Eugene Porter explaining a herd of zombies[src]

A Herd is a large group of zombies. They are usually attracted by sound, leading a few individuals to come together, eventually finding and merging with new groups, growing larger and larger and even more ferocious.

Herds wander around without a real purpose until attracted by sounds or prey. Herds are notably more aggressive than smaller groups, and the presence of zombies around other zombies almost creates a "synapse", or "hive-mind" effect, with them able to react more quickly by watching what others do rather than acting on their own. Herds can smash through the heaviest of barricades, tear down fences, and completely overwhelm humans in waves of undead bodies, and are essentially the zombie population at its most dangerous.

Herd
As described by Eugene Porter in the comic book, a herd is when a group of Walkers acts with a mob mentality. One zombie might brush his hand on a door knob, and another will see this and mistake it as an attempt to get in. Then he will beat on the door to get in, and the first zombie will see this and try to get in. This will spark a chain reaction. An example of this is in the start of the Season 2 finale where a zombie sees a helicopter and follows it to Hershel's farm.[1]

Pre-Apocalypse[]

The name "Herd" was adopted from the terminology for a herd of cattle. Cattle typically bulk together to graze or for protection, and, if angered, a herd can form a deadly stampede. This formed the basis for the post-apocalyptic terminology for large groups of walkers.

Eugene Porter first mentions the herd in Issue 53 and explains what a herd is to the post-prison survivors in Issue 54.[2]

A herd of "about 2,000 or more" zombies is first encountered by Rick Grimes, Carl Grimes, and Morgan Jones in Issue 59, as they are traveling from Cynthiana, Kentucky, with Abraham Ford to rendezvous with the rest of the survivors.[3]

A herd is later encountered by the people of the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Issue 79. The herd proceeds to surround the safe-zone leaving the survivors trapped inside. Eventually the herd breaks through the safe-zone's walls and starts to devour many of the residents, including Tobin and Douglas Monroe. When Carl is shot in the face and injured, Rick makes a final stand with the other survivors. They manage to repel and kill the herd and learn that the undead are a manageable threat.

In Issue 127, a herd is seen when Paul Monroe and his team are steering the massive amount of zombies away from the Kingdom.

In Issue 143, an extremely large herd is seen when Alpha takes Rick at gunpoint to a building nearby the Whisperers camp. The herd is estimated to be nearing the ten-thousands.

In Issue 162, the herd from Issue 143 is seen nearing Alexandria, due to Andrea shooting a bullet in the air to notify the Alexandrians that the Militia is back from fighting in the war. The Whisperers took this at their advantage, with them not fighting anymore and letting the herd do its job.

The herd invades Alexandria, overwhelming the trenches by piling onto them and easily breaking the gate, devouring Paula in the process. Fortunately, Andrea, Eugene, and other Alexandrians are able to drive most of the herd away and into the sea. Andrea, however, is bitten while saving Eugene.

In Issue 181, after leaving Oceanside, Rick, Pamela, and their entourage encounter a herd on the road and decide to steer it away. Things go awry after Pamela gets too close, but the Militia is able to eliminate the herd.

In Issue 190, a herd briefly invades the Commonwealth, but most of it is driven away while the rest is eliminated.

After the 15-20 year time-skip in Issue 193, zombies have become incredibly rare, to the point where they are now used as entertainment and are extremely expensive. It is, thus, safe to assume that herds are a thing of the past.

Eugene explained:

  • "Zombies in a herd are a force of nature. They don't operate on logic or reason. If one of them even so much as brushes a hand against your door [where you are hiding]--and another one sees that, mistakes that as an attempt to get in--it's over. That one starts trying to get in--the one who did the accidental tap thinks something's inside all of a sudden--he starts beating on the door with him. They would kill you all."[4]

After the Atlanta Police Officer crashes his car after hitting a walker, a herd attacks him, apparently killing the officer who reanimates shortly thereafter. Lee Everett manages to put down the officer with his own shotgun, drawing a number of walkers out of the nearby woods who chase him. After Lee escapes over a fence into Clementine's backyard, the herd is drawn away by nearby gunfire.[5]

In downtown Macon, Lee, Clementine, Kenny, Katjaa and Duck encounter a herd with one attacking Duck and nearly killing him. The group is saved by Carley and Glenn who emerge from the Everett Pharmacy Drugstore, shooting the walker attacking Duck and leading the others safely inside where they barricade the front gate. When Carley shoots a walker that was trapped in the bathroom in order to save Lee, it attracts the attention of the herd outside. However, they are drawn off by the sound of machine gun fire.[5]

Irene's screams at Glenn to go away draws a small herd of six walkers to the Travelier Motel, forcing Glenn to hide in the ice machine and call for help. When Lee and Carley arrive, the men convince a reluctant Carley to help them save Irene. Unable to shoot the walkers without drawing more, the three use a pillow to act as a makeshift silencer to shoot a walker leaning up against a car which they then roll into another walker, pinning it to a wall. Using porcelain from a spark plug taken from the car, Lee breaks out the truck window and retrieves an awl that he uses to put down the two walkers still roaming around the parking lot and the one trapped by the car, losing the awl in the process. Taking the motel's fire axe, Lee takes out the last two walkers menacing Irene. However, Irene has already been bitten and she commits suicide rather than turn into a walker herself.[5]

After returning to the drugstore, Lee observes a herd roaming around outside with Doug who thinks that they're mostly the people who had tried to break into a nearby hardware store for weapons. Spotting his little brother as a walker across the street, Lee realizes that he likely has the pharmacy keys. Reprograming Mr. Everett's universal remote, Doug turns on several TVs in a store window across the street which Lee breaks with a brick, allowing Lee to run across the street, put his brother down and retrieve the keys. However, the herd notices him, forcing Lee to flee back into the drugstore. After Lee and Lilly accidentally set off the alarms retrieving nitroglycerin pills for Larry, the herd, joined by the rest of the walkers in Macon, breaks into the drugstore and kills either Doug or Carley. The rest of the group manages to flee to safety despite Larry's attempts to leave Lee to die at the herd's hands. With the drugstore overrun, the group retreats to the motel which they begin to fortify against further walker attacks.[5]

On Day 2, a herd attacks a traffic jam on the Georgia Roadway near Gil's Pitstop. Although Shel and Becca manage to escape, their friend Annie is devoured by walkers. Clyde flees, leaving Vince, Danny and Justin trapped on the prison bus. As walkers board the bus, Vince is forced to shoot off the foot of one of his companions, leaving the man to the herd so that he and the other prisoner can escape.[6]

On Day 41, if Wyatt tries to save the badly injured Clyde after he and Eddie hit him with their car, a herd will emerge from the surrounding trees, forcing Wyatt to put Clyde down and shoot the walkers several times. After Nate's attack causes Eddie to flee without him, Wyatt is forced to abandon Clyde and run as more walkers emerge from the trees. Alternatively, Wyatt can abandon Clyde, but he will still have to shoot the approaching walkers as he tries to escape.[7]

Three months after the start of the outbreak, Lee, Kenny and Mark encounter Ben Paul, Travis and the trapped David Parker whose screams draw a herd to them. As Kenny holds off the herd, Lee attempts to free David. In the end, Lee either succeeds or fails, resulting in David getting devoured by the walkers and Travis accidentally getting shot or Travis devoured and David's leg amputated before the rest of the group flees the walkers back to the motel.[8]

Following the defeat of the St. John family, St. John's Dairy Farm is overrun by a herd.[8]

On a supply run into Macon, Lee and Kenny find the town deserted of both the living and the dead until Beatrice emerges from a building, chased by walkers. Beatrice gets bitten and Lee has the choice of whether or not to mercy kill her or let the walkers devour her as a distraction which gives Lee and Kenny more time to raid the drugstore for supplies. Either way, the herd eventually overruns the ruined drugstore, forcing Lee and Kenny to flee back to the motel with what supplies they managed to get.[9]

A herd attacks the Travelier Motel, attracted by the gunfight between the Motel Survivors and the Save-Lots Bandits. The herd kills at least two of the bandits and bites Duck as Lee covers the others while Kenny gets the RV running. Lee shoots several of the walkers, buying Kenny the time that he needs. The group escapes from the motel as the herd overruns it and the bandits continue fighting the walkers.[9]

At the Highway Overpass, a massive herd of thousands of walkers is spotted approaching by Ben Paul, presumably attracted by the noise of the Train. Everyone except for Omid and Lee, who are on the bridge cutting a dangling tanker free, get on the train to leave. The two then try to jump onto the vehicle and while Lee makes it, but Omid lands badly, hurts his leg, falls off, and starts limping towards the moving train. Christa jumps down to help and they manage to get back on, escaping from the herd as the overpass burns from Lee dropping a blowtorch into the spilled fuel.[9]

Shortly after Lee's group arrives in Savannah, a herd is attracted to their location by Molly ringing some nearby bells. Trying to flee the herd, Lee saves Kenny from getting bitten, but Clementine and Ben get cornered. Ben runs away in fear and Lee tries to save Clementine, but Chuck gets there first, holding off the herd and ordering the others to run. The group manages to escape into Fivel's Mansion and the herd eventually wanders off by the time that Lee buries Fivel while Chuck manages to escape into the sewers.[10]

Near the riverfront, Lee and Kenny hear more bells ringing off in the distance and witness a herd being drawn towards it. When Molly meets the two men, she explains that she uses the bells to draw the dead around the city so that she can scavenge the areas that they vacate before they come back. However, during the scuffle with Molly, Kenny's gun goes off, drawing the herd back. Molly, Kenny and Clementine escape up a fire escape while Lee escapes into the sewers when he can't make it onto the fire escape.[10]

In the sewers, Lee finds a small herd feeding on Chuck's body, Chuck having committed suicide after getting cornered. Lee manages to lure the walkers away and escape into the Savannah Hospital where he meets Vernon and his Cancer Support Group. Vernon is able to lead Lee safely back through the sewers to the mansion where he finds Molly, Kenny and Clementine, having managed to safely escape from the herd.[10]

In Crawford, the group discovers that it's been overrun by a massive herd made up of the zombified residents due to Anna Correa's rampage after Dr. Walter Ashe had tried to make Anna terminate her pregnancy. At St. Felicity's Catholic Elementary School, the group splits up to get the supplies that they need to fix a boat. Outside of Herman's Auto Body, Lee spots several walkers nearby which get through a falling fence and then into the garage through a propped open door, drawn by a car alarm that is accidentally set off. However, Lee and Molly manage to escape through a skylight and jump to the school's roof while Kenny and Brie flee from more walkers that followed them in from the playground. They manage to barricade the door with Lee's hatchet, but Lee finds several more walkers cornering Vernon and Christa in the nurse's office, and he guns them down. Searching for another tape to get the safe combination for Crawford's medicine supply, Lee returns to the alley where the attacking walkers are now trapped inside of the garage. Putting down Ashe, Lee recovers another tape and his locker combination and escapes as more walkers approach. However, after they get all of the supplies, Ben makes the mistake of removing the hatchet from the door, letting the herd in as bells inexplicably ring. Molly gets cornered and either runs off, leaving her fate unknown, if Lee fails to shoot her attacker, or will be saved by Clementine if she came with them. The group manages to break into the armory, but not before Bree is devoured by walkers. Trying to escape through the bottom of the bell tower, the group only lets more walkers in. Taking a shotgun from a corpse in the bell tower, Lee shoots several of the advancing walkers with Christa shooting a few that nearly get him. The group finds a ladder to the school roof and, from there, a path back into the sewers. However, a zombified Crawford Oberson, hanging from the bell, grabs Ben from behind. If Lee fails to act, both Ben and Oberson will fall to the floor below where Ben will be devoured by the herd. Alternatively, Lee can shoot Oberson with his shotgun and choose whether or not to pull up Ben. If he pulls Ben up, he escapes with Lee and the others, but he is devoured by the walkers if he falls. As the herd swarms the bell tower, the group successfully manages to escape.[10]

The same herd that the group encountered at the overpass later follows the track all the way to Savannah, presumably having followed the loud train. While in the Crawford bell tower, Vernon notices their approach, but doesn't mention what is concerning him besides asking if the group came in by the railroad. As Lee and his companions search for Clementine in the hospital morgue, the herd swarms the city, completely overrunning it in comparison to the far smaller numbers of walkers previously present, flooding both the sewers and all of the buildings.[10][11]

Trapped in the hospital morgue, Lee figures out a way to escape using the elevator while his companions keep an eye on the entrance to the sewers. After possibly amputating Lee's bitten arm, the group climbs a ladder in the elevator shaft to the roof, finding the hospital flooded with walkers and surrounded by thousands more. By ringing the bell in a nearby bell tower, Lee is able to draw all of the walkers to one side of the building while the group flees down a fire escape on the opposite side and safely makes it back to the mansion.[11]

As the group debates their next move, hundreds of walkers attack the mansion, including a zombified Brie, who is put down by either Lee or Omid. After a failed attempt to keep the walkers out and exhausting all of their remaining ammo, the group barricades themselves in the attic where they eventually manage to break through the wall and into the neighboring house which is also full of walkers. Finding a balcony, the group jumps to a nearby rooftop to escape the herd.[11]

Depending on if Lee saved Ben or not, Ben falls into the alleyway below when the balcony breaks and becomes impaled on a piece of metal. As Lee and Kenny try to save him, walkers flood the alleyway and Kenny sends Lee to safety while he uses his last bullet to mercy kill Ben who fears being eaten alive. Kenny is then apparently overwhelmed and devoured. Alternatively, if Ben had died in Crawford, Clementine's walkie-talkie is accidentally dropped into the Savannah Warehouse while the group is crossing the city via the rooftops. While retrieving it, Christa becomes trapped with the walkers flooding the building and Kenny saves her. After exhausting his ammo, Kenny is apparently overwhelmed and eaten by the herd.[11] However, it's later revealed that Kenny somehow manages to escape from the herd in both situations and get out of Savannah on his own.[12]

Due to a broken sign a block away from the Marsh House, Lee becomes separated from Omid and Christa and orders them to get out of town to meet up with him or Clementine later. As Omid and Christa successfully escape from the city, Lee, with no other options, drops down into the herd and begins fighting his way through it to the Marsh House. Lee puts down a number of walkers, getting covered in walker blood in the process which causes the herd to ignore him more and more as he moves through it, allowing Lee to reach the Marsh House safely.[11]

After the Stranger's death, Lee and Clementine are accosted by a walker that completely ignores Lee before he puts it down. Realizing that it's because he's covered in walker blood, Lee covers Clementine in walker guts and they begin slowly making their way through the thousands of walkers outside of the Marsh House. However, Clementine stops when she sees her mother and father amongst the herd, revealing to her that they died and reanimated. A weakened Lee collapses and Clementine drags him into a nearby jewelry store where she barricades them in. Lee guides Clementine through putting down a zombified security guard and getting his gun and keys to escape through the store's emergency exit. After either shooting Lee to keep him from turning or leaving Lee to turn, Clementine exits the jewelry store back into the herd and still covered in walker guts, she manages to escape from Savannah and meet up with Omid and Christa.[11]

On Day 184, if Russell chooses not to go with Nate, a herd will emerge from the surrounding woods, forcing Russell to take the ride.[13]

By Day 400, Gil's Pitstop is abandoned and overrun by a herd.[14] However, the herd is gone by the time that Clementine, Christa and Omid visit the abandoned gas station.[15]

When Roman's Group accosts Clementine and Christa, a small herd attacks as Clementine tries to escape from Winston. Clementine manages to escape from the walkers who devour Winston.[15]

After getting bitten by Sam, Clementine encounters a small herd that she can't escape in her weakened condition. However, Luke and Peter Randall save her, putting down a few of the walkers and escaping from the rest. Afterwards, Luke notes that there are more walkers around than they've ever seen in the area before.[15]

While Clementine, Peter and Nick are investigating the massacre of Roman's Group at the Fish Traps, a herd attacks, biting Peter's ankle and potentially killing him depending on who Clementine decides to help.[15]

If Clementine chose to save Peter, they are trapped in a cigarette truck for a number of hours with the dying Peter ultimately sacrificing himself to the herd so that Clementine can escape. When Clementine returns with the rest of the Cabin Group, they find all of the walkers dead and Peter disemboweled, but shot in the head by an unknown survivor that presumably took care of the other walkers. If Clementine went with Nick, they hide out in the Forest Shed until Nick takes on the walkers single-handedly to buy Clementine to escape. When Clementine returns with the others, they find all of the walkers dead and Nick still alive, drunk in the shed.[12]

On the Station House Bridge, Luke and Clementine face a small herd of walkers, including Beth. Luke falls to the lower parts of the bridge where he gets trapped with a walker trying to reach him. Clementine manages to single-handedly take down the herd and save Luke.[12]

The shot from Nick killing Matthew draws another herd across the bridge, forcing the Cabin Group to flee up the mountain.[12]

A large herd is drawn to the Moonstar Lodge by the spinning of a wind turbine caused by a storm. After shutting down the turbine, the Cabin Group and the survivors living in the lodge battle the herd, potentially resulting in Nick's death depending on what Clementine had told Walter about him. Eventually, William Carver and his group arrive and gun down the remaining walkers.[12]

A small herd amasses outside of the walls of Howe's Hardware and the strip mall that it's a part of. The fighting between Kenny and Mike results in a boarded-up window breaking in a shoe store that they are fortifying, letting in the herd. The two men and Clementine manage to put down the walkers, although Clementine is nearly killed by one before Troy saves her with his crossbow, much to Troy's annoyance.[16]

It's mentioned that herds have hit the hardware store before and given the discussion between a guard and Tavia, at least one didn't go well for Carver's group.[16]

A massive herd, estimated to be at two to three thousand walkers by Hank, gathers to the south of Howe's Hardware. Although Carver is unconcerned by it, Luke states that it's bigger than anything he's ever seen in the area before and he believes that it will wash right over the community. Needing to escape, Kenny comes up with the plan of luring the herd in and using it as a cover to escape with Jane adding that they can cover themselves in walker guts to walk through the herd as it attacks. As part of their plan, Clementine activates the store's PA system, broadcasting an old recorded announcement to draw the herd in and then blocking the door if Alvin was killed to keep anyone from entering. If Alvin is still alive, he sacrifices himself to kill Hank and buy Clementine and the others time to escape. As the herd begins to overrun Howe's the Cabin Group covers themselves in walker guts from two walkers put down by Clementine and Jane, but they are found by Troy. Jane shoots off Troy's penis after tricking him, leaving the sadistic guard to be devoured by the herd. While at first successful in sneaking their way through the herd, Carlos is shot in the neck by the guards on the roof and devoured and Sarah's screams draw the herd upon the rest. Sarah escapes, chased by Luke and Nick (Determinant) while Sarita is bitten, leading to her death. After getting separated from the others, Clementine manages to restore her camouflage and meets up with Rebecca and the two get stuck until Jane helps them by creating a "cowcatcher" to help push through the herd and to safety. As the survivors of the Cabin Group escape, Howe's Hardware is overrun by the herd which reaches the roof where the surviving guards are trying to fight it off.[16][17]

