A flare gun is a tool used to signal someone for help or to start a fire.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Original TV Series[]

Aaron and Eric Raleigh carry flare guns while scouting out Rick's group for possibly living in Alexandria. After Eric falls into trouble, he uses his flare gun to signal for help.

A flare gun is also used by Nicholas when they attempt to save Aiden Monroe.

Flare guns are used by many other Alexandrians trying to draw the quarry herd away from the community.

Fear the Walking Dead[]

Flare guns are used by PADRE to draw herds towards their targets and either trap them or force them in a certain direction.

In King County, Dwight and Sherry reluctantly have Oriole and another PADRE guard use flare guns to draw a small herd to the Drake Family Home in order to drive out Morgan, Grace and Mo. However, it later has the unintended side effect of setting the house on fire, eventually burning it down.

After Grace's death, Shrike has two of her Prefects trap Morgan inside of the train car and then use flare guns to surround it with a herd in order to keep Morgan from escaping. Regardless, Morgan eventually manages to get out and put down the herd single-handedly by the time that Madison Clark finds him that night.

Shrike later uses a flare gun to draw the massive herd from the shipyard into the swamps towards her Prefects as they need to find Krennick amongst the walkers.

While trapped inside of his sinking houseboat by a herd, Morgan finds a flare gun and uses it to signal his location to Madison.

Dead City[]

Maggie Rhee uses a flare gun to signal Nina.

Ginny uses a flare gun, presumably taken from the bag that Maggie had given to her, to signal Negan to her position. The flare draws a nearby herd of walkers as well as Maggie, Negan and Perlie Armstrong. Negan at first mistakes the flare as Maggie signaling him after they had gotten separated.

Daryl Series[]

A flare gun falls out of Ash's Plane after it lands in Greenland and it is placed on the floor by Ash. Later, after being raped by Eun, Ash uses his flare gun to shoot Hanna in the neck, killing her, in the belief that he was saving Carol's life, unaware that Hanna had changed sides. Ash subsequently admits to Carol that it was the first time that he had ever killed another living person.

Telltale Series[]

Flare guns are used by the Monroe Colonists. While escaping from Monroe, Michonne fires a flare gun at Gabby, accidentally setting the community on fire, destroying it.

During the fight at the Fairbanks Family Home, Michonne can grab a colonist's flare gun and kill him with it.

Trivia[]

  • Walkers are temporarily distracted by flares, as they provide bright light and make a hissing noise, but once the flares go out, they go back to wandering.
