A herd that size could rip the house down.

The Destruction of Hershel's Farm is a major event that occurred during the season finale of the second season of AMC's The Walking Dead.

History[]

While out searching for Randall, whom Shane claimed had escaped captivity, Rick and Shane enter a clearing and have a drawn out confrontation over Shane's true intentions. After a tense standoff, Rick stabs Shane in the heart, which kills him after a few seconds. Minutes later, Rick is approached by a shocked Carl. Shane reanimates, not noticed by Rick, and a quick acting Carl shoots the now zombified Shane to save his father.

Carl's gunshot gains the attention of a massive herd of walkers, which had migrated into the woods near the farm over the course of several months after being lured out of the city by a helicopter. While walking back to the house, Rick and Carl spot the herd behind them and run for safety inside the barn. The rest of the group at the house sees the herd, too, and begin coming up with a plan to fight it off. Andrea suggests using the cars to go down and kill as many as possible, then drive off and lead the rest away. Lori realizes Carl is no longer in the house, so she and Carol start looking for him. Rick and Carl douse the barn in gasoline before Rick lets in a part of herd and Carl sets the barn, as well as the walkers, ablaze. The group begins their plan, driving down toward the herd and shooting as many walkers as they can. Daryl uses his motorcycle, Jimmy uses Dale's RV, Maggie uses the Hyundai while Glenn shoots, and T-Dog uses Otis' blue pickup truck while Andrea shoots.

At first, they are able to hold the walkers off, but they start pushing through the fences. Rick and Carl are stuck on the upper level of the barn while it burns with no way down. Daryl sends Jimmy to drive to the barn to rescue either Rick or Shane, who he believes set the fire. Jimmy does and is able to get Rick and Carl off the barn successfully. He goes to help them off of the RV, but walkers break in the door and swarm Jimmy, quickly devouring him. Rick and Carl witness this before running back into the woods to dodge the herd. The others continue shooting but realize they're going to run out of ammo. Hershel starts shooting from the house with a shotgun, while Lori and Carol are still looking for Carl. Carol tells her that they have to leave the house or they'll be overrun, and eventually Lori is convinced. She, Carol, Beth, and Patricia get ready to run and are unsuccessful in getting Hershel to come with them. While escaping, a walker lunges at Patricia and bites her neck. More surround her and tear her apart all while Beth holds her hand. Lori is forced to pull Beth away from her and let the walkers pull Patricia to the ground.

Lori and Beth get rescued by Andrea and T-Dog, then Andrea runs to rescue Carol, who had gotten separated and is now cornered by two walkers. Andrea saves her, but is knocked down by a walker behind her. T-Dog, Lori, and Beth think that it got her, so they drive off in a panic while Carol runs off. Andrea frees herself and realizes she's now alone. Glenn and Maggie leave the farm shortly behind them as well. Hershel runs out of ammo in his shotgun and is saved by Rick. Together, he, Carl, and Hershel escape the farm. As Rick drives away, he fails to see Andrea attempt to flag him down. She's then forced to flee on foot by herself, but not before grabbing the bag of guns dropped by Lori only moments earlier. Daryl is about to leave the farm when he hears Carol screaming, and drives back to rescue her. She gets on his bike and they escape just in time. Hershel watches out the window in sadness as his farm is overrun and his barn burns to the ground and collapses in on itself.

The following morning, the group is able to reunite on the highway, with the exception of Andrea. When asked about Shane's whereabouts, Rick uses the herd as a means to cover up the true manner of his death. Daryl and Glenn want to go back to find Andrea, but it's deemed a lost cause, so the group moves on. Andrea is left in the woods to fend for herself for an entire day. By dusk, she's tired and almost taken out by one last walker, but at the last second is rescued by a hooded survivor.