After fleeing from Howe's Hardware, Sarah takes cover in a trailer park which quickly gets surrounded by walkers. If Nick survived the attack on Moonstar Lodge, he attempts to get help, only to fall victim to the herd and get stuck in the fence as a walker. Searching for their friends, Clementine and Jane find the park, putting down a couple of people who fell victim to walkers but haven't turned yet and searching their bodies for anything useful, eventually finding Sarah's glasses under one. Hearing Sarah's screams, the two move in to help with Clementine putting down a zombified Nick if he's present. Putting down a few of the walkers milling around, Jane teaches Clementine a new trick for fighting walkers by targeting their legs to take them to the ground before putting them down once they're incapacitated. Hiding behind a barricade, the two find walkers trying to get into a trailer, drawn by Sarah's screams. By putting a dead walker on a truck's horn, Clementine and Jane are able to draw the herd off for long enough to get to the trailer before the distraction ends and they turn back on them. Barricading themselves inside, Clementine and Jane are reunited with Luke and Sarah where Clementine tries to snap Sarah out of it. Eventually, the herd breaks through the trailer door and Clementine, Luke and Jane escape through the skylight to the roof and over the trailer park fence. If Clementine succeeded in snapping Sarah out of it, she joins them. Otherwise, Sarah is devoured by the herd as the others escape.[17]

After escaping from the trailer park, Jane reveals that she and her sister Jaime got trapped by a herd. Jane managed to escape through the roof to another building, but Jaime gave up and allowed herself to be devoured by the herd.[17]

When Rebecca goes into labor, her loud cries draw a large herd to Parker's Run, complicated by the fact that Luke is having sex with Jane rather than being on watch, thus allowing the herd to get close before anyone notices it. Kenny takes out his growing rage by bashing in a walker's head repeatedly with a crowbar before joining the others in fleeing to the observation deck at the Visitor's Center. The herd climbs the stairs to the deck while Clementine, Mike, Luke and Jane try to hold them off and Kenny delivers the baby. When the group tries to move an old cannon to block the gate, it causes the observation deck to break and for most of it to fall. If Sarah is still alive, she falls with the deck and gets pinned down amongst the debris. Whether or not Jane tries to save Sarah, she is ultimately devoured by walkers. With walkers climbing the fallen portion of the deck, Clementine uses her hatchet to drop the rest of the deck on them, crushing most of the herd and securing the Visitor's Center from danger. As Rebecca has delivered her baby during this time and her cries stop, most of the remaining walkers eventually wander off, though a few remain around the building. However, enough are gone that Jane is able to safely depart that night and the rest of the group within the next few days.[17]

After Clementine shoots a lone walker that attacks Kenny, a small herd chases the Cabin Group survivors as they cross a frozen lake towards the Unfinished House. Hitting thin ice, two of the walkers fall into the lake. Luke falls into trouble due to thin ice and Bonnie and determinately Clementine shoot the walkers to cover him, putting down most of the small herd. However, Luke falls in and drowns and Bonnie falls in after him and drowns as well if Clementine doesn't try to break the ice and save Luke.[18]

Driving through a blizzard, Clementine, Kenny, Jane and AJ encounter a small herd at a roadblock a mile away from the Woodchuck Rest Area. Even though it's snowing, it's not cold enough for the walkers to freeze. Trying to escape, Clementine runs over two walkers before crashing with one walker getting trapped under the truck and another coming through the window. As Jane flees with AJ, Clementine shoots both walkers and then several more that she encounters on her way to the rest area. Clementine, Kenny and Jane all make it to the rest area, but Jane pretends that AJ didn't survive in order to provoke Kenny.[18]

If Clementine returns to Howe's Hardware with Jane, they find the herd gone and no sign of any of Carver's group, leaving it unknown if they survived the attack and escaped or if the herd killed everyone.[18] During their time at the store, the two clear out the bodies of all of the walkers that were killed.[19]

If Clementine ends up alone with AJ, she encounters a herd and safely passes through it by covering both herself and the baby in walker guts.[18]

If Clementine leaves with Kenny, they are set upon by a herd after a car crash that leaves Kenny crippled. Knowing that he can't escape, Kenny sacrifices himself by drawing the walkers' attention upon himself, allowing Clementine and AJ to escape as he's devoured.[20]

After ending up alone for whichever reason, Clementine and AJ are forced to hide in a small building from a passing herd and they are joined by Ava. The three remain hidden together as the herd passes and Ava gives Clementine the chance to join the New Frontier.[21]

Javier, Kate, Gabriel and Mariana Garcia work to stay ahead of a large herd four years after the start of the outbreak. Monitoring the movements of the herd near their former campfire, Javier and Kate note that it appears to be growing and is now larger than they've ever seen it before. While at the junkyard, Kate expresses worry about the herd catching up with them.[20]

Shortly after Javier meets Clementine, they spot the herd that Javier and Kate were tracking nearby. Unable to safely make it to the junkyard, the two rush to Prescott for the night for safety, only to find the herd having already arrived with several walkers outside. Tripp refuses to let Javier and Clementine in until the walkers are cleared out. The two shoot several walkers, but Clementine runs into trouble when the bullets that Eli gave her turn out to be duds. With the help of covering fire from Tripp, the two safely get inside the town, joined by Francine and Tripp agrees to let them stay the night until the herd moves on.[20]

After returning to the junkyard, Javier, Clementine and Tripp/Eleanor find it wrecked and a number of walker bodies strewn about and realize that a herd of hundreds of walkers had hit it, although the majority of the herd has since moved on. The group is joined by Mariana who was able to hide until the herd moved on and find Kate and Gabriel trapped in a truck by several remaining walkers. Javier, Clementine and the person that brought them back quickly put down the remaining walkers and rescue Kate and Gabriel. Gabriel tells Javier that they had almost run out of bullets fighting the herd while he was gone and had to take cover.[20]

When the New Frontier attacks Prescott, they bring along a truck loaded up with a herd of walkers. When a gunfight breaks out, Badger has the truck rammed through the town gates, releasing the herd upon the population while making it harder for the residents to fight back by releasing tear gas well. Javier manages to put down a few of the walkers and escapes with his family, Eleanor and Clementine in a car that they steal from a New Frontier member that Javier kills while Tripp and Conrad manage to escape in Tripp's van. However, the herd overruns Prescott, killing all of the residents alongside the New Frontier, leaving Javier, Kate, Gabriel, Clementine, Eleanor, Tripp and Conrad as the only survivors.[21]

At the Diner and Self Service Station, Javier's Group moving a car to clear a path to Richmond releases a herd from a nearby underpass. Javier and Clementine put down the walkers attacking the car and in its way, allowing Kate and Eleanor to continue on towards Richmond. However, more walkers emerge from the underpass and from the road, forming a massive herd of hundreds that corners the group who manage to escape onto the rooftops. The group debates a plan, knowing that the herd could take days to clear out, before encountering Jesus who offers them the solution of going through a nearby abandoned train tunnel instead.[21]

In the tunnel, the group encounters another herd which attacks, nearly killing Gabriel before Jesus and Javier save him. The group escapes through a train car and Javier, Clementine and Gabriel bar the door, keeping the herd from following them.[21]

After being kicked out of New Richmond, Jesus spots a herd moving in the same direction as Javier's group a quarter of a mile away. The group encounters a small cluster of the herd and fights their way through it, but Javier gets overpowered and nearly killed by two walkers, one of them Chris, before Clementine saves him and puts the walkers down with Javier's baseball bat. If Clementine separated from the rest of the group in the tunnel, she mentions that there's so many walkers around New Richmond that she had to cover herself in walker guts just to get away.[22]

When the group reaches the New Frontier's Warehouse, the herd catches up with them, forcing them to fight their way through several walkers. As the others hold the fence up, Javier opens the garage door with a car jack and the group flees inside. If Conrad survived the tunnel, he is determinately eaten by the herd. Once inside, joined by David, the group barricades the entrances against the walkers. Following a skirmish with Max, Badger and Lonnie, the survivors escape out of the back where the herd hasn't reached yet. After Jesus goes off on his own to warn his people about the New Frontier's raids, the others drive off in Badger's truck before the herd can overrun them.[22]

At the public works where the New Frontier stores a large truck and their construction equipment, a small herd gathers outside of a flimsy wooden fence. When Javier's group drives off in the truck, the noise of it starting attracts the herd to break through the boards, leaving the guards to deal with them.[19]

A massive herd gathers outside of the walls of New Richmond. During the fight in the square, Kate accidentally crashes a truck into the wall after being hit with a Molotov cocktail. This opens a breach in the wall and allows the herd to enter.[19] The herd overruns Richmond, killing a number of people and trapping the survivors in various buildings. Javier's Group makes their way across an overpass to where construction equipment is stored, losing Tripp/Ava in the process. At the construction site, Javier covers himself in walker guts in order to turn on a generator and create a distraction, but David takes off with Gabriel, believing that Richmond is lost. Depending on Javier's choices, he can possibly go after David and Gabriel or with Kate to save the city. Ultimately, Kate manages to seal the breach either on her own or with Javier and determinately Clementine's help, using a bulldozer to place a truck in the hole. Once its sealed, Jesus and two soldiers from the Kingdom use their horses to round up the herd and draw it away. If Kate goes alone, she succeeds in sealing the breach, but when Javier, Clementine and Gabe return for her, they find Kate as a walker amongst the herd and Javier can shoot her or let her go. If Clementine goes with Kate, they manage to seal the breach together and save New Richmond, but they get separated and Kate is never seen again.[23]

When David leaves with Gabriel, they get surrounded by a herd after Gabriel causes the truck to crash while trying to stop his father from leaving. If Clementine goes after them alone, she succeeds in saving Gabriel, but David is bitten and turns, and Gabriel has to put him down. If Javier goes after them, he is able to put down the herd and save his nephew, but alone he is unable to save his brother in time as well and Gabriel shoots David to prevent reanimation. If both Javier and Clementine go after them, they fight the herd outside of the truck together, ultimately taking out all of the walkers and saving both David and Gabriel.[23]

Three days after saving New Richmond, Clementine departs to find AJ. At the Diner and Self Service Station, Clementine finds and guns down a small herd before continuing on her way.[23]

At the train station, a herd attacks Clementine and AJ, drawn by a grenade explosion, but they are saved by Marlon. They later return with Louis and Violet and face off against the same herd, now significantly grown, to scavenge supplies from the train station. As a distraction, Louis climbs on top of a boxcar and rings a large bell, drawing the herd's attention away from the others. Depending on Clementine's reaction to Abel, she can shove him out of the window where he will be bitten by the herd, although Abel manages to escape and survive by amputating his arm. Fleeing from the train yard, Clementine, Louis and Violet engage a few of the walkers, putting them down and getting away.[24] The herd presumably either eventually leaves or is put down by the Delta as they are later spotted with supplies that are believed to have been looted from the train station.[25]

Shortly after Clementine's arrival at Ericson's Boarding School, she joins in the effort to dispatch a small herd outside of the walls in order to protect a returning hunting party. The walkers are believed to have been drawn to the area by the grenade explosion and Clementine's subsequent car crash as there are more than usual. The Boarding School Survivors and Clementine use a combination of melee weapons, Bow and Arrows and various traps to dispatch and incapacitate the various walkers. After hooking up with the hunting party, the group dispatches the walkers that were merely incapacitated, but Aasim is caught by surprise and nearly eaten by a surviving walker before Clementine saves him. As Clementine struggles with the walker, Rosie intervenes and mauls the walker's head, putting it down. A few minutes later, AJ spots a crow feasting on the corpse of one of the dead walkers.[24]

When Clementine falls into danger from Lilly and Abel, James sends a herd to save her. Unaware of James' intentions, Clementine puts down several walkers after escaping before James reveals himself and draws the remaining walkers away.[26]

During a run for food at Ericson's Greenhouse, it is overrun by a herd that the survivors are unable to fight off. Ms. Martin orders her students to run while she stays behind to hold the walkers off. Ms. Martin is bitten in the process, but she manages to barricade the greenhouse doors and barricade herself in the greenhouse's lab. Before dying and reanimating, Ms. Martin ties herself to a planter in order to prevent herself from harming the children. Years later, the students believe that the greenhouse is likely still swarming with walkers, but they are forced to return to it in order to get supplies to fight off the Delta's upcoming attack. However, the herd is completely gone aside from a few walkers still trapped inside by Ms. Martin that Clementine puts down after climbing in through a skylight. In the lab, Clementine, Ruby and Mitch find the zombified Ms. Martin, still trapped in the planter. Clementine puts down Ms. Martin and, with the greenhouse reclaimed from walkers, the Ericson's students are able to reclaim it for their own use.[26]

The battle between the Boarding School Survivors and the Delta draws a herd to the school. Due to Lilly lighting the ground in front of the gates on fire as she leaves, most of the walkers become engulfed in flames as they enter, rendering them too dangerous to dispatch with melee attacks. Clementine manages to use Marlon's bow to dispatch the dangerous walkers while the other survivors are able to take out the ones not on fire.[26]

When Clementine goes to enlist James' help against the Delta, she discovers his camp overrun by a small herd, preventing James from reaching his Whisperer mask. Clementine can put down some or all of the walkers or respect James' request to just draw them all away instead.[25]

James reveals that he keeps a small herd inside of his barn to protect them. At James' request, Clementine dons his Whisperer mask to walk amongst them and see the walkers as he does.[25]

At Clementine's request, James leads the herd from his barn to the S.S. Stewarts Fitzgerald with more walkers joining it as they move. Covering themselves in walker guts, Clementine, AJ and Louis/Violet use the herd as a cover to sneak aboard the ship, ducking behind walkers as shields from the Delta's bullets. However, the walker guts get washed off when they enter the water and several walkers attack, forcing Clementine to put them down while Louis/Violet and AJ get the ship's hatch open. Ultimately, the entire herd is gunned down by the Delta, but the distraction that they provide successfully allows Clementine's team to sneak aboard the ship and rescue their friends.[25]

A massive herd is drawn to the beach by the destruction of the S.S Stewarts Fitzgerald, attacking and killing the surviving Delta soldiers and biting Minerva several times as she enters a berserker rampage following the deaths of Sullene and Gina. With the help of covering fire from Clementine, Aasin, Omar, Louis and Violet manage to escape in a horse-drawn cart driven by Ruby and Willy, although the cart takes off before Clementine and AJ can join them due to a grenade explosion spooking the horses. Joining up with Tenn and possibly James, Clementine and AJ manage to escape from the herd through a cave system. If James was killed by Lilly, he is a part of the herd chasing after them.[27]

As Clementine, AJ, Tenn, and Louis/Violet attempt to cross a broken bridge, Minerva reappears in a deep state of infection and having lost her mind. Minerva's singing and gunfire draws a herd onto the bridge which she uses as cover for her attack on the others. Covered in walker blood and in a deep state of infection, Minerva is ignored by the herd, giving her the advantage. Clementine uses Marlon's bow to shoot several of the walkers as the others cross the gap, but Minerva manages to disarm her and slice Clementine's left leg open. Finally, Clementine manages to shoot Minerva in the chest, breaking her camouflage due to the fresh blood and causing the walkers to devour her. Depending on if Clementine trusted AJ to make the hard choices or not, the herd also devours Louis/Violet or Tenn after AJ shoots him in the neck to save the other person. If Tenn survives, he later claims to have found his sister's body, confirming that she didn't end up reanimating. If AJ chose to kill Tenn, he later encounters his friend as a lone walker near the fishing cabin. Clementine, AJ and the survivor are able to make it across the break in the bridge and escape from the herd.[27]

On the other side, the group is attacked by another herd that was drawn by the battle. The other survivor manages to escape over a fence while Clementine and AJ climb up some rocks. However, Clementine is bitten on her injured leg in the process. Chased by the large herd, Clementine and AJ manage to make it to James' barn where they barricade themselves inside and seal off all of the ways into the main room. However, the herd surrounds the barn and leaves the two trapped. Believing that she's doomed, Clementine orders AJ to cover himself in walker guts so that he can sneak out after killing her. Instead, AJ amputates Clementine's bitten leg.[27] After cauterizing the stump, AJ stands on the wheelbarrow to stab the walkers through the heads. Although there is a lot of walkers, AJ does it fast because the walkers are dumb and just come to him. After putting Clementine in the wheelbarrow and covering her in walker guts, AJ is able to wheel her out of the barn, which is now clear of walkers, and to the school.[28]

Shortly after Rick Grimes first meets Morgan Jones, a small herd, including a zombified Jenny Jones, wanders the streets of the King County neighborhood at night, drawn by Morgan using a gun to put down a walker earlier that day in order to save Rick's life. One trips a car alarm that potentially draws more, but Rick, Morgan and Duane are able to safely wait it out inside of the Drake Family Home. By the next morning, all but a single lurker have wandered off and Rick puts the lurker down with a baseball bat.[37]

Later, Morgan shoots a few passing walkers in order to draw the herd back. However, he is unable to bring himself to put down his wife when she arrives and the herd eventually wanders off again.[37]

A massive herd of walkers appears in Atlanta, Georgia, when Rick Grimes arrives there in search of his family. The herd traps Rick in tank and devours the Siggard Family Horse.[37] With help from Glenn Rhee, Rick is able to escape and joins a group that gets trapped in a nearby department store by the herd. The group is able to escape from the store as the herd overruns it, leaving Merle Dixon trapped on the roof.[38] Merle is later able to escape and by the time Rick, Glenn, T-Dog and Daryl return to rescue him, the herd is gone from the store[39] aside from a few stray walkers.[40]

A small herd attacks the Atlanta Survivor Camp at night, killing and infecting multiple people including Ed Peletier and Amy Harrison. The camp's defenders, particularly Shane Walsh, Jim and Morales manage to hold them off using a combination of guns and baseball bats. When Rick, Glenn, T-Dog and Daryl return from Atlanta, they help finish off the herd with weapons from the Sheriff's bag of guns.[40] The next day, the camp survivors burn the bodies of the dead walkers while making sure their own dead don't reanimate. The attack forces the survivors to abandon the location as no longer safe while Jim is later revealed to have been bitten and eventually chooses to be left behind to turn.[41] This particular herd is later referred to as being more of a small pack compared to what is typically seen by survivors.[42]

After Dale's RV breaks down on the Vehicle Jammed Highway due to its troublesome radiator hose, a massive herd of hundreds of walkers is spotted heading down the highway. The Survivors takes cover under various vehicles as the herd passes by and mostly avoid notice. However, T-Dog slices open his arm on a car door and attracts several walkers to him. Daryl is able to save T-Dog by killing a walker with a screwdriver then using the walker's corpse and a corpse from a nearby car to cover himself and T-Dog, effectively masking their scent and allowing the two men to play dead. One walker enters Dale's RV through its open door and attacks Andrea Harrison, but she is able to kill it with a screwdriver through the eye. However, after the herd appears to have gone, Sophia Peletier emerges from hiding only to be attacked by two straggling walkers who chase her into the woods. Rick kills the walkers using a rock to avoid notice, but Sophia disappears.[42]

While on a mission to get medical supplies for Carl Grimes, Shane Walsh and Otis spot a massive herd of walkers at the Cranwall High School that appears to mainly be made up of the FEMA and military personnel as well as the civilian survivors that had been at the high school before it was overrun. The two are able to distract the herd with flares from an abandoned patrol car and retrieve the needed supplies, but make too much noise and are chased by the herd into the school.[43] The herd chases the two men into the gym where they create a distraction and escape out the gym and locker room windows respectively. However, both men hurt their leg and use up their ammunition as they try to escape to their vehicle in the parking lot. Down to his last bullet, Shane shoots Otis in the leg and escapes as the herd focuses on devouring the other man.[44]

While investigating the Wiltshire Estates in search of Sophia, Shane and Andrea inadvertently draw the attention of a small herd. Fleeing back to Shane's car, Andrea is forced to focus and finally shoot a moving target. Andrea kills several walkers, allowing the two to reach Shane's car before suddenly turning back and shooting more walkers before they escape.[45]

During the confrontation between the Living and Rick, Hershel and Glenn at The Carriage Bar, a relatively small herd of walkers are drawn in by the gunfire. Three walkers attack the wounded Sean and though Hershel kills one, the other two devour Sean. More come from all directions as Hershel attempts to amputate Randall's leg and Rick and Glenn struggle to hold them off and buy Hershel the time he needs. Finally, Rick yanks Randall's leg off the fence post its impaled on and they flee in Hershel's truck.[46]

