Zombies in a herd are a force of nature. They don't operate on logic or reason.
Eugene Porter explaining a herd of zombies[src]

A Herd, also known as a Horde or a Swarm, is a large group of zombies. They are usually attracted by sound, leading a few individuals to come together, eventually finding and merging with new groups, growing larger and larger and even more ferocious.

Herds wander around without a real purpose until attracted by sounds or prey. Herds are notably more aggressive than smaller groups, and the presence of zombies around other zombies almost creates a "synapse", or "hive-mind" effect, with them able to react more quickly by watching what others do rather than acting on their own. Herds can smash through the heaviest of barricades, tear down fences, and completely overwhelm humans in waves of undead bodies, and are essentially the zombie population at its most dangerous.

Comic Series/Novel Series

Pre-Apocalypse

The name "Herd" was adopted from the terminology for a herd of cattle. Cattle typically bulk together to graze or for protection, and, if angered, a herd can form a deadly stampede. This formed the basis for the post-apocalyptic terminology for large groups of walkers.

Post-Apocalypse

Eugene Porter first mentions the herd in Issue 53 and explains what a herd is to the post-prison survivors in Issue 54.[1]

A herd of "about 2,000 or more" zombies is first encountered by Rick Grimes, Carl Grimes, and Morgan Jones in Issue 59, as they are traveling from Cynthiana, Kentucky, with Abraham Ford to rendezvous with the rest of the survivors.[2]

The herd are later encountered by the people of the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Issue 79. The herd proceeds to surround the safe-zone leaving the survivors trapped inside. Eventually the herd break through the safe-zone's walls and start to devour many of the residents including Tobin and Douglas Monroe. When Carl is shot in the face and injured, Rick makes a final stand with the other survivors. They manage to repel and kill the herd and learn that the undead are a manageable threat.

In Issue 127, the herd is seen when Paul Monroe and his team are steering the massive amount of zombies away from the Kingdom.

In Issue 143, an extremely large herd is seen when Alpha takes Rick at gunpoint to a building nearby the Whisperers camp. The herd is estimated to be nearing the ten-thousands.

In Issue 162, the herd from Issue 143 is seen nearing Alexandria, due to Andrea shooting a bullet in the air to notify the Alexandrians that the Militia is back from fighting in the war. The Whisperers took this at their advantage, with them not fighting anymore and letting the herd do its job.

The herd invades Alexandria, overwhelming the trenches by piling onto them and easily breaking the gate, devouring Paula in the process. Fortunately, Andrea, Eugene, and other Alexandrians are able to drive most of the herd away and into the sea. Andrea, however, is bitten while saving Eugene.

In Issue 181, after leaving Oceanside, Rick, Pamela, and their entourage encounter a herd on the road and decide to steer it away. Things go awry after Pamela gets to close, butt the Militia is able to eliminate the herd.

In Issue 190, a herd briefly invades the Commonwealth, but most of it is driven away while the rest is eliminated.

After the 15-20 year time-skip in Issue 193, zombies have become incredibly rare, to the point where they are now used as entertainment and are extremely expensive. It is, thus, safe to assume that herds are a thing of the past.

Eugene explained:

  • "Zombies in a herd are a force of nature. They don't operate on logic or reason. If one of them even so much as brushes a hand against your door [where you are hiding]--and another one sees that, mistakes that as an attempt to get in--it's over. That one starts trying to get in--the one who did the accidental tap thinks something's inside all of a sudden--he starts beating on the door with him. They would kill you all."[3]

The first herd of walkers appears in Atlanta, Georgia, when Rick Grimes arrives there in search of his family. The herd traps Rick in tank and devours the Siggard Family Horse.[4] With help from Glenn Rhee, Rick is able to escape and joins a group that gets trapped in a nearby department store by the herd. The group is able to escape from the store as the herd overruns it, leaving Merle Dixon trapped on the roof.[5] Merle is later able to escape and by the time Rick, Glenn, T-Dog and Daryl return to rescue him, the herd is gone from the store[6] aside from a few stray walkers.[7]

A small herd attacks the Atlanta Survivor Camp at night, killing and infecting multiple people including Ed Peletier and Amy. The camp's defenders, particularly Shane Walsh, Jim and Morales manage to hold them off using a combination of guns and baseball bats. When Rick, Glenn, T-Dog and Daryl return from Atlanta, they help finish off the herd with weapons from the Sheriff's bag of guns.[7] The next day, the camp survivors burn the bodies of the dead walkers while making sure their own dead don't reanimate. The attack forces the survivors to abandon the location as no longer safe while Jim is later revealed to have been bitten and eventually chooses to be left behind to turn.[8] This particular herd is referred to as being more of a small pack compared to what is later seen by survivors.[9]

After Dale's RV breaks down on the Vehicle Jammed Highway due to its troublesome radiator hose, a massive herd of hundreds of walkers is spotted heading down the highway. Rick's group takes cover under various vehicles as the herd passes by and mostly avoid notice. However, T-Dog slices open his arm on a car door and attracts several walkers to him. Daryl is able to save T-Dog by killing a walker with a screwdriver then using the walker's corpse and a corpse from a nearby car to cover himself and T-Dog, effectively masking their scent and allowing the two men to play dead. One walker enters Dale's RV through its open door and attacks Andrea, but she is able to kill it with a screwdriver through the eye. However, after the herd appears to have gone, Sophia Peletier emerges from hiding only to be attacked by two straggling walkers who chase her into the woods. Rick kills the walkers using a rock to avoid notice, but Sophia disappears.[9]

At an unnamed high school while on a mission to get medical supplies for Carl Grimes, Shane Walsh and Otis spot a massive herd of walkers that appears to mainly be made up of the FEMA and military personnel as well as the civilian survivors that had been at the high school before it was overrun. The two are able to distract the herd with flares from an abandoned patrol car and retrieve the needed supplies, but make too much noise and are chased by the herd into the school.[10] The herd chases the two men into the gym where they create a distraction and escape out the gym and locker room windows respectively. However, both men hurt their leg and use up their ammunition as they try to escape to their vehicle in the parking lot. Down to his last bullet, Shane shoots Otis in the leg and escapes as the herd focuses on devouring the other man.[11]

