"Le Paradis Pour Toi" is the fourth episode of the second season of AMC's The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. It is the tenth episode of the series overall. It premiered on October 20, 2024. It was written by David Zabel & Jason Richman and directed by Michael Slovis.
Plot[]
Pouvoir attacks the Nest and Losang and Isabelle confront each other.
Synopsis[]
On the tidelands near the Nest, the Power of the Living prepares for battle, rolling two cannons past the lined-up selectees. Carol steps behind Jean for cover as a large machine gun is uncovered in the back of a truck. The crowd panics but are held at bay by Guerriers as Genet orders for them all to be shot, but not in the head. The Guerriers manning the machine gun open fire, killing all but Carol who throws herself to the ground and plays dead behind Jean's body. Dr. LaFleur and several others quickly move in and begin firing darts full of Amper Serum into everyone before they can reanimate. Although one hits Carol, she quickly manages to pull it out before she can be injected. An ATV drives up with Stéphane Codron -- a bandage covering his left eye -- chained to the back of it to be used as a lure for the Ampers.
The selectees all reanimate as Ampers and move towards Stéphane, the closest living thing, before one notices Carol. Getting up, Carol quickly hijacks the ATV and drives towards the Nest with Stéphane, chased by the Ampers. Carol is forced to stop due to the gate to the Nest being sealed shut, but the Guerriers blow it open with a cannon. Carol drives into the Nest and races through gathered Union soldiers, followed by the Ampers who quickly fall upon and devour the surprised soldiers with the Guerriers moving in behind the Ampers. Finally, at the top of a hill, Carol hits a soldier and comes to a stop. Grabbing the soldier's gun and hatchet, Carol shoots an approaching Amper and begins cutting Stéphane loose. A Guerrier approaches, but is attacked from behind by another Amper. Carol finishes cutting Stéphane loose and shoots the Amper. "Go on, up the mountain. Tell Dixon I did it for the boy," orders Stéphane. He grabs the fallen Guerrier's sword and rushes into a crowd of Ampers, attacking them with the sword and his dangling chains as Carol moves further into the Nest on foot.
Isabelle is untied by a Union soldier as Losang apologizes to her for it having come to this, but Isabelle needs to tell them where Laurent is. "When we first me, Laurent was 6. I'd heard of him, a child torn from the womb of a hungry one. From a horrific ending... a miraculous beginning. We met with the boy, we evaluated his gifts, we... found him to be special. As Père Jean had said he would be. As you said he would be. For years, the good father and I stayed in touch as best we could. And then, when it seemed time, we summoned the boy here," explains Losang. Isabelle asks if Losang means it was time for Laurent or Losang, but he claims that it was time for them all to be free again. However, Isabelle now believes that the true reason is that Losang feared losing control over the Union and he needed the boy to solidify it.
Losang apologizes that her will has weakened, and he wants to fortify her and everyone who's feeling tired and hopeless. Isabelle rebukes Losang that his actions aren't strength, but rather desperate, misguided and savage. While Losang thinks that she's simply parroting Daryl's beliefs, Isabelle tells him that it's herself talking, a part of her that was asleep until she met Daryl, "the part that doesn't believe in false prophets anymore." While Laurent is special, thinking and feeling in a way that humanity needs in order to survive, he's still human, meaning that Laurent can bleed, be hurt, and die, like Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha.
Jacinta argues that this is a waste of time, but Losang cuts her off. Losang tells Isabelle that they're going to offer the flock proof of their faith, it must be done, and so he needs her to tell him where the boy is. A guard rushes in with the news that the gate has been breached and intruders are moving up the mountain. Seeing that Losang is beyond reason, Isabelle takes advantage of the distraction to slash him across the face with the broken drain cover that she had grabbed. As Jacinta and the Union soldier restrain Isabelle, the furious Losang grabs a knife off of a table and stabs Isabelle in the abdomen. As Losang stares in shock at what he did, another man enters with the news that Genet's army is in the village. Grabbing Losang, Jacinta departs with him and the Union soldiers to defend the Nest, leaving Isabelle lying on the floor.