When Rick and Shane take Randall Culver to the Mert County Public Works, they are unaware of a small herd inside of the building. During Rick and Shane's fight, Shane throws a wrench at Rick, shattering a window and alerting the walkers inside. Rick kills the first walker to emerge and uses its body to hide under as the rest emerge. Most corner Shane in a school bus where he systematically attracts them with his blood and then stabs them in the head with a knife, allowing him to kill a few, but not to escape. After a walker discovers Rick alive, it and two others corner Rick, but he manages to kill them. Retrieving Shane's car with Randall's help, Rick shoots several walkers and helps Shane escape out the back of the bus, Randall driving over a walker's head as they drive away. The confrontation leaves only three of the walkers still alive and they attempt to chase Rick, Randall and Shane without success.[47]

A herd of walkers is drawn out of Atlanta by a passing helicopter. As the herd continues down the road, it is joined by more and more walkers until the herd numbers in the thousands. As the herd passes through the swamp near the Greene Family Farm, it is attracted by the sound of the gunshot coming from Carl Grimes putting down a reanimated Shane Walsh. Spotting the herd, Hershel Greene, Maggie Greene, Glenn Rhee, T-Dog, Daryl Dixon, Jimmy and Andrea Harrison attempt to kill as many walkers as they can using the farm's vehicles and plan to then draw the herd away using the cars. Rick and Carl lure many into the barn and set it on fire, killing them. However, while trying to rescue the two with Dale's RV, Jimmy is overrun and devoured. While fleeing from the house when it becomes clear that the farm is lost, Patricia is similarly devoured. Carol Peletier is nearly killed looking for Carl, but is saved by Andrea who becomes separated and flees into the forest with the Sheriff's bag of guns while Carol is rescued by Daryl. Separately, the Greene family, the Grimes family, Glenn, Daryl and Carol manage to escape the farm and reunite on the Vehicle Jammed Highway. Andrea evades most of the herd, but is eventually cornered and nearly killed before she is rescued by Michonne Hawthorne. The Greene Family Farm is left overrun by the herd, abandoned by all of its living inhabitants.[48]

In Season 3, a herd of walkers appeared to have settled themselves in and around the West Georgia Correctional Facility. The area is known as the "Red Zone" by the people of Woodbury, Georgia.[49]

On their way to King County, Georgia, Rick, Michonne and Carl get surrounded by a small herd of walkers, including Erin, after their car gets stuck in the mud at a pile-up. Rick quickly dispatches the herd, and they free their car.[50]

Carl and Michonne find the King County Café overrun by a small herd of walkers. Michonne creates a distraction by wheeling in two of Morgan Jones' rat traps from outside, allowing Carl and Michonne to sneak into the cafe and retrieve a picture of the Grimes family. The two successfully retrieve the picture with Michonne stealthily putting down a walker that grabs Carl from behind the bar. However, a rat gets free and leads the herd towards the two, forcing them to flee outside, taking out a few walkers as they go. With Carl insisting on going back for the picture, Michonne has Carl stand outside of the front door, holding the herd's attention, while she sneaks in through the back and grabs the picture and a cat statue.[50]

A large herd gathers outside of the prison fence, drawn by the gunshots and chaos from those infected with the prison flu running rampant. Rick is forced to sacrifice the piglets in order to draw it away when the herd threatens to break through the fence.[51]

A herd not far from the red zone is found by Daryl Dixon, Tyreese, Michonne, and Bob Stookey in "Isolation". It is numbered at 7,500 walkers.[52]

A large herd gathers outside of the prison fence while everyone is either too sick to keep the walkers from pilling up or too busy elsewhere. According to Maggie, it's larger than the one that had previously almost broken through the fence before being drawn away by the piglets being sacrificed. While Maggie goes to help her father, Rick attempts to shore up the fence with Carl's help, but the herd eventually breaks through and overruns the prison yard. Out of options, Rick and Carl arm themselves with assault rifles and successfully gun down the entire herd. Once the herd is taken down, Rick and Carl go through the bodies and put down a few survivors.[53]

The fighting between the prison group and the Governor's militia attracts a herd of nearby walkers which eventually occupy the ruined prison, rendering it uninhabitable. Clara, a woman who committed suicide in front of Rick in "30 Days Without An Accident", is among the walkers.[54]

After escaping the overrun prison, Daryl and Beth Greene hide from a herd in the trunk of an abandoned car during a thunderstorm. As it takes multiple hours for all walkers to pass, as evidenced by time lapses in the scene, it can be assumed it is a large herd passing by.[55]

A massive herd is drawn towards Terminus by the gunfire from the Survivors' attempted escape. The herd is spotted by Carol Peletier and Tyreese Williams who hide with Judith until the herd goes by. Carol and Tyreese prevent Martin from using fireworks to draw the herd away from Terminus. In order to save her friends, Carol slathers herself in walker guts and makes her way to Terminus where she witnesses the residents fending off the herd. Using a rifle and Martin's fireworks, Carol detonates a large propane tank, setting Terminus on fire and destroying a large portion of the fence. The herd is able to invade Terminus, overrunning the residents despite their best efforts to stop the walkers. Carol is able to enter Terminus disguised as a walker and help free her friends who leave Terminus to be destroyed by the overwhelming numbers of the herd.[56]

Upon meeting Rick's group, Father Gabriel Stokes reveals that the only place nearby that hasn't been scavenged yet is a food bank that is overrun by a dozen or so walkers. Finding them in the flooded basement, Rick, Michonne, Sasha, Bob and Gabriel climb into the basement and form a barricade of some shelves. As the walkers approach and are blocked by the shelves, the group stabs them from behind the safety of the barricade. However, Gabriel panics and flees when he sees his reanimated church organist amongst the undead. With Gabriel in trouble, the group pushes the shelves down on the walkers in front of them, crushing them and fight their way to Gabriel's aid, putting down the remaining walkers. However, a single walker that they had missed drags Bob under water, but he emerges, apparently unharmed but shaken, and impales the walker on a pipe before Sasha finishes it off. When pressed by the others, Bob insists that he's fine.[57] However, Bob is later revealed to have been bitten and he confirms that it was by the walker at the food bank that had dragged him under water. Bob later succumbs to the infection from the bite and dies.[58]

When Abraham Ford, Rosita Espinosa, Eugene Porter, Glenn Rhee, Maggie Greene, and Tara Chambler are on the way to Washington, D.C., a massive herd blocks their path on the road. This eventually leads to Eugene's confession that he does not know the cure to the outbreak.[59]

A large herd attacks the Woodlands Mall Construction Site as Tobin's construction crew works on expanding Alexandria's wall. Francine falls off of an excavator's bucket in front of the herd and injures herself, but Tobin orders the rest of the construction crew to fall back, intending to leave Francine to die rather than risking their lives to save her. Abraham rushes to Francine's rescue and, with the herd closing in from all sides, helps her up into the excavator. Crawling under the excavator and shooting a few walkers that try to follow him, Abraham tosses Francine his machine gun and orders her to focus on shooting the rear end of the herd while Abraham uses a large tool to take out the ones in the front who are forced to come at him single file due to the tight fit between the front of the excavator and something next to it. Against Tobin's objections, Bruce joins in and together, Abraham, Francine and Bruce take out the entire herd.[60]

A significantly large herd numbering at 30,000 walkers [52] was first seen in the Season 6 premiere, "First Time Again". It was trapped inside a rock quarry near Alexandria. Rick and the other residents planned to direct the herd away, but as they were doing a trial run part of the barrier trucks fell and released the herd, forcing them to execute the plan immediately. As they were leading the herd away, half of it broke loose due to a horn and made its way towards Alexandria, eventually arriving right at the community's wall in "Now" and began to gather around in "Heads Up".

Another herd was also present in "Thank You" at an abandoned town that Aiden and Nicholas had previously scouted for supplies. During that previous run, an accident resulted in the death of Will, a former scout for Alexandria. The herd in that abandoned town was also responsible for the deaths of Sturgess, Annie and David. Later on, it led Nicholas to commit suicide after he and Glenn were cornered in an alleyway.

After leaving King County, Morgan fights a small herd in the woods, violently bashing their heads in with the butt of his gun. He then burned all of their bodies. After the fire draws in more walkers, Morgan puts them all down and burns them too.[61]

The section of the herd that broke off in "First Time Again" was able to enter Alexandria when the church watchtower, located outside of the wall, fell over in "Start to Finish". The herd flooded the streets, forcing all of Alexandria's residents to barricade themselves inside their homes.

In "No Way Out", the herd roamed the streets of Alexandria. Rick, Carl, Michonne, Jessie, Sam, Ron, and Father Gabriel used guts smeared on sheets to move through the herd unnoticed, planning to get outside and draw it away with cars at the quarry. Sam panicked before they could make it out and drew the attention of several walkers and was devoured. This caused a chain reaction that led to the deaths of Jessie and Ron and to Carl being shot in the eye.

Denise and Owen move through the herd but Denise is grabbed and Owen saves her resulting in him getting bitten, Denise promises to save him if they get to the infirmary.

They continue to move through the herd, but Owen is shot by Carol and - as a last stand - grabs several walkers to save Denise, she then sorrowfully leaves him to reanimate and heads towards the infirmary arriving at the same time as Rick, Michonne and an unconscious Carl.

In a fit of rage over losing Jessie and almost Carl, Rick heads outside to face the herd himself. Aaron, Michonne, Heath and Spencer head outside to help and soon Olivia, Eric and Bruce, join alongside the rest of the able bodied Alexandrians.

Glenn and Enid go together to save Maggie but Glenn is surrounded and is about to be devoured when Sasha and Abraham arrive and shoot all the walkers, saving Glenn.

Daryl pours all oil from the truck into the lake and fires his rocket launcher, creating a huge fire, all the walkers see this and walk towards it killing themselves, The Alexandrian army take this time to kill all possible walkers. This marks the end of the super herd.

On their way back from the Kingdom Rick and his group stumbles upon a herd on a highway near the Sanctuary cutting most of them in half with a wire between two cars and let some explode with TNT.

When the Survivors try to get guns from Oceanside, the commotion draws a nearby barnacle-encrusted herd. Upon noticing the herd, the two groups team up together and take out all of the walkers without losing a single person.[62]

At the beginning of Season 8, the Militia lures a massive herd to the Sanctuary and take down its fences, effectively leaving the Saviors under siege while they destroy all of the Savior outposts. The plan is stated to be to use the herd to force the Savior lieutenants to surrender and allow them to kill Negan Smith.

In "The Big Scary U," Negan and Gabriel Stokes are left trapped together in a wooden trailer while the situation in the Sanctuary grows more dire. Negan convinces Gabriel to work with him and they smear themselves in walker guts in an attempt to reach the entrance to the Sanctuary safely. Despite the walkers eventually seeing through the trick and attacking, the two men manage to make it into the Sanctuary. However, using walker guts in such a way leaves Gabriel with an infection that is making him progressively more ill.

In "Time for After," Eugene Porter tries to use a makeshift drone and music device to lead the herd away but is thwarted by Dwight. At the same time, Daryl Dixon, Tara Chambler and Morgan Jones work together against orders to break the Sanctuary walls and allow the herd in to finish the Saviors. Though they succeed, Eugene proposes a plan using most of the Saviors remaining weapons and ammunition to clear out the herd. As seen in "Honor," after managing to clear out the inside of the Sanctuary, several Saviors fire upon the remaining walkers outside from the Sanctuary's upper windows, allowing Saviors to pour out and kill most of the remaining walkers. According to Simon in "How It's Gotta Be," his men draw the remainder away and he threatens to use them against the Hilltop until Maggie agrees to his demands.

In "Monsters", after succumbing to his gunshot wound and dying, Eric Raleigh reanimates and stumbles off to join a nearby herd. The reanimated Eric is spotted by his devastated boyfriend Aaron who has to be held back by Scott from going after him.

In "Some Guy," Ezekiel and his surviving forces come up against a herd of walkers, mainly made up of the slaughtered Kingdom forces. When Ezekiel and Jerry get cornered, Carol sacrifices her chance to stop the remaining Saviors to save the two men. Fleeing, the three encounter a small herd near a polluted creek, presumably people who drank from the creek and died. Cornered, they are saved by Shiva who sacrifices herself so that they can escape.

A small herd is seen gathered outside of the Hilltop following the attack by the Saviors, presumably attracted by the gunfire.[63] The herd is still outside of the Hilltop a day later and has to be drawn away by Kal and the guards when Carol returns with Henry.[64] As the preparations for the final battle begin, Alden and the Savior defectors offer to draw the herd away from the Hilltop completely. Maggie accepts their offer and the former Saviors succeed without suffering any harm. Upon their return, they are accosted by Morgan who was unaware of their mission.[65]

While looking for Henry and the Savior escapees, a walker herd is spotted by Morgan and Carol. As Carol splits off to find Henry, Morgan continues in the direction of the herd and is joined by Rick. After the two are captured by the escaped Saviors, Rick and Morgan warn about the herd which attacks the abandoned dive bar the escaped prisoners are using as their base. The Saviors free Rick and Morgan after the herd kills several of the Saviors and the two men and the Saviors work together before Rick and Morgan suddenly turn on the Saviors and kill them. In order to kill Jared, Morgan purposefully traps him to be devoured by several walkers. In the fight, most of the herd is killed and the much if not all of the rest appear to wander out of the bar again once the Saviors are all dead.[66]

As the Militia makes their way to the final battle with the Saviors, they spot a massive herd filling the horizon in the distance. The Militia is horrified by the sight, particularly as none of them have ever seen a herd so big before. Rick notes that "the world is changing" before they move on. After defeating the Saviors, Rick uses the herd as part of his motivational speech, pointing it out and warning everyone that it will be coming for them unless they can learn to stand together.[67]

Eighteen months after the defeat of the Saviors, a supply convoy is ambushed by a small herd of walkers which is quickly attacked by Daryl and Michonne while the rest of the group attempts to free a stuck wagon. During the fight, Ken is bitten and kicked by a horse. To buy Siddiq time to treat Ken, Rick and Ezekiel join Daryl and Michonne's efforts. Together, the four eliminate the small herd, but Ken dies of his injuries.[68]

During work on repairing a bridge, the work crew has to account for the presence of two nearby herds, one around a hundred members and the other which is even bigger. Blasting to get rid of a rock slide draws the smaller herd which Jerry and Justin are tasked with redirecting. However, Justin fails to do his job and the herd attacks the lumber yard, resulting in Aaron suffering so much damage to his left arm that it later has to be partially amputated. Rick arrives with reinforcements which engage the walkers. Finally, Rick sends a pile of giant logs rolling down the hill over the walkers, killing them all.[69]

After being killed by Oceanside at their former settlement, Justin is fed upon by a herd before they eventually wander off. After the herd is gone, Justin reanimates himself and wanders off as well.[70]

As work on the bridge grinds to a halt, Rick is warned by Eugene that two huge herds are nearby, but are moving parallel and will not combine. Later, Jed's rebellion draws the attention of one of the herds, putting a trapped Rick and Daryl along with the camp into danger. After escaping, Daryl suggests leading the walkers onto the bridge which won't bear their weight and they will get swept out to sea. However, Rick refuses to give up on the project and instead tries to use a horse to draw the herd away. Rick inadvertently leads the herd chasing him to the second herd and is thrown from his horse and seriously wounded as the two herds combine.[71] Rick manages to recover and though seriously hurt, gets back on his horse and continues leading the combined herd towards the bridge. Rick leads the herd across the bridge, but it holds. As Rick's friends desperately try to help him, he notices a case of dynamite fall over on the bridge and shoots it, destroying the bridge and hundreds of walkers caught in the explosion. The herd still on the road continues walking over the bridge, falling through the hole blasted in the middle of it and getting washed out to sea. Unknown to everyone else, Rick survives and is rescued by Anne and her friends in a helicopter. According to the radio chatter after the explosion, the Militia moved north and break up the rest, bringing in some guns to help.[72]

Six years after Rick's apparent death, Magna's group is ambushed by a herd near an old barn. Judith Grimes clears a path out for the group using Rick's old Colt Python and they escape.[72] A few walkers follow but are put down by Eugene.[73]

At Magna's rig, they find that it has been destroyed by walkers though Magna believes it to be a different herd than the one that Judith rescued them from. Later, a massive herd attacks the group outside of an old factory. The group manages to escape and Michonne realizes that its the same one that destroyed Magna's rig when she spots Bernie amongst them. Michonne mercifully puts down Bernie and they are able to escape.[74]

At the same time Michonne's group faces the large herd, a small herd is drawn to Daryl's campsite where they get caught in various traps while trying to get at Dog. Though he runs into trouble, Daryl manages to rescue Dog and dispatch the herd with the help of Henry.[74]

While trying to put up radio equipment, Eugene and Rosita are forced to run from a strangely acting herd.[74]. Due to Eugene's injured knee, Rosita has to leave Eugene behind as she tries to evade the herd. She is eventually rescued by Aaron and Jesus and warns them of the threat she witnessed.[75]

While searching for the missing Eugene, Daryl, Jesus and Aaron spot a massive herd in a field that Daryl tries to redirect. However, the Whisperers amongst the herd prevent the misdirection from working. After being rescued, Eugene suspects that the walkers are evolving as the most likely explanation for their adaptive behavior. The herd eventually chases the party into a cemetery where they are joined by Michonne, Magna and Yumiko. During the battle with the herd, Jesus is killed by a Whisperer who is then killed along with four more Whisperers by Jesus' friends. The herd and the Whisperers advance on the group,[75] but they escape the cemetery after killing four more Whisperers. Though Daryl locks the herd in the cemetery, a Whisperer opens the gate and lets them out.[76]

The next day, Michonne's group spots a small herd of six walkers trailing them and leads them onto a covered bridge where Daryl and Michonne ambush the walkers. Of the six, three prove to be Whisperers. Michonne's group kills the walkers and two of the Whisperers while the third surrenders. Before they can question their captive too much, a larger approaching herd forces the group to push on to Hilltop with their captive.[76]

After reaching the abandoned Sanctuary, Negan is forced to face off with a small herd made up of six reanimated Saviors, including Richie. Negan easily dispatches the other five walkers with a pipe and locks Richie out, but chooses to return to Alexandria and puts Richie down before leaving.[76]

While searching for the missing Alden and Luke, a group from the Hilltop comes across a small herd feasting on the two missing men's horses. Being careful to keep an eye out for Whisperers amongst the herd, the group quickly dispatches the walkers who all turn out to be real walkers. Upon closer examination, its discovered that the horses were cut open and skinned, meaning that the walkers hadn't been the ones to kill them.[77]

Later that night, Magna's group go out searching for their missing friends and find strange tracks. However, the presence of a large herd in the distance causes Magna and Yumiko to decide to turn back while Connie and Kelly decide to continue searching for their missing friends.[77]

The day after Alden and Luke disappear, Alpha arrives at the Hilltop with the Whisperers. The loud argument with the Hilltop residents draws a herd of walkers which Alpha has her people redirect so that they can safely finish the conversation. However, a mother can't quiet her baby so she abandons it to the walkers. Connie rescues the baby, fighting off multiple walkers until Daryl arrives to help with Kelly and Tammy Rose Sutton. The herd eventually moves on before the confrontation between the Hilltop and the Whisperers is over.[78]

As the Whisperers face off with the Hilltop, the Kingdom races a herd to kill enough elk for the upcoming fair. Their side mission to retrieve a projector bulb also races the approach of this same herd with the Kingdom team getting out before the herd can arrive.[78]