While investigating the Wiltshire Estates in search of Sophia, Shane and Andrea inadvertently draw the attention of a small herd. Fleeing back to Shane's car, Andrea is forced to focus and finally shoot a moving target. Andrea kills several walkers, allowing the two to reach Shane's car before suddenly turning back and shooting more walkers before they escape.[12]

During the confrontation between the Living and Rick, Hershel and Glenn at The Carriage Bar, a relatively small herd of walkers are drawn in by the gunfire. Three walkers attack the wounded Sean and though Hershel kills one, the other two devour Sean. More come from all directions as Hershel attempts to amputate Randall's leg and Rick and Glenn struggle to hold them off and buy Hershel the time he needs. Finally, Rick yanks Randall's leg off the fence post its impaled on and they flee in Hershel's truck.[13]

When Rick and Shane take Randall Culver to the Mert County Public Works, they are unaware of a small herd inside of the building. During Rick and Shane's fight, Shane throws a wrench at Rick, shattering a window and alerting the walkers inside. Rick kills the first walker to emerge and uses its body to hide under as the rest emerge. Most corner Shane in a school bus where he systematically attracts them with his blood and then stabs them in the head with a knife, allowing him to kill a few, but not to escape. After a walker discovers Rick alive, it and two others corner Rick, but he manages to kill them. Retrieving Shane's car with Randall's help, Rick shoots several walkers and helps Shane escape out the back of the bus, Randall driving over a walker's head as they drive away. The confrontation leaves only three of the walkers still alive and they attempt to chase Rick, Randall and Shane without success.[14]

A herd of walkers is drawn out of Atlanta, Georgia by a passing helicopter. As the herd continues down the road, it is joined by more and more walkers until the herd numbers in the thousands. As the herd passes through the swamp near the Greene Family Farm, it is attracted by the sound of the gunshot coming from Carl Grimes putting down a reanimated Shane Walsh. Spotting the herd, Hershel Greene, Maggie Greene, Glenn Rhee, T-Dog, Daryl Dixon, Jimmy and Andrea attempt to kill as many walkers as they can using the farm's vehicles and plan to then draw the herd away using the cars. Rick and Carl lure many into the barn and set it on fire, killing them. However, while trying to rescue the two with Dale's RV, Jimmy is overrun and devoured. While fleeing from the house when it becomes clear that the farm is lost, Patricia is similarly devoured. Carol Peletier is nearly killed looking for Carl, but is saved by Andrea who becomes separated and flees into the forest with the Sheriff's bag of guns while Carol is rescued by Daryl. Separately, the Greene family, the Grimes family, Glenn, Daryl and Carol manage to escape the farm and reunite on the Vehicle Jammed Highway. Andrea evades most of the herd, but is eventually cornered and nearly killed before she is rescued by Michonne. The Greene Family Farm is left overrun by the herd, abandoned by all of its living inhabitants.[15]

In Season 3, a herd of walkers appeared to have settled themselves in and around the West Georgia Correctional Facility. The area is known as the "Red Zone" by the people of Woodbury, Georgia.[16]

A herd not far from the red zone is found by Daryl Dixon, Tyreese, Michonne, and Bob Stookey in "Isolation". It is numbered at 7,500 walkers.[17]

The fighting between the prison group and The Governor's militia attracts a herd of nearby walkers which eventually occupy the ruined prison, rendering it uninhabitable. Clara, a woman who committed suicide in front of Rick in "30 Days Without An Accident", is among the walkers.[18]

After escaping the overrun prison, Daryl and Beth Greene hide from a herd in the trunk of an abandoned car during a thunderstorm. As it takes multiple hours for all walkers to pass, as evidenced by time lapses in the scene, it can be assumed it is a large herd passing by.[19]

A massive herd is drawn towards Terminus by the gunfire from Rick's group's attempted escape. The herd is spotted by Carol Peletier and Tyreese Williams who hide with Judith until the herd goes by. Carol and Tyreese prevent Martin from using fireworks to draw the herd away from Terminus. In order to save her friends, Carol slathers herself in walker guts and makes her way to Terminus where she witnesses the residents fending off the herd. Using a rifle and Martin's fireworks, Carol detonates a large propane tank, setting Terminus on fire and destroying a large portion of the fence. The herd is able to invade Terminus, overrunning the residents despite their best efforts to stop the walkers. Carol is able to enter Terminus disguised as a walker and help free her friends who leave Terminus to be destroyed by the overwhelming numbers of the herd.[20]

When Abraham Ford, Rosita Espinosa, Eugene Porter, Glenn Rhee, Maggie Greene, and Tara Chambler are on the way to Washington, D.C., in "Self Help", a massive herd blocks their path on the road. This eventually leads to Eugene's confession that he does not know the cure to the outbreak.[21]

A significantly large herd numbering at 30,000 walkers [17] was first seen in the Season 6 premiere, "First Time Again". It was trapped inside a rock quarry near Alexandria. Rick and the other residents planned to direct the herd away, but as they were doing a trial run part of the barrier trucks fell and released the herd, forcing them to execute the plan immediately. As they were leading the herd away, half of it broke loose due to a horn and made its way towards Alexandria, eventually arriving right at the community's wall in "Now" and began to gather around in "Heads Up".

Another herd was also present in "Thank You" at an abandoned town that Aiden and Nicholas had previously scouted for supplies. During that previous run, an accident resulted in the death of Will, a former scout for Alexandria. The herd in that abandoned town was also responsible for the deaths of SturgessAnnie and David. Later on, it led Nicholas to commit suicide after he and Glenn were cornered in an alleyway.

