- "But what about—"
- —Haynes after Martínez tells him to let Megan go.[src]
Nothing is known about Haynes life before or when the outbreak began.
At some point after the outbreak began, Haynes became a guard in Woodbury.
Caesar Martínez leads a supply run group of five people including Haynes to the local Wal-Mart where they come across Josh Hamilton's group. Haynes takes Megan Lafferty hostage on the car park and holds his greasy hand over her mouth. The two groups stand off and Bob Stookey points his desert eagle at Haynes, commanding him to let Megan go. Martínez defuses the situation and orders the kid to free her which he reluctantly does. Haynes and the other men then invite Josh's group to live in Woodbury. The two groups spend another hour uneasily raiding the rest of the Wal-Mart together as well as the lawn and garden centre and home repair. On the drive back to Woodbury, Lilly sees Martínez make a joke which all of his men hysterically laugh at in the truck ahead.
After Josh is murdered, Haynes in an oversized hoodie grabs Lilly and holds her back from the action while she squirms in his arms as Martínez fights Sam in the street. Haynes then joins the rest of the town in watching the first Woodbury Arena fight between Sam and Stinson.
Haynes isn't mentioned or described again after his first novel, making it likely he died prior to The Fall of the Governor.
