Prior to the outbreak, the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the USSR. As of when the outbreak began, there were at least 1,000 active artificial satellites operational in low Earth orbit by several different countries.
Before the apocalypse, a Soviet satellite was launched into space. It stayed there after the Soviet Union' dissolution.
In 1998, the International Space Station had its first module, Zarya, launched by Russia, it was planned to be completed by 2010 however, it was unfinished by the time of the outbreak.
Right before the apocalypse began, Valery Vashchenko was sent to the ISS. He was 3 days away from returning until the outbreak.

Post-Apocalypse[]
Television Universe[]
Valery Vashchenko manages to get in contact with Victor Strand for a few minutes. Valery tells Victor that the apocalypse is a world wide event. The duo talk a little bit about literature and wine before the radio connection is cut off. It is also presumed that space agencies such as NASA, Roscosmos and ESA have dissolved as a result of the outbreak.
Sometime later, the Internation Space Station alongside Vashchenko's remains (regardless if he reanimated or not) fell out of orbit and burned up during reentry. Over the course of several years, most artificial satellites reentered the atmosphere and burned up.
An abandoned Soviet satellite crash lands into earth.