The section of the herd that broke off in "First Time Again" was able to enter Alexandria when the church watchtower, located outside of the wall, fell over in "Start to Finish". The herd flooded the streets, forcing all of Alexandria's residents to barricade themselves inside their homes.

In "No Way Out", the herd roamed the streets of Alexandria. Rick, Carl, Michonne, Jessie, Sam, Ron, and Father Gabriel used guts smeared on sheets to move through the herd unnoticed, planning to get outside and draw it away with cars at the quarry. Sam panicked before they could make it out and drew the attention of several walkers and was devoured. This caused a chain reaction that led to the deaths of Jessie and Ron and to Carl being shot in the eye.

Denise and Owen move through the herd but Denise is grabbed and Owen saves her resulting in him getting bitten, Denise promises to save him if they get to the infirmary.

They continue to move through the herd, but Owen is shot by Carol and - as a last stand - grabs several walkers to save Denise, she then sorrowfully leaves him to reanimate and heads towards the infirmary arriving at the same time as Rick, Michonne and an unconscious Carl.

In a fit of rage over losing Jessie and almost Carl, Rick heads outside to face the herd himself. Aaron, Michonne, Heath and Spencer head outside to help and soon Olivia, Eric and Bruce, join alongside the rest of the able bodied Alexandrians.

Glenn and Enid go together to save Maggie but Glenn is surrounded and is about to be devoured when Sasha and Abraham arrive and shoot all the walkers, saving Glenn.

Daryl pours all oil from the truck into the lake and fires his rocket launcher, creating a huge fire, all the walkers see this and walk towards it killing themselves, The Alexandrian army take this time to kill all possible walkers. This marks the end of the super herd.

On their way back from the Kingdom Rick and his group stumbles upon a herd on a highway near the Sanctuary cutting most of them in half with a wire between two cars and let some explode with TNT.

When Rick's group tries to get guns from Oceanside, the commotion draws a nearby barnacle-encrusted herd. Upon noticing the herd, the two groups team up together and take out all of the walkers without losing a single person.[22]

At the beginning of Season 8, the Militia lures a massive herd to the Sanctuary and take down its fences, effectively leaving the Saviors under siege while they destroy all of the Savior outposts. The plan is stated to be to use the herd to force the Savior lieutenants to surrender and allow them to kill Negan.

In "The Big Scary U," Negan and Gabriel Stokes are left trapped together in a wooden trailer while the situation in the Sanctuary grows more dire. Negan convinces Gabriel to work with him and they smear themselves in walker guts in an attempt to reach the entrance to the Sanctuary safely. Despite the walkers eventually seeing through the trick and attacking, the two men manage to make it into the Sanctuary. However, using walker guts in such a way leaves Gabriel with an infection that is making him progressively more ill.

In "Time for After," Eugene Porter tries to use a makeshift drone and music device to lead the herd away but is thwarted by Dwight. At the same time, Daryl Dixon, Tara Chambler and Morgan Jones work together against orders to break the Sanctuary walls and allow the herd in to finish the Saviors. Though they succeed, Eugene proposes a plan using most of the Saviors remaining weapons and ammunition to clear out the herd. As seen in "Honor," after managing to clear out the inside of the Sanctuary, several Saviors fire upon the remaining walkers outside from the Sanctuary's upper windows, allowing Saviors to pour out and kill most of the remaining walkers. According to Simon in "How It's Gotta Be," his men draw the remainder away and he threatens to use them against the Hilltop until Maggie agrees to his demands.

In "Monsters", after succumbing to his gunshot wound and dying, Eric Raleigh reanimates and stumbles off to join a nearby herd. The reanimated Eric is spotted by his devastated boyfriend Aaron who has to be held back by Scott from going after him.

In "Some Guy," Ezekiel and his surviving forces come up against a herd of walkers, mainly made up of the slaughtered Kingdom forces. When Ezekiel and Jerry get cornered, Carol sacrifices her chance to stop the remaining Saviors to save the two men. Fleeing, the three encounter a small herd near a polluted creek, presumably people who drank from the creek and died. Cornered, they are saved by Shiva who sacrifices herself so that they can escape.

A small herd is seen gathered outside of the Hilltop following the attack by the Saviors, presumably attracted by the gunfire.[23] The herd is still outside of the Hilltop a day later and has to be drawn away by Kal and the guards when Carol returns with Henry.[24] As the preparations for the final battle begin, Alden and the Savior defectors offer to draw the herd away from the Hilltop completely. Maggie accepts their offer and the former Saviors succeed without suffering any harm. Upon their return, they are accosted by Morgan who was unaware of their mission.[25]

While looking for Henry and the Savior escapees, a walker herd is spotted by Morgan and Carol. As Carol splits off to find Henry, Morgan continues in the direction of the herd and is joined by Rick. After the two are captured by the escaped Saviors, Rick and Morgan warn about the herd which attacks the abandoned dive bar the escaped prisoners are using as their base. The Saviors free Rick and Morgan after the herd kills several of the Saviors and the two men and the Saviors work together before Rick and Morgan suddenly turn on the Saviors and kill them. In order to kill Jared, Morgan purposefully traps him to be devoured by several walkers. In the fight, most of the herd is killed and the much if not all of the rest appear to wander out of the bar again once the Saviors are all dead.[26]

As the Militia makes their way to the final battle with the Saviors, they spot a massive herd filling the horizon in the distance. The Militia is horrified by the sight, particularly as none of them have ever seen a herd so big before. Rick notes that "the world is changing" before they move on. After defeating the Saviors, Rick uses the herd as part of his motivational speech, pointing it out and warning everyone that it will be coming for them unless they can learn to stand together.[27]

Eighteen months after the defeat of the Saviors, a supply convoy is ambushed by a small herd of walkers which is quickly attacked by Daryl and Michonne while the rest of the group attempts to free a stuck wagon. During the fight, Ken is bitten and kicked by a horse. To buy Siddiq time to treat Ken, Rick and Ezekiel join Daryl and Michonne's efforts. Together, the four eliminate the small herd, but Ken dies of his injuries.[28]

