Synopsis[]
In a flashback, a docent shows the Mona Lisa to a crowd of tourists at the Louvre. Three American teenagers playing on their phones spill a soda and Marion Genet, working as a museum janitor, is sent by her supervisor to clean it up, much to her frustration. Sabine tells Genet not to let the older woman talk to her like that, but Genet is more sympathetic, having heard that the woman's husband has cancer. Sabine urges her friend to be at an upcoming meeting on their break.
At the meeting, Sabine organizes the details of a walk-out of the janitorial staff on Saturday, but while she's prepared a pamphlet for the tourists to explain, Genet states that the tourists don't care as they are only here to take a selfie with the Mona Lisa, not worry about French health care. Sabine reminds her friend that it's a national walk-out, but Genet doesn't see the point as "we'll be on the news and the government will keep on screwing us as usual." Annoyed, Sabine states that Genet's negativity isn't helpful, and she needs to be engaged. Everyone's phones go off with an alert which someone suggests is probably another bomb threat, meaning that they'll be stuck at the Louvre for awhile.
That night, alarms go off throughout the museum as Genet is on the phone with her husband Adrien, attempting to understand what's going on as everyone is losing it. Adrien, making his way through a massive traffic jam on foot, is unable to get in the staff entrance to pick her up as the whole building is locked down. Everyone is being told to go home, lock the doors, and wait. Adrien reaches the main entrance, but the police are everywhere, preventing him from getting through so Genet makes her to the entrance so as to meet him outside. However, a National Guardsman forcefully prevents Genet from leaving as no one is being allowed in or out. Outside of the Louvre pyramid, a herd of walkers move in on fleeing civilians: it's Monument Day, the beginning of the end of the world. Through the glass of the pyramid, Adrien reassures his wife that it's going to be okay and that he loves her, a sentiment that Genet returns. Two walkers grab Adrien and devour him as Genet can only watch on and scream in horror before sobbing over the loss of her husband. Still crying, Genet walks into the empty gallery and looks at the Mona Lisa.
In the present, Carol looks at the Mona Lisa, now hanging in the dining room at Maison Mère. Genet asks what Carol sees in the painting's expression and Carol tells her Mona Lisa looks sad with Genet calling her "a woman gazed on by millions, never actually seen." However, Genet sees a secret in her smile, something withheld. Genet notices that Carol is new, and she explains that she has just arrived, claiming to be from a little east of the city, having come to Paris as a tourist 13 years ago and gotten stuck. Genet reveals that it's the original painting from the Louvre, and that the French government had protected the art rather than the people when it had all started. Genet smugly tells Carol that she knows that it's the original Mona Lisa because she's the one who stole it from the Louvre in the first place.
At a nearby table, Jean complains about the lentil soup that's being served to everybody, purposefully shoving the tray to the ground. As Agathe goes to get a mop to clean up the mess, Genet intervenes, berating the Guerrier for wasting the food and ordering him to eat it off of the floor. After a moment of hesitation, Jean complies, earning Genet the gratitude of Agathe. Genet formally introduces herself to Carol, welcoming her to Maison Mère and explaining that she has no tolerance for bullies.
The next day, the work coordinator assigns jobs to all of the volunteers, directing Carol to the kitchens and Rèmy to the stables. Rèmy translates the instructions for Carol, pleased with his assignment because his husband Julien grew up on a farm, so maybe he was sent there too. Carol doubts that she's going to find Daryl in a kitchen, and quips that the only horses that he likes are the steel kind. Rèmy explains that all of the preparations are for an attack on the Union of Hope, although nobody knows for sure where the Union is hiding out.
The two follow the Guerriers as they lead 6 prisoners to where Dr. LaFleur is set up in an outdoors area. The Guerriers kill the prisoners, and Dr. LaFleur injects them each with 20 milligrams of the Amper Serum, ordering his assistant to time the transition while another group of prisoners is similarly executed. As they watch, Rèmy tells Carol that there have been rumors of experiments being conducted by the Power of the Living and some say that that's where the burners came from: a mistake that got loose rather than a natural variant of the Wildfire Virus. Genet is trying to make a stronger breed of zombie and two of the test subjects reanimate as Ampers and rush the Guerriers, but they are quickly put down. Dr. LaFleur orders his assistant to back off the dose of Amper Serum as they need soldiers that they can control. Rèmy worries that Julien and Daryl may suffer the same fate, but Carol promises him that they'll get to Daryl and Julien first. A Guerrier catches Carol and Rèmy and orders them to leave unless they want to become test subjects themselves. Carol heads off to look for Daryl and Julien, instructing her friend to check out the stables and look busy, promising to find him later.
