Eugene Cooney is a comic-adapted character first encountered in The Walking Dead: The Road to Woodbury. He is described as "a toothless, tank-shaped man with a shaved head" and "crusty, scabrous and subliterate". "He wears secondhand football pads over his iron-girder shoulders, and carries a bloodstained bat wound with reams of tape." He is a resident and an arena fighter living in Woodbury.
Nothing is known about Eugene's life prior to or as the outbreak began. He may have lived in or near Woodbury before the outbreak.
At some point after the outbreak began, Eugene became a guard in Woodbury.
Eugene is first seen with Travis helping gather biters for the big arena fight. Travis backs his truck up against the fence and Eugene gets out with a grunt to open the vertical door and lower the ramp. Soon after, Dr. Stevens arrives with one of the National Guardsmen, Stinson, who is placed in the back of the truck as bait and devoured.
At some point Eugene volunteers to fight in the arena for entertainment as a staged performance.
