Overview

Larry is a spiteful, irritable, crude, and curmudgeonly old man. Though he mainly cares about the safety of his daughter and generally has good intentions, his loud, cantankerous, obstreperous, and judgmental attitude causes him to be a thorn in the side of most of the group. He usually talks in an aggressive, yelling manner and always finds something to berate others about. He is shown to be cold and callous in the face of survival, urging the group to kill or throw Duck out, a 10-year-old boy, after believing he had been bitten.

Larry has a particular hatred for Lee due to knowing his past as a convicted murderer. Even if the player chooses to treat Larry with kindness, he will still treat Lee with contempt. In the drugstore, when Lee saves Larry's life by getting into the pharmacy for his pills, he is ungrateful and tries to leave him for the walkers. If the player decides to give Larry food, he gives little reaction and remains unappreciative.

According to Lilly, Larry became the way he is due to the amount of loss he suffered throughout his life, including the loss of his wife. He was very strict in parenting Lilly, even at one point cutting off the electricity in their house to teach Lilly not to waste it. A brief glimpse into his soft side can be seen when he flirts with Brenda St. John. However, this quickly comes to an end when the St. Johns' true nature is revealed.

Despite his faults, Larry does genuinely care for his daughter and also for Clementine. He tells Lee to stay away from Lilly, and that he should watch himself if anything were to happen to her or Clementine. However, his aggressiveness would be his ultimate downfall. Despite being told to stop, he angrily pounds on the door of the St. Johns meat locker, only for him to suffer a heart attack. Believing him to be beyond saving despite Lilly's attempts to perform CPR on him, Kenny smashes his head with a salt lick to prevent him from reanimating.

Pre-Apocalypse

Georgia, United States

Not much is known about Larry's life prior to or as the outbreak began. All that is known about him is that he was a retired U.S Army commander who had a history of heart problems, and that, based on the shirt he wears during A New Day, he likely enjoyed bowling. Larry married a woman, and together they had a daughter, Lilly, who is also a survivor of the apocalypse. According to Lilly, Larry went through a great deal of suffering and loss during his life, including coping with the loss of his wife, keeping her wedding band in his pocket at all times to remember his late wife. Lilly says that when she was little, Larry would have very strict rules around the house and become angry about anything being wasted. Lilly recounts how she used to leave the light on, and no matter how many times her dad told her to stop it, she never learned, until one day Larry became fed up and cut the house's electricity for a day to teach her a lesson. Lilly never left a light on again.

Larry would end up being one of the only two people to know in the group he was part of during the start of the outbreak that fellow group member Lee Everett had a murder conviction, most likely seeing the case on the news, before the apocalypse.

Post-Apocalypse

Season One

"A New Day"

Larry, alongside his daughter Lilly, Glenn, Doug, and Carley, has been holed up in a drug store. When Lee, Clementine, Kenny, Katjaa, and Duck arrive at the drugstore, Larry is seen yelling at Carley for disobeying the command given by his daughter to keep the door shut at all times. He looks at Duck, who has been covered with walker blood. He accuses Duck of being bitten and urges the rest of the group to either kill Duck or throw him out, and is either supported or resisted by Lee.

Side with Larry: Larry is appreciative of Lee's support and tries to throw Duck out again. Katjaa cleans Duck and confirms that he hasn't been bitten. Kenny then yells at him that he is fine, leading to Larry apologizing half-heartedly for his actions. Lilly will then ask him to sit down out of concern for his health, to which Larry calmly agrees.

Side with Kenny: Lee shouts viciously at Larry, asserting he will fight the man himself if it means he can save Duck. Alternatively, he calmly orders Kenny to knock Larry out, but Larry easily overpowers him, knocking him out with a single punch to the jaw.

Carley shoots a walker who attacks Clementine, and the walkers outside begin to pound on the doors. After the walkers disperse, Larry begins to chastise Carley for firing her gun and attracting them. Due to the added stress, he has a flare-up and collapses to the floor. While talking to Lilly, Lee mentions Larry's temper, causing the man to curse him. Larry also periodically cries out in pain due to his condition as his daughter tries to comfort him.