At the Royal Cinema, the Kingdom forces find it filled with a herd of walkers, most of which they draw away with a boom box playing music which eventually dies. However, around thirty to forty walkers are left trapped in one of the theaters. After Jerry drops the bulb amongst the herd, the Kingdom team works together to eliminate the trapped herd which proves to be small enough for them to deal with by using the stairs as a choke-point and each member of the team targeting a few walkers each.[78]

After Alpha kills Helen and Sean, the Whisperers feed their corpses to a nearby herd. That night, as Alpha tries to force Lydia to kill Henry, a herd suddenly attacks the Whisperer camp, killing at least three Whisperers. As the Whisperers don their masks to hide amongst the attacking herd, a disguised Daryl and Connie, having lured the herd to attack the camp, use the opportunity to rescue Henry and Lydia.[79]

On the way to the Kingdom for the trade fair, the Hilltop delegation is attacked by a herd which the delegation struggles to fend off. Drawn by the cries of Adam Sutton, a group of walkers attack Earl Sutton who is almost overwhelmed before Tammy Rose saves him. As the group continues to fight, several Highwaymen arrive led by Ozzy and help to dispatch the herd.[80]

Following the attack on the Whisperer camp, Beta leads a herd that includes a Whisperer who was bitten during the camp attack to hunt down Daryl's group and retrieve Lydia. The group blockades the staircases in a tall building while waiting on the top floor, forcing the Whisperers to go up alone. After killing the other Whisperers and trapping Beta in an elevator shaft, Connie draws the herd away by using her slingshot to break out a van's windows, allowing the group to safely escape.[80]

After Judith goes missing, Michonne finds her fighting a small herd of walkers. Together, Michonne and Judith kill the herd.[81]

Alpha shows Daryl a herd of thousands upon thousands of walkers in a ravine and reveals that her people are amongst them, steering the herd which Alpha calls a horde. Alpha threatens to unleash the herd upon the Coalition if they cross her again.[82] Months later, the herd has somehow left the area undetected. Daryl and Carol later visit the spot where Alpha showed Daryl the herd and find it still gone, but Carol spots Alpha herself in the trees below.[83] Daryl later states that there were tens of thousands of walkers in this herd.[84]

The Coalition discovers a beached ship on Oceanside's beach with a herd trapped inside. Having trained for such a moment and armed with shields, arrows and spears, the Coalition flawlessly takes down the herd, even after they burst out of the ship en masse.[83]

While taking a ride together, Daryl and Carol encounter and take out a few walkers in some friendly competition. However, they also draw a small herd in the process. Together, the two manage to eliminate the herd without much trouble.[83]

As the Coalition fights a fire started by the crash of a satellite, the noise and flames draw a herd to the site. Unable to leave as they can't risk the fire spreading, the Coalition is forced to fight the herd with Carol at one point using a walker's blood to douse some flames and Daryl dropping a burning tree onto several walkers with an axe. Though the Coalition members suffer some injuries, they are able to eliminate the herd without anyone dying or getting bit and put out the fire.[83]

Over the course of a few days time, waves of walkers besiege Alexandria who, despite exhaustion, manage to kill all of the walkers in each wave. Though the Alexandrians fear it is Alpha sending her horde after them, Lydia expresses doubt as Alpha would send the entire horde at once instead of waves at a time. Instead, Eugene suggests that the walkers had been drawn to the area by the satellite crash.[84]

After Alpha's death, Beta is drawn to the Grand Hotel where he plays some of his old music throughout the night, drawing in a massive herd. In the morning, Beta puts down Alpha's zombified head, removes a part of her face to replace the ripped part of his walker mask and leaves unnoticed through the herd.[85]

Beta leads the massive herd first to Alexandria which is abandoned and then towards Oceanside before eventually diverting the herd to the Tower where the survivors are holed up.[86] In order to draw the herd off, a small group uses walker guts to slip through unnoticed by the walkers while the others cover them from inside the hospital. By wounding Whisperers, they are able to break their disguise and the herd finishes them off. However, Beatrice falls victim to the herd after getting wounded by a Whisperer. Hooking up a sound system designed by Luke to a wagon, the group draws the herd away with loud music, but during the journey, the Whisperers attack, destroying the wagon and the sound system and killing Oscar. The group infiltrates the herd and assassinates the Whisperers steering it back towards the Tower. After being stabbed through both eyes by Daryl, Beta is devoured by the walkers. With the Whisperers dead, Lydia and Carol lead the herd off of a high cliff and into a river, ending its threat for good.[87]

Shortly after the defeat of the Whisperers, Maggie, Daryl, Kelly, Cole and Elijah encounter a herd inside of a parking lot filled with shipping containers. Wanting to spend the night in one of the shipping containers, Maggie decides to clear the herd out rather than looking for a place at higher ground nearby. Although mostly successful, the group encounters trouble when a number of walkers try to force their way out of a shipping container and Maggie hurts her arm trying to shut it. While Kelly and Cole cover them from the walkers still wandering around, Maggie, Daryl and Elijah manage to close the shipping container door and seal the walkers inside while the herd that was wandering the parking lot is put down, making it a safe place to spend the night. The parking lot is still clear when the group returns to spend the night after defeating the Attacker and finding the remaining Wardens in the area.[88]

While searching for supplies, Gabriel and Aaron encounter a herd laying in a field that Gabriel draws out with a small alarm clock. As the walkers head for the alarm clock and with the herd in their way, the two men quickly dispatch the walkers from behind while they're distracted.[89]

At a market that might have supplies, Gabriel and Aaron find it full of walkers. Gabriel climbs to the roof where he finds some bodies before climbing into the store through a roof ladder and taking out the walkers while they are focused on Aaron outside. However, he finds no supplies inside.[89]

While collecting herbs in a field, Carol encounters a herd of around a dozen or so walkers that comes her from two different sides. Frustrated, Carol single-handedly takes on and eliminates all of the walkers with just her knife, forgoing the use of her bow.[90]

Trying to walk his motorcycle back to Alexandria, Daryl spots a small herd moving down some railroad tracks, including a zombified soldier that might have the pocket knife that Daryl needs. Despite stepping on a stick and drawing the herd's attention, Daryl rushes down the tracks past the walkers that start closing in on him and he finds the walker that he needs fallen into an old drainage ditch. After a fight, Daryl puts down the walker and finds the knife that he needs. Daryl then escapes as the rest of the herd falls into the ditch and gets trapped, but has to take out two more zombified soldiers that were straggling behind the rest of the herd before he can fix his motorcycle.[90]

While on the run from the Reapers, Negan, Maggie and Alden follow screaming to where Agatha is fending off a small herd to protect the mortally wounded Duncan. With a little help from Maggie, Agatha manages to put down all of the walkers.[91]

As Maggie, Negan, Alden and Agatha try to make their way through the woods to the supply drop in Arbor Hills, they spot another herd that is twice as large as the last one. The herd begins following them as they make their way through the woods and catches up to them as the group stops upon seeing a burned walker on a cross marked as a Judas. As Maggie helps the severely wounded Alden to safety, Negan and Agatha work to fend off the herd. However, during their escape, Agatha gets separated and is bitten in the arm by a walker. With walkers surrounding her, Agatha orders the others to go as she's devoured by the herd which distracts the walkers long enough for the others to get away.[91] The Reapers later retrieve Agatha's body and string it up over Meridian.[92]

A herd manages to break through Alexandria's weakened walls, killing at least one resident before the Coalition manages to kill those who got inside and cover the hole. Walkers continue to congregate around the walls while the residents work to spread them out, worried that since they got through the weakened wall once, they will do it again.[93]

When Aaron, Carol, Jerry and Lydia visit Hilltop in search of supplies to help fix Alexandria's walls, they find it overrun with a small herd of walkers, made up of many reanimated Coalition soldiers who had died in the fall of the Hilltop. After putting down their reanimated friends, the four finds a larger group of walkers controlled by Keith, a surviving Whisperer. After putting down the herd, they capture Keith.[93]

When Kelly finds Connie's camp, she learns from her sister's notebook that she was forced to move with the Whisperers' herd for days with no supplies before she had eventually managed to escape it.[94]

While on the run from an unseen threat, Connie and Virgil a herd outside of a house. The two manage to fend off the walkers long enough to get inside with Virgil putting down one that follows them in while more and more walkers join the herd from the surrounding area. Trapped by the herd outside, they are hunted by the feral survivors inside. Cornered, Connie covers herself in walker guts and opens the door to let the herd in. The herd ignores Connie and Virgil whom she is covering behind her body and devours most of the Ferals. Two are able to escape outside, but they are killed by Kelly as they try to attack Connie and Virgil. A few walkers follow them out but they are put down by Rosita and Magna.[94]

During Sebastian Milton and Kayla Brand's date near where Eugene, Shira, Ezekiel and Princess are clearing houses, a small herd emerges from the woods to threaten the two. Seeing this, Eugene quickly rushes to their rescue and puts all of the walkers down with Shira's help. A lone surviving walker approaches Kayla from behind while Eugene and Sebastian are arguing, but Shira puts it down with her spear. However, she inadvertently splashes Kayla with walker blood in the process.[95]

After encountering the reanimated Teressa, Maggie comes up with the plan to gather up a massive herd and lead them against Meridian in order to defeat the Reapers using Whisperer tactics. Putting down a few nearby walkers, Maggie, Elijah and Gabriel construct Whisperer masks for themselves and Negan trains Maggie in how to lead herds like a Whisperer. Maggie is able to lead a number of walkers to the group's camp while the rest are gathered from where they are trapped in a nearby building. Once the herd is ready, Negan, Maggie, Gabriel and Elijah march it on Meridian with Elijah being saddened to discover his sister amongst the walkers, unable to put her down without breaking his cover.[95]

When the herd finally arrives at Meridian, the Reapers notice their strange behavior and Daryl offers to lead them away. Pope agrees with his plan, but he sends Paul Wells to enact it instead. As Wells leads the herd through the nearby woods, more walkers suddenly come in from the other direction and as Wells desperately tries to fight them off, he is stabbed by Negan and Maggie and then devoured by the herd. Pope admits that he had sent Wells out as a test to see if Maggie was using the walkers as a weapon and the herd backs off until that night when they return, but hit a minefield set up outside of Meridian by the Reapers. As Negan and Elijah continue to lead the herd through the minefield despite suffering injuries from shrapnel, Maggie and Gabriel split off and sneak inside of the walls with the help of Daryl secretly killing the patrolling Powell. Pope has Ancheta prepare the hwacha which will be able to kill most of the walkers, allowing the Reapers to take care of the rest. However, Maggie hotwires a truck and drives it through the gate, letting in the herd while the Reapers desperately attempt to fend them off. Pope orders Ancheta to fire the hwacha into the courtyard despite his people still being in there rather than risking calling them back and alerting the enemy to his plan. Rather than allow him to go through with it, Leah and Daryl kill Pope and Ancheta and cut the fuse to the hwacha. However, Leah blames Pope's murder on Daryl and orders her people to secure the gate and prepare the hwacha once again. As Daryl joins the others in the courtyard, Leah has the Reapers pull back and fires the hwacha on the herd, Negan, Maggie, Elijah and Daryl.[96] Although Maggie's team and most of the Reapers get to safety, the herd is completely destroyed by the hwacha.[97]

At the same time as Maggie's group marches on Meridian, a massive storm blows down a part of the wall in Alexandria and sets the windmill on fire, allowing a herd, drawn by the fire to invade the community. The residents split up to deal with the herd, try to get the wall fixed and put out the fire so that it will stop drawing the walkers. However, at least one more breach is opened in the wall closer to Aaron's house and a number of walkers get into the house despite the defenders efforts to hold them off, forcing the hiding residents to flee upstairs while Judith and Gracie get trapped inside of the flooding basement. The residents heading upstairs intend to keep the walkers confined to the first floor and they don't call for help as the others need to get the breaches fixed and the fire put out so that more walkers don't show up.[96] Rosita, Dianne and Lydia successfully keep the walkers bottled up at the bottom of the stairs while stabbing at them from the landing above. The walkers break into the basement, but hearing Gracie's distress whistle, Aaron rescues the two girls, but becomes trapped himself. Lydia escapes out a window and rescues Aaron from the basement. With Rosita and Dianne handling the walkers just fine on their own, Aaron and Lydia go to help get the fire put out. In the end, the fire is put out, the breaches are closed and all of the walkers are eliminated without anyone dying. When Maggie's team returns from Meridian, several walker corpses are burning.[97]

During a ride along with Mercer, Connie and Kelly witness him single-handedly saving two Commonwealth soldiers from a herd, cutting them all down with a machete.[98]

On the road from Oceanside to the Hilltop, Daryl, Aaron, Pamela Milton, Lance Hornsby, Mercer and the Commonwealth Army encounter Maggie, Elijah and Dianne fending off a herd in the road. Maggie struggles to protect a horse while simultaneously fighting the walkers. With a little help from Daryl, the three manage to eliminate all of the attacking walkers.[99]

As the group is stopped, the Commonwealth's forward unit picks up another herd nearby and while they are dealing with it, the others go hunting.[99]

During the Commonwealth's visit to the Hilltop, a herd arrives at the perimeter, with a few getting through the fence that the residents have set up. On Mercer's orders, the Commonwealth soldiers shoot down the herd and deposit the bodies nearby. Maggie later reports to Pamela that no one was hurt in the attack.[99]

On Sebastian's orders, Alves and Castle bring Daryl and Rosita to a hill overlooking a massive herd surrounding Cooper's House which Daryl and Rosita initially think that they are supposed to clear out. However, Sebastian reveals that he actually wants them to cover themselves in walker guts, sneak through it and retrieve money that is hidden for him in a panic room. After Sebastian threatens their children, the two reluctantly agree and successfully manage to sneak through the herd. Inside the house, Daryl and Rosita discover two men who had killed each other and learn from the trapped April that they were a part of an earlier group that Sebastian had sent in, only April and the two men actually making it through the herd. As Daryl repairs the house's generator, he draws the attention of several walkers who he puts down. Daryl's attempts to break into the safe sets off the house's alarm, drawing the herd into the house before Rosita manages to shut down the alarm. The three barricade themselves inside the panic room and prepare to sneak out using the walker guts again when Carol and Mercer show up to help and shoot their way in through the herd. With Carol and Mercer not having enough ammo to shoot their way out, Daryl has them cover themselves in walker guts from a walker that he drags in and they attempt to sneak out. While they are at first successful, April becomes frightened when she gets caught on a walker's jacket and puts it down, drawing the attention of all of the walkers in the house to them. The group manages to put down all of the walkers in the house, but not before they kill April. After keeping April from reanimating, Daryl, Rosita, Carol and Mercer successfully manage to sneak through the herd outside and escape.[100]

On the road between Riverbend and the Hilltop, Lance, Daryl, Aaron, Gabriel and a detachment of Commonwealth soldiers encounter a herd in the middle of the road. Rather than have his men deal with it, Lance orders Aaron and Gabriel to do it, supposedly so that they can save bullets. Aaron and Gabriel are joined by Daryl and together they effortlessly take out all of the walkers with Daryl only firing a single round to take out two walkers at once.[101]

While hiding from Lance's forces, Daryl and Maggie take out several walkers in a building while outside, Lance and his forces shoot several others. As part of Daryl's plan, as two Commonwealth soldiers stop to deal with a herd, Negan uses his old Whisperer mask to blend in and attack the soldiers, stabbing one while the other one is torn apart by walkers. The herd moves on by the time that Lance and the rest of his men arrive.[102]

A massive herd of thousands of walkers approach the Commonwealth, getting past the outer perimeter and the various checkpoints. When Rosita asks how they managed to get past the outer perimeter, Mercer tells her that somebody wasn't doing their job. Mercer, his soldiers and Rosita go out in three jeeps with mounted machine guns and Mercer divides his forces to have two of the jeeps split the herd up and each lead half of it in opposite directions. However, one of the jeeps overturns and Mercer and Rosita go to the two soldiers' aid. As Rosita uses their jeep's mounted machine gun to gun down approaching walkers, Mercer attempts to help the soldiers aboard. However, the herd grabs one of the soldiers and tears him apart despite Rosita and the other man's covering fire. Although shocked by the loss, Mercer drives away and he and his men proceed with the plan, Mercer's jeep and the other remaining jeep splitting the herd in half and each one leading half away.[102] It's later revealed that Pamela purposefully had the herd lured to the Commonwealth as an excuse to trigger a lockdown and clear the streets.[103]

On the orders of Lance, Roman Calhoun and Shira murder several Commonwealth janitors who subsequently reanimate and form a small herd. The herd attacks the residents of the Commonwealth during Founders' Day, killing several residents, including Sebastian, before they are put down by Daryl, Judith and Mercer.[104]

Aaron, Jerry, Elijah and Lydia spot a herd on their trek from the Commonwealth to Oceanside and, as a result, they divert to Kingdom 2.0 for the night. However, the herd contains a variant walker that retains some measure of intelligence, and it leads the herd to Kingdom 2.0 and even opens the gate for the herd. The four fight off the walkers, but are forced to retreat onto a roof when they are outnumbered, and the variant walker begins to open the door to their hiding spot. Believing that they are dealing with surviving Whisperers, Aaron sends Lydia and Elijah off of a side of the roof that's free of walkers to separate out the Whisperers. However, the variant walker climbs onto the roof and attacks Jerry. Aaron grapples with the walker and rips off its face and is shocked to discover that it's actually just a walker and not a Whisperer. Aaron puts down the variant walker and, by the next morning, the four have completely eliminated the herd. In the aftermath, Aaron suggests that the walker was one of the type that he'd heard stories about that could climb walls and open doors, although Aaron had never actually witnessed them in person before.[105]

While escaping through a tunnel to avoid Commonwealth patrols, Carol and Lance encounter a herd that attacks them. Fighting off the walkers, Carol puts them down with her AR-15. However, after the herd appears to be completely cleared out, Carol and Lance hear the sound of more approaching walkers and they quickly flee from the tunnel.[106]

At Junction 7, a large herd attacks four Commonwealth soldiers who spread out to take care of them. As the soldiers deal with the walkers, Daryl, Carol, Rosita, Gabriel and Maggie take advantage of the distraction to ambush and take them out. By the time that Daryl returns after killing Jones, the herd has either been eliminated by the others or has moved on.[107]

While avoiding Commonwealth patrols, Lydia spots a massive herd nearby. Having put down a few walkers only minutes before, Lydia has herself, Aaron, Jerry, Elijah, Luke and Jules cover themselves in walker guts in order to blend in with the herd and hide. However, the herd has at least one variant walker in it which picks up a knife that Lydia drops. As the group moves with the herd at night, Commonwealth soldiers in two jeeps begin leading it in another direction, forcing the group to follow it.[108] This herd eventually links up with two others that are drawn by Commonwealth soldiers on Pamela's orders, forming one massive herd of thousands that is led towards the Commonwealth in order to trigger another lockdown. Attempting to break free, Luke, Jules and Elijah are separated from the others who take refuge in an abandoned RV while Lydia is bitten and has to undergo an amputation. While Aaron stays behind to take care of Lydia, Jerry reenters the herd in search of the others.[103]

