The M4A1 carbine is a family of firearms tracing its lineage back to earlier carbine versions of the M16 rifle. The M4 is a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle, with 80% parts commonality.
It is a gas-operated, magazine-fed, selective fire, shoulder-fired weapon with a telescoping stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle, the M4 has a 14.5 in (370 mm) barrel, allowing its user to better operate in close quarters combat. The M4 has selective fire options including semi-automatic and three-round burst (like the M16A2 and M16A4), while the M4A1 has the capability to fire fully automatic instead of three-round burst (like the M16A1 and M16A3). The carbine is also capable of mounting an M203 grenade launcher (the M203A1 with a 9-inch barrel as opposed to the standard 12-inch barrel of the M203 used on the M16 series).
A modified version of this gun is widely used by the Civic Republic Military. This version of the gun sports a two-pronged bayonet on the end.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
The M4 carbine is heavily used by the U.S military. It is slated to eventually replace the M16 rifle for most combat units in the United States Army.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Original TV Series[]
A number of groups use M4's, including Rick's group, the Woodbury Army and The Governor's Militia.
Fear the Walking Dead[]
Isabelle and later the CRM Reclamation Team that comes after her uses the CRM's modified M4's.
World Beyond[]
CRM troops use their modified version of this gun.
During the Battle of the Perimeter, Indira grabs a gun from a fallen CRM soldier and uses it against the CRM troops, killing Sergeant Mills with it. Similarly, Silas Plaskett uses another dropped M4 to give Dennis Graham covering fire.
The Ones Who Live[]
The CRM's modified M4's continue to be favored by their troops, although the CRM has also added Pneumatic Rifles to their arsenal.
While fighting walkers outside of Cascadia Forward Operating Base, Pearl Throne nearly shoots Michonne for going rogue, but she's stopped by Rick Grimes. As the fight with the herd is a stealth mission, the CRM forces rely on pneumatic rifles and cold weapons to fight the walkers rather than their usual rifles with Thorne just using her rifle's bayonet aside from her attempt to shoot Michonne.
While hunting Rick and Michonne, Jadis lends one of the CRM's rifles to Red, but he is quickly disarmed by Rick and Michonne. Michonne later retrieves the rifle and uses it during a standoff with Jadis, shooting a zombified Tina with it as she attacks Jadis, but only hitting Tina in the cheek. As Tina bites Jadis on the ground, Michonne moves into a better position and shoots Tina again, this time putting her down, but not before Jadis is fatally bitten.