Carol sneaks through the Nest, hiding as a fleeing father and daughter run past her. Killing two Nest guards, two Guerriers chase after the pair. Catching the Guerriers' attention, Carol throws a knife into one and shoots the other, saving the family's lives. Carol sneaks up on a third Guerrier, knocks him out with a kick to the face, and takes the man's knife.
Still alive, Isabelle regains consciousness shortly after their departure and stumbles through the chaos, leaving behind a trail of blood. Outside, an Amper rushes towards Isabelle, but it is shot from behind at the last second by Carol. Carol helps Isabelle to sit down and examines her wound, noting that it looks pretty clean which is a good thing, and grabs some cloth to hold to the wound and a blanket to keep the shivering woman warm. Introducing herself, Carol explains that she's looking for a friend of hers from America. Surprised, Isabelle realizes exactly who her savior is and who she's looking for.
Chased by an Amper, a terrified young man runs into the jail area and locks himself in for protection before it runs off towards some men approaching from behind. The young man turns around to find Daryl still chained up behind him and Daryl raises his shackles, looking at the keys in the young man's hand. Released, Daryl grabs his knife and morning star off of the table outside and fights his way through the battling Union soldiers, Ampers, and Guerriers outside. On the other side of hallway stands Carol, having been told where to find Daryl by Isabelle and shot a few of the combatants herself. The two old friends embrace each other, sobbing.
Carol leads Daryl to Isabelle who is barely still alive. Daryl desperately tries to tend to Isabelle, but the dying woman already knows that it's too late. "Just... Just make sure he's okay. Make sure he's taken care of. And that he knows I'm always with him," begs Isabelle, which Daryl promises to do. "I can see them. The fireflies. They're so beautiful," says Isabelle as she dies. Daryl breaks down in tears and Carol places a comforting hand on his shoulder, drawing her knife to ensure that Isabelle doesn't reanimate.
Daryl and Carol walk away from the Nest which is partially on fire with screams and gunfire still echoing. Daryl frantically leads them across the tidelands as Carol tells him that she's got somebody ready to take them home, a pilot with a plane back in Paris. Everyone misses Daryl and Connie, Judith and the others will be thrilled to have him come back. However, Daryl ignores Carol as he continues moving with purpose, so she asks Daryl who Isabelle was talking about him taking care of, but Daryl ignores her questions.
In the Nest, Losang fights a Guerrier with his staff, overpowering the man as Jacinta struggles with another Guerrier nearby. Before Losang can finish off his opponent, he is interrupted by Genet who enters with Sabine and a number of other Guerriers. "Give up. The Nest is ours," orders Genet, and Losang reluctantly surrenders, ending the battle.
The next day, Daryl and Carol reach the cave that he had sent Laurent and Fallou to. The cave is abandoned, and Carol suggests that they should just head back to Paris, but Daryl refuses to go without the kid. Daryl explains that Laurent was with Fallou, and they were supposed to meet him here. Daryl discovers that the ashes of the fire are cold, but Laurent has hidden his Rubix Cube in a hidden compartment in the cave wall for Daryl to find. Attempting to calm down her friend, Carol tells Daryl that they'll find the kid together and they leave to follow Laurent and Fallou's trail.
Walking down a road, Daryl and Carol guess that they can't be too far behind Laurent and Fallou. Carol asks Daryl about Isabelle, and Daryl admits that they helped each other out, and Daryl doesn't think that he'd be here without her. Daryl asks if Carol and her pilot had just loaded up the plane and fly all of the way from Maine. Carol reveals that they had stopped in Greenland to refuel, although that's a whole other story. Daryl asks if Carol had just left on a hunch, leaving everybody back home, and she tells him that she just flew halfway around the world on a feeling. Carol points out that Daryl was supposed to come back, and he tells her that he was trying. Looking at a ruined castle off in the distance, Carol quips that they're not in Ohio anymore for sure. "Dépaysant," Daryl says looking at it, explaining to Carol that it's a French word meaning a place that makes you see things differently. Carol is amused by Daryl speaking French now, commenting that the two of them here is crazy, although Daryl calls it stupid. Carol tells Daryl that she had met a guy named Codron at Maison Mère who had helped her out, saying that he knew Daryl. Daryl realizes that Genet -- who Carol calls a piece of work -- got Stéphane after their last meeting and asks if Stéphane had helped Carol to find him. Carol confirms it, passing along Stéphane's message that he did it for the boy.