At the Nest, Sylvie watches the preparations for the ceremony and prays, asking for God to protect Laurent and to give Sylvie the courage to do whatever it takes to keep him safe. Gilbert brings Sylvie breakfast, and she tells him that she knows that this isn't his fault. Gilbert reassures Sylvie that her imprisonment is only temporary according to Losang and that once the boy survives the bite, all will be proven. Sylvie grabs Gilbert and slams his head into the door, knocking him out and locking him in her room as Sylvie makes her escape.
Sylvie frantically searches for Laurent, warning people that the Union is going to kill Laurent. Sylvie shrugs off Losang's attempts to grab her as Jacinta orders two approaching soldiers to escort Sylvie back to her room. Continuing to yell warnings and call for Laurent, Sylvie runs onto the parapet where she is cornered from both sides by Union soldiers. Losang tries to convince Sylvie that it's for the best, but Sylvie believes that Losang is only going to kill the boy with his ceremony instead. As the two argue, two soldiers grab Sylvie by the arms from either side, although Losang orders them to back off of her. In breaking free, Sylvie accidentally falls over the side of the parapet to her death in the courtyard below, horrifying Losang and the gathered crowd. As Jacinta comforts him, Losang sadly declares that Sylvie's faith was weak.
On the ground below the monastery, Fallou leads Daryl and Isabelle, searching for a place to climb up the wall. Daryl thinks that Isabelle will like Ohio where the winters suck, but the summers are nice with fishing in the streams and fireflies all over, confusing Isabelle as she doesn't know what fireflies are. Fallou finds a spot where they can climb, inching their way up to the top.
Inside, Laurent plays with his Rubix's Cube, and Losang informs him that it's time. Laurent is dressed in a robe, and he is instructed to be himself, and soak in the energy. Everyone is very excited about Laurent stepping into the spiritual role, which Laurent guesses he is excited by too. Preparing a drink for the boy, Losang shares that he was a shy kid who even wet his pants during his piano recital, but Laurent promises that that won't happen with him, and he wishes that Isabelle and Daryl were here. Losang pressures Laurent to drink valerian root and honey, drugging the boy in order to ensure that he's relaxed during the ceremony.
All of the Nest's residents gather in the courtyard for the ceremony. Unnoticed by anyone, Daryl, Isabelle and Fallou sneak in with Isabelle and Fallou standing amongst the crowd and Daryl on the stairs leading up to the parapet. As Losang speaks to the crowd, Jacinta and Gilbert lead a dazed and drugged Laurent in. "My friends, the time has come. From across France, from Germany, from Spain, we've come as pilgrims to be part of this community out of a shared belief of faith in what is yet to come. The journey here has been long and hard. Some have had doubts at times. It's natural to doubt. We've had to be patient to prove that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, a future where we will no longer be vulnerable to the bite of the hungry ones. Now is the time to cast doubt aside and to embrace hope, to celebrate the inspiring power of our unity and love. We are all human, and even the hungry ones, lost to us, carry with them the memory of love. So, who better to confirm our faith in Laurent than someone we've just lost, but who loved him dearly. And now, her love will deliver us all."
As Losang speaks, a cloaked and tethered walker is led out into the middle of the courtyard where Laurent is guided to meet it. Much to her friends' shock and horror, the hood is removed to reveal a zombified Sylvie who is guided towards Laurent to bite the boy. Before Sylvie can bite Laurent, Daryl shoots her in the head with an arrow, putting his friend down and quipping that the "show's over motherfucker." Daryl takes aim at Losang, but he's forced to shoot a Union soldier instead when the man tries to shoot him, giving Losang the chance to escape. As the crowd runs around in a panic, Isabelle and Fallou grab Laurent and make their escape, as does Daryl.
Daryl's group reunites, making their way through the streets of the Nest. Daryl and Fallou shoot two Union soldiers that they encounter and hide in an alcove from the searching soldiers. Daryl orders the others to go back out the way that he, Isabelle and Fallou had come in while he buys them some time, rejecting Fallou's offer to stay and help him as it will take both of the other adults to get Laurent down the wall. Grabbing Laurent, Daryl tells the boy to snap out of it as he needs Laurent to lead Isabelle and Fallou to his and Daryl's secret place where they train together, a cave in the woods. Laurent snaps out of his drugged state, recalling the location of the cave, and Daryl tells the group to give him a day and to then keep running if Daryl doesn't make it back by then. With the coast temporarily clear, Isabelle, Laurent, and Fallou make their escape while Daryl engages two Union soldiers who spot him. Avoiding the attention of a guard on top of the parapet, Fallou and Laurent make it to the outer wall and escape, but Isabelle is forced to hide when the searchers get too close.
