Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country located in Western Europe that is seen in The Walking Dead: All-Stars and mentioned in AMC's The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. It shared a border with the Czech Republic and Poland to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to the west and Denmark to the north.
Much like the rest of the world, Germany collapsed following the global outbreak of 2003 in the Comic Universe and 2010 in the TV Universe. In the latter, it can be presumed that it was overrun very quickly by early September 2010 given its border with France with the state of settlements and communities in the former nation unclear. In the former's case, settlements do exist in the former capital Berlin shortly after being overrun by August 2003.
Pre-Apocalypse
The history of Germany began with the Holy Roman Empire, which dominated central Europe for centuries. During the 19th century, the rise of Prussia led to German unification under the rule of Otto von Bismarck in 1871, forming the German Empire. This era saw rapid industrialization in the country thus cementing its status as a major European power.
After its defeat in World War I between the years 1914-1918, Germany faced economic collapse and political instability under the Weimar Republic. The rise of the Nazi Party lead by Adolf Hitler led to World War II lasting between 1939-1945, during which Germany occupied much of Europe but was eventually defeated by the Allies. The war left Germany in tatters, leading to its division into East Germany (under Soviet control) and West Germany (aligned with the West) during the Cold War.
In 1990, Germany reunified following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the resulting collapse of the Soviet Union.
By 2010, Germany had become Europe's economic powerhouse, playing a central role in the European Union.
Post-Apocalypse
Although it is unknown exactly what happened to Germany after the apocalypse, Valery Vashchenko states that the lights disappeared from the rest of the world, meaning it fell victim to the Wildfire Virus and was overrun sometime in 2010. Its close proximity to France, the virus' origin, possibly means it fell soon after the onset. It's unknown if any communities were set up after the outbreak.
Years after the outbreak, Victor Strand joins a group that consists a large amount of German expatriates who reside at Emissary Suites, in Georgia, USA.
According to Losang, some survivors from Germany live at the Nest in France.