Genet interrogates Losang, demanding to know where the boy is and if he's with the American. Losang tells Genet that she won the battle and to leave Laurent out of it, however, she intends to win the war. Losang rebukes Genet that their war should be with the dead, hopelessness and despair, not with an innocent child. Genet states that she can see how Losang has lulled the sheep into submission with empathy and concern, and asks him if he thinks that all of this time, she's been relying on only the truth. Genet reveals that they had found Isabelle and that she's dead when Losang tells Genet that Isabelle won't tell them anything. Losang is shocked to learn that he had killed Isabelle, and Genet asks if she was hiding the boy and fearing what Losang would do to him. Losang states that Isabelle had nothing to fear, but admits that he fears for his people and the future.
"When the boy escaped, I feared that God was protecting him from me. I doubted myself, even my faith. But I don't anymore. Because I realize now that God was protecting him from you." Genet derisively asks if the American works for God, but Losang states that everyone serves God whether or not they believe, even Genet. Genet states that if she finds the boy, it will prove that God is on her side, and orders Sabine and the Capo to scour the countryside for Laurent as he couldn't have gotten far. Genet tells Losang not to worry so much about the future as he doesn't have one and departs, leaving Losang and Jacinta locked up in the Nest's jail.
As they make their way through the countryside, Carol practices her high school French, recalling how her French teacher Madame Bergeron would crack the students' knuckles with a ruler if they missed a verb. Bergeron was also Carol's math teacher, another subject that she wasn't very good at. Carol has never really gone anywhere before, recalling how her father had an old globe when she was a kid next to the TV which Carol would spin around, thinking how easy it would be to see the world. Instead, Carol became a mother and that was her world.
Daryl recalls how Carol had told him on the radio that someone came back, and he asks who she was talking about. "It wasn't a person. It was a feeling. Everything at Commonwealth just got so quiet. All that old stuff came back like ghosts. So, I got out of there and I was worried about you," explains Carol. Daryl notices the tracks of more than two people, meaning that someone caught up to Laurent and Fallou.
At night, Daryl and Carol walk down a road that is lined with walkers that are caught in various traps. The two enter a large plantation house and follow the sound the song "Le Paradis Pour Toi" to a dining room where an elderly couple is sitting down for dinner. Theo addresses Daryl by name, mistaking Carol for Isabelle. Didi introduces herself and her husband and Theo explains that Laurent had told them that Daryl would be coming.
Sitting down to dinner together, Theo explains that he was out foraging for white mushrooms when he saw Laurent and Fallou. The two were hungry and tired, Fallou was very nice to them and Laurent helped Didi with the dishes. Theo had helped the two to find a working car to drive to Paris, and he offers to let Daryl look through his collection of cars for one that Daryl can make work to drive himself and Carol to Paris. Carol agrees to wait until the morning, pointing out to Daryl that it's pitch black outside currently.
In the morning, Daryl looks through the cars as Theo explains that he grew up on the plantation as a fourth generation member of his family. Theo's family sold carrots to the Germans during World War I, Nazis in World War II, and American soldiers after that. "Armies come and go. We're still here." Daryl finally finds a car that's in good shape and just needs a battery that holds a charge as well as a few hoses. Theo knows a place to find those things, and he offers to take Daryl once he gets his walking shoes.
In the kitchen, Carol helps Didi to chop up vegetables and the old woman tells Carol that she misses young people, all of the children having grown up and left a long time ago. As a result, it was nice having Laurent around, even if only for a day. Laurent is very fond of Isabelle and Daryl, having gone on and on about them. Carol acknowledges that Daryl's a really good influence and Didi, still unaware that Carol isn't Isabelle, reveals that Laurent thinks that Daryl loves Isabelle but won't say it because if he says it, then Daryl won't be able to leave. While Carol deflects it as being a little more complicated than that, Didi tells her that it isn't to a child or to the old woman who knows how rare love is.