After the group acquires nitroglycerin pills to treat his condition, he makes a quick recovery. The group's efforts set off the store's alarm, and walkers begin to invade the storm. After Lee is forced to choose between Carley or Doug, Larry will angrily scold whichever one of them survived for being too traumatized to do anything before telling them to move. Even if he was supported by Lee earlier, Larry will knock Lee to the floor and leave him to be devoured by walkers. However, Lee is saved by Kenny.

He is later seen at the Travelier Motel and confronts Lee. Larry reveals that he knows about Lee's past and threatens that if anything happens to Lilly or Clementine, he will tell everyone about Lee's secret.

"Starved For Help"

Larry has spent 3 months with the motel survivor group. When Lee, Kenny, and Mark bring back Ben Paul and Travis or David Parker (Determinant), he is furious, as there are now more mouths to feed. While Lee is rationing food, he can be among the few to be fed. Lee can also give his axe to Larry to help with the makeshift wall. Doing so will make Larry help save Lee when he is attacked by a reanimated Travis/David, but only if Lee saved Doug in the previous episode. If Lee saved Carley, she will shoot the walker instead, regardless of who Lee gave the axe.

He later makes his way to the St. John's Dairy Farm along with the others. He tells Lee and Lilly to lighten up and give the St. John Family a chance, too concerned about his hunger to worry about anything else. His attitude is considerably lighter when he is on the farm, claiming the change in scenery helps. He takes particular interest in Brenda St. John, flirting with her and sticking up for her when Lee accuses the family of cannibalism. When this accusation is proved true, he is put in a meat locker with Kenny, Lee, Clementine, and Lilly.

Larry pounds on the door and demands that the family release them in fury. Although Lee, Kenny, and Lilly all plead for him to calm down, he refuses to listen, and the increasing stress causes him to suffer a massive heart attack. Larry falls to the floor unconscious and stops breathing. Lilly immediately performs CPR in an attempt to save him. However, Kenny is convinced that Larry is dead. Kenny urges Lee and Lilly to kill Larry. Both plead with Lee to help, and Lee is forced to decide to either try to revive Larry or assist Kenny in killing him. Regardless of Lee's choice, Kenny picks up a salt lick and drops it on Larry's head, crushing his brain and killing him instantly.

When the group cannot find a way out of the locker, Lee searches Larry's corpse for coins and can find both his wallet and his wife's wedding ring in the process. Lee uses the coins to unscrew an air conditioner, allowing Clementine to go through the air vent and unlock the door from the other side. Larry's body is left behind when the survivors leave the dairy and is possibly devoured by the oncoming walkers.

Death

Killed By

An enraged Larry suffers a heart attack after being held captive in the meat locker by the St. John Family. Larry falls to the ground unresponsive. Lilly attempts to resuscitate him, although a fearful Kenny believes him to be dead, worried about him potentially reanimating.

  • Lee Everett (Caused, Before Reanimation or Zombified, Determinant)
  • Kenny (Before Reanimation or Zombified)

Having previously learned that the brain has to be destroyed in order to prevent reanimation, Kenny tries to convince Lee to help him prevent Larry from reanimating, even as Lilly insists he can be saved. If Lee agrees, he restrains Lilly while Kenny grabs a nearby salt lick. If Lee does not agree, Kenny either forces him out of the way or simply goes and gets the salt lick while Lee attempts chest compressions. Either way, Kenny drops the heavy object on Larry's head, instantly pulverizing the upper half of his skull. Whether Larry was still alive at the time or in the process of reanimation remains unknown.

Killed Victims

This list shows the victims Larry has killed:

  • David Parker (Zombified, Determinant)
  • Travis (Zombified, Determinant)
  • Himself (Caused, Alive, Accidental)
  • Possibly numerous counts of enemy combatants (Pre-Apocalypse)
  • Numerous counts of zombies