At the Commonwealth's East Gate, a number of the zombies are revealed to be of the climber variant and begin climbing over the walls, attacking and killing Trooper Livits who accidentally opens the gate for them in the process. The herd begins to overrun the Commonwealth, killing a number of soldiers and civilians. Deciding to protect the elite only, Pamela orders a displeased Colonel Vickers to divert the herd into the lower wards while the Commonwealth Army focuses on protecting her home and the Estates, leaving thousands to die. As Daryl attempts to rush a badly wounded Judith to the Commonwealth Hospital for help, his friends, joined by Luke and Jules, struggle to hold the herd off and buy Daryl some time.[103] Daryl manages to get Judith to the hospital where Judith seals them in before walkers can enter. Most of the others manage to escape, but Jules is devoured, and Luke is bitten in the leg, dying after an unsuccessful amputation. After rescuing Coco from the overrun Commonwealth Children's Home, Rosita, Gabriel and Eugene attempt to join them, but get trapped in an ambulance as the herd overruns the hospital. Most of the group manages to escape to a safehouse, but Rosita is fatally bitten on the left shoulder. While Mercer's forces are organizing, they are joined by Aaron and Lydia who manage to use their camouflage to sneak through the herd to their friends.[109]

As night falls, many panicked Commonwealth residents attempt to get into the Estates which Pamela has barricaded. As the Coalition and Commonwealth defectors face off with Pamela's forces, the herd approaches the Estates and Gabriel moves to let the people in. Daryl eventually convinces Vickers and Pamela's forces to stand down and she is placed under arrest by Mercer as the people, including Elijah and Jerry, are let in. Defeated and spotting a zombified Lance amongst the horde, Pamela attempts to commit suicide by allowing Lance to bite her through the gates, but Maggie puts him down. United, the Commonwealth and Coalition forces, knowing that the climbers are too dangerous to just draw away, divert the herd away from the Estates, allowing the soldiers to get a truck out of the Estates to the fuel depot. Planting fuel throughout the Estates and pouring it down the sewers, the united forces use Pamela's records to lure the herd into the abandoned Estates and then blows it up in a massive explosion. The explosion completely destroys the Estates and the entire herd that was overrunning the Commonwealth.[109]

A year later, Daryl drives through a small herd on the road on his motorcycle.[109]

As she searches for Rick, Michonne, clad in makeshift armor and sword drawn, rides a horse at a massive herd.[109]

Fear the Walking Dead[]

While torturing National Guardsman Corporal Andrew Adams, Daniel Salazar learns that the National Guard had locked 2,000 people in the Los Angeles Arena after people started to turn into walkers and chaos ensued. Visiting the arena, Daniel discovers it full of thousands of walkers trying to get out.[110] Daniel subsequently releases the massive herd and uses it to attack the National Guard Camp as a distraction so that Madison's group can rescue their loved ones. The herd overruns the compound as Madison's group escapes, but Elizabeth Ortiz is bitten in the process and is put down by Travis Manawa at her request.[111] This herd is presumably completely destroyed when the U.S. Military bombs Los Angeles with napalm as part of Operation Cobalt.[112]

As Madison's group attempts to escape on The Abigail, a herd attacks, forcing Madison and Travis to fight them off using driftwood and rocks. As Nick evacuates the group in a Zodiac, one walker chases them but is killed when Nick and Chris Manawa drive the Zodiac's running propeller into its head. Madison's group manages to escape to The Abigail and the herd is presumably destroyed during Operation Cobalt.[112]

While searching for supplies on the beach where Flight 462 crashed, Alex arrives chased by a massive herd. Daniel Salazar kills several with a pistol, but quickly runs out of ammunition, forcing Daniel, Alex, Alicia and Chris to arm themselves with makeshift weapons from the plane's wreckage. Though they kill several walkers, the four are cornered until Nick arrives, covered in walker blood from an earlier encounter with two walkers. Nick's attack allows the group to run while Nick realizes that the walker blood effectively makes him invisible to the herd who see Nick as just another walker. Chased closely by the herd, the group manages to escape on the Zodiac to The Abigail.[113]

When Nick and Luis Flores make their way to a boat to reach The Abigail, a herd can be seen on the beach near them, albeit at a slightly higher elevation. The two are able to escape on the boat without being noticed by the herd.[114]

After being poisoned to death by Celia Flores, a priest and his parishioners in the town of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California end up forming a small herd that is encountered by Madison's group. Using their own weapons and the weapons the parishioners were wielding before their deaths, Madison's group is able to put down the entire herd. However, Chris purposefully fails to help Madison when she falls into trouble, something that Alicia notices and later confronts him on.[115]

When Daniel sets the Abigail Hacienda on fire, a herd is drawn to it. Madison, Strand, Alicia and Ofelia escape in a truck although Nick refuses to join them. Having earlier slathered himself in walker guts to search for Travis and Chris, Nick is able to walk through the herd unharmed and escape on his own.[116]

A few days after the destruction of the Hacienda, Nick is attacked by stray dogs while making his way through the desert to Tijuana. A herd appears while Nick is trapped on top of an old van and the dogs attack them instead, leading to the herd devouring the dogs and inadvertently saving Nick's life. However, Nick makes too much noise and the herd is drawn towards him until the sound of a horn and gunshots draws them back towards the highway. Binding his leg with the belt of a maimed walker and covering himself in walker blood, Nick joins the herd, but begins hallucinating them talking to him due to a combination of exhaustion, the heat and dehydration, even seeing Gloria in place of one of the walkers. The herd eventually comes under attack by Gael and two other members of La Mañas, but Gael gets distracted when he spots the obviously human Nick, who he had earlier encountered, amongst the herd resulting in Gael dropping his bullets. Gael is unable to reload quickly enough and he and another member of the gang are devoured by the walkers. Nick continues walking with the herd until he finally collapses and is left behind.[117]

While in the Rosarito Beach Hotel bar, Madison and Strand get drunk and Strand starts banging on the piano while Madison smashes glasses against the wall. The noise draws out a herd trapped in a store across the street as well as causing many of the walkers that were locked in various rooms to throw themselves off of the room balconies. The gathering herd quickly swarms into the hotel, cornering Madison and Strand behind the bar and flooding the stairwells into the upper floors of the tower.[118] Unable to find another way out, Madison and Strand cover themselves in walker blood in a store room behind the bar and are able to walk out through the herd, locking many walkers in the bar behind them. After finding their truck gone, the two manage to enter and barricade themselves in the spa building.[119] At the same time, the trapped Alicia manages to escape to a higher floor where she encounters Elena Reyes, the former hotel manager who had locked the walkers in the rooms in the first place. Working together, they are able to lure the walkers on their floor into one of the rooms while Alicia escapes to an adjacent room's balcony with Elena's help. However, upon reaching the bar, the two women find it blockaded and Elena is forced to turn over the keys to the hotel to save her nephew. Alicia, Hector and Elena manage to escape through a tunnel to the spa building where they are saved by Madison and Strand.[120] With the walkers having moved on enough that the area is relatively safe again, Madison convinces Oscar Diaz to work together to clear the hotel and make it into a safe place. After clearing out some of the undead, Alicia comes up with the idea to use the riptide under the hotel's pier to sweep them out to sea instead. Working together, the group channels the undead from the three different parts of the hotel onto the pier where Madison leads the massive herd to a break in the pier. As Madison jumps and is picked up Alicia and Hector in a Zodiac, the herd follows her through, gets caught in the riptide and is swept out to sea.[119]

At La Colonia, the residents sacrifice themselves to "the wall" when they are dying, a herd of walkers made up of undead residents and their families acting as a barrier to help protect the community from invasion. As a result, scouts for the community cover themselves in walker blood and pass through a bus blocking a hole in the fence to get out.[118] After deciding to flee La Colonia, Francisco passes through the herd by putting one down, pulling it into the bus and covering himself, his wife and his daughter in its blood. The walkers are fooled by the trick and after smelling them briefly, allow the three to pass through unmolested.[121] When the Los Hermanos gang invades La Colonia, they gun down several of the walkers. Once they are inside the compound, the dying Alejandro Nuñez moves the bus and allows the herd to swarm La Colonia. When Madison, Travis and Alicia arrive, the herd has killed the gangsters who have reanimated and become members of the herd themselves. The trio quickly abandons La Colonia after ensuring that Alejandro doesn't reanimate when he dies.[122]

While near the US-Mexico border, Ofelia's truck breaks down and she is attacked by several walkers. After putting them down with a hammer and a knife she takes from one of the walkers, Ofelia spots a small herd of around a dozen walkers coming up the road. Rather than stay and fight them or try to fix her truck, Ofelia abandons the truck and runs off before the herd can reach her.[123]

Angry at the Black Hat Reservation natives being allowed into the Broke Jaw Ranch, Troy Otto uses a grenade launcher to lure a herd into attacking the ranch. While trying to stop his brother, Jake is bitten by a walker and dies despite Troy and Nick's attempts to save him. At the same time, the ranch's militia tries to fend off the herd to no avail. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, the survivors are forced to retreat into the pantry.[124] With the pantry's air vent broken, Alicia Clark mercifully puts down those that were bitten while Ofelia Salazar and Crazy Dog attempt to fix the problem before the survivors suffocate while Nick and a remorseful Troy attempt to rescue the residents. As time runs out, Ofelia and Crazy Dog find and put down a walker clogging the vent system, but too late to save anyone but Alicia from suffocating. The two detonate the ranch's fuel supply, drawing the herd away and allowing Madison, Victor Strand, Qaletaqa Walker, Nick and Troy to rescue Alicia from the reanimated pantry residents.[125] However, it is later revealed that Ofelia was bitten by the walker in the vents and she subsequently dies.[126]

While patching the hole on the Route 185 Bridge, John Dorie and June eliminate a small herd of walkers. Later, another herd accidentally knocks the jeep blocking the hole loose and they fall into the river and are washed up at John's Cabin. Armed with a shovel and an axe, June and John fight off the walkers, aided by the trenches that John had dug in front of the cabin in order to protect it. When June gets cornered, John grabs his pistols and shoots the remaining walkers.[127]

As part of his plan to take the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium, Ennis gathers a massive herd of walkers from the various places where the Vultures have trapped them. At night at the stadium, Ennis ignites a trail of oil in front of the gates and releases the walkers, covered in oil.[128] Under attack, the panicked residents flee despite Madison's belief that the stadium walls will keep the herd out. The herd surrounds and massacres the escaping residents, aside from June who had gone back for medical supplies and ran for it when she thought everyone else dead and found herself too outnumbered. At the same time, Mel escapes with Charlie and Nick, Alicia, Strand and Luciana are trapped outside. Knowing that the stadium walls could be used to keep the herd trapped, Madison lights a flare and leads most of the herd inside, planning to double back through the tunnels and escape. However, too many walkers remain in the parking lot, so Madison seals herself and the majority of the herd inside the stadium and ignites the oil-soaked walkers with her flare, sacrificing herself so that her friends and family can escape.[129] The presence of the herd inside the stadium makes it too dangerous for the Vultures to enter, forcing Ennis and the others to scavenge only what they can from the outside.[128] However, despite Alicia, Nick, Luciana, Strand, Charlie and June believing that all of the stadium residents had died in the attack, most if not all made it out thanks to Madison's sacrifice including Cole, Douglas and Vivian.[130]

A couple of weeks later, after John Dorie is shot in the abdomen by Alicia, June leads Charlie, Al and Morgan Jones back to the stadium for medical supplies. Breaking through the barricaded gate, they find the massive herd of walkers who survived the fire but were left badly charred.[128] Al is able to clear a path for Morgan and June with her SWAT van's guns, allowing them to reach the infirmary and retrieve the much needed supplies. Despite an attack by a vengeful Alicia, Morgan's group manages to escape the stadium and the herd safely. The stadium survivors subsequently explain the story of the stadium's fall to the others.[129]

While searching a lumber yard for a survivor sending notes attached to walkers, Morgan and Alicia find a small herd blocking the door to the room the man is in. The two lure the herd outside and dispatch it by dropping a pile of logs on the walkers. However, they discover that the man has already died and reanimated and they can only put him down.[131]

After Martha tries to kill Morgan's group with the guns of Al's SWAT van, the gunfire attracts a herd to their location. The group flees on foot, chased by the ever-growing herd and finally taking refuge in an abandoned hospital in Austin, Texas. However, the hospital itself proves to be full of walkers while the herd eventually breaks through the doors. The group, aside from Al who separates to activate the hospital generators, are forced to take cover on the roof where they find that Jim Brauer was bitten and there is no way down.[132] With power running out, Morgan comes up with a plan to distract the herd while the others use the freight elevators to get out as they discovered Al did from a note she left them in the generator room. By throwing a dead walker off the hospital roof and triggering a car alarm, Morgan buys enough time for June, Sarah and Wendell to escape while he remains trapped on the roof with a dying Jim. The group eventually returns for Morgan along with Alicia, Strand and John, using a firetruck ladder to get Morgan off the roof. When they make too much noise, the dying Jim sacrifices himself by jumping off the roof and setting off another car alarm, drawing the walkers away and allowing his friends to escape. By the time Martha returns that night to witness Jim's reanimation, the herd is gone.[133]

Al manages to escape the walkers in the hospital through the freight elevator and basement and spends the night in a post office. The next day, she is chased by a herd, possibly the same one that had cornered Morgan's group, but escapes into a parking garage, locking the herd out. After an encounter with Martha and a zombified Jim, Al is eventually rescued from Austin by her friends.[134]

While Morgan's group is at The Flip-Flop Truck Stop, a herd of walkers is drawn in when they kill a single walker with a gunshot, leaving the group trapped inside, severely weakened from Martha's poisoning of them. After learning that they were poisoned with antifreeze, the group makes a plan to get ethanol from a crashed tanker truck outside. As the others clear a path through the herd, Alicia and Sarah attempt to get the ethanol and Al reaches her SWAT van and uses its guns to take down the herd. However, the shots also punch holes in the tanker, spilling all of the needed ethanol. The gunfire attracts more walkers to the truck stop, but Morgan takes them out when he finally arrives to help.[134]

After crashing a plane while trying to help Logan, Alicia, Al, John, June and Luciana inadvertently draw a herd to the crash site. As June tries to free a trapped and badly injured Luciana, Alicia, Al and John hold off the herd using traps and makeshift weapons, including a large propeller blade from the plane. Though they manage to kill many walkers, there prove to be too many. However, after Luciana is freed, Annie arrives in a van, running over two walkers and driving the group and her siblings to safety. When Al later returns to the crash site to investigate a strange walker, the herd is gone.[135] Morgan and Alicia later return with Grace to check that none of the herd was radioactive. Grace is able to confirm that all of the dead walkers were clean.[136]

As Morgan, Alicia and Grace search the crash site, another herd arrives with a radioactive walker amongst their number. Despite Grace's warnings, Alicia faces off with the walkers armed with her sharpened barrel shroud. However, the radioactive walker loses his dosimeter in the mud, making it impossible to tell the walkers apart. Despite the dangers, Alicia gets in close to eliminate the walkers, nearly getting killed by one at one point. Using a Geiger counter, Grace is able to locate the radioactive member of the herd and shoots him while Morgan catches the body in a tarp for safe disposal.[136]

While exploring Camp Cackleberry, John and June discover the aftermath of a battle between the residents and a herd of walkers that the residents won. However, they also find the residents reanimated in the cabins and the burned remains of the herd. Based off of the dosimeters in the ashes, the two realize the herd was more of the radioactive walkers, about half of the total number that was created by a power plant meltdown. The residents burning their bodies released the radiation into the air and made them terminally ill after they believed that they were safe. Grace subsequently takes the remains with her to bury in some caverns near the plant to prevent anyone getting sick from them again.[136] Morgan and Alicia later learn that Max, Annie, Dylan and their friends are the children of the people who died as a result of the fight with the radioactive herd.[137] Annie eventually explains to Alicia that one of the camp's survivors made a mistake on a scavenging run and led the herd back. With more walkers arriving and the walls close to falling, the adults prepared for a fight and sent their children away for their own safety. When Annie returned alone three days later, she found that the adults had won the battle but were left terminally ill as a result.[138]

In the Humbug's Gulch ghost town, the noise of a spinning windmill draws walkers. John notes that the speed indicates a likely dust storm and will draw even more. Soon, a herd forms and though John and June nearly escape undetected during the storm, an attack by Dwight draws their attention, forcing them to hide inside of the Humbug's Gulch club. After the three put aside their differences, they activate the club's automatic piano to distract the walkers while they escape through the roof. Using weapons from the club and an axe, the group is able to fight their way through the walkers that get too close. However, while John and June escape, Dwight splits off to search the couple's van for clues to his missing wife, resulting in Dwight getting surrounded by the remaining walkers. Firing from down the street, John and June take out most of the walkers while Dwight takes out a few with his gun and axe. With Dwight pinned, two walkers left and only a single bullet, John does a trick shot using the last bullet and the axe, taking out the remaining two walkers. The entire herd, described by John as being about three dozen walkers, is taken out in the process.[139]

While Daniel and Charlie try to clear a store of a deadly machine gun trap, Skidmark's antics inadvertently draw a herd of people inside, who fell victim to the trap in the first place, to the windows. This triggers the trap and the gun shoots out the glass in the store letting out the herd. Though Daniel and Charlie escape in Daniel's car, Daniel chooses to lead the herd back to his warehouse to take it out where they have the advantage. Daniel has less than half of what it would take to kill the herd with him, especially since the herd will grow and knows that if its allowed to continue, more people will fall victim to it. After finding out that Sarah breached his perimeter wall while removing Daniel's plane, Daniel sends Charlie back in the car and leads the herd on foot using a music box. Rather than leave Daniel to die, Strand, Charlie, Sarah and Wendell race to Daniel's aid, but the guns in Al's SWAT van fail to fire. Instead, Strand starts the plane's engines, which had been towed to the location by a semi. The noise draws the walkers into the engines, chopping them all to pieces and eliminating the entire herd. However, in the process the plane's engines are damaged beyond repair, preventing its use to save the rest of the group.[137]

After crashing in the radioactive zone, Charlie and Strand become surrounded by walkers, at least two of which are radioactive. The two are left in a quandary as Morgan warns them against killing any walkers due to the risk of becoming contaminated themselves.[138] Strand shoots several walkers that are not contaminated, but he and Charlie avoid killing some of the walkers that show up, at least five of which ultimately have dosimeters. The two are able to barricade themselves behind the fabric of the balloon until Morgan arrives in a radiation suit he found in the car of one of the power plant workers. Morgan safely puts down all of the walkers, including the contaminated ones and Strand and Charlie depart with the propellers as Morgan goes to help Grace.[140]

While Annie's Group are trying to fix their walker blockade that was damaged by Alicia, the walkers break free and begin chasing them. The walkers become a herd that chases the group back to their hideout. To buy the kids time, Alicia attacks the walkers, killing many as the children escape down a rope. However, when Alicia kills one walker, her sharpened barrel shroud gets stuck and she gets splashed with the walker's blood when she pulls it out. To her horror, Alicia discovers that the walker has a dosimeter, making it radioactive and exposing her to a potentially fatal dose of radiation. Recognizing that her plan isn't working, Alicia runs out through the gap she created and leads the herd away so that the kids can make it to the truck stop. Alicia loses the herd long enough to clean her face at a pond and talk with Morgan on the radio. However, the herd catches up again as alarms sound signaling the start of the second meltdown, forcing Alicia to run from them.[140] By the next morning, Alicia manages to link up with Morgan and Grace and decontaminate at Grace's truck. However, the herd catches up to them so the group leads it past the roadblock, planning to use the sirens to draw the herd to the plant. Before the herd can get too far, the sirens stop as the reactor melts down completely and turns back on Morgan, Alicia and Grace. The three are forced to run with the herd chasing them back to the plane where they decide to hold it off so that John and Dwight can return in time. As they are being forced to leave anyway, John and Dwight return and the group flees on the plane, killing a few of the chasing walkers. With some of the herd hanging onto the plane's cargo netting, John and Morgan release the netting and the plane makes it safely into the air, leaving the herd behind.[141]

