Sam, also known by his epithet "the Butcher", is a character and an antagonist encountered in The Walking Dead: The Road to Woodbury. He was a man living in Woodbury, Georgia, described as a bigger man, who ran the barter system. He's the responsible for the death of Joshua Lee Hamilton.
Nothing is known about Sam's life prior to or as the outbreak began. He could have lived in or near Woodbury before the outbreak.
Sam ran the barter system in Woodbury, trading supplies for work. He gave Joshua Lee Hamilton many things in trade for work. One day, when Joshua was coming back from a supply run, Sam tried forcing him to give up his supplies. After Joshua refused, they had a little confrontation before Sam shot Joshua in the back of the head, killing him. After this incident, Sam was beaten by Martínez and thrown into "prison" where he was the first person to battle in the Woodbury Arena.
