This article is about the third season of the Telltale Series. For other pages with the same name, see: Season 3

Season 3, retitled The Walking Dead: Season Three and The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - A New Frontier, is the third set of episodes for Telltale Games' The Walking Dead and the successor of Season Two and Season One.

The third season was confirmed by Telltale Games on July 26, 2014 during Skybound Entertainment's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2014.[1][2] The first two installments were released on December 19, 2016.[3]

The game will factor in choices made in previous games. For players who played the previous games on a previous console generation, they will need to download a patch on that console, and upload their save via a Telltale account.[4]

Synopsis

When family is all you have left…how far will you go to protect it?

After society was ripped apart by undead hands, pockets of civilization emerge from the chaos. But at what cost? Can the living be trusted on this new frontier?

As Javier, a young man determined to find the family taken from him, you meet a young girl who has experienced her own unimaginable loss. Her name is Clementine, and your fates are bound together in a story where every choice you make could be your last.

Setting(s)

Season 3 primarily takes place in the state of Virginia, with Maryland, Ohio (determinant), and Tennessee (determinant) making brief appearances.

The beginning of Episode 1 takes place in Baltimore, Maryland. The rest of the episode takes place in and near a junkyard in Stafford County, Virginia. Also, parts of it is set in the community of Prescott, an old airfield in Stafford. In flashbacks, depending on choices made in Season 2, it may either feature Howe’s Hardware in Henderson County, Tennessee, Wellington in Lorain County, Ohio, an unknown road in an unknown state (possibly Virginia), or at a forest somewhere in an unknown state (possibly Virginia).

Most of Episode 2 takes place in Richmond, Virginia, with some parts being set in Prescott.

The rest of the season takes place in and outside of Richmond. In some flashbacks, Howe’s Hardware and a camp somewhere in Ohio can be featured, depending on past choices. There can also be a trailer that can be seen somewhere in Virginia. In Javier García’s flashbacks, Baltimore can be seen again, most around the García family home.

Trivia

  • During the Playing Dead interview of the finale of The Walking Dead: Season Two, Sean Ainsworth and Dennis Lenart stated that the third season is going to feature a "new angle" from the story.[7]
  • This season was originally announced to be released in November 2016, but was later postponed for December 20th.
  • Prior to release, Job Stauffer hinted that some Comic Series characters will appear in Season 3. [8]
  • This is the first season to have two playable characters as opposed to one, as seen in Season One and Season Two.
    • This feature was previously used in other Telltale games, such as Tales from the Borderlands, Jurassic Park, and Game of Thrones among others.
  • This game introduces a new feature that allows the player to move faster at select times while holding down another button.
  • None of the quick-time events in this game require the prompted button or action to be completed; any button pressed or action done will perform the intended sequence.
  • Unlike previous games, this season has no preview for the next episode and no option to replay certain chapters.
  • The recreate story option before playing the game confirms Victor's fate.
  • This is the only season where Lee does not appear at all (in dreams or flashbacks).
  • Originally, a 6th episode/DLC was planned for this season and would reveal how Clementine eventually found A.J., as well as the events that occurred at the McCarroll Ranch. However the idea for this episode was scrapped.
    • However, the episode "Take Us Back" uses the flashback of how Clementine found A.J.