Daryl's fight takes him down a staircase where he slams one man's head into the wall, and then strangles the other with his bow, ultimately breaking both the man's neck and his bow, forcing Daryl to abandon both the weapon and his arrows. Entering a room full of water equipment, Daryl ambushes a soldier coming down a staircase, throwing a life ring at him, knocking the man down the stairs, and then shooting the soldier with his own wrestled away gun. Daryl throws his knife into another soldier and grabs a Boat Hook as he fights a third soldier, pushing him into the way of the swinging axe of a fourth man, throwing them both to the ground. As another soldier charges, Daryl impales him in the neck with the boat hook, throws another man to the floor and uses the boat hook as a spear to impale the fourth attacking soldier as he recovers. Another man tackles Daryl through a table and briefly strangles him, but Daryl throws the man off of him and bashes his head in with a rock. Another soldier enters and the man who was thrown to the floor gets back up. Daryl impales his previous foe with the boat hook and swings the hook of a pulley into the last soldier. Daryl hides as a final soldier enters, ambushes him, and drives the man's own knife through his chin and into his brain. Taking both that knife and his own, Daryl heads up the staircase, stabbing to death a soldier at the top. Moving up through the streets of the Nest, Daryl stabs a final soldier to death before becoming cornered and being forced to surrender.
Spotting Agathe carrying a large pot, Carol grabs one of the handles, stating that she was assigned to help the other woman, commenting on how much of an asshole Jean had been the night before. Serving stew to the hungry people in a bunkroom, Carol tries to ask people if they know anything about an American named Dixon. Overhearing Carol, Stéphane, chained to a nearby pipe, says Daryl's full name and weakly reveals that he had Daryl and let him go. As a punishment, Genet had Stéphane's left pinky and ring fingers amputated. Carol asks if Stéphane knows where Daryl is now, but he's reluctant to tell her. Carol doesn't believe in coincidences and there was a reason that she found him and it's a sign. Stéphane is unconvinced, but Carol tells him that Daryl Dixon is her brother and her only surviving family. As Agathe tries to get Carol to leave as mealtime is over, Carol introduces herself and begs Stéphane to help her. Stéphane finally tells Carol that Daryl's at an island fortress on the Normandy coast and she must hurry because Daryl is a dead man if Genet finds him first.
Carol discusses what she's learned with Rèmy who tells her that it can only be Mont-Saint-Michel which is just a few hours' drive away. Carol asks Rèmy to come with her, but he can't go without Julien. Carol hugs her friend goodbye, and they wish each other luck before she leaves.
Daryl awakens tied to the floor and Losang admits that this wasn't how he'd wanted things to be. Losang had been hoping that they'd convince Daryl, his thinking would evolve, and he'd come around, but that didn't happen. Losang guesses that it must be hard to live without a semblance of faith, without an organizing principle, nothing to cling to, and existence simply spent reaching and reacting. "A man alone. It's a sad state." Daryl orders Losang to fuck off to his amusement, and Losang guesses that it's easy to reject faith when you live only for yourself. However, Losang has dedicated his life to a community of people that he has a responsibility to protect. "Faith and hope, our oxygen and water, elements crucial to our survival. And over time, our reserves, they've run low. Laurent will replenish them. The public display of his light will give our people the strength to continue on in the darkness. I meditated. I prayed on it. And I realized it's our love for Laurent. That's precisely why he's being called on to take this leap. Because only by risking everything can we find the true meaning of faith." Daryl asks what will happen if Losang is wrong and Losang tells him that there would be no point in going on if he's wrong. Losang again demands to know where the boy is, but Daryl remains silent.
Carol knocks out a Guerrier from behind and takes his gun, but none of the vehicles that he was guarding have any keys in them. Spotting some horses nearby, Carol nervously steals one and rides away as the Guerrier begins to regain consciousness. Carol rides towards the exit, but she finds it blocked by a large number of Guerriers led by Sabine, forcing her to surrender.
Sabine leads Carol to Genet's office where Rèmy and Julien are sitting, Rèmy having betrayed Carol in exchange for the return of his husband. Genet states that information is a commodity and Rèmy apologizes to Carol as this was the only way that he could think of to save Julien, guessing that she would've done the same thing for Daryl. Genet tells the two men that Sabine will take them both back to Paris and drop them wherever they like, and they leave with Sabine.