During work on repairing a bridge, the work crew has to account for the presence of two nearby herds, one around a hundred members and the other which is even bigger. Blasting to get rid of a rock slide draws the smaller herd which Jerry and Justin are tasked with redirecting. However, Justin fails to do his job and the herd attacks the lumber yard, resulting in Aaron suffering so much damage to his left arm that it later has to be partially amputated. Rick arrives with reinforcements which engage the walkers. Finally, Rick sends a pile of giant logs rolling down the hill over the walkers, killing them all.[29]

After being killed by Oceanside at their former settlement, Justin is fed upon by a herd before they eventually wander off. After the herd is gone, Justin reanimates himself and wanders off as well.[30]

As work on the bridge grinds to a halt, Rick is warned by Eugene that two huge herds are nearby, but are moving parallel and will not combine. Later, Jed's rebellion draws the attention of one of the herds, putting a trapped Rick and Daryl along with the camp into danger. After escaping, Daryl suggests leading the walkers onto the bridge which won't bear their weight and they will get swept out to sea. However, Rick refuses to give up on the project and instead tries to use a horse to draw the herd away. Rick inadvertently leads the herd chasing him to the second herd and is thrown from his horse and seriously wounded as the two herds combine.[31] Rick manages to recover and though seriously hurt, gets back on his horse and continues leading the combined herd towards the bridge. Rick leads the herd across the bridge, but it holds. As Rick's friends desperately try to help him, he notices a case of dynamite fall over on the bridge and shoots it, destroying the bridge and hundreds of walkers caught in the explosion. The herd still on the road continues walking over the bridge, falling through the hole blasted in the middle of it and getting washed out to sea. Unknown to everyone else, Rick survives and is rescued by Anne and her friends in a helicopter.[32]

Six years after Rick's apparent death, Magna's group is ambushed by a herd near an old barn. Judith Grimes clears a path out for the group using Rick's old Colt Python and they escape.[32] A few walkers follow but are put down by Eugene.[33]

At Magna's rig, they find that it has been destroyed by walkers though Magna believes it to be a different herd than the one that Judith rescued them from. Later, a massive herd attacks the group outside of an old factory. The group manages to escape and Michonne realizes that its the same one that destroyed Magna's rig when she spots Bernie amongst them. Michonne mercifully puts down Bernie and they are able to escape.[34]

At the same time Michonne's group faces the large herd, a small herd is drawn to Daryl's campsite where they get caught in various traps while trying to get at Dog. Though he runs into trouble, Daryl manages to rescue Dog and dispatch the herd with the help of Henry.[34]

While trying to put up radio equipment, Eugene and Rosita are forced to run from a strangely acting herd.[34]. Due to Eugene's injured knee, Rosita has to leave Eugene behind as she tries to evade the herd. She is eventually rescued by Aaron and Jesus and warns them of the threat she witnessed.[35]

While searching for the missing Eugene, Daryl, Jesus and Aaron spot a massive herd in a field that Daryl tries to redirect. However, the Whisperers amongst the herd prevent the misdirection from working. After being rescued, Eugene suspects that the walkers are evolving as the most likely explanation for their adaptive behavior. The herd eventually chases the party into a cemetery where they are joined by Michonne, Magna and Yumiko. During the battle with the herd, Jesus is killed by a Whisperer who is then killed along with four more Whisperers by Jesus' friends. The herd and the Whisperers advance on the group,[35] but they escape the cemetery after killing four more Whisperers. Though Daryl locks the herd in the cemetery, a Whisperer opens the gate and lets them out.[36]

The next day, Michonne's group spots a small herd of six walkers trailing them and leads them onto a covered bridge where Daryl and Michonne ambush the walkers. Of the six, three prove to be Whisperers. Michonne's group kills the walkers and two of the Whisperers while the third surrenders. Before they can question their captive too much, a larger approaching herd forces the group to push on to Hilltop with their captive.[36]

After reaching the abandoned Sanctuary, Negan is forced to face off with a small herd made up of six reanimated Saviors, including Richie. Negan easily dispatches the other five walkers with a pipe and locks Richie out, but chooses to return to Alexandria and puts Richie down before leaving.[36]

While searching for the missing Alden and Luke, a group from the Hilltop comes across a small herd feasting on the two missing men's horses. Being careful to keep an eye out for Whisperers amongst the herd, the group quickly dispatches the walkers who all turn out to be real walkers. Upon closer examination, its discovered that the horses were cut open and skinned, meaning that the walkers hadn't been the ones to kill them.[37]

Later that night, Magna's group go out searching for this missing friends and find strange tracks. However, the presence of a large herd in the distance causes Magna and Yumiko to decide to turn back while Connie and Kelly decide to continue searching for their missing friends.[37]

The day after Alden and Luke disappear, Alpha arrives at the Hilltop with the Whisperers. The loud argument with the Hilltop residents draws a herd of walkers which Alpha has her people redirect so that they can safely finish the conversation. However, a mother can't quiet her baby so she abandons it to the walkers. Connie rescues the baby, fighting off multiple walkers until Daryl arrives to help with Kelly and Tammy Rose Sutton. The herd eventually moves on before the confrontation between the Hilltop and the Whisperers is over.[38]

As the Whisperers face off with the Hilltop, the Kingdom races a herd to kill enough elk for the upcoming fair. Their side mission to retrieve a projector bulb also races the approach of this same herd with the Kingdom team getting out before the herd can arrive.[38]

At the Royal cinema, the Kingdom forces find it filled with a herd of walkers, most of which they draw away with a boom box playing music which eventually dies. However, around thirty to forty walkers are left trapped in one of the theaters. After Jerry drops the bulb amongst the herd, the Kingdom team works together to eliminate the trapped herd which proves to be small enough for them to deal with by using the stairs as a choke-point and each member of the team targeting a few walkers each.[38]

