Nothing much is known about the location's history before or as the outbreak started, except that it connects with a large highway that was overrun when the outbreak hit.

"Beside the Dying Fire"[]

Rick Grimes and his group find this location after barely escaping from Hershel Greene's farm after a large walker herd attacked. Rick decides to set camp on the road for the night as he does not want to risk anyone getting injured on a scavenging run. Most of the group look at him in doubt and confusion. He insists that if they stick together they will stand a better chance and that going off alone without a car could leave anyone stranded. Glenn Rhee says that they are already stranded and there are walkers everywhere. Rick ignores Glenn's comment and the group's angry looks and says that there is a better place to live and that he knows they can find it. Daryl Dixon then brings up Randall's death back at the farm, saying that he turned without being bitten; after some time, Rick solemnly says, "We're all infected." He goes on to explain that back at the CDC, where the group briefly stopped some weeks before, Dr. Edwin Jenner told him that whatever the virus is, they all carry it. The group looks at Rick in anger; however, he turns his back and walks away.

His wife Lori confronts him about this. Rick reveals to her that he was the one to kill his friend Shane Walsh back at the farm and that their son Carl put him down once he reanimated. A horrified Lori backs away in disgust. Rick tries to calm her down but she bats his arm away and glares at him in anger.

The group is later seen gathered around a small campfire. Rick explains that he killed Shane for the group's safety and that if anyone wants to leave they are free to go. Nobody tries to leave the group and Rick states, "If you're staying, fine, but get one thing straight: This isn't a democracy anymore."