Trivia

  • Last words: "Oh, God..."
  • Larry has ischaemic heart disease, which requires him to take nitroglycerin tablets.
  • In "Starved For Help", Lee has to decide who to give food to. 42% of players choose to feed Larry. The fourth most out of any character, only behind Clementine, Duck, and Mark.[1]
  • Three months into the outbreak, Larry carries two Georgia quarters and a dime in his pocket and is shown to still carry his wallet and his wife's wedding ring, likely as a memento of her.
  • Larry's death is ironic, for numerous reasons:
    • In "A New Day", he voted that they must smash Duck's head in. Later, in "Starved For Help", Larry gets his head crushed by Duck's father, Kenny.
    • At the beginning of "Starved For Help", Mark states that he "wouldn't want to be stuck in a room with him." This foreshadows the event where Lee, Clementine, Lilly, and Kenny are all locked in a meat locker with Larry.
    • He states moments before he dies that Lee is "stuck with him", and that he plans to be around long after Lee dies and be the one to put down Lee if he ever reanimated. (Determinant)
    • The two people who contribute to his prevented reanimation are members of the group that he wanted to throw out, Lee for his past, and Kenny for protecting his son. (Determinant)
  • Both Larry and his daughter betray Lee in some way.
    • Larry will ungratefully leave Lee to die in the drugstore (even if he sides with him in the argument before his heart attack) when walkers break in, due to his past as a convicted felon, despite Lee saving him by obtaining his medicine.
      • He also gets into a fight with Kenny when he prevents Larry from evicting his son, Duck. (Determinant)
  • Despite being the oldest member of the original Macon survivors by nearly 20 years and having a heart condition, Larry is shown to be the physically strongest survivor in the group, being able to knock both Lee and Kenny to the ground with only one punch. (Determinant)
    • His strength is also shown during Jolene's video diary at the end of Episode 2, when he and Mark are seen moving a couch. Mark struggles, dropping his side, while Larry easily holds on to his end.
  • If Lee tries to revive Larry and gives him four or more chest compressions, his mouth will move on the fourth compression, right before Kenny drops the salt lick on his head; however, it is not made clear if this means that he was still alive at that time or if he was beginning to reanimate. Interestingly, once the salt lick connects to Larry's head, his final breath sounds like a walker growl, suggesting that he was beginning to reanimate. Although it is possible that his last breath was gargled by the blood, or it really was just his last breath.
  • Larry is one of the survivors whom Lee can choose to give the rations to. Depending on the type of ration that he is given or if he is fed first, he responds differently. Out of those survivors, Larry is the only one with three different responses.
    • If Lee feeds him first, he'll tell him that he should shove it up his ass, but he is too hungry. Strangely, he doesn't take the food from him, unlike the other options.
    • If Lee feeds him later and gives him the beef jerky or cheese and crackers, he'll say that Lilly needs to stop worrying about him so much.
    • If Lee chooses to give him an apple, he tells him that he hopes that doesn't make them friends. Lee points out that he could've given Larry nothing, but Larry will ignore Lee.
    • No matter if you try to be more helpful or kind to Larry or try to side with Lilly in episode 2, Larry will still hate Lee.
  • Terence McGovern is credited as Larry in "Long Road Ahead", even though Larry does not appear.
  • Larry is the first character Terence McGovern has voiced, the second being Gary.
  • If the player sides with Larry or remains silent during the scene where Kenny and Larry argue about Duck being bitten, Katjaa will eventually finish cleaning the muck off of Duck and find that he indeed was not bitten, and Larry will end up apologizing for his actions.
  • As of Season 4, Larry is the only main character from Season One to not have any potential non-canon deaths.
  • Larry has two tattoos on his left arm, which are both briefly seen in the first episode.
    • On his bicep, there is a tattoo of an eagle, which is presumably in reference to his history with the military.
    • Another is on his forearm and is a scorpion, which has an unclear meaning or connection to his backstory.
      • This could be a reference to the fable of The Scorpion and the Frog; despite the Frog's generosity in the face of danger, the Scorpion still betrays him. Similarly, Larry will be actively hostile even if Lee tries to be friendly with him.
  • Larry raised his daughter in a military-esque fashion with a focus on discipline, as revealed in Season 4 when Lilly tells a story about him.
  • During early character development, Larry was originally more compassionate and admitted that he was wrong in believing that Duck was bitten more often than he did in the final version of the game, which was only once, depending on which choices you made.[2]
  • Larry is the only main character of Season 1 who did not kill a living person on-screen directly/caused, regardless of the players' choices.
  • There is an unused voice line during Larry's death scene of him apologizing to Lilly for not being able to protect her.[3]
  • Larry is the first antagonist to appear in the Telltale Series.