Carol asks about Didi and Theo, but Didi reveals that Theo actually isn't her husband. Sadly, Didi tells Carol that her husband, children, and grandchildren are all dead. Carol is surprised as the old woman seems to be so happy and Didi admits that she wasn't for a long time and that like Daryl, she was torn between the world that she lost and the world that she found. However, one must look for a way to keep living and while it's not so easy sometimes, reasons are everywhere. Daryl and Theo enter and the elderly couple dance together to "Le Paradis Pour Toi" as Daryl and Carol watch, smiling.
Daryl, Carol, and Theo, the latter of whom Daryl is pushing in a wheelbarrow, make their way through a nearby village with walkers -- formerly the elderly residents of the various houses -- locked behind the gates of the various houses. Carol comments that the place gives her the creeps as the walkers have walkers. Theo greets Madame Ducasse who was a kind lady and a good dentist who is responsible for Theo still having most of his teeth, the baker Monsieur Roux, and Monsieur Toussaint explaining that this whole street has died. As there's only old people left in the village, it's too hard to bury someone when they die. Instead, they lock the gate and pay respect when they pass by. Finally arriving at their destination, Theo has Daryl and Carol stay outside while he goes in to talk first.
Carol tells Daryl that, according to Didi, Laurent idolizes him. Laurent made a big impression on the old woman, and it sounds like he's going to do really well at the Commonwealth. Daryl suggests that since the boy has friends in Paris, it might be better if he stays there with them. Carol points out that Laurent is Daryl's responsibility, but Daryl isn't sure that he wants that responsibility. Carol asks about the kids back home, reminding Daryl how he had taken care of Judith and R.J. before leaving, but Daryl just calls it different. Daryl admits that he doesn't want to lose Laurent, and Carol asks if Daryl is afraid that he'll end up like her, but Daryl states that he's not afraid of that. Theo interrupts the argument to bring them inside of the house.
In the garage, Daryl uncovers Jean-Luc's car which is still in great condition and will serve well for their needs. After confirming that they're Americans, Jean-Luc tells Daryl and Carol that he likes America and his brother lives in Florida where Jean-Luc and his wife Louise go to visit them every winter. His memory clearly addled by age, Jean-Luc suggests a place for Daryl and Carol to stay in Florida and to put everything back by Monday as Jean-Luc must have the car to go to work. Theo explains that the old man forgets everything, even about the walkers, something that Theo wishes he could do too.
Using the parts taken from Jean-Luc's car, Daryl and Carol work together on fixing Theo's car as Didi bring them something to drink. Daryl asks the old woman about some ethanol that Theo had mentioned having, and Didi offers to get it for them from the barn. Going to the barn to help Didi, Carol is consumed by her memories of a zombified Sophia emerging from the barn on Hershel's farm. Didi notices Carol's distress, and Carol reveals that she had lost her daughter. Didi somberly tells Carol that she got through her loss and Carol will too, hugging Carol, before they go into the barn together.
Later, Daryl and Carol bicker as they try to get the car started, amusing Theo who compares them to an old married couple. The two quickly hide in the car as a Power of the Living jeep approaches and one of the Guerriers interrogates Theo. Despite Carol's worries that the Guerriers are going to kill Theo and Didi, they leave peacefully after Didi brings them out some food.
Preparing for bed that night, Carol guesses that Genet won the battle and gives Daryl a figurine that Judith had made for him. Carol reveals that Judith didn't want her to go, but a part of the girl knew that Carol had to go if there was a chance that she could find Daryl. Carol is surprised that Daryl got so close to people in France, and Daryl admits that he didn't mean to, and it's hard for him to explain it. Carol offers to listen if Daryl ever wants to try to explain, and Daryl tells his friend that he's glad that she came.
The next morning, Daryl and Carol load up the car for the trip to Paris, but Theo convinces them to sit down for a breakfast of Didi's truffle eggs first. The group enjoys Didi's delicious breakfast and Didi asks what their plans are once they find Laurent, and Daryl tells her that they're still working it out. Daryl and Carol notice a Power of the Living convoy approaching the house, and Theo pulls a shotgun on them, shocking both them and Didi. "What'd they offer you," asks Daryl, realizing that the old man had sold them out to Genet. Theo insists to Didi that he did it for the two of them and that armies come and go, and you don't survive by picking the losing side. Disgusted and furious, Didi takes the gun from Theo and orders Daryl and Carol to come with her. Spotting several Guerriers and Genet herself, Didi directs Daryl and Carol on where to hide and gives them the shotgun.
