Derrick is a survivor of the outbreak in Skybound Comet's Clementine.

Not much is known about Derrick's life prior to or as the outbreak started, except that he was a writer.
Post-Apocalypse
Book Two
"Chapter Eight"
Derrick is first met when Clementine and Fen come to ask about Saa, an old friend of Anne Morro. After Saa comes out of her ship, Derrick offers Clem and Fen some provisions since they're just kids. Saa orders Derrick to pack them a bag of supplies while she talks with Clementine and Fen.
After Fen storms out, Derrick comes back with a bag of food which he gives to Clementine. Clementine asks about their crew and Derrick replies that they drowned, but Saa doesn't believe it. Clementine offers for her and her group to accompany them on their trip to Greenland and while Saa is a little skeptical, Derrick says they're just as desperate as Clementine is.
Ultimately, Saa agrees and the next day, as they are getting ready to leave, Clementine, along with Olivia, Ricca, and their cat Dr. Barnwell make it last minute. While Saa chastises them for being late, Derrick tells her to keep her focus.

Later that night, Derrick is seen sleeping with Dr. Barnwell in his arms.