After Alpha kills Helen and Sean, the Whisperers feed their corpses to a nearby herd. That night, as Alpha tries to force Lydia to kill Henry, a herd suddenly attacks the Whisperer camp, killing at least three Whisperers. As the Whisperers don their masks to hide amongst the attacking herd, a disguised Daryl and Connie, having lured the herd to attack the camp, use the opportunity to rescue Henry and Lydia.[39]

On the way to the Kingdom for the trade fair, the Hilltop delegation is attacked by a herd which the delegation struggles to fend off. Drawn by the cries of Adam Sutton, a group of walkers attack Earl Sutton who is almost overwhelmed before Tammy Rose saves him. As the group continues to fight, several Highwaymen arrive led by Ozzy and help to dispatch the herd.[40]

Following the attack on the Whisperer camp, Beta leads a herd that includes a Whisperer who was bitten during the camp attack to hunt down Daryl's group and retrieve Lydia. The group blockades the staircases in a tall building while waiting on the top floor, forcing the Whisperers to go up alone. After killing the other Whisperers and trapping Beta in an elevator shaft, Connie draws the herd away by using her slingshot to break out a van's windows, allowing the group to safely escape.[40]

After Judith goes missing, Michonne finds her fighting a small herd of walkers. Together, Michonne and Judith kill the herd.[41]

Alpha shows Daryl a herd of thousands upon thousands of walkers and reveals that her people are amongst them, steering the herd which Alpha calls a horde. Alpha threatens to unleash the herd upon the Coalition if they cross her again.[42] Months later, the herd has somehow left the area undetected. Daryl and Carol later visit the spot where Alpha showed Daryl the herd and find it still gone, but Carol spots Alpha herself in the trees below.[43] Daryl later states that there were tens of thousands of walkers in this herd.[44]

The Coalition discovers a beached ship on Oceanside's beach with a herd trapped inside. Having trained for such a moment and armed with shields, arrows and spears, the Coalition flawlessly takes down the herd, even after they burst out of the ship en masse.[43]

While taking a ride together, Daryl and Carol encounter and take out a few walkers in some friendly competition. However, they also draw a small herd in the process. Together, the two manage to eliminate the herd without much trouble.[43]

As the Coalition fights a fire started by the crash of a satellite, the noise and flames draw a herd to the site. Unable to leave as they can't risk the fire spreading, the Coalition is forced to fight the herd with Carol at one point using a walker's blood to douse some flames and Daryl dropping a burning tree onto several walkers with an axe. Though the Coalition members suffer some injuries, they are able to eliminate the herd without anyone dying or getting bit and put out the fire.[43]

Over the course of a few days time, waves of walkers besiege Alexandria who, despite exhaustion, manage to kill all of the walkers in each wave. Though the Alexandrians fear it is Alpha sending her horde after them, Lydia expresses doubt as Alpha would send the entire horde at once instead of waves at a time. Instead, Eugene suggests that the walkers had been drawn to the area by the satellite crash.[44]

After Alpha's death, Beta is drawn to the Grand Hotel where he plays some of his old music throughout the night, drawing in a massive herd. In the morning, Beta puts down Alpha's zombified head, removes a part of her face to replace the ripped part of his walker mask and leaves unnoticed through the herd.[45]

While torturing National Guardsman Corporal Andrew Adams, Daniel Salazar learns that the National Guard had locked 2,000 people in the Los Angeles Arena after people started to turn into walkers and chaos ensued. Visiting the arena, Daniel discovers it full of thousands of walkers trying to get out.[46] Daniel subsequently releases the massive herd and uses it to attack the National Guard Compound as a distraction so that Madison's group can rescue their loved ones. The herd overruns the compound as Madison's group escapes, but Elizabeth Ortiz is bitten in the process and is put down by Travis Manawa at her request.[47] This herd is presumably completely destroyed when the U.S. Military bombs Los Angeles with napalm as part of Operation Cobalt.[48]

As Madison's group attempts to escape on The Abigail, a herd attacks, forcing Madison and Travis to fight them off using driftwood and rocks. As Nick evacuates the group in a Zodiac, one walker chases them but is killed when Nick and Chris Manawa drive the Zodiac's running propeller into its head. Madison's group manages to escape to The Abigail and the herd is presumably destroyed during Operation Cobalt.[48]

While searching for supplies on the beach where Flight 462 crashed, Alex arrives chased by a massive herd. Daniel Salazar kills several with a pistol, but quickly runs out of ammunition, forcing Daniel, Alex, Alicia and Chris to arm themselves with makeshift weapons from the plane's wreckage. Though they kill several walkers, the four are cornered until Nick arrives, covered in walker blood from an earlier encounter with two walkers. Nick's attack allows the group to run while Nick realizes that the walker blood effectively makes him invisible to the herd who see Nick as just another walker. Chased closely by the herd, the group manages to escape on the Zodiac to The Abigail.[49]

When Nick and Luis Flores make their way to a boat to reach The Abigail, a herd can be seen on the beach near them, albeit at a slightly higher elevation. The two are able to escape on the boat without being noticed by the herd.[50]

After being poisoned to death by Celia Flores, a priest and his parishioners in the town of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California end up forming a small herd that is encountered by Madison's group. Using their own weapons and the weapons the parishoners were wielding before their deaths, Madison's group is able to put down the entire herd. However, Chris purposefully fails to help Madison when she falls into trouble, something that Alicia notices and later confronts him on.[51]

When Daniel sets the Abigail Hacienda on fire, a herd is drawn to it. Madison, Strand, Alicia and Ofelia escape in a truck though Nick refuses to join them. Having earlier slathered himself in walker guts to search for Travis and Chris, Nick is able to walk through the herd unharmed and escape on his own.[52]

