―Roman to Roberto if Shel decides to let him go. (Determinant)[src]

Overview

Roman starts as a caring and friendly man. However, when push comes to shove, Roman is shown to be willing to do anything to keep his group safe, including kill others. He and his group show that they can be relentless towards those who wronged them, hunting down Dee for stealing from them. It is shown that he and his group kill on sight, killing Bonnie if the player is too slow. At the start of "Two Sisters", Roman and his group were very happy, often having fun with guitar performances and more. However, after an unknown survivor, Roberto, is found in their camp, Roman tells the group they can either let him go or execute him. If the group votes on it, Roman is willing to kill Roberto, though he doesn't enjoy it, stating that someone else will be pulling the trigger if it happens again.

Whether the player lets Roberto go or kills him, the outcomes ends up being the same (though the latter leads to Boyd's death). In both choices Roman becomes much more controlling and hellbent on keeping the place safe to prevent anyone from coming in. It's revealed they have stopped the guitar performances and other fun activities. After Roman finds a fellow member of the group, Stephanie, stealing from them, he is shown to be willing to put down their former friend if it ensures their own survival. He tells Shel that she's going to be the one to do it, which she can either go through with it or ditch the group.

Pre-Apocalypse

Location Unknown

Not much is known about Roman's life prior to or as the outbreak began, except that he used to be the guitarist of a band called "Plastic Toys". They used to play in a bar where Stephanie worked as a bartender.

Post-Apocalypse

Season One

"400 Days"

"Downpour"

On day 220, an unknown person steals medical supplies from Roman's Group. He, Clive, and Stephanie give chase, searching the cornfield with flashlights in an attempt to find the suspect. Roman can be heard shouting to Stephanie throughout their search to see if she found anything yet, and cursing about being unable to find the thief.

"Two Sisters"

Roman resides at Gil's Pitstop with Shel, Becca, Stephanie, and the surviving cancer support group members Boyd, Clive, and Joyce. On day 236, in the diner, they watch Becca give a guitar performance and then proceed to work. Roman feeds a walker chained to a pole outside, telling Shel that at least they can be "put to good use", as they would react to human intruders.

Later, Roman has a man blindfolded whom Clive claims they caught stealing supplies. Stephanie and Boyd try to vouch for him, stating that they can find a way for him to be useful. Clive and Joyce disagree with them, saying that they don't need any new additions to the group. Shel, being the only one without any input, is pushed by Roman to decide the intruder's fate. If Shel decides to let the man go, Roman tells him that if he ever returns he'll wish he died that day. If Shel decides to kill the man, Roman is the one to shoot him but says that if something similar were to happen again, Shel or Boyd will have to handle it. If Shel abstains, Roman makes the decision based on his previous conversation with Shel about the walkers.

23 days later, Roman catches Stephanie trying to escape with some of their supplies. Feeling betrayed, he locks her in a trailer. Roman then goes to inform Shel, and says that they have to kill her with the rule being that anybody who knows of their location can't leave, out of fear that such a person will tell someone willing to hurt them of their location.

Roman tells Shel that she has to take care of the situation - if Shel agreed to keep the previous intruder alive, Roman states that Shel's decision was wrong and it cost Boyd's life, and now she has to pay for it. If Shel decided to let Roman kill the intruder, Roman reminds Shel of the agreement that was made. Though many attempts at trying to convince him to keep Stephanie alive, Roman still disagrees.

Roman lets Shel explain the situation to Becca beforehand. If Shel decides to take off in the RV with Becca, Roman is last seen shouting for them to come back. If Shel decides to go through with the execution, Roman apologizes for it having to be this way and then escorts Shel to the van.

Season Two

"All That Remains"

It is unknown how Roman got separated from his group and when he joined a new group in the woods. After Clementine's first night with the cabin group, she, Nick, and Pete travel to the fish traps, where they find Roman lying dead on the ground after being shot in the head, along with several other bodies. Nick believes they were killed by Carver.

Death

Killed By

Roman was shot in the head by members of Carver's Group, as discovered by Clementine in "All That Remains". During Clementine's conversation with Carver, if Clementine mentions the dead group down by the stream to Carver, he will correct her, implying that he may have been involved with their deaths. More evidence comes from the presence of a pallet from Howe's Hardware at the scene of the murders.

Trivia

  • Roman stated that he used to be part of a band; possibly the "Plastic Toys" as it is on his jacket.
  • Roman bears a resemblance to his voice actor, Andrew Chaikin.
  • Based on dialogue found in the prototype, intended for Tavia's chapter, Becca and Shel were meant to have different reactions about leaving Roman. If they stayed, Shel would've said that Roman went "outta control" and that's why they couldn't could their group together, as people kept leaving due to his treatment of others. She would also state that Clive helped them escape from the truckstop. Alternatively, Becca could've also defended him, saying that everyone would've been safe if they had just listened to Roman. She also stated that she believed Clive and Roman to still be alive, as they knew how to take care of themselves[1]
  • Roman is one of two characters Andrew Chaikin has voiced, the other being Carlos.
  • Roman is the first character from the "400 Days" DLC to appear in Season 2, albeit as a corpse.
  • Roman's face texture is derived from Mark's. His jacket texture is also derived from Lee Everett's jacket in "Starved For Help".[2]
