Hershel is sent on a mission to retrieve weapons from the prison's basement armory. Fighting his way through walkers, Hershel retrieves an assault rifle and opens the door to a locked room holding a bag of weapons. However, this also unlocks the gates holding a number of walkers in their cells, forcing Hershel to fight his way out. As Hershel reaches Rick/Shane, he is grabbed from behind by a walker and bitten on the leg. If it's Rick who survived, Rick saves Hershel and amputates his leg. If it's Shane instead, he allows Hershel to be devoured in favor of saving the guns.

While gathering weapons from the prison, Hershel is bitten on the leg by a walker. Shane, instead of trying to save Hershel, gathers the weapons and leaves him to be devoured by walkers.