A few days after the destruction of the Hacienda, Nick is attacked by stray dogs while making his way through the desert to Tijuana. A herd appears while Nick is trapped on top of an old van and the dogs attack them instead, leading to the herd devouring the dogs and inadvertently saving Nick's life. However, Nick makes too much noise and the herd is drawn towards him until the sound of a horn and gunshots draws them back towards the highway. Binding his leg with the belt of a maimed walker and covering himself in walker blood, Nick joins the herd, but begins hallucinating them talking to him due to a combination of exhaustion, the heat and dehydration, even seeing Gloria in place of one of the walkers. The herd eventually comes under attack by Gael and two other members of La Manas, but Gael gets distracted when he spots the obviously human Nick, who he had earlier encountered, amongst the herd resulting in Gael dropping his bullets. Gael is unable to reload quickly enough and he and another member of the gang are devoured by the walkers. Nick continues walking with the herd until he finally collapses and is left behind.[53]

While in the Rosarito Beach Hotel bar, Madison and Strand get drunk and Strand starts banging on the piano while Madison smashes glasses against the wall. The noise draws out a herd trapped in a store across the street as well as causing many of the walkers that were locked in various rooms to throw themselves off of the room balconies. The gathering herd quickly swarms into the hotel, cornering Madison and Strand behind the bar and flooding the stairwells into the upper floors of the tower.[54] Unable to find another way out, Madison and Strand cover themselves in walker blood in a store room behind the bar and are able to walk out through the herd, locking many walkers in the bar behind them. After finding their truck gone, the two manage to enter and barricade themselves in the spa building.[55] At the same time, the trapped Alicia manages to escape to a higher floor where she encounters Elena Reyes, the former hotel manager who had locked the walkers in the rooms in the first place. Working together, they are able to lure the walkers on their floor into one of the rooms while Alicia escapes to an adjacent room's balcony with Elena's help. However, upon reaching the bar, the two women find it blockaded and Elena is forced to turn over the keys to the hotel to save her nephew. Alicia, Hector and Elena manage to escape through a tunnel to the spa building where they are saved by Madison and Strand.[56] With the walkers having moved on enough that the area is relatively safe again, Madison convinces Oscar Diaz to work together to clear the hotel and make it into a safe place. After clearing out some of the undead, Alicia comes up with the idea to use the riptide under the hotel's pier to sweep them out to sea instead. Working together, the group channels the undead from the three different parts of the hotel onto the pier where Madison leads the massive herd to a break in the pier. As Madison jumps and is picked up Alicia and Hector in a Zodiac, the herd follows her through, gets caught in the riptide and is swept out to sea.[55]

At La Colonia, the residents sacrifice themselves to "the wall" when they are dying, a herd of walkers made up of undead residents and their families acting as a barrier to help protect the community from invasion. As a result, scouts for the community cover themselves in walker blood and pass through a bus blocking a hole in the fence to get out.[54] After deciding to flee La Colonia, Francisco passes through the herd by putting one down, pulling it into the bus and covering himself, his wife and his daughter in its blood. The walkers are fooled by the trick and after smelling them briefly, allow the three to pass through unmolested.[57] When the Los Hermanos gang invades La Colonia, they gun down several of the walkers. Once they are inside the compound, the dying Alejandro Nuñez moves the bus and allows the herd to swarm La Colonia. When Madison, Travis and Alicia arrive, the herd has killed the gangsters who have reanimated and become members of the herd themselves. The trio quickly abandons La Colonia after ensuring Alejandro doesn't reanimate when he dies.[58]

While near the US-Mexico border, Ofelia's truck breaks down and she is attacked by several walkers. After putting them down with a hammer and a knife she takes from one of the walkers, Ofelia spots a small herd of around a dozen walkers coming up the road. Rather than stay and fight them or try to fix her truck, Ofelia abandons the truck and runs off before the herd can reach her.[59]

Angry at the Black Hat Reservation natives being allowed into the Broke Jaw Ranch, Troy Otto uses a grenade launcher to lure a herd into attacking the ranch. While trying to stop his brother, Jake is bitten by a walker and dies despite Troy and Nick's attempts to save him. At the same time, the ranch's militia tries to fend off the herd to no avail. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, the survivors are forced to retreat into the pantry.[60] With the pantry's air vent broken, Alicia Clark mercifully puts down those that were bitten while Ofelia Salazar and Crazy Dog attempt to fix the problem before the survivors suffocate while Nick and a remorseful Troy attempt to rescue the residents. As time runs out, Ofelia and Crazy Dog find and put down a walker clogging the vent system, but too late to save anyone but Alicia from suffocating. The two detonate the ranch's fuel supply, drawing the herd away and allowing Madison, Victor Strand, Qaletaqa Walker, Nick and Troy to rescue Alicia from the reanimated pantry residents.[61] However, it is later revealed that Ofelia was bitten by the walker in the vents and subsequently dies.[62]

As part of his plan to take the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium, Ennis gathers a massive herd of walkers from the various places where The Vultures have trapped them. At night at the stadium, Ennis ignites a trail of oil in front of the gates and releases the walkers, covered in oil.[63] Under attack, the panicked residents flee despite Madison's belief that the stadium walls will keep the herd out. The herd surrounds and massacres the escaping residents, aside from June who had gone back for medical supplies and ran for it when she thought everyone else dead and found herself too outnumbered. At the same time, Mel escapes with Charlie and Nick, Alicia, Strand and Luciana are trapped outside. Knowing that the stadium walls could be used to keep the herd trapped, Madison lights a flare and leads most of the herd inside, planning to double back through the tunnels and escape. However, too many walkers remain in the parking lot, so Madison seals herself and the majority of the herd inside the stadium and ignites the oil-soaked walkers with her flare, sacrificing herself so that her friends and family can escape.[64] The presence of the herd inside the stadium makes it too dangerous for the Vultures to enter, forcing Ennis and the others to scavenge only what they can from the outside.[63]

