retrieve medical supplies for Carl, Rick lends his gun to Otis. When Shane wounds Otis and leaves him for dead, he takes the Colt Python back. Daryl Dixon later lists Shane returning with the gun as one of the reasons that he realized that Shane had killed Otis.
Rick subsequently continues to use the Colt Python as his weapon of choice, putting down the reanimated Sophia Peletier during the barn massacre, killing Dave and Tony and lending it to Daryl to mercy kill the dying Dale Horvath.
During a fight in the prison, Oscar retrieves the gun after it's knocked from Rick's hand, but he uses it to kill Andrew rather than its owner. Oscar then returned the gun to Rick as a gesture of peace.
After finding out that Andrea has been bitten, Rick sorrowfully lends her his Colt Python so that Andrea can kill herself before she can turn.
Rick chooses to hide several guns in a bag in a forest before entering Terminus, as a precautionary measure, and he temporarily uses other firearms instead of his revolver, even after retrieving it.
During the group's first encounter with Negan, Rick has his Python confiscated, forcing him to use other weapons for a period of time. Daryl later finds it in the hands of Joseph while he is escaping from the Sanctuary. After killing Joseph, Daryl retrieves the gun and returns it to its owner upon his reunion with Rick.
When Rick is apparently killed blowing up a bridge in order to stop a herd, he uses the gun to detonate the dynamite. Rick apparently drops it before he is rescued on a riverbank by Anne and the CRM. Michonne's search for Rick's body only turns up his gun which she retrieves and keeps. Michonne carries the gun as she searches for Rick, but after again finding no sign of him at the riverbank seven months later, Michonne packs the Colt Python away in a box.
Michonne later gives the gun to Rick's daughter Judith who wields the Colt Python alongside a smaller version of Michonne's katana. Judith uses the Colt Python to rescue Magna's Group from a herd and shoots Beta when he infiltrates Alexandria in search of Mary. However, Beta survives as he is wearing body armor.
When Daryl kills Austin, he finds a black-colored Colt Python on the Reaper's body and takes it, giving the gun to Maggie Rhee. As Leah, Boone and Washington retreat, Maggie uses the gun to shoot the three in the back in an act of revenge, killing Boone and Washington and wounding Leah who Daryl allows to escape. Maggie then attempts to use the gun to kill Brandon Carver, but she discovers that it has run out of ammunition. Instead, Maggie discards the Colt Python, grabs one of Elijah's kamas and uses that to kill Brandon.
As the Coalition prepares to split ways with the Commonwealth, Daryl retrieves Rick's Colt Python and offers it back to Judith. However, Judith rejects the gun, telling Daryl that if she takes it back, things will go back to how it was which it shouldn't be. Daryl later tells Judith that he'll hold onto the gun for awhile until Judith wants it or not, but either way, she's stuck with him.
When zombies attack a crowd of Commonwealth residents, Daryl uses the Colt Python to put down a walker approaching Judith. Judith has Daryl give her back her father's gun as the two go to help the civilians. Judith uses the gun to put down a walker eating a Commonwealth resident and the walker attacking Sebastian Milton, albeit too late to save Sebastian's life.
After Alexandria is liberated from Commonwealth control, Judith recovers the Colt Python and her sword from a box of the Coalition's weapons and carries it with her during the mission to overthrow Pamela Milton. After Judith is shot by Pamela, Daryl takes the gun from her and uses it to shoot a fire extinguisher that he has Ezekiel throw in order to create a smokescreen distraction.
Following his capture by the Civic Republic Military and the loss of his gun, Rick switches to a CRM Kill Stick during his time as a consignee, carrying it during his third escape attempt.
Fear the Walking Dead[]
Both Marcus and Hill of The Pioneers use Colt Pythons, although Hill later switches to John Dorie's stolen Colt Single Action Army.
The Ones Who Live[]
Having lost his Colt Python in the bridge explosion, Rick instead primarily utilizes a CRM Kill Stick and the blade in his prosthetic hand.
Judith is wearing her father's Colt Python when Rick finally returns home.
Telltale Series[]
William Carver uses a Colt Python, killing Walter and, determinately, Alvin at Moonstar Lodge. After Carver's death at Kenny's hands, Rebecca takes the gun. It's presumably lost with her death as the gun is never seen again.
Destinies[]
Rick Grimes uses a Colt Python. If Shane Walsh kills Rick and takes his place as the leader of the group, the gun is abandoned with Rick. If Rick kills Shane, he shoots his former best friend with it after Shane reanimates when Rick kills him.
