New York is the eleventh state of the United States of America. It is a location that appears in AMC's The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Dead City.
Pre-Apocalypse
New York was one of the fifty states in the United States of America. It is located in the Northeastern region of the United States. New York was the fourth-most populous U.S. state and the twenty-seventh-largest by area.
The state is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east; it shared a maritime border with Rhode Island; and an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario to the north. It had a population of 19.14 million inhabitants at the time of the outbreak. It is sometimes referred to as "New York State" to distinguish it from New York City, which is its largest city.
Christine and her first husband were from New York City, though the former left the state for Broke Jaw Ranch after the latter was killed in the September 11 attacks.
Jennifer Mallick grew up in Queens, New York where she was raised by her uncle while her mother and father served in the U.S. Military.
At some point, an artist named Indira founded an artist colony a few miles from Ithaca out of an abandoned farm town. Overtime, the community acquired a number of artists who greatly contributed to the unique architecture of the town's buildings and created sculptures and art pieces that were subsequently displayed, such as the Verite.
Post-Apocalypse
Not much is known about the status of New York following the initial outbreak. It can be assumed that it followed the example of California, with state and local police being among the first respondents, with these first respondents being joined by military units if and when a state of emergency was declared. During the bombing of several major cities throughout the country during an event known as Operation Cobalt, the U.S. military also destroyed any and all bridges and tunnels connecting Manhattan to the main land. This led to a gigantic horde of a million walkers gathering on the island. The survivors left behind had to adapt and now only stay above the tenth floor of buildings. They also created a zip line system to traverse the borough and self-sustaining hydroponic farms on rooftops.[1]
World Beyond
Sometime before the third year of the outbreak, a portion of Ithaca, New York was reclaimed and occupied by the Civic Republic Military in order to create a Civic Republic Research Facility for its brightest minds under the Alliance of the Three to collaborate, with their main goal being to study bitten survivors via trade system with other settlements throughout the country in hopes of developing a cure for the Wildfire Virus.
The CRM also began a concerted effort to clear the state of the undead, establishing a series of Culling Facilities across New York run by consignees and military personnel whose task was the mass elimination of herds multiple times a week. According to Dennis Graham, if the CRM's modeling was right, the culling facilities could clear the state of zombies while the CRM's measures would keep any more from coming in, potentially giving humanity a foothold to rebuild.
