Overview

Although his personality is not well-known, David is seemingly a caring man who looks out for his students. Though he can be somewhat careless as he ends up being caught in a bear trap in the middle of the woods. Two of his students, Ben and Travis, refuse to leave him behind and try anything in an attempt to save him. If Lee is unable to save David, Travis will be outraged and attempt to steal Mark's gun, which ends up getting him shot. David has a very strong desire to live, screaming and begging to be saved.

Pre-Apocalypse

Stone Mountain, Georgia, United States

Almost nothing is known about David's life prior to or as the outbreak began. All that is known is that he was a band director at Stone Mountain High School. It is also revealed that he taught both Ben and Travis.

Post-Apocalypse

Season One

Shortly before the events in "Starved For Help", his camp was raided by bandits, who killed several teachers and students, and raided their supplies, causing David, Ben, and Travis to flee.

"Starved For Help"

David is first seen in the woods, screaming because he was caught in a bear trap (most likely set by the St. John's brothers) while being accompanied by Ben and Travis. Lee Everett, Mark, and Kenny arrive and begin assisting with his leg. At this time, Travis warns Ben not to trust them, as they might've been the people who raided their camp. Mark discovers that the bear trap had been tampered with and cannot be undone. Walkers arrive to attack them all, but Kenny and Mark are able to stall them while Lee goes about getting David out of the bear trap.

Free David: Lee saves David by cutting off his leg, freeing him from the trap, and then is carried by Mark. Travis, unfortunately, is distracted and devoured by walkers. David is then taken back to the motor inn, where he and Ben are allowed inside. Mark sets him down on a pickup truck so Katjaa may work on his bleeding leg, but he ultimately dies of blood loss. He then reanimates as a walker unbeknownst to Lee and Katjaa and attacks the latter before Lee saves her. He then attacks Lee, who manages to hold David at bay until either Larry, Carley, or Mark comes to assist him and kill David. Ben will then explain how David reanimated.

Leave David: If David is not cut out in time, Travis will attempt to take Mark's hunting rifle, but he is accidentally shot. They will take Travis back to the motor inn, leaving David behind to be devoured by walkers, something Lee apologizes for.

Death

Killed By

The St. John family is believed to have set up bear traps in the areas around their farm to entrap wayward animals and survivors, removing the traps' release latches so that they could ensure that their victims could not escape. David accidentally steps into one of these traps while traveling with former students Ben and Travis.

Free David

After encountering them in the woods, Ben and Travis begged Lee, Mark, and Kenny to help free their teacher as a large group of walkers approach them. Finding no other option to remove him from the bear trap, Lee uses his axe to chop off David's leg, making him painfully pass out. Mark carries him back to their motel to try to get Katjaa to treat his wound, but David loses too much blood and dies despite her efforts.

  • Carley (Zombified, If Carley is saved in "A New Day")
  • Larry (Zombified, If Doug is saved and axe given to Larry)
  • Mark (Zombified, If Doug is saved and axe given to Mark)

David reanimates as a walker shortly after Katjaa pronounces him dead, attacking her and Lee. Lee is able to fend off David’s attack until one of the other survivors comes to his rescue. If Carley was saved in "A New Day", she shoots David in the head at Lee’s urging. Alternatively, if Carley died in "A New Day", either Larry or Mark will use Lee’s axe to chop into David’s head, depending on which one was given Lee’s axe.

Leave David

After encountering them in the woods, Ben and Travis begged Lee, Mark, and Kenny to help free their teacher as a large group of walkers approach them. Lee takes too long to save David, forcing Mark and Kenny to stop him and decide to leave David behind before the walkers overwhelm them. Travis tries to take Mark's weapon to defend David himself, but he accidentally gets shot in the process, leaving no one else who could protect David. Taking Ben and the wounded Travis, the group leaves David behind to be devoured by the walkers. It is unknown if there was enough of him left to reanimate after he was devoured.

Trivia

  • If Carley shot David after he turned, his head incorrectly appears as if he were decapitated.
  • Early in development, if the player left David behind in the bear trap, then he would be the one to be found by Lee Everett at the St. John's Dairy Farm, with both legs having been chopped off by Danny St. John, instead of Mark. Mark would go on to be left behind in the bandit attack of the next episode, or get fatally shot during the original bandit attack near the electric fence. This was scrapped for an unknown reason.
    • This is backed up by the unused audio lines from "Starved For Help", where David can be heard speaking some of Mark's lines.
  • It is possible for the player to hack into his leg several times, but still leave him to die in the bear trap.
  • According to unused audio clips, David witnessed a lot of traumatic events. One of these was his students being raped to death by bandits while he was forced to watch.
  • David is the first of two characters to be seen in the Telltale Series with his leg caught in a bear trap, with the second being the character who likely set up David's trap, Danny St. John.
  • For the 2012 Video Game Awards, there was a humorous rendition of David Parker being caught in a bear trap, involving Samuel L. Jackson taking the place of Lee Everett. The video bears several intentional contradictions with the actual scene:
    • In the video, David states that there's a release button on the trap where there is none in the Telltale Series.
    • The walkers are much further away and walk more slowly than they do in-game.
    • Samuel is much more eager to chop off David's leg than Lee is in the actual game.
  • In the Japanese version of Season One, the scene where Lee cuts off David's leg is censored. Originally, you could see inside his leg when it is being cut off, but the gore was completely retextured. Despite the censorship, the game was still given a CERO Z rating, which is the highest rating in that system.[1]
  • David Parker and the train engineer from "Long Road Ahead" share the same model.
  • In an Easter egg, a photo of David stuck in the bear trap can be seen on the wall of the García Family Home during a flashback in "Ties That Bind - Part 2", despite the scene taking place pre-apocalypse, prior to David getting his foot caught. This may have been a gag about David García sharing his name with David Parker.
