PADRE's Expansion is a major event that took place during the eighth season of AMC's Fear the Walking Dead.

History

First Attempt

Following Operation Cobalt and successfully making contact with Senator Elias Vazquez, Major General Krennick and the adults of PADRE decide to begin distributing the supplies in the hundreds of shipping containers at the PADRE Shipyard which hold enough supplies to build new communities all across the country, a doomsday plan devised by the U.S. government in case of a scenario such as the Trials so that humanity could rebuild.

However, before the plan can be implemented the shipyard is overrun by thousands of walkers, killing Krennick, his military forces and all of the PADRE adults. The only survivors are Krennick's children Sam and Ben whom he boosts to safety on top of one of the containers and, with his last words, urges not to let the plan die as it's too important. Subsequently, Krennick and all of the adults reanimate and join the massive herd roaming the shipyard.

Preparing for a Second Attempt

Initially considering suicide, Sam and Ben are given a new purpose when the other kids on the island attempt to contact their parents. Over the next 12 years, Sam and Ben, renaming themselves "Shrike" and "Crane" after the code names that their father gave them, lie that the adults had abandoned them and work on building a society without families so that other children won't feel the same pain that they had. They also leave the shipyard overrun with thousands of walkers in order to protect the supplies from other survivors and they train the other children of PADRE, kidnapped by their Collectors, to one day clear the shipyard to try the expansion again.

After the truth about PADRE is discovered by Madison Clark and June Dorie 12 years after the first failed attempt, Shrike decides to enact the expansion plan again. To this end, Shrike offers Morgan Jones a deal to help him save Grace if he will clear out the shipyard for her, agreeing to allow Madison, Dwight, Sherry, Daniel Salazar and his forces to help too. However, they back out after learning that the thousands of walkers must be cleared out by hand as it's too dangerous to use guns that could detonate the fertilizer and munitions stored in the containers.

Following the death of her mother, Morgan's daughter Mo agrees to help Shrike clear out the shipyard and begin the expansion, wanting to run away from her pain despite her father's warnings that she will only get herself killed in the attempt. Shrike locks Morgan in a train car and has him surrounded by a herd so that Morgan can't get in the way of her plans.

A Successful Expansion

Following the Fall of PADRE, Madison's Group splits up, taking some of the renamed MADRE's supplies each to build new communities and honor Madison's ideals of trying to build something better. They also apparently share the supplies with other groups of survivors as Alicia had learned the story of Madison's sacrifice from another group who had one of MADRE's shipping containers.

Results

First Attempt

• Failure of the first attempt by Major General Krennick and his forces.

Second Attempt

• Successful clearing of the shipyard in the second attempt.
• Death of Sam Krennick and the banishment of Ben Krennick from PADRE.
• Successful retrieval of the coordinates that the military intended to use from the zombified Major General Krennick.
• Madison's Group takes over PADRE and reforms it, deciding not to go forward with the expansion despite having the coordinates and the resources.