A herd is drawn to Ben and Tess' house where they trip some of the mines that Ben had left buried to protect the property. John shoots many of them while some more bring down part of the fence, tripping a mine and blowing themselves up. As the surviving walkers make their way through the minefield, John runs out of ammo with only two walkers left. Unwilling to risk them tripping a mine close enough to the house to potentially harm Tess and her son, Morgan races into the minefield in order to put them both down. One of the two remaining walkers trips a mine and blows itself up while Morgan puts the other walker down with his staff, but accidentally steps onto a mine himself that he has to be rescued from.[142]

After their truck breaks down, Daniel and Grace are attacked by a few walkers. However, while they are dispatching the walkers and Daniel is collecting his spilled records, a herd arrives. The two are forced to run and manage to escape the herd, taking cover in an abandoned bar for the night.[143]

After trying to get The Caravan to join her pioneers without success, Virginia draws the attention of a nearby herd to force the Caravan to need her help. The Caravan survivors quickly move their cars to form a blockade and fight off the walkers while trying to cross a collapsing bridge. With the walkers breaking through the blockade, the Caravan is forced to flee across the bridge on foot without finishing patching it. As the walkers come across, the weight of the fuel tanker causes their end of the bridge to break, sending the herd into the water below. However, because Tom stays on the bridge to keep recording, he falls to his death when it collapses.[144]

When the Caravan finally arrives at Humbug's Gulch, they find it surrounded by a massive herd of walkers with no sign of a way in. Out of options, the group is forced to call Virginia for help as a result.[144] The group initially decides to use the herd as a weapon against the Pioneers, but are forced to lead them over white water rapids instead.[145]

When Morgan is shot by Virginia, the gunshot draws a small herd of walkers, causing Virginia to run off and leave Morgan to be consumed.[145] Morgan is rescued by an unknown savior who shoots the walkers just before Morgan passes out, patches Morgan up and takes him to safety.[146] After killing John Dorie, Dakota reveals to Morgan that she had been the one to save him from the herd, believing that he is the only one capable of stopping Virginia.[147]

After finding Morgan, Isaac enlists his help to get medical supplies to his pregnant wife at Valley Town which has a herd blocking the entrance. Due to Morgan's gangrene, he is able to blend in with the walkers, but collapses in pain from his wound, drawing their attention. Isaac shoots one, saving Morgan and drawing the herd towards himself. Rather than continue on, Morgan fights the herd with Isaac and together they manage to kill all of the walkers. Isaac later reveals that he was bitten the first time he'd tried to get past the herd before he'd gone looking for a gun and found Morgan. Isaac eventually succumbs to his bite wound and is prevented from reanimating by Rachel.[146]

When June and Sarah meet up with Malcolm to treat his illness, they are chased by a small herd. Sarah eliminates most of them, leaving six walkers to bang on the doors of their semi as June attempts to perform emergency surgery to save Malcolm's life. Although Sarah tries to leave to deal with the remaining walkers once they're inside, June stops her as she still needs Sarah's help inside of the trailer.[148]

While fleeing from Virginia's Rangers on their way back to Valley Town, Morgan and Dakota run into a herd that they manage to barricade on the bridge near McNeill's Bait & Beer. Some of the walkers wash up at John's Cabin, drawing him to the bridge to check out the source of the walkers. After putting down several walkers outside of the store, John finds Morgan and Dakota inside. John later agrees to help them get past the herd as the bridge is the only way north. After fixing an old truck, Morgan, John and Dakota affix doors and chain link fencing to the front of it. With Dakota driving and Morgan and John covering from the rear of the truck with John's rifle and Morgan's battle axe, the three slowly make their way through the herd. However, as they make their way through, a walker gets caught under one of the wheels and the truck gets stuck and stalls out while trying to get free. As Morgan continues holding off the walkers, John works on the engine, but gets grabbed by a walker. Dakota manages to shoot the walker through the front window and John gets the truck started again. Dakota then floors it and drives into the bridge railing, sending a few of the remaining walkers into the river below with John kicking another off. The last few walkers approach the back of the truck, but are quickly dispatched by Morgan, leaving the herd completely destroyed. As Morgan heads off in search of a better radio signal, John makes his way through the corpses and puts down a few walkers that weren't dead yet. While helping John search for a part that fell out of the truck, Dakota is grabbed by a surviving walker but is able to put it down with a knife, inadvertently revealing her murder of Cameron in the process.[147] Dwight and Sherry later pass the bodies of the walkers while examining the truck.[149]

The Doomsday Cult locates Alicia, Al, Wes and Luciana as they are supposedly cornered by a herd in Dallas, Texas. However, this is a ruse so that the four can infiltrate the cult.[150]

When Wes is reunited with his brother, Derek explains that he was cornered by a herd while on a supply run for condensed milk. Derek, who Wes had believed died in a walker attack, hid in a shed that collapsed on top of him. Derek was eventually rescued by the cult, but by that time, Wes had taken his motorcycle and left, believing that his brother had perished.[150]

While June, Dwight and Sherry are engaged in a gunfight with John Dorie Sr. outside of the ruins of Tank Town, the noise attracts a small herd to their location. Dwight and Sherry deal with the herd while June goes after John who is able to capture her while June's friends are busy dealing with the walkers.[149]

While transporting the body of what is supposedly Ms. Maddox, Teddy's truck hits a spike strip and he, Dakota and Alicia are attacked by a small herd. The three put most of them down and the remainder are put down by Cole who Alicia had believed perished when the stadium was destroyed. Cole explains that the walkers in the area are mainly made up of the victims of a gang of bandits who rob other survivors and leave their victims to reanimate as a warning. Later, as Cole's group prepares to execute Teddy, Alicia and Dakota, the noise of their confrontation draws a larger herd made up of more of the group's victims. The herd kills Douglas, Vivian and 11 other people while Alicia, Teddy, Dakota and Cole successfully manage to put down the walkers attacking them. Grabbing one of the group's guns, Alicia uses a surviving walker as a shield as she confronts Cole, aiming the gun through a hole in the walker's chest and then shoving it into Cole as a distraction. After killing Cole in self-defense, Alicia puts down Douglas and Vivian who had reanimated after being killed by the herd.[130]

While racing to the cult's bunker, Rollie attempts to avoid a small herd, but hits a walker and damages the SWAT van's air breaks. With the herd approaching, Rollie, Wes, Jacob and Luciana hold off the walkers while Sarah repairs the SWAT van. The group is able to successfully eliminate the small herd without any incident.[151]

Will witnesses the Stalkers attacking a small herd near his hideout at night. In the morning, he finds all of the walkers still remaining, but stripped of their clothes. As they approach him, the confused Will draws his knife and puts the herd down.[152]

When the Stalkers attack Will, Strand and three of Strand's Rangers at Will's Hideout, the gunfight draws another larger herd which devours the three Rangers and forces the Stalkers into retreat. As the walkers approach, Strand and Will duck into the van that Will has been living in and hide out there as the herd passes by. After finding boxes revealing that Alicia is at the Franklin Hotel, Strand rushes out of the van past a walker and onto a horse, escaping as the last several walkers in the herd corner Will in the van, forcing him to shut the door. Nevertheless, Will manages to escape from the herd somehow.[152]

When Will exits the lighthouse following a confrontation with Strand, he finds a herd outside and is shocked to recognize them all as members of the Doomsday Cult that were locked in the bunker with Alicia. With the fog obscuring their view, Will activates the lighthouse's beacon to light a path for Strand, but the beacon soon goes out. The two men manage to eliminate all of the walkers, but find no sign of Alicia amongst them.[152]

Upon returning to the Tower, Strand sets up the lighthouse beacon in order to draw a herd to act as a moat against anyone who might try to come after him. Strand throws Will from the Tower, killing him and when Will reanimates, he joins the herd.[152]

While battling the Stalkers outside of Teddy's Secret Bunker, John Dorie Sr. sees a hallucination of several of Teddy's victims before clearing it away and seeing that it is instead a small herd of walkers. Grabbing Dakota's knife from out of her corpse's head, John uses it to put them all down before rescuing June from the last Stalker. After John wakes up at the Tower, June shows him the herd surrounding it as proof that leaving won't be so easy.[153]

After Sarah and Josiah LaRoux crash, a growing herd is drawn to their vehicle. After failing to get Morgan on the radio while calling for help, Sarah and Josiah fight their way outside where they fight off the walkers, joined by Morgan who helps to put down most of them. As Josiah tries to get his revenge upon Morgan, Sarah climbs on top of his vehicle which the remaining walkers surround. Trying to talk Josiah down, Sarah begins putting the surrounding walkers down one by one from where she is perched out of their reach until the last of the herd has been eliminated.[154]

Dwight and Sherry's fight with Eli and his partner draws the attention of a small herd, allowing Eli to escape while Dwight and Sherry are busy putting down the walkers.[155]

During Dwight's later confrontation with Eli, another small herd approaches. Enraged by Eli's murder of the Larson family, Dwight allows the herd to devour him in revenge.[155]

Outside of The Grapple Chapel Wrestling Club, Sherry and Mickey find a herd surrounding it, drawn to the location and kept there by the gym's banging sign. In order to get through the herd, Sherry covers Mickey's protective suit in walker guts which proves to be successful. However, after Mickey discovers that the door is locked, she gets into a struggle with a walker that has a knife sticking out of its hand, causing the herd to turn on her. With the help of covering fire from Sherry, Mickey is able to make her way into the gym followed by Sherry. After a brief attempt to barricade themselves in, the two women head for the wrestling ring, only to encounter and put down Mickey's reanimated husband Cliff. Surrounded, the two are joined by Dwight and the Dark Horses use a combination of guns, knives, chairs, sharp objects and wrestling moves to eliminate the entire herd. After the fight, Sherry puts down a final disabled walker in the corner of the ring, leaving the gym completely clear of walkers.[155]

Morgan and Alicia, covered in walker guts for protection, attempt to follow the zombified Senator Elias Vasquez to PADRE. During a confrontation between the two and Strand's Rangers, the gunfire draws a small herd which Vazquez wanders into. With the Rangers firing at the walkers, Alicia risks her life to grab Vazquez and drag him away as she needs him to find PADRE. The two eventually throw Vazquez over a cliff into water and follow him in order to get away from Strand and his men.[156]

Rather than leading Morgan and Alicia to PADRE, Vazquez is eventually lured into the walker moat at the Tower by Strand's lighthouse beacon. As more walkers approach to join the herd, Morgan puts them down. While Alicia considers Strand's offer to join him, she and Morgan spot Will nearby who had gotten separated from the herd around the Tower and ended up further away in the parking lot. Alicia recognizes Will and puts him down with Strand's murder of Will leading Alicia to declare war on him.[156]

Arno and his men capture a small herd of walkers made up of reanimated cultists. As Arno attempts to feed Alicia to the trapped walkers, Paul rescues her, causing the walkers to get out and devour two of the Stalkers, forcing Arno to flee.[157]

In an attempt to defeat Arno and his forces that are chasing Alicia, Paul blasts loud music from his stereo, drawing a small herd to his house that devours most of the Stalkers outside. The herd gets inside, forcing both sides to fight the walkers as well as each other. After the stereo shorts out under the strain, Arno is able to eliminate all of the remaining walkers.[157]

While passing one of the blast craters from the nuclear destruction, Arno and Sage discover it to be filled with numerous walkers. Arno guesses that the herd must've fallen in and been stewing there for months. Arno warns Sage that there are too many walkers and that if one gets out, "none of us are going anywhere." The discovery renews Arno's determination to take Strand's Tower for the Stalkers.[157] A dying Arno later reveals the threat to Luciana, Daniel and Wes and tells them that somebody is letting the walkers out, walkers that are so dangerous that you can't even get close to them let alone touch them.[158]

After becoming terminally ill with radiation sickness, Garcia throws himself off of the Tower in order to join the walker moat protecting it.[159]

Charlie and Ali are sent to a radioactive building full of walkers, at least most of whom are survivors who had died and reanimated from the radiation permeating Texas, to get a needed elevator part for the Tower. Quickly deducing that most of the herd are likely on the lower floors, Charlie sneaks in through the upper levels while Ali remains outside and is captured by five Stalkers who demand that he let them into the building so that they can capture Charlie. Knowing what's behind the door, Ali quickly moves out of the way and the Stalkers are devoured by the herd despite their best efforts to fight back. Moving into the building, Ali shoots a number of walkers, but Ali hesitates after seeing one that reminds him of his own father. Charlie saves Ali and puts the walker down before revealing that she has put several of the others down and locked the rest behind a door. However, Charlie had lost her gas mask to one of the walkers in the process. After Charlie gets the part, Ali locks her in the elevator and flees as the rest of the herd breaks free and goes after her. However, Ali ultimately changes his mind and shoots the remaining walkers, putting them all down and rescuing Charlie.[159]

As a punishment for Ali's betrayal, Howard throws him off of the Tower's roof to die and join the Tower's walker moat.[159]

Dwight discovers a weapon's cache surrounded by a herd of around a hundred walkers or so. With the help of Morgan, Sherry and Sarah, it's successfully cleared out and the weapons retrieved.[158]

A herd surrounds the area of Manny's Salvage Yard where the Stalkers live with Arno explaining that the walls had failed to keep them out so they had let them in to act as a moat instead like at the Tower while the Stalkers live off of the ground in the boats. Arno threatens to feed Wes to the herd if he, Daniel and Luciana don't give him information on the weapon's cache, revealing that he'd used this method of torture on other people before. Daniel, believing Ofelia to be in one of the boats, makes a deal with Arno instead, but gives him a false location. During this time, a radioactive walker from the Crater wanders in and is put down by Sabrina. With more walkers building up at the east gate, Arno sends her to draw them off and then to remove the radioactive walker's dead body. After discovering Arno's manipulation of him, an enraged Daniel throws Arno into his own cage and lowers him into the herd where his legs are partially devoured before Wes and Luciana pull Arno back out again. Near death, Arno reveals the threat of the walkers in the Crater and that someone is letting them out before he dies of his injuries. After Arno's death, the Stalkers abandon the salvage yard in favor of joining Morgan's group at the sub, leaving the salvage yard overrun by the herd.[158]

During a storm, a number of walkers make it into the tunnels beneath the Tower, ultimately trapping John and June. They are eventually rescued by Strand after Howard intercepts June's distress call to Grace.[160]

As a punishment for Howard's failure and supposed betrayal, Strand forces John to throw Howard off of the Tower's roof to his death where he eventually reanimates and joins the herd surrounding the Tower.[160]

The next day, John decides to don a makeshift suit of armor made from Howard's collection of artifacts and carry baby Mo through it to Morgan. Although Wendell suggests that John cover himself in walker guts, John tells him that they don't have time and that it's too dangerous for Mo. John successfully carries the baby through the thousands of walkers to Morgan, but he is bitten on the left shoulder in the process. Already dying from radiation sickness, John allows the herd to devour him as a distraction while Morgan gets away with Mo.[160]

A small herd of six walkers encircles Maya Vazquez as she tries to flee. However, Dwight arrives and shoots five of the walkers before running out of bullets with just one left, a radioactive walker that approaches Maya. Just before it can reach her, Sherry arrives and shoots it.[161]

The entire walker moat ends up following Morgan away from the Tower and he takes the opportunity to get rid of them for good which will render the Tower vulnerable until at least nightfall when Strand can draw in more walkers using his lighthouse beacon. While chasing Morgan, the herd devours three of Strand's Rangers that attack him, Dwight and Sherry before Morgan draws them back after him. With the help of Alicia, Morgan leads the herd to the Crater, only to discover the Crater nearly empty, someone having lowered a ramp into it, letting out the countless walkers trapped within. Instead, Dwight and Sherry decide to trap the herd in the Franklin Hotel's bunker, activating the fire alarm while Morgan and Alicia help to draw the herd in from the outside. The herd devours six of Strand's Rangers, but Wes manages to escape with his life while Dwight and Sherry manage to escape by crawling out through the bunker's drainage pipes. While waiting for Dwight and Sherry to emerge, Alicia encounters the zombified Vazquez again who has gotten separated from the main herd. Rather than trying to recapture the Senator and use him to resume her search for PADRE, Alicia puts Vazquez down for good.[161]

Near The Birdhouse in Louisiana, a small herd emerges from the trees and surrounds Madison. However, she quickly takes them all down with her hammer.[162]

While Morgan, Madison and Ava Sanderson are hiding in the Sanderson Family crypt, a herd of at least 30 walkers gathers outside, trying to get in and trapping the three. After Wilt's Posse finds the group, they shoot all of the walkers and put down the herd.[162]

While Madison's buried on the beach to drown as the tide comes in, a herd emerges from the water made up of Wilt, Ava and six members of Wilt's Posse. Morgan puts down Wilt and three others, but he hesitates when he realizes that Ava is a part of the herd. As the other three walkers approach where she's buried, Madison manages to grab her hammer and break their legs before putting them all down. Freeing herself, Madison puts down Ava as Morgan struggles to keep her off of him.[162]

After escaping from PADRE with Mo, Morgan settles in a houseboat in a Georgia swamp that is overrun by a herd of walkers that got trapped in the swamp after making their way into it. Eventually, the herd attacks the houseboat and starts pulling it under. Unable to kill all of the attacking walkers, Morgan calls PADRE for help and they rescue Mo before leaving Morgan behind to fend off the herd by himself. Morgan kills as many walkers as he can before PADRE returns and rescues Morgan too.[163] Morgan later reveals to Mo that, when they initially got surrounded by walkers, he lost control of himself, saw red and the next thing he knew, Morgan's hands were covered in blood and he was standing over Mo. This was what frightened Morgan enough to call PADRE to take Mo away from him.[164]

Seven years later, following Madison's escape from PADRE with Mo, they encounter a small herd in the marsh where they land. Madison puts down two of the walkers with her sledgehammer while Morgan puts down another one with his new staff after joining them. Morgan leads Madison and Mo to Pip's Pavilion of Wonder, revealing that he now works for PADRE. During the confrontation that follows, the group is forced into the swamp where Morgan had lost Mo by an approaching herd.[163]

Morgan, Madison and Mo make their way through the overrun swamp, at first unnoticed until PADRE shoots a flare into the air in an attempt to force them to a nearby airstrip. The flare draws the herd trapped in the swamp, causing Morgan to lead Madison and Mo to his old houseboat which is surrounded by walkers half-buried in the water. The herd follows them to the houseboat with more being drawn in by Mo's failed attempt to shoot Madison dead. Climbing onto the houseboat, the herd starts pulling it under water, forcing Morgan to reveal what had happened there seven years ago. Morgan and Mo make their way out of the side of the houseboat with fewer walkers while Madison, too weak to fight the herd, remains behind to draw their attention. However, Mo's foot gets stuck while crossing the swamp and Morgan puts down a number of the approaching walkers as Mo struggles to free herself. Despite Morgan's best efforts, the two quickly become surrounded by the herd, but Madison draws their attention by banging her sledgehammer against the side of the houseboat. Morgan puts down the walkers that get too close to him and Mo and frees his daughter, but Madison gets swarmed by the walkers that she drew away with Morgan and Mo being unable to help her. As Madison is about to be devoured, Grace arrives in a boat and shoots all of the walkers attacking Madison and two more that try to get onto her boat. Morgan, Madison and Mo escape on Grace's boat before the rest of the herd can close in on them.[163]

A nearby herd is drawn to the Coastal Railroad Museum by the gunshot from Adrian's struggle with Dwight. The herd surrounds the train, forcing Dwight and Sherry to climb over the roof in order to reach an emergency override at the back of the train to restore power. The herd is presumably later either drawn off or eliminated by Shrike's forces when they arrive.[165]

