We all die. It's a question of surrender or survival, acceptance or denial.
―George to Travis Manawa.[src]

George Geary is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's Fear the Walking Dead. He is the husband of Melissa Geary and the father of their children Seth, Harry, and Willa.

Overview[]

George initially comes off as a stern and wise man who wants the best for his family. However, he is also quite pessimistic and cynical about the state of the world. After Nick rummages through the Geary's pills, he finds suicide pills which Nick speculates George wants to use so his whole family can die together. George's wife, Melissa, is shown to disagree with George's plan and tells Madison's group to take Harry and Willa off the island and away from George. When George finds out about this, he becomes enraged, however,it is interrupted when they find out Willa had taken the pills thinking it was candy. A zombified Willa ends up biting Melissa. George becomes grief-stricken by this and refuses to go with Madison's group. However, before the group leaves, he has a change of heart and allows them to take Harry with them. George is last seen on his knees, emotionless, most likely waiting for Willa to get him next.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Catrina Island, California[]

Not much is known about George's life prior to or as the outbreak began. During his youth, George studied Māori culture where at one point he went on an exchange and journeyed to New Zealand. In his later years George became a Park Ranger located near the wildlife refuge center, where he lived with his family including his wife and three children for several years.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Season 2[]

"We All Fall Down"[]

George and his family were still at their home when the Abigail docked at their pier. He and his eldest son, Seth, maintain fences to keep the walkers at bay.

Madison's group approaches George's house that she saw from the boat. Harry runs out to greet them, before George tells him to get back inside. Travis introduces himself to George, and asks permission to dock for the night.

Inside the house, George tells Travis that based on his communication with other ranger stations, he believes the entire country west of the Continental Divide has fallen and the border to Mexico has been completely sealed off. In the kitchen, George's wife, Melissa, probes Madison about her job as a guidance counselor and asks if she ever worked with younger children. Melissa introduces Madison to her teenage son, Seth.

George tells Travis that the apocalypse is all part of nature's plan. "The world couldn't sustain itself so it stood back and said enough. This is its course correction," he explains. He says he raised his family on the island and intends for them to stay on the island. As they head back to the boat, Madison tells Travis that Melissa may have flashed the light on purpose. She speculates that Melissa wants to leave the island but is too scared of George to say so.

The next day, Travis finds George at the house and recalls the days when Chris was mowing lawns and taking out garbage, rather than killing infected. "This is how we manage now," George says.

George enlists Travis' help mending a fence. He tells Travis about a massive herd of infected on a nearby marina and predicts that it is only a matter of time before the herd finds them. Travis asks why George isn't fleeing. "We all die. It's a question of surrender or survival, acceptance or denial," George says.

Travis, Madison, and Nick return to the Geary house to take Harry and Willa. Melissa is hurriedly explaining some of her children's quirks when George comes in. He angrily demands to know what is happening when the argument is interrupted by Harry. Something is wrong with Willa, he reports. Upstairs, Willa is found dead after ingesting the "power pills" from George's stash. Melissa cradles Willa, who opens her eyes, turns, and bites her. George agrees to let Travis take Harry but refuses to join them.

It is unknown what happened to George after his daughter and wife turned into walkers. He was last seen kneeling on the floor in grief as his wife was devoured by Willa. As Melissa reanimated shortly thereafter and went to the docks, he may have fallen victim to his reanimated wife and daughter.

Trivia[]

  • The casting call for this character used the name Benjamin Russell.[1]
    • George was described as "Early 50s. A weathered outdoorsman. A self-sufficient defender of his family in the apocalypse."
  • In Season 1, Tobias mentions that there have been reported outbreaks in five states, but does not name them. However, by George naming infected cities or regions that we learn that six states have infections- Los Angeles (California), Phoenix (Arizona), Portland (Oregon), Seattle (Washington) and the Rocky Mountain Ranger Station (Colorado). In addition to these five states, Utah also has infections.
  • George also mentions that Vancouver has outbreaks, which means that the infection has spread into Canada. This may be a reference to the fact that Season One was largely filmed in Vancouver.
  • It is also through George that we learn that Mexico has sealed its border with the United States though the Leigh Anne's log book showed that the vessel had been unable to get into Mexico earlier in the same episode.