A couple of weeks later, after John Dorie is shot in the abdomen by Alicia, June leads Charlie, Al and Morgan Jones back to the stadium for medical supplies. Breaking through the barricaded gate, they find the massive herd of walkers who survived the fire but were left badly charred.[63] Al is able to clear a path for Morgan and June with her SWAT van's guns, allowing them to reach the infirmary and retrieve the much needed supplies. Despite an attack by a vengeful Alicia, Morgan's group manages to escape the stadium and the herd safely. The stadium survivors subsequently explain the story of the stadium's fall to the others.[64]

While searching a lumber yard for a survivor sending notes attached to walkers, Morgan and Alicia find a small herd blocking the door to the room the man is in. The two lure the herd outside and dispatch it by dropping a pile of logs on the walkers. However, they discover that the man has already died and reanimated and they can only put him down.[65]

After Martha tries to kill Morgan's group with the guns of Al's SWAT van, the gunfire attracts a herd to their location. The group flees on foot, chased by the ever-growing herd and finally taking refuge in an abandoned hospital in Austin, Texas. However, the hospital itself proves to be full of walkers while the herd eventually breaks through the doors. The group, aside from Al who separates to activate the hospital generators, are forced to take cover on the roof where they find that Jim Brauer was bitten and there is no way down.[66] With power running out, Morgan comes up with a plan to distract the herd while the others use the freight elevators to get out as they discovered Al did from a note she left them in the generator room. By throwing a dead walker off the hospital roof and triggering a car alarm, Morgan buys enough time for June, Sarah and Wendell to escape while he remains trapped on the roof with a dying Jim. The group eventually returns for Morgan along with Alicia, Strand and John, using a firetruck ladder to get Morgan off the roof. When they make too much noise, the dying Jim sacrifices himself by jumping off the roof and setting off another car alarm, drawing the walkers away and allowing his friends to escape. By the time Martha returns that night to witness Jim's reanimation, the herd is gone.[67]

Al manages to escape the walkers in the hospital through the freight elevator and basement and spends the night in a post office. The next day, she is chased by a herd, possibly the same one that had cornered Morgan's group, but escapes into a parking garage, locking the herd out. After an encounter with Martha and a zombified Jim, Al is eventually rescued from Austin by her friends.[68]

While Morgan's group is at The Flip-Flop Truck Stop, a herd of walkers is drawn in when they kill a single walker with a gunshot, leaving the group trapped inside, severely weakened from Martha's poisoning of them. After learning that they were poisoned with antifreeze, the group makes a plan to get ethanol from a crashed tanker truck outside. As the others clear a path through the herd, Alicia and Sarah attempt to get the ethanol and Al reaches her SWAT van and uses its guns to take down the herd. However, the shots also punch holes in the tanker, spilling all of the needed ethanol. The gunfire attracts more walkers to the truck stop, but Morgan takes them out when he finally arrives to help.[68]

After crashing a plane while trying to help Logan, Alicia, Al, John, June and Luciana inadvertently draw a herd to the crash site. As June tries to free a trapped and badly injured Luciana, Alicia, Al and John hold off the herd using traps and makeshift weapons, including a large propeller blade from the plane. Though they manage to kill many walkers, there prove to be too many. However, after Luciana is freed, Annie arrives in a van, running over two walkers and driving the group and her siblings to safety. When Al later returns to the crash site to investigate a strange walker, the herd is gone.[69] Morgan and Alicia later return with Grace to check that none of the herd was radioactive. Grace is able to confirm that all of the dead walkers were clean.[70]

As Morgan, Alicia and Grace search the crash site, another herd arrives with a radioactive walker amongst their number. Despite Grace's warnings, Alicia faces off with the walkers armed with her sharpened gun mount. However, the radioactive walker loses his dosimeter in the mud, making it impossible to tell the walkers apart. Despite the dangers, Alicia gets in close to eliminate the walkers, nearly getting killed by one at one point. Using a Geiger counter, Grace is able to locate the radioactive member of the herd and shoots him while Morgan catches the body in a tarp for safe disposal.[70]

While exploring Camp Cackleberry, John and June discover the aftermath of a battle between the residents and a herd of walkers that the residents won. However, they also find the residents reanimated in the cabins and the burned remains of the herd. Based off of the dosimeters in the ashes, the two realize the herd was more of the radioactive walkers, about half of the total number that was created by a power plant meltdown. The residents burning their bodies released the radiation into the air and made them terminally ill after they believed that they were safe. Grace subsequently takes the remains with her to bury in some caverns near the plant to prevent anyone getting sick from them again.[70] Morgan and Alicia later learn that Max, Annie, Dylan and their friends are the children of the people who died as a result of the fight with the radioactive herd.[71] Annie eventually explains to Alicia that one of the camp's survivors made a mistake on a scavenging run and led the herd back. With more walkers arriving and the walls close to falling, the adults prepared for a fight and sent their children away for their own safety. When Annie returned alone three days later, she found that the adults had won the battle but were terminally ill as a result.[72]

In the Humbug's Gulch ghost town, the noise of a spinning windmill draws walkers. John notes that the speed indicates a likely dust storm and will draw even more. Soon, a herd forms and though John and June nearly escape undetected during the storm, an attack by Dwight draws their attention, forcing them to hide inside the Humbug's Gulch club. After the three put aside their differences, they activate the club's automatic piano to distract the walkers while they escape through the roof. Using weapons from the club and an axe, the group is able to fight their way through the walkers that get too close. However, while John and June escape, Dwight splits off to search the couple's van for clues to his missing wife, resulting in Dwight getting surrounded by the remaining walkers. Firing from down the street, John and June take out most of the walkers while Dwight takes out a few with his gun and axe. With Dwight pinned, two walkers left and only a single bullet, John does a trick shot using the last bullet and the axe, taking out the remaining two walkers. The entire herd, described by John as being about three dozen walkers, is taken out in the process.[73]

