Pre-Apocalypse[]
The California Highway Patrol is the law enforcement agency responsibility for patrolling the highways of California. It has the ability to be the State Police where needed. Members of the Highway Patrol were among the first responders during the early days of the outbreak.
Post-Apocalypse[]
In Season 1 of Fear the Walking Dead, the highway patrol was involved in an incident on the highway relating to a crash that was witnessed by Madison and Travis. The driver died on the scene and reanimated. He then proceeded to attack the paramedics who were attending him. The highway patrol the proceeded to try and subdue him with their batons. When this failed, they started using firearms. They shot him several times in the chest, but to no effect. The victim kept getting back up. Finally, one officer went for a head shot, putting the reanimated man down.
The whole incident was recorded (by both the news media and bystanders) and videos of the incident quickly went viral on the internet.
During the ongoing chaos in Downtown LA, the Highway Patrol attempted to find a solution to remove the jam over the freeways and to facilitate evacuation routes to the desert. Such attempts reportedly failed as reinforcements were requested in the city.
What happened to the Highway Patrol after this incident is unknown. However, it is likely that they followed the same fate as the LAPD, as they (law enforcement) were on the front lines of the outbreak.