In a flashback, a herd overruns the PADRE Shipyard, killing Major General Krennick and all of the PADRE adults. Sam "Shrike" Krennick and her brother Ben barely escape with their lives while Krennick and his men reanimate and become a part of the herd. The two later flood the shipyard with thousands of walkers in order to protect the supplies within from other survivors.[166]

In the present, 12 years later, Shrike visits the still-overrun shipyard and tells Ben that it's time to clear it out and begin their expansion using the supplies. When Ben points out the thousands of walkers still occupying the shipyard, Shrike reveals that she intends to use the children that they've trained to clear the herd out.[166] Shrike later reveals that the herd needs to be cleared out by hand because it's too dangerous to use guns with all of the fertilizer and munitions stored in the containers which could be detonated by a stray bullet, destroying all of the supplies.[167]

In the years since Morgan abandoned King County, the town has been partially reclaimed by nature and it has been overrun by small herds since Morgan is no longer clearing them out.[168]

After returning to King County, Morgan encounters a small herd eating two skunks. When Morgan can't enter the house where his son died, he angrily attacks the herd, effortlessly dispatching all of the walkers. However, putting down walkers that had been eating skunks causes Morgan to start smelling of skunk himself.[168]

With more walkers closing in, Morgan leads Grace and Mo to the Drake Family Home where they take shelter with Morgan planning to let the herd eventually move on. In addition, the herd helps to keep the PADRE forces outside at bay. However, Dwight, Sherry, Oriole and the woman with them use flares to draw in more walkers, telling Morgan that the house won't hold when every walker in 10 miles goes after it. They also start threatening to use burning walkers to set the house on fire. The three begin fighting their way out with Morgan using the gun that Rick Grimes had given him over a decade earlier. However, Morgan's hallucination of a walker as his wife Jenny causes Morgan and Grace to get caught while Mo hides inside the house as walkers surround it. When Morgan returns to the house, the flares have inadvertently set it on fire. Morgan shoots a few of the walkers surrounding it, but he begins hallucinating them all as a zombified Jenny. Fighting through his hallucinations, Morgan finishes off the remaining walkers and rescues Mo after finally putting his son down. The next morning, a surviving walker emerges from the wreckage of the house and bites Grace before Morgan is able to put it down.[168] When Shrike subsequently visits King County, she finds the remains of the walkers that Morgan had put down and she is impressed with his skill.[167]

After Mo boards the train car in the hopes of curing Grace of her bite, Hawk and the other Prefects use flares to draw a small herd out of the woods to surround the train car, preventing Mo from leaving. When Morgan arrives, he quickly dispatches the herd with his staff and gets inside just in time to save Mo from a zombified Grace.[167]

After trapping a weaponless Morgan in the train car, Shrike has her Prefects summon another herd with flares to surround it and trap him.[167] By the time that Madison arrives to help Morgan that night, he has descended into one of his crazed frenzies, somehow escaped from the train car, retrieved his axe and slaughtered all of the walkers.[164]

Under Shrike's direction, Mo, Dove, Hawk and the Prefects release the massive herd from the shipyard. Although they manage to put down a number of walkers, the sheer numbers overwhelm the Prefects, forcing them to retreat into the swamps, likely trying to slow down the massive herd that's following them. By the time that Morgan and Madison arrive, the shipyard is abandoned aside from a number of dead bodies and a small number of walkers that remain, including Anderson. Mistaking one of the walkers for his daughter, Morgan descends into another crazed state and slaughters them all, attacking Madison before she subdues him with the help of Daniel's Resistance. Aware of the Prefects' movements, the adults follow their kids into the swamp, facing and dispatching the tail end of the herd outside with melee weapons and suffering no apparent casualties despite the massive number of walkers that they face. However, after descending into another frenzy, Morgan gets separated from the rest. Mo leads the Prefects to Morgan's houseboat for safety, but Shrike redirects the herd towards them, having realized that the coordinates that she needs are a zombified Krennick. The Prefects put down a large number of walkers, but they are forced to split up after they start to get overwhelmed with no sign of Krennick. When Morgan arrives, he inadvertently attacks Mo who non-fatally stabs him, causing Morgan to pass out from blood loss. Mo takes them into the houseboat which quickly begins sinking again and becomes surrounded by walkers. As the walkers attempt to break in, Mo attempts to hold them off single-handedly by moving around the houseboat and stabbing them before Morgan eventually helps her to escape using Madison's old oxygen tank to swim under the herd. Madison eventually rescues Morgan as Krennick joins the walkers at the houseboat. While Shrike is preparing to kill the two, Krennick emerges from the swamp and bites his daughter when she collapses to her knees in grief and remorse rather than shooting him. Madison puts Krennick down and retrieves the coordinates from his binoculars, leaving the remaining walkers of the herd trapped in the swamp where they can't get back out.[164]

A small herd that is covered in vines with mushrooms growing out of them attacks Strand and Frank near Strand's old raft. Frank dispatches three of the walkers, but Frank is surprised by a fourth while he is arguing with Strand. Retrieving his old sword from the raft, Strand dispatches the walker, and the two men quickly leave as more walkers approach.[169]

A herd is drawn by the confrontation between Madison, Strand, Russell and his people near the Wymberley Jones De Renne Georgia Library. Taking advantage of the distraction, Madison and Strand flee back to the library only to have more emerge from around the building. Unable to seal the door, Madison and Strand create a barricade out of bookshelves and Madison shoots a few of the walkers before she runs out of ammo while Strand's sword gets stuck in the chest of one that he tries to dispatch as it pushes against the barricade, leaving the two unarmed. Several of the zombies prove to climbers who crawl on top of and over the bookshelves to get at their prey while the rest try to get around or through it. Finally, before the herd can reach Madison and Strand, Russell and his men arrive, and one guns down the herd with a machine gun. Russell takes Strand's sword from the corpse of the walker and keeps it for himself as he captures Madison and Strand.[169]

A small herd is drawn to Lowcountry Landing by the arrival of Madison, Strand, Daniel, Hawk and a few others in search of fuel. The group takes cover inside of the gas station while the herd surrounds the outside. Madison notices that one walker is missing her left arm and thinks that it could be a zombified Alicia and draws it closer by banging on the glass. However, this just riles up the herd and they break through the glass. Strand stabs the walker with the missing arm in the head when it lands on Madison, but before the group can take care of the rest of the walkers, the herd is shot down from behind by the Gearheads. A lone walker survives and attempts to attack Madison, but it is quickly grabbed and shot in the head by Luciana. The Gearheads subsequently clear out the walker bodies and the mess that they had made while the walker proves not to be Alicia.[170]

As Madison vents her grief and anger over the death of her kids out on a tractor on a nearby beach, a small herd is drawn in by the noise. Madison uses the walkers as targets for her anger, quickly putting them down with her sledgehammer, decapitating two and smashing the head of a third one in her fury.[170]

A herd is drawn to the Emissary Suites hotel by the explosion of Charlie's tanker truck and the fire that it starts. Many of the walkers are ones that Troy had cut the arms off of and subsequently had his men release to make Madison think that she was seeing a zombified Alicia everywhere. Troy and his men are forced to fight the herd while trying to get the fire put out and find the missing Tracy Otto. As Troy's men are overwhelmed, Madison saves Troy from one of the walkers, not wanting another kid to die, but she turns on him after realizing that Troy was responsible for the armless walkers that have been confusing her. Madison and her people leave as Troy's group continues to fight the herd and search for Tracy.[170] It's subsequently heavily implied that Troy and his men had succeeded in eliminating the herd and securing the hotel.[171]

A herd is drawn to the confrontation outside of Dwight's House between Dwight, Sherry, June, Dove and Marty's Group. As the bandits fight off the walkers, Dwight's group quickly makes their escape.[172]

A large herd is drawn to the Sanctuary by the gunfight between Dwight, Sherry and a member of Marty's group. With the perimeter fence broken, the herd is able to attack the dilapidated and unstable building with the metal-covered fence walkers breaking free and joining the walkers that were drawn in from the outside. Needing to clear the walkers away from the building so that June can operate on Dove, Dwight volunteers to go by himself, retrieving ammo from a hiding place in his old room. However, believing that PADRE needs Dwight more, Sherry takes his ammo to fight the walkers alone while she locks Dwight in his room. Sherry shoots at the walkers, although she has some trouble at first with the ones with metal covering their heads until Sherry aims for the eyes, and she attempts to keep the herd away from the building as its weakening walls begin to give way under the walkers. However, while Sherry's distracted targeting the walkers near the building, several walkers cause a section of the fence to fall on Sherry, trapping her underneath. Realizing that Sherry is in trouble, June releases Dwight who dispatches the walkers trapping Sherry with a Fire Axe. Dwight and Sherry fight the herd, which comes at them from multiple directions, back-to-back, trying to keep them away from the building. Although successful to a degree, the fight is interrupted by the arrival of the bandits, forcing Dwight and Sherry to flee inside. No longer held back by the couple, the herd breaks through the Sanctuary's outer walls, causing the building to begin to collapse as the walkers trap Dwight, Sherry, June and Dove in the Sanctuary's main room. Marty's group falls victim to the herd and the collapsing celling as Dwight's group takes cover in Negan's old furnace which protects them from both the collapsing building and the walkers. The destruction of the Sanctuary crushes all of the walkers with falling debris aside from the zombified Phil and Marty who have been impaled on a fallen beam and pinned to the floor together.[172]

After leaving PADRE, Madison uses a boombox and loud music to draw in a herd of over a dozen walkers in an attempt to find a zombified Alicia. Madison quickly and easily dispatches the walkers with her sledgehammer.[171]

After being thrown out of a truck by Daniel, the unarmed Strand becomes surrounded by an increasingly large herd coming from all directions that he is unable to avoid, becoming surrounded by more and more walkers as he tries to escape. As one of the walkers takes Strand to the ground, Ada, Della and Sara arrive in the SWAT van and gun down most of the herd. Ada stabs the walker that Strand is struggling with, and they escape in the SWAT van before the remaining walkers can catch up.[171]

Tracy leads Madison and Daniel to a swamp where a massive herd is frozen to the ground in the mud, claiming that Alicia is a part of the herd. Tracy claims that the herd was following them while they were traveling to the area and that Troy didn't want it to get near the hotel so, when the temperatures started dropping, Troy knew that the mud would freeze them here in the swamp. Madison and Daniel realize from the attire of the walkers that the herd had come all of the way from Texas and Daniel deduces that something is wrong, but Madison insists upon pressing forward anyways. Tracy leads them to a walker that she claims is Alicia who is missing her left arm, but Madison discovers that it's not after moving the walker's hair out of her face. Tracy shoves Madison into the walker, breaking the walker's frozen legs off, but she is unharmed. Tracy reveals that the walker is actually her mother Serena whose death she blames on Madison and Alicia. As a result, Tracy had wanted her zombified mother to kill Madison. Believing that Tracy is too big of a danger to PADRE, Madison tries to kill her by tying Tracy to a tree and pushing a walker at her, but she is stopped by the arrival of Strand, Ada, Della and Sara. As walkers begin breaking free of the frozen ground, Tracy manages to escape, and Madison's group flees. Madison and Daniel subsequently realize that Troy intends to use the herd as his army to attack PADRE, the exact same way that he'd destroyed Broke Jaw Ranch.[171]

Following the departure of the Endlings, the Campus Colony is destroyed, apparently overrun by a massive herd with the help of the Civic Republic Military. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Kublek, most if not all of the walkers are put down after the attack by the CRM soldiers.[173] It's later revealed that a few days earlier, the same massive herd was used by the CRM to overrun Omaha, Nebraska, led to Omaha by CRM helicopters before the CRM blew down the walls with C4 to let it in.[174] Dr. Leo Bennett subsequently discovers that the herd attack was actually a cover for the CRM using a variant of chlorine gas to destroy the two settlements.[175] While describing the herd that destroyed Omaha to Hope Bennett, Elizabeth states the herd was unimaginably large, bigger than anything that they had ever seen before and then it had linked up with a second herd of a similar size before hitting the Campus Colony. According to Elizabeth, the herd was over 100,000 walkers total by the time that it destroyed the Campus Colony. Before it reached Omaha, the herd stretched across the entire horizon and was clearly many thousands of walkers strong. Elizabeth claims that the CRM managed to save a few people from the destruction and airlifted them to Portland.[174]

When the Endlings reach the Blaze of Gory, they discover that a massive herd is amongst the smoke at the bus depot. However, after checking out their map, Iris determines that the airfield's fence on the other side will have kept the walkers from coming in to the east and so all they have to do is head due east through the Blaze. At dawn, the group sneaks through the smoke, but quickly get lost and surrounded by the herd. Spotting the fence nearby, the group rushes to it, knocking over several walkers along the way and blocking the fence behind them. However, on the other side of the fence is the burning tire junkyard and even more walkers. Elton suggests that someone use the Blaze's old tornado siren to draw the herd away as bait, but the Endlings can't come to a consensus. That night, Hope takes a radio and departs alone into the Blaze.[176]

Hope is able to reach an office in the front of the factory and contacts the others to get there while she uses the siren to clear a path to the exit. With the fires to either side distracting most of the walkers, Elton, Iris and Silas are able to make it to the office, although walkers soon start gathering outside. After the group is joined by Felix and Huck, Hope manages to get the siren working, drawing the attention of most of the walkers, allowing the rest of the group to run through the Blaze of Gory, Felix and Huck taking out several that get in their way. As Hope follows, she ignites a trail of melted rubber behind her that several walkers fall into. Near the exit, two walkers attack Hope, but together she and Iris manage to put them down. Shortly thereafter, a falling stack of tires caused by Huck knocking a walker into it blocks the path of the rest of the herd, allowing the Endlings to escape.[177]

A plasma strike disturbs a herd of a couple of dozen walkers that were previously just milling about in Daiquiritown. The herd follows Iris and Felix back to the riverbank where the Endlings are working on finishing their boat. Felix uses Elton's Fisherman to string up a makeshift net between two trees as the herd arrives, holding them back for a few more minutes. Eventually, walkers make it around the two trees, but Iris, Hope and Huck briefly join Felix in holding them off. After Elton succeeds in fixing the boat, the Endlings quickly launch it with the herd closing in on them. The Endlings escape across the Mississippi River to Illinois as the herd continues trying to follow them, eventually walking straight into the water.[178]

As the Endlings struggle to rescue the trapped Iris in Andersonville, a small herd approaches them. Before it can attack, Tony Delmado races to their rescue in his and Percy's truck, running over several walkers in the proccess. The Endlings climb into the truck as the herd closes in and Tony drives off, running over the head of a fallen walker as he flees the herd.[179]

While returning from her scouting mission, Huck hides from a small herd of about half a dozen walkers passing over a bridge. Spotting Dawson at the rear of the herd, she manages to separate him out and put him down.[180]

While traveling down a foggy road, the Endlings encounter a herd caught in barbed wire. Surrounded on all sides, they are forced to fight their way out with Felix suffering a cut to the back of his leg in the process. However, Felix manages to clear a path and they are able to escape.[181]

A small herd of four walkers chases Elton and the injured and unconscious Percy through a field. After briefly considering abandoning Percy to die, Elton decides to stand his ground against the herd, kicking one to the ground, tying two up with his fisherman and putting the last one down with Silas' Wrench.[181]

While Hope and Huck are arguing, a herd emerges from the woods on either side of them. Due to having learned that Huck is a CRM agent, Hope hesitates to allow Huck to rearm herself with her S-Pole and tries to shoot one of the walkers, but only succeeds in blowing its jaw off. Finally, as Huck grabs her S-Pole and fights against the herd, Hope drops her gun and grabs her own S-Pole. Fighting back-to-back, the two manage to eliminate the entire herd using their S-Poles.[182]

Elizabeth Kublek tells Hope that ten years into the outbreak, herds roam the continent and, as far as the CRM can tell, the entire world. Elizabeth claims that the herds are now so big that they just break through anything, just run through whole cities.[174]

After Will Campbell and Romano manage to overpower and kill a squad of CRM soldiers sent to kill them, the soldiers' corpses are fed upon by a herd.[174]

As Hope tries to make her way out of the ruins of Albany, she encounters a small herd in an abandoned high school and flees. Later, another, larger, herd chases Hope through the streets and corners her in a building. Due to her concussion, Hope hallucinates an insane Candice Froder being devoured by the herd. While Candice proves to be a figment of her imagination, the herd is not. Finally, realizing that she can't make it on her own, Hope calls Elizabeth Kublek for help. Elizabeth sends two CRM soldiers who put down the walkers and rescue Hope.[174]

After Iris kills a CRM soldier, a small herd of three walkers attacks her and Felix. Hiding from more patrolling CRM soldiers, the two are forced to quietly eliminate the walkers in order to avoid drawing attention from the CRM.[183]

When Silas arrives at Civic Republic Cull Facility 1, he discovers Webb, Grady and Tiga cleaning up the remains of a herd that they had lured into the facility using lights and music and then blew up with C4. Given a kill stick by Dennis Graham, Silas joins the others in putting down the surviving walkers and removing their bodies. Grady tells Silas that they lure in herds a few times a week and eliminate them before carting their remains off-site in trucks. Dennis explains to Silas that his facility and six other larger ones are working to clear the undead from New York and reclaim the state.[183]

In order to cover up Iris' murder of the CRM soldier, Iris, Felix and Will travel to a location where a herd is gathered in and around a river, searching for a walker suitable to dress up as Will and putting down a few that get too close to them. Just before they leave to search elsewhere, a suitable walker shows up and the three capture it. Iris and Felix later return to the spot and eliminate the herd together to let out their aggression in lieu of being able to strike at the CRM for the time being.[183]

As Elton and Percy flee from Dev and Asha, a herd emerges from the woods. Elton and Percy use the chance to circle back and steal the siblings' horse while Dev and Asha dispatch the walkers. However, Elton and Percy encounter more walkers that are buried in leaves and are nearly eaten before Dev and Asha rescue them. Working together, Dev, Asha, Percy and Elton manage to put down all of the walkers. After the fight, Asha removes the walkers' eyes and replaces them with flowers before she and Dev pray over the bodies.[184]

At night, Silas, Dennis, Webb, Grady and Tiga draw a massive herd to the culling facility with bright lights, loud music and fireworks where they are blown up by C4 planted in the ground as they cross the yard. As Silas watches from behind a gate, Webb, Grady and Tiga move in, clearing a path to and capturing a CRM test subject that is a part of the herd. Amongst the other walkers in the herd is two fused together, one with its lower half gone. While capturing the test subject, Webb puts these two down with his kill stick after a moment of hesitation at the strange sight. On Dennis' order, Silas helps him to open the gate and let the others in with the walker, closing it behind them. Dennis orders Grady to put the walker in the cage while Webb and Tiga are to put down the strays.[185]

In The Parade, Webb, Grady and Tiga set up a small herd of walkers for training purposes, chaining them up, removing their teeth and leaving their mouths forced permanently open. After being caught trying to escape the facility, Silas is taken to the Parade where he puts down nine or ten of these walkers in just under two minutes before discovering the truth.[103]

Seeking out Silas' help for a plan to break Hope and Leo out of the research facility, Iris, Elton, Percy, Felix and Will fight their way through a herd being drawn to the culling facility by Dennis' music. Seeing a number of walkers trapped in a creek bed, Felix and Will stay back to lure as much of the herd into the creek bed as they can while the others continue on. Silas later uses the excuse of clearing the walkers out of the creek bed to borrow Dennis' box truck for the escape plan.[186]

