Whatever... whatever, man... it’s your show... I just work here.
―Sam to Martínez after being relieved of guard duty.[src]

Sam Curtis is a survivor of the outbreak in Skybound Entertainment's Comic Universe. He is a minor character in Thomas Dunne Books' The Walking Dead and a minor antagonist in Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a guard living in Woodbury. He is described as "hardly out of his teens, with a spindly body decked out in hip-hop regalia, and a headband drawn around his Jheri curls". He also looks "slightly stoned and more than a little paranoid".

Pre-Apocalypse

United States

Nothing is known about Sam's life prior to or as the outbreak began. He may have lived in or near Woodbury before the outbreak.

Post-Apocalypse

Woodbury, Georgia, United States

At some point after the outbreak began, Sam became a guard in Woodbury.

This Sorrowful Life

While Martínez helps Rick's group, Stevens and Alice escape Woodbury, and Sam is guarding one of the town's walls. Martínez calls him down and offers to take over his shift for him, taking his AK so that they can escape from Woodbury. Sam hands him his firearm and walks down the alley. Later, after the Governor is attacked by Michonne, it is said that Sam hung out behind in the alley and witnessed Martinez jumping the fence and Michonne splitting from the group.

The Fall of the Governor - Part Two

"Battlefield"

Sam goes on a supply run for fuel, along with Gus Strunk, Rudy Warburton, Matthew Hennesey, and Raymond Hilliard.

The Calm Before

Sam was a member of a four-man squad led by Bruce Cooper that was sent to sweep the parking lot of the Wal-Mart near Woodbury due to the nearby National Guard Station being blown up by the prison survivors.

Bruce split his four-man team into two, with Sam accompanying him and two unnamed men investigating the vehicles in the car park nearby. Bruce and Sam discovered the survivors present within the abandoned Wal-Mart. Bruce had ordered them to come out, which resulted in Glenn coming alone and being promptly shot by Bruce. In response, Andrea shot Bruce through the throat, and Michonne sneaked up and mutilated the two other men.

Sam witnessed the deaths of his three companions, and despite Andrea ordering him to lower his gun, he instead cried out in a rage, screaming "You killed them... YOU KILLED THEM!", before raising his gun and promptly being shot in the head.

Made To Suffer

During a flashback in issue 43, Sam's corpse is seen when the Governor finds the scene of the shooting and Bruce with a gunshot wound to the neck. Brian prevents Bruce from reanimating, and then the party leaves Sam and the other corpses behind.

Trivia

  • Last words: "You killed them... YOU KILLED THEM!"
  • Sam is replaced by "Curtis" during the Walmart shootout in The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor - Part Two.
    • While this could be an error, it's also possible that Sam and Curtis are the same character, as Curtis is a surname, and there are many instances in the novels where a character is named, but their comic appearances differ from each other notably. This would likely be done to not introduce too many unnecessary characters and give already existing ones more activity.
  • In Issue 38, Sam has a nose piercing, but in Issue 39, he doesn't; this is most likely a coloring error.