Left alone with Carol, Genet warns her against trying anything as there are two Guerriers right outside, so Carol might as well sit down. Genet pours Carol some wine and explains to her that they keep a little vineyard behind the mill. Genet wants to know what Carol wants, threatening to assign her to the Atelier -- the place where the experiments are taking place -- instead. Carol asks about the experiments, and Genet explains that they're "creating a new subtype of hungry ones, more directable warriors. They will help bring peace back to the world." Carol quips that she's heard about the "war to end all wars" before, and Genet demands to know the truth about how she got here. Carol admits that she had landed two days ago from America after manipulating an innocent man into letting her fly in his plane under the false pretense of looking for her daughter. On the way, they had to stop in Greenland where Ash was almost used as a sperm donor and Carol was nearly murdered by insane environmentalists.
Highly amused by the story, Genet asks why she wants to find Daryl, and Carol claims that she had come to France to kill him. Genet sympathetically guesses that Daryl must've done something terrible to her, noting that they all need a raison d'etre. Carol states that Genet can't imagine what she's done to get this far, and Genet reassures her that she understands. "These pains we carry, we women need to let them go. Men seem to have no problem doing that. But we have to forgive ourselves. For all the loses," states Genet, and Carol agrees that they can try, although it clearly isn't that easy. The two women share a drink, and Genet tells Carol that Daryl has aligned himself with a group of religious zealots, surprising Carol as Daryl isn't really the aligning type. Genet thinks that Carol has helped them to find the Union's headquarters and hands Carol Azlan's watch depicting Mont-Saint-Michel. Genet will organize a convoy in the morning for an attack and if Carol wants to kill Daryl herself, then Genet will take her to him. Accepting her offer, Carol returns the watch to Genet.
A beaten Daryl is dragged into a cell area -- a converted shower room -- by a Union soldier and chained up. Daryl remains defiant in the face of more torture the next morning for the location of Laurent. On a table outside of the jail lies Daryl's knife and Daryl's Morning Star.
Genet's convoy stops outside of the Louvre, now in ruins, partially reclaimed by nature, and overrun by a small herd. Looking at the ruined pyramid, Genet tells Carol that she used to work at the Louvre as a janitor. At first, she was on nights, almost alone, sweeping the floors of galleries full of religious paintings and wondered why the greatest artists felt compelled to depict the same violent imagery over and over again. When the undead came, Genet and the others were locked in for a week which was when the paintings began to make sense to her. "There was one in particular. Le Deluge. A desperate family hangs in peril over a raging flood. And I realized all these scenes of apocalypse, they want to make sense of the chaos and destruction that humanity brings upon itself. The fantasy that there's a higher power that can make things better. Prayers didn't help us. Not then and not now." Genet signals the convoy to start moving again and Carol tells her that everyone needs hope. However, Genet feels that religion isn't about hope but control and keeping the masses in line. Carol admits that it can sometimes turn into that, and Genet tells her that the Union is deluded by an opiate of hope, and thinks that the masses, the small and unseen, are stupid, that their fairy tales can control the masses. Genet intends to show the Union that they're wrong.
In a flashback, a despondent Genet looks at Le Deluge and wanders through the galleries as people sit on the floor, shell shocked. one well-dressed woman sobbing as a man comforts her. Genet stops and looks around at all of the survivors, huddled in the Louvre.
Fallou joins Laurent in the cave, telling the boy that he had waited for as long as he could, but there was no sign of Daryl and Isabelle. If Isabelle got out, Fallou knows that she'll find them in Paris. Fallou reassures Laurent that none of this is his fault, but Sylvie's gone now, and Isabelle may be as well because of a made-up story about him. The worst part about it for the boy is that he had liked how everyone believed that he was special. Fallou promises Laurent that he is special, and some things are true because you believe them, and "the truth is in the way believing makes it easier to live." However, Laurent is not comforted, pointing out that belief wouldn't make him survive a walker bite. Fallou acknowledges that Losang took things too far, but that isn't on Laurent, everyone believed him. However, Laurent reminds Fallou of the one person who never believed Losang about how special he was: Daryl.
