Pope ordering Ancheta to fire the hwacha into the courtyard.[src]

A Hwacha is a weapon that is used by the Reapers, which is designed to fire multiple explosive projectiles at a particular target through the use of pyrotechnics, such as bottle rockets and fireworks.

It is also used by the residents on Garden Springs in The Walking Dead: Survivors.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Hwachas are a 14th century indirect-fire multiple launch artillery system of Korea, where many explosive rockets are fired at a particular target en masse through the use of rocket-propelled ammunition. By the 15th century there would be shotgun-volley Hwacha variants as well, set up at chokepoints and used like a machine gun nest instead of indirect artillery fire at enemy infantry companies.

Post-Apocalypse[]

The Reapers are revealed to be in possession of a Hwacha (either handcrafted or a refurbished antique by Ancheta) when they plan on using on all the walkers and enemies that have invaded Meridian. Despite Leah's opposition, Pope also planned on using it on his own men, viewing their deaths as a worthwhile sacrifice for victory. After Pope's death, Leah fires the Hwacha at the horde and invaders, but only after her group members have left the area. The Hwacha destroys the herd completely, although Fisher is accidentally killed as well. Maggie's group manages to safely get out of the line of fire and are unharmed by the weapon.