Genet, the Capo, and three of her men enter the kitchen, and Didi lies that Daryl and Carol had left that morning after breakfast with Theo adding that they had done their best to assure the two, but Daryl and Carol were suspicious. Genet sits down to enjoy some of the truffle eggs, telling Theo and Didi that they're looking for some very dangerous people, and they are the enemy who Genet's people are at war with. Didi has heard of people like Genet from her father who died young fighting with the Maquis, people who came to their village during another war, people who were looking for children to put on trains -- the Nazis. Didi defiantly refuses to help the Guerriers despite Genet pointing out that the eggs are still warm even though Daryl and Carol had supposedly left hours ago. Genet knows that the two are still here somewhere, and she orders the Capo to turn Theo and Didi into Ampers to search for the pair.
Spotting Guerriers moving to search the barn, Daryl gives Carol the shotgun and instructs her to cover him while he gets the car. Daryl attempts to retrieve his weapons from the car, but he is forced to hide, grabbing a tire iron from the barn instead. Seeing that Theo and Didi are in trouble, Carol fires through a window, killing two Guerriers, one of whom fires his gun wildly as he falls and causing Genet, the Capo, and the other Guerrier to flee from the kitchen. As the two Guerriers outside move towards the house, Daryl drops the tire iron in favor of a hammer, the noise drawing the Guerriers towards him.
Entering the kitchen, Carol shoots a Guerrier that enters through the opposite door and makes her way upstairs where she exchanges fire with one of Genet's men, before being caught by one from the other direction and cornered at gunpoint by Genet, the Capo, and the Guerrier. Genet tells Carol that she sees judgment in Carol's eyes, but Carol tells her that she's confused how someone like Genet could turn into such a monster. "Do you know what else I've seen? The City of Lights gone dark while the wealthy fled to their villas and their chateaux. Families huddled in terror under the Pont Neuf as barges took the powerful down the Seine for refuge. And while the great works were safe... I saw my love -- my hope -- devoured by the monsters they made. Five feet from me. On the other side of the glass. Have you ever known that kind of loss?"
Genet signals the Capo to kill Carol but Daryl, having killed the two Guerriers outside, enters and shoots the Capo from behind and then kills the last remaining Guerrier, leaving Genet cornered by Daryl and Carol. As Genet divides her attention between the two, Carol grabs the Capo's dart gun and shoots Genet in the back with the Amper Serum which Genet is unable to remove despite her frantic efforts. Genet's veins and eyes turn black, and her head swells up before blood bursts out of it as she horrifically dies. In the kitchen, Daryl and Carol find the heartbroken Theo cradling the dead body of Didi who was hit by the falling Guerrier's fire.
Daryl and Carol help Theo to bury Didi and prepare to leave that night. Carol finds a map in the car's glove box and Daryl finally opens up to her, telling Carol that he didn't think much of Isabelle when he first met her. Isabelle needed his help while Daryl needed a way home, so they made a deal, and Laurent kind of became the glue that held Daryl's group together. Daryl never stopped trying to get home, but the longer he stayed, the harder it got. Carol recognizes that Daryl loved Isabelle, something that he doesn't deny. "You know Laurent's coming home with us, right?" asks Daryl which Carol confirms with a smile. Daryl and Carol drive away, heading for Paris.
At dawn, Sabine and Dr. LaFleur visit Losang and Jacinta in the Nest's jail. Sabine reveals that Genet is dead, killed by the American. Losang takes the fact that Genet went after Laurent and died as proof that God is on the Union's side. Sabine tells Losang that Genet's way wasn't enough, but neither is Losang's, leading Jacinta to ask what happens now.
Now the leader of both the Union of Hope and the remnants of Genet's people, Losang leads the Guerriers into a gathering of the Nest's surviving inhabitants and announces that all is forgiven. Losang welcomes the Power of the Living into the Union of Hope, declaring "let us merge our dreams for a better, stronger future. Ahead is the promised land. Laurent will take us there. Let's find the child."