While out on a research expedition, a small herd that the CRM had been tracking dips south a little too close for comfort to Leo's research team. Will, Romano and CRM soldiers led by Corporal Diane Pierce take out a few walkers that get too close to the research team and Diane has the team wait it out in their current location until the CRM's disruption charges can turn the herd around. Worried that the charges could attract more walkers from the south, Will and Romano leave to scout it out.[187]

While on their way to the Perimeter, Silas and Dennis encounter a herd of hundreds of walkers and are forced to take cover until it passes them by.[188]

As a distraction for their plan to take down the Civic Republic Research Facility, Silas draws a herd to the culling facility using Dennis' music which Silas and Elton then use firecrackers to lead towards the research facility, drawing more walkers out of the woods along the way. Once they're a mile away, Silas and Elton peel off and leave the herd to travel the rest of the way on its own. The herd, which is stated to number at least a thousand walkers, approaches from the west, aided by the fact that the patrols that would normally spot it died when the Endlings blew up the old mining tunnels below the facility. The herd quickly overwhelms the CRM's defenses, forcing them to pull back and call for reinforcements. The research facility is overrun with the walkers killing at least Webb as he tries to get at Elton and Silas in the medical storage room. With walkers between them and their jeep, Elton and Silas climb into the globe sculpture that the Perimeter had built and roll it through the herd, killing a number of walkers and allowing them to escape. As the rest of the group makes their own escape as the research facility is overrun, Jadis confronts them and walkers get close enough that Felix has to turn and shoot them, giving Mason Beale the chance to escape and Jadis the chance to attack. In the midst of the Endlings' escape, a number of walkers corner Mason and Jadis rushes to his rescue, putting them down while Huck shoots a few that gets too close to Mason before she runs out of bullets and makes her own escape. With the facility overrun by the herd, Jadis and her surviving forces retreat to the CRM basecamp where Jadis contacts Major General Beale for reinforcements to retake it.[189] Corporal Diane Pierce later reports to Jadis that they have managed to clear a path to the helicopters and they can have them in the air dropping disruption charges on the herd within the hour.[190]

In order to reach the culling facility, Hope, Iris, Elton and Silas are forced to fight through a number of walkers, but they succeed in getting through the herd safely.[190]

While fighting with Frank Newton, Felix breaks open a gate holding back a herd and combines two S-Poles together to make it a more even fight between the two men. In the midst of fighting each other, Felix and Frank are also forced to fight and put down a number of walkers. Finally, Felix disembowels Frank and leaves him to be devoured by the herd.[190]

Attempting to reach minimum safe distance for the destruction of the chlorine gas, Hope, Iris and Elton are forced to fight another herd which slows them down. Although they manage to put down many walkers, a second larger group approaches from the direction that they need to go in. However, Asha and Indira arrive in a CRM jeep and Indira uses the mounted machine gun to gun down the herd. As the three race to the jeep, more walkers come from down the road and one emerges from the woods and bites Elton in the arm, forcing it to be amputated in order to save his life.[190]

At night, a small herd attacks Joe and his dog Gilligan. Although they are mostly held back by Joe's traps, they are able to devour Gilligan before Joe can put them all down.[191]

While Evie and Joe are traveling together, a herd attacks them. Joe convinces Evie to arm him and together they manage to put down all of the walkers.[191]

Joe is chased by a herd near Sandra's bunker before Sandra finally lets him in. The herd eventually wanders off after Joe enters the bunker.[191]

During the beginning of the outbreak, while traveling across a highway overpass, Blair Crawford and Gina spot a herd chasing the people attempting to escape a herd on the highway below. Having previously stolen a gasoline tanker, the two women dump fuel on the roadway and cars below and light it on fire. The herd walks into the flames and is destroyed, saving the fleeing survivors. However, the fire also causes Blair and Gina's tanker to explode.[192]

While fleeing the conflict on the steamboat, Dee and Lydia encounter a herd on shore. Dee manages to put down a few walkers, but her knife gets stuck in the head of one and she becomes pinned down. With more walkers showing up and attacking the steamboat survivors who have managed to make it to shore, Dee cuts open the corpse of the walker pinning her down and covers herself in its blood. Dee then pulls Lydia under the corpse along with her and smears her daughter's face in walker blood. The herd devours all of the other survivors before moving on, completely ignoring Dee and Lydia.[193]

A large herd lives in the Dead Sector where it's studied by Dr. Chauncey Everett who uses a jacket made out of walker skin as camouflage. Part of the herd is Everett's former colleague Dr. Moseley who, before dying of cancer, had made Everett promise to let him turn and study him. Amy gets chased by the herd, but is rescued by Everett after she puts Specimen 21 in danger. The herd chases Amy to the Dead Sector Ranger Station which she manages to climb before the herd can get her. Although the herd surrounds the station that night, by the next morning, it has moved on. Later, Everett reveals to Amy that her settlement is in the path of the herd's migration route. Amy rushes back to warn her people, but they ultimately fall prey to the herd. The next day, Everett finds Amy, Hannah and the other members of her group now part of the herd and he starts tagging them as more of his test subjects.[194]

Dead City[]

A gigantic horde of a million walkers has inhabited Manhattan, forcing the survivors to live above the tenth floor of buildings and transport via zip lines.[195]

While observing Manhattan from across the Hudson River, Maggie Rhee has to hide from a small passing herd. A straggler sneaks up on Maggie and attacks her, but she bashes its head in in a rage with large monocular. She also takes note of a herd moving through the streets of Manhattan while observing it.[196]

While talking to the bartender at the Easy Stay Motor Inn, Maggie's excuse for looking for Negan is that her cabin has been overrun by a herd and she needs his help to clear out her home.[196]

Perlie Armstrong threatens to feed Jones to a herd outside of the motel for her crimes of running an illegal establishment. After she relents and reveals what she knows, he feeds her to the walkers for aiding and abetting a fugitive instead.[196]

After arriving in Manhattan, Maggie, Negan and Jano encounter walkers falling from the buildings after sensing the three, forcing them to take cover under some scaffolding after their hiding place of a doorway proves to be unusable due to the walkers inside of the building.[196]

Near a barricade, a vehicle drives by, playing music and drawing a herd behind. Part of the herd turns towards Maggie, Negan and Jano who hide until they encounter cockroaches. Perlie and Gritz arrive and shoot a number of the walkers while Maggie and her companions take cover in the nearby Big J Cleaners. Entering it, Perlie and Gritz block the main door against the herd outside while they search for Maggie and Negan. The two eventually manage to escape into a backroom with Negan dealing with a few walkers outside while the herd breaks through the glass of the front door and devours Gritz.[196] When Perlie eventually regains consciousness, the herd, now joined by a zombified Gritz, is still wandering around the dry cleaners, but Perlie manages to escape, albeit without his gun.[197]

In the backroom, Maggie and Negan encounter Esther who steals their belongings, but she leads them out through a hole in the celling, up an elevator shaft, and across a zipline to another building as a herd in the building that the dry cleaners are located in chases after them.[197]

During Perlie's visit to his brother's apartment, a herd tries to get at him through the broken door. Perlie escapes out of the window, but he falls into a net trap and becomes surrounded by a small herd of four walkers. Perlie is eventually rescued and captured by the Croat who uses the spikes on his helmet to put the walkers down.[197]

Tommaso, Amaia and Luther show Maggie and Negan the Croat's base at Madison Square Garden which he has surrounded with a massive herd of walkers that the Burazi use vehicles playing music to draw more into. Tommaso warns the two that they must get through the herd in order to get at the Croat and eventually reveals a way in through the subway system that Tommaso had used to escape after being captured by the Croat.[198]

After arriving in Manhattan, Ginny avoids the herd moving through the streets and loses her dinosaur toy which is picked up by Rizza.[198]

The tribespeople wait for a small herd to pass by a subway entrance before going inside.[199]

Once the tribe is inside of the arena, the Croat blows up the entrances and has a Buraz activate the entertainment system which draws the herd into the main area of the arena. As the Burazi evacuates Madison Square Garden, it is overrun by a massive herd which surrounds the tribespeople, killing most of them. The few survivors take refuge in the ring in the middle of the arena which is surrounded by a chain link fence. Although the group stabs the walkers through the fence, there proves to be far too many to put down, even from within cover. Using the ring's rubber supports as makeshift shields, the group pushes through the herd towards the exit, but Rizza is grabbed and devoured while Amaia nearly suffers the same fate before she is saved by Tommaso who was believed to have been killed by the walkers. Tommaso leads the group into the tunnels below the arena where they barricade themselves in a room with a sewer entrance. Trapped and with no better options, Maggie, Amaia, Tommaso and Ginny - the only survivors of the group that had attacked the arena - descend into the sewers while Negan, after rescuing Perlie, makes his escape with the marshal through the subway system.[199] It's later revealed that Tommaso had betrayed the group to the Croat, allowing him to trigger the trap.[200]

While making their way through the city to Chelsea Piers, Negan and Perlie are surrounded by a herd from multiple directions and take cover inside of a school. They eventually find a boarded-up exit door that's clear of walkers and make their escape.[200]

In the sewers, Maggie, Ginny, Amaia and Tommaso are attacked by a small herd of lurkers that are amongst the corpses pilled up in the sewers. Amaia is disemboweled and Tommaso is fatally bitten in the neck before Maggie manages to put all of the lurkers down.[200]

As Maggie, Negan, Ginny and Perlie are reunited, a herd is drawn to their location by Ginny's flare. Before the walkers can close in, Perlie and Ginny depart together to leave the island while Maggie and Negan go to rescue Hershel from the Croat.[201]

After tracking the Croat to the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal, Negan flees from Maggie after realizing that she's setting him up, only to find the main area of the terminal overrun by a herd. Negan smashes the heads of a few of the walkers before making his way out onto a series of beams, chased by Maggie. The fight spills onto a part of the docks that's free of the rest of the herd overrunning the terminal before the Croat and the Burazi show up to take Negan.[201]

On his way back to New Babylon, Perlie drives past a small herd.[201]

As Daryl Dixon crosses the Pont du Gard, a herd moves about the lower area of the ancient aqueduct.[202]

In the Midi-Pyrénées Market, Daryl is attacked by a small herd of 14 burners, variant walkers with acidic blood native only to France. Using his boat hook, Daryl quickly dispatches a few of them, but he gets grabbed by a burner and suffers a wound on his arm before Daryl finally manages to break free. Standing on top of a table, Daryl is able to put down most of the burners as they gather around the table and surround him, but his boat hook gets stuck when Daryl stabs it through the table and into a burner lying underneath it and Daryl accidentally breaks off the hook while freeing it. Finally, using one of his knives and the broken boat hook, Daryl is able to put down all of the burners. His arm wound from the fight is later treated by the nuns of the Abbey of Saint Bernadette.[202]

In Agen, Astérix's whines draw out a herd. With no other choice, Daryl releases and spooks the mule who charges off through the walkers who chase him. Laurent later spots the herd moving away from Astérix's partially devoured corpse.[203]

R.J. Gaines keeps a large herd in the moat of his castle. During a struggle on the drawbridge for Daryl's gun, both Daryl and RJ fall into the walker moat where RJ, still tied up and dangling helplessly over the ground, is devoured by the herd. Heavily outnumbered, Daryl fights off the walkers with his knife and his morning star before blowing up a large number of them by detonating the fuel cannisters that had fallen into the moat. While Lou and Hérisson cover Daryl with their bows, Moof pulls Daryl out of the moat using a rope attached to a horse. However, Moof recognizes one of the surviving walkers as his brother Julien and refuses to leave him like that. Upon seeing Lou struggling to shoot her friend, a sympathetic Daryl puts Julien down with his crossbow instead.[203]

In Angers, a large herd is drawn to the theater by the Conductor's music and Daryl shooting an approaching walker. However, Daryl's group leaves before it can reach them.[204]

A small herd forms out of a burner and at least five walkers behind the Parisian Apartment Building, cornering Daryl and Isabelle. After Daryl uses the burner to burn away the vines blocking a door, the two are able to escape from the herd.[204]

Before jumping from roof to roof, Daryl notices a herd in the alleyway between the Montmartre Rooftop Community and the next building over.[204]

While moving through Paris, Laurent spots a large herd moving through the streets and he avoids them.[205]

A massive herd is barricaded under the Eiffel Tower, apparently by the French military at the start of the outbreak. When Laurent approaches the barricade, he inadvertently draws their attention, causing the herd to break free and go after the boy. Laurent manages to hide under a piece of sheet metal as Daryl and Isabelle arrive to help him. Daryl takes out a number of walkers with his morning star while Isabelle stabs a few, but Laurent is found by one. Before the walker can get the boy, Armand stabs it through the head and kidnaps Laurent. While trying to rescue the boy, Daryl throws one of his kidnappers to the walkers who devour the man. Taking Armand captive, Daryl and Isabelle flee from the rest of the walkers.[205]

The Catacombs of Paris are revealed to be partially infested with walkers, including at least one herd. After getting what he needs from Armand, Daryl leaves the other man to be devoured by the herd.[205]

A large herd of lurkers is in the area around Omaha Beach and are awakened by Daryl signaling to a boat offshore. Daryl is able to fight his way through the herd and onto the beach, but Laurent stands on top of a nearby structure, having secretly followed Daryl from the Nest, and the herd starts closing in on the boy.[206] Daryl ultimately decides to save Laurent and takes him back to the Nest.[207]

In Maine, a herd is drawn to Ash's Farm by his plane taking off and gets inside of the property due to the generator going out and Carol failing to turn it back on. The herd breaks into the greenhouse and corners her, but Carol manages to climb some shelves and out of a skylight. Ash returns and he and Carol quickly dispatch the walkers, and Carol removes the bodies from the property.[207]

During a thunderstorm, a massive herd is drawn to the farm when a lightning strike destroys the generator and sets the ethanol supply on fire. With no other choice, Carol and Ash board the plane with Carol shoving a walker that gets too close into the propellor. As the herd overruns the farm, Ash taxies through the walkers, hitting several with the plane's wings, and takes off into the sky.[207]

After Ash's plane lands in Greenland, a small herd approaches, drawn by the noise. While Ash works on fixing the plane, Carol uses Daryl's Crossbow to take out two of the three walkers, only to be attacked by two lurkers before she can get the last walker. Ash saves Carol, taking out one of the lurkers with a wrench and giving Carol the chance to stab the other one. As the last walker attacks Ash, it's shot from a distance by Hanna, saving his life.[208]

On Monument Day, a herd attacks a crowd of Parisians outside of the Louvre, including Adrien Genet.[209]

When Genet takes Carol to the ruins of the Louvre in the present, a small herd is wandering the grounds. The herd slowly follows the convoy as it drives away.[209]

Genet has a crowd of dozens of selectees gunned down and then injected with the Amper Serum, turning them into a herd of Amper variants. After the Guerriers blow open the gate to the Nest with a cannon, the herd follows an ATV with Carol driving and Stéphane Codron chained to the back inside where they attack and kill a number of Union of Hope soldiers and Nest residents, serving as the first wave in the Battle of the Nest. Although the Ampers are all eventually eliminated, the Power of the Living wins the battle and seizes control of the Nest.[210]

After the fall of Maison Mère, a herd overruns the former Power of the Living fortress, partially made out of the Guerriers, workers and prisoners who had died in the riot. The herd corners Ash in an SUV when he visits Maison Mère, apparently in search of fuel, for his plane, resulting in him getting trapped for two days with a concussion. Daryl and Carol eventually manage to track Ash down and fight through the herd to him. Trapped alongside Ash, Daryl shoots two zombified Guerriers with the Amper Serum, causing them to mutate into Ampers and tear apart the entire herd in order to get at the humans. Although the two Ampers break through the SUV's windows, they are quickly dispatched by Carol. Daryl, Carol and Ash then carefully pick their way through the dismembered, decapitated and otherwise horrifically disabled walkers to safety.[211]

At the Hippodrome, Anna Valery lures Jacinta and her forces into a herd of burners in an underground parking garage. Three Union soldiers and Anna are devoured while Jacinta is bitten, leading to her later suicide.[212]

In the Chunnel, bioluminescent lurkers and some nearby walkers form into a herd that attacks Daryl's group. However, Daryl, Carol and Stéphane manage to eliminate the entire herd, although their efforts are hampered by hallucinations brought on by the psychoactive effects of bat guano.[212]

Five years after the events at the bridge, Rick Grimes, Pearl Thorne and several other CRM consignees are sent out to deal with a herd of ignited delts that are threatening the Civic Republic of Philadelphia's crops and food supply in a Level 3 hazardous event. Armed with hatchets, the consignees quickly dispatch most of the herd, but Rick takes the opportunity to cut off his left hand, cauterize the stump in a delt's body, and attempt to escape. However, Rick is quickly recaptured while the herd is put down.[213]

Later, the CRM uses a truck to draw a large herd to where the consignees are posted behind a wall at the culling facility on the outskirts of the Civic Republic. Using Kill Sticks, the consignees dispatch the walkers through holes in the wall, although Rick briefly has to be helped by Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor due to his missing hand. Rick then takes out his anger on the herd as he dispatches the walkers through the wall.[213]

While attempting to escape at Gen-Klor Chemicals, Rick draws in a herd using two flashing devices as a part of his plan for Rick to fake his death. However, Rick is forced to put down two walkers that attack him, only to discover a little girl covered in walker blood amongst the herd. Rick chooses to abort his escape plan, chasing after the little girl and dispatching the herd with Thorne's help. Thorne later reveals to Rick that the walkers that he had put down were the girl's parents while the rest of the herd was her group who had fallen victim to an unknown catastrophe. Having gotten covered in the blood and organs, the little girl had moved with the herd because she had nowhere else to go.[213]

Elle, Aiden, Bailey and Nat warn Michonne that the millions of people who were living in the Tri-State Area have become herds five-miles wide that migrate south and then a few months later, north again. As a result, it's too dangerous for Michonne to head for New Jersey during the time of year that she meets the Nomads, but she refuses to be deterred.[214]

While attempting to move through a valley, Michonne encounters one of the herds that the caravan had warned her about,[214] riding straight towards it.[109] Michonne fires Nat's screamsticks into the herd, but she accidentally ignites a walker that is carrying gas cans, causing a large explosion that knocks Michonne off of her horse. Michonne is saved when Nat uses his supply of chemicals to create two purple fires on either side of the valley, splitting the herd as half of it goes to check out each fire. Once the valley is fully cleared, Michonne is able to pass through it, now joined by Nat's Group.[214]

After being massacred by the CRM's Chlorine Gas, Nat's group all reanimates, forming a herd in the deserted town that they were killed in before eventually moving on.[214]

Major General Beale, as a part of the Echelon Briefing, tells Rick that the CRM has detected million-strong hordes and shows Rick aerial photographs of them. Beale also admits to allowing Pittsburgh and the U.S. Military forces that the Pennsylvania National Guard were fighting to fall to a massive herd that the federal forces didn't detect coming during the Second Civil War as the Pennsylvania National Guard was unable to defend both Philadelpha and Pittsburg.[215]

After the explosion at Cascadia Forward Operating Base and the release of the Chlorine Gas, the thousands of gathered Frontliners and the members of CRM Force Command reanimate into a massive herd that overruns the base's tarmac. Fighting through the walkers, Rick and Michonne manage to climb onto the shipping containers, jump from one to another to a clear area and make their escape.[215]

Trivia[]

  • The herd is the Income Tax equivalent in Monopoly: The Walking Dead Survival Edition.
  • It should be noted that, based on Abraham's description in the Comic Series, a herd isn't simply a large group of zombies, as it is formed by some zombies imitating the actions of other zombies i.e. following them when they're walking somewhere, with that being the reason the herd is constantly in motion, as the zombies are imitating each other even though they forgot what sound they were following. Of course, a large group of zombies can easily become a herd given the proper stimulation.
