The Kidnapping of Hershel Rhee is a major event that occurred before AMC's The Walking Dead: Dead City and is the catalyst for the series' events.[1]
History[]
Maggie's Lie[]
After successfully tracking down Negan, Maggie brings up the raiding of the Bricks and how they were overpowered and extorted by the Burazi, stating that they would come back monthly for supplies, and as a result, a hostage got taken as collateral. Negan realizes that the hostage taken was Hershel, to which Maggie responds by saying that she tracked the Burazi up to the Hudson River but that it was too late and that they had already made it to Manhattan.
Negan asks how he figures into this situation, and Maggie tells him that the man who's got Hershel is called the Croat, but Negan shrugs in response. Knowing that Negan knows who the Croat is, Maggie clarifies that the Burazi scaled their walls and surrounded them in the dark and that right before Hershel got taken, the Croat whistled. Maggie imitates the whistle, and to Negan's surprise, it's the same whistle the Saviors used to frighten their victims.
Reality[]
While trying to escape the sewers of New York, Maggie enters a pipe and struggles from exhaustion due to the methane in the environment. As a result of the methane, Maggie recalls the true events that occurred at the Bricks in a flashback: Maggie runs after Hershel as he's abducted by the Burazi, but she is restrained by a Buraz. Once Maggie calms down, the Croat walks up to her and hands her Negan's Wanted poster, which she takes and examines: the Croat wants Negan in return for Hershel. As the Burazi and the Croat leave with Hershel, Maggie screams out in fear and anger. In reality, the Bricks never got raided, and Maggie lied to Negan and Ginny about their mission to Manhattan.