- The title of the episode, "Le Paradis Pour Toi", is French and means "heaven for you". It's also a reference to a song of the same name by Gillian Hills. It plays several times during the episode at Theo's Plantation.
- As of this episode, Laïka Blanc-Francard (Sylvie) has been removed from the opening credits.
- This episode was shown in advance at the PaleyFest on October 19, 2024.[1]
- In the Episode Insider, it's revealed that the way that Daryl and Carol were reunited was actually Norman Reedus' idea.
- It was also revealed that Greg Nicotero's team designed an animatronic head for Genet's death scene which involved getting really detailed photos of Anne Charrier's teeth. Anne, who was in a very remote village in the south of France at the time, had to go into town just to get a ruler and took pictures of her face with her mouth wide open with her husband's help for reference for the animatronic. After filming was completed, Anne was allowed to keep the animatronic head.
- The Episode Insider also revealed that they used a lifelike dummy of Codron for the scenes where Carol and Codron escape from the Power of the Living. Codron's actor, Romain Levi, found the dummy funny and shocking due to how lifelike it looked, but also joked that the dummy's head was too big.
- With the deaths of Isabelle and Genet, Carol is the only living female main character.
- It is the first time in the TV Universe that only one female main character is still alive at the end of an episode.
- This is the first episode of the Daryl Series where two main characters die in one episode.
- It is also the first time that at least one main character died two episodes in a row.
- This is the first episode in the series in which Laurent and Sylvie don't appear.
- However, Sylvie died in the previous episode.
Episode Highlights[]
- Outside the Nest, Dr. LaFleur turns all of Genet's selected soldiers into Ampers except Carol, who plays dead during the chaos and uses Jean's body as cover. Carol then hijacks an ATV that has Codron tied to the back of it, gains access to the Nest after Guerriers blow the gate open and frees Codron, who tells Carol to tell Daryl that he "did it for the boy".
- Inside the Nest, Losang interrogates Isabelle to try and get information about Laurent. After an Union soldier informs Losang about the ensuing battle, Isabelle slashes Losang's face with the drain cover she took but Losang stabs her in the stomach in retaliation.
- Still alive, Isabelle wakes up and wanders outside where she is saved from an Amper by Carol. Carol helps Isabelle sit down and introduces herself as a shocked Isabelle realises she's looking for Daryl.
- Daryl is released from his cell by a scared Union soldier who is being chased by an Amper. After fighting through a hallway, Daryl finds and tearfully reunites with an equally emotional Carol, who gives her best friend a warm hug.
- Daryl is led by Carol to Isabelle, who is dying from her stab wound. After Daryl promises to take care of Laurent, Isabelle passes away, leaving Daryl devastated.
- Genet finds Losang, who surrenders, ending the battle between their respective groups. Genet later interrogates Losang for information about Daryl, whilst also informing the guilt-ridden Losang about Isabelle's death.
- Carol and Daryl look for Laurent and Fallou after escaping the Nest, and end up at a plantation house where they meet Theo and Didi, who had helped Laurent and Fallou, who mistake Carol for Isabelle.
- Theo finds Daryl and Carol a car that will get them to Paris where Fallou and Laurent are, but Daryl and Carol are forced to hide after Power of the Living Guerriers show up at the plantation, looking for Daryl.
- The Guerriers show up again the next day, this time with Genet, and it's revealed Theo sold Carol and Daryl out. After a tense breakfast between Theo, Didi, and Genet, Carol, who is hiding nearby, opens fire on Power of the Living, sensing the old couple are in danger.
- During the resulting battle, Daryl and Carol corner Genet in another room. After Daryl kills the Capo and another Guerrier, Carol uses the Capo's Amper serum gun to inject the serum into Genet, which horrifyingly kills her due to the serum adversely affecting living people. Carol and Daryl then find Theo cradling Didi's body in the kitchen, as she was killed by stray gunfire from one of the Guerriers.
- Back at the Nest, Sabine and Dr. LaFleur inform Losang that Genet got killed by the Americans and Losang, now the leader of both Union of Hope and Power of the Living, addresses the merged groups about their plan to find Laurent.