While Daniel and Charlie try to clear a store of a deadly machine gun trap, Skidmark's antics inadvertently draw a herd of people inside, who fell victim to the trap in the first place, to the windows. This triggers the trap and the gun shoots out the glass in the store letting out the herd. Though Daniel and Charlie escape in Daniel's car, Daniel chooses to lead the herd back to his warehouse to take it out where they have the advantage. Daniel has less than half of what it would take to kill the herd with him, especially since the herd will grow and knows that if its allowed to continue, more people will fall victim to it. After finding out that Sarah breached his perimeter wall while removing Daniel's plane, Daniel sends Charlie back in the car and leads the herd on foot using a music box. Rather than leave Daniel to die, Strand, Charlie, Sarah and Wendell race to Daniel's aid, but the guns in Al's SWAT van fail to fire. Instead, Strand starts the plane's engines, which had been towed to the location by a semi. The noise draws the walkers into the engines, chopping them all to pieces and eliminating the entire herd. However, in the process the plane's engines are damaged beyond repair, preventing its use to save the rest of the group.[71]

After crashing in the radioactive zone, Charlie and Strand become surrounded by walkers, at least two of which are radioactive. The two are left in a quandary as Morgan warns them against killing any walkers due to the risk of becoming contaminated themselves.[72] Strand shoots several walkers that are not contaminated, but he and Charlie avoid killing some of the walkers that show up, at least three of which have dosimeters. The two are able to barricade themselves behind the fabric of the balloon until Morgan arrives in a radiation suit he found in the car of one of the power plant workers. Morgan safely puts down all of the walkers, including the contaminated ones and Strand and Charlie depart with the propellers as Morgan goes to help Grace.[74]

While Annie's Group are trying to fix their walker blockade that was damaged by Alicia, the walkers break free and begin chasing them. The walkers become a herd that chases the group back to their hideout. To buy the kids time, Alicia attacks the walkers, killing many as the children escape down a rope. However, when Alicia kills one walker, her sharpened gun mount gets stuck and she gets splashed with the walker's blood when she pulls it out. To her horror, Alicia discovers that the walker has a dosimeter, making it radioactive and exposing her to a potentially fatal dose of radiation. Recognizing that her plan isn't working, Alicia runs out through the gap she created and leads the herd away so that the kids can make it to the truck stop. Alicia loses the herd long enough to clean her face at a pond and talk with Morgan on the radio. However, the herd catches up again as alarms sound signaling the start of the second meltdown, forcing Alicia to run from them.[74] By the next morning, Alicia manages to link up with Morgan and Grace and decontaminate at Grace's truck. However, the herd catches up to them so the group leads it past the roadblock, planning to use the sirens to draw the herd to the plant. Before the herd can get too far, the sirens stop as the reactor melts down completely and turns back on Morgan, Alicia and Grace. The three are forced to run with the herd chasing them back to the plane where they decide to hold it off so that John and Dwight can return in time. As they are being forced to leave anyway, John and Dwight return and the group flees on the plane, killing a few of the chasing walkers. With some of the herd hanging onto the plane's cargo netting, John and Morgan release the netting and the plane makes it safely into the air, leaving the herd behind.[75]

After their truck breaks down, Daniel and Grace are attacked by a few walkers. However, while they are dispatching the walkers and Daniel is collecting his spilled records, a herd arrives. The two are forced to run and manage to escape the herd, taking cover in an abandoned bar for the night.[76]

After trying to get The Caravan to join her pioneers without success, Virginia draws the attention of a nearby herd to force the Caravan to need her help. The Caravan survivors quickly move their cars to form a blockade and fight off the walkers while trying to cross a collapsing bridge. With the walkers breaking through the blockade, the Caravan is forced to flee across the bridge on foot without finishing patching it. As the walkers come across, the weight of the fuel tanker causes their end of the bridge to break, sending the herd into the water below. However, because Tom stays on the bridge to keep recording, he falls to his death when it collapses.[77]

When the Caravan finally arrive at Humbug's Gulch, they find it surrounded by a massive herd of walkers with no sign of a way in. Out of options, the group is forced to call Virginia for help as a result.[77]

A herd of walkers is seen following the train Lee's group is riding to Savannah. The group stops when a crashed gasoline tanker blocks the tracks, forcing them to to cut it loose from the bridge. They are still trying to remove it when Ben spots the herd approaching from behind. Everyone except for Omid and Lee, who were on the bridge cutting the tanker, get on the train to leave. The two then try to jump onto the vehicle. Lee makes it, but Omid lands badly, hurts his leg, falls off, and starts limping towards the moving train. Christa jumps down to help and they manage to get back on, temporarily escaping the herd.

The same herd later follows the track all the way to Savannah and trap Lee's group as they search for Clementine. They are later attracted to the city of Savannah by the ringing of church bells around the city. They later show up and claim the lives of many people in Lee's group including Ben and when he gets trapped in an alleyway by the herd. On his journey to the Marsh House Lee has to fight his way through the herd, killing dozens of walkers before getting to the Marsh House. Lee has to navigate back though this herd on his way out of the Marsh House with Clementine. However this time he does so undetected by using walker guts to disguise Clementine's and his scent from the herd.

Later on, a large herd amassed near an old hardware store and strip mall fortified by a group led by William Carver. Clementine, along with several people attempting to escape Carver's camp, alerted the herd using the store's P.A. system, and made their escape by covering themselves in blood and entrails from a few dead zombies, walking through the herd as it quickly overwhelmed Carver's camp, devouring Troy and Carlos.

If Clementine ends the game with A.J. she encounters a herd.

Trivia

  • The herd is the Income Tax equivalent in The Walking Dead Monopoly.
  • It should be noted that, based on Abraham's description in the Comic Series, a herd isn't simply a large group of zombies, as it is formed by some zombies imitating the actions of other zombies i.e. following them when they're walking somewhere, with that being the reason the herd is constantly in motion, as the zombies are imitating each other even though they forgot what sound they were following. Of course, a large group of zombies can easily become a herd given the proper stimulation.
