I'll call the cops!
―The hermit to Rick Grimes and company after they break into his home.[src]

This hermit is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. He is an insane man who lives in an isolated hut in the woods.

Overview[]

Due to loss of sanity, this hermit seems to be have no idea about the apocalypse going on around him. Seeing as it is unlikely and absurd that he genuinely had no idea of the outbreak, he most likely was in denial about it. His insanity is most likely caused due to being isolated, living alone in a cabin with no one else nearby. Though he does own a dog, it is shown to have died, yet for some reason the hermit decides to keep its corpse in the house. When Rick's group enters the house and finds the hermit, he immediately takes out his gun, most likely believing them to be robbers. He even believes that there is still law enforcement, threatening to call the cops on them. He completely ignores Rick's warnings about the walkers outside and tries to run out to get help, prompting Michonne to stab him in the back and his corpse is used to distract the walkers.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Rural Georgia[]

Nothing is known about this hermit's life prior to or as the outbreak began aside that he owned a dog.

Post-Apocalypse[]

It is seen that this hermit survived over ten months of the apocalypse with his dog Hunter, but he died at some point. His corpse was left inside the house. It is unknown how he survived, as he seemed to have no idea that the apocalypse was occurring at all, believing that police were still existent.

Season 3[]

"When the Dead Come Knocking"[]

After realizing that there are too many walkers to safely engage at the forest path, Rick Grimes and his small group flee. They eventually come upon a shed with boarded-up windows and seek refuge within. Rick yanks on a blanket, awakening and startling the hermit, who draws a shotgun. Rick attempts reasoning with the frantic hermit and warns him of the walkers outside, but he's unresponsive to "walkers" and seems oblivious to the apocalypse in general, threatening to call the police on the group. Rick assures him that he's a cop and the hermit demands to see his badge, which he no longer possessed as it was left behind at the farm. Rick lies and claims it's in his pocket and seizes the opportunity to distract the hermit and disarms him. The hermit then flees for the front door, ignoring the group's warnings. As he runs to the door, Michonne Hawthorne impales him with her katana through the back to stop him from opening the door and letting the walkers in. Rick and Daryl Dixon then pick up the hermit's body, despite Oscar's reservations, throwing it to the walkers as a distraction and proceed to make their escape out the back door.