At night, a beaten and weak Isabelle is led into the jail and chained up in the cell next to Daryl. Isabelle tells Daryl that she was separated from the others, but Laurent and Fallou got away. Daryl tells Isabelle that he didn't say anything to the Union, and Isabelle confirms that she didn't either. Daryl reassures her that Laurent will be fine, and they'll catch up to him, but they should get their strength back up so that they can escape the next day. Using her foot, Isabelle moves a small broken shower drain grate and collects it. Wanting to hear Daryl's voice, Isabelle asks him to tell her a story. "There was this guy. And he left home, looking for something. Wasn't even sure what it was. And he found himself far, far away from home. And he couldn't get back. That's all he ever cared about, getting back. He didn't care about anything or anyone. Then one day, something changed. Dépaysant," tells Daryl in a changed version of his original story. Isabelle notes that change is good, and asks Daryl to describe the fireflies to her which he compares to Tinkerbell. Daryl thinks that Laurent is really going to like it when they get back home to America where Laurent can go to school and be like a normal kid. Daryl and Isabelle can do whatever she wants like sleep late, take long walks, and watch the sun go down by the river which Isabelle thinks sounds like a dream. The two hold hands, and Daryl acknowledges that Isabelle was right: he did find something in France. Isabelle tells Daryl in French that she loves him and Daryl grips her hand tighter, although he doesn't respond to her verbally.
Losang and two soldiers enter the jail and Losang tells Isabelle that they need to talk, but Daryl tells him that Isabelle has nothing to say to him. Losang knows that Isabelle is in pain and he wants to he help her deal with whatever confusion she's feeling, asking her to come with him and pray on it together. Losang asks for a chance to explain, feeling that they both deserve it after all that they've been through together, but Isabelle refuses. Nevertheless, Losang has one soldier unchain and take her. Daryl demands to know where Losang is taking Isabelle as she doesn't know anything, but Losang tells him that Isabelle knows that the Union has a mission here and a greater purpose. Daryl admits that he knows where Laurent and is and offers to take Losang to him, but Losang states that "Isabelle has always had an open mind and heart. You sadly are beyond hope," and leaves. A guard who remains behind hits Daryl in the face with the butt of his rifle when Daryl persists, claiming that Laurent is in Provence, and he frantically calls after Isabelle as she's taken away.
The Power of the Living convoy drives out onto the tide lands near the Nest and stops at a distance that's close, but far enough away to avoid detection. Sabine is concerned that the plan is rushed, but Genet just instructs her to make sure that everyone is ready. Genet tells Carol that they're rallying the troops and to stay close as this is history. Dozens of people gather and Genet tells the selectees that they have been chosen for this mission as they are about to become her most devoted, most ferocious, and most devoted fighting unit. Genet salutes them and offers her deepest gratitude as so many years of research, patience and commitment have brought them to this day. Right here and now they will be making the noblest sacrifice as they crush the Union's tyranny of false hope. In the name of liberty, equality and fraternity they will be remembered as heroes.
Spotting Dr. LaFleur reading the Amper Serum and a dart gun, Carol confronts Genet, realizing that she is going to be turning the selectees into Ampers for the battle, which she confirms, stating that they're doing it for the greater good. "We've been training for months. We're ready. The question is, are you? I'm giving you what you asked for. You're gonna kill your friend." Two Guerriers grab Carol and place her into the crowd next to Jean as Genet and her forces prepare to begin their attack on the Nest.

- The title of the episode, "L'Invisible", is French and means "the invisible".
- According to Losang, the Nest has people who have pilgrimaged from Germany and Spain as well as from across France.
- The Episode Insider for this episode reveals that they filmed Genet's flashback scenes at the actual Louvre and that it took about a year to plan and be able to shoot at the Louvre. They only three available days in the year to shoot and there were many different considerations, especially around the pyramid, because it's a sensitive place. Things like putting blood there was a first for the museum and they had to close off the perimeter, making it exceptional overall for everyone to shoot at the Louvre.
- Genet's actress, Anne Charrier, stated that filming the scenes in the Louvre has been her favorite moment filming the show so far.
- In the Episode Insider, it was stated that they had always wanted Sylvie to have a heroic story where she gets killed trying to save Laurent and while figuring out the story around the ceremony and the test, David Zabel came up with the idea that Sylvie would be perfect to use as a special walker for it if she died at the right time. Laïka Blanc-Francard was really excited to play a zombie on The Walking Dead and enjoyed the experience. She felt that Sylvie dying trying to save Laurent was the best way for her to die.
- It took around two hours to apply Laïka's zombie makeup.
- The Commonwealth is confirmed to be in Ohio during Daryl and Isabelle's conversation near the beginning of the episode. Previously this was only indicated by the plaque in Union Square and the Ohio flag flying.

Goofs[]
- Despite the fact that Sylvie died due to a broken neck, she is still able to walk around.
- As explained in the Episode Insider, this was a deliberate plot oversight as they wanted a "special walker" to be used during Laurent's ceremony.
- This exact same goof happened in "Better Angels" with Randall Culver after Shane Walsh killed him by snapping Randall's neck.
- When Sylvie falls to her death, she makes a 180 degree turn. When her corpse was shown, she was lying the other way around.
