Setting(s)

The game first starts with Clementine and AJ driving on the road in West Virginia, where they soon stop for supplies at an abandoned train station. After it was overrun due to an explosion, they get in an accident in their car while trying to escape. They were knocked unconscious later and they were saved by a group of teenagers led by a boy named Marlon. They were taken to a boarding school located in the middle of the forest of West Virginia. Soon after AJ killed Marlon, they were exiled from the school for a while until Clementine and AJ were let back inside to help them with a upcoming raider attack. Soon after the attack with three members kidnapped, they interrogate a member of the raiders, Abel, that was injured and left behind the next morning. Afterwards, they scope out the raiders’ boat and later that night, they attack the boat docked somewhere a little ways from the boarding school to save their friends. Afterwards, the boat destroyed and most of the members of the raider group dead, Clementine, Violet/Louis, Tenn, and AJ go to a bridge, where they are attacked by Tenn’s adoptive sister, Minerva, which results in her death and either Tenn’s, Louis’s, or Violet’s death. Afterwards, after one of the survivors (Tenn or Louis/Violet) were split up from Clementine and AJ, her and AJ were trying to escape but Clementine was bitten on the leg by a walker, which after they get to safety above a small cliff, they wander through the forest, where they take shelter inside barn that belonged to James (the person who helped Clementine and AJ after they were exiled and the one who helped them during the attack on the raiders). After many close calls and almost being devoured by walkers, they are safe, but Clementine was facing death. Soon after Clementine makes a decision whether to have AJ kill her with the axe, or leave her. Regardless, AJ later amputates her leg and after escaping the barn, they return to the boarding school, where they reside.

Trivia

  • Unlike previous seasons that consisted of five episodes each, the final season consisted of only four episodes.
  • This was the third and final season to feature Clementine as a playable character, and the second to have her as the protagonist.
  • Job said that Season 4 would wrap up Clementine’s story, but not The Walking Dead as a whole.
    • He also stated that the premiere would be in Q2 although new CEO stated that it will release in summer 2018 in an article he answered.
    • Job also hinted at the returns of some characters from Season 1.
  • This is the only season where Kenny does not appear.
  • It was confirmed on the Telltale Community page that Gary Whitta would be returning to work on the final season. He had previously written "Around Every Corner" and helped write "400 Days" for Telltale in 2012.
  • Robert Kirkman teased in Issue 175's Letter Hacks that this season might feature a character with an animal companion like Ezekiel and Shiva.
    • This character was revealed to be Marlon, who owns a dog named Rosie as his companion.
  • The Final Season's creative director confirmed on an AMA that this season will feature an LGBT character(s).[2]
    • This character was revealed to be Violet, who is the former girlfriend of Minerva, one of Tennessee's sisters, the twin sister of Sophie, and a determinant girlfriend of Clementine.
    • The second character was revealed to be James and his boyfriend Charlie.
  • The artwork looks similar to the one made for the Game of the Year edition of Season 1.
  • There was a wanderer character named Jill and she was going to be appear in the old "leave the school in the episode 1" version of the this season. Later this was scrapped.[3]
  • The Final Season will come with some new features not found in previous games, such as a new over-the-shoulder camera, better combat and a visual overhaul. 4K and HDR support has also been confirmed for compatible devices. It will also be possible to import save data from previous entries in the series.
  • It is confirmed by a Telltale employee on their forums that the García family will not return for this season.
  • This is the first season to release on a Nintendo console, namely the Nintendo Switch.
    • Initially, it was rumored that the first three seasons may release on the console as well. That would eventually turn out to be true, as on August 21, 2018, Telltale announced that Season 1 along with the 400 Days DLC episode would be releasing on the Nintendo Switch on August 28, 2018, with Season 2 and Season 3 also releasing on the console sometime in 2018.
      • When Telltale announced that it had laid off of the majority of its staff and confirming "majority studio closure" in September 2018, it was uncertain if both Season 2 and Season 3 will release on the Nintendo Switch, leaving the statuses of the release of both seasons on the console unknown.
        • However, on October 6, 2018, when Skybound Games announced that they will be finishing Season 4 and the final two episodes, a fan on Twitter asked about if ports of Season 2 and Season 3 would be worked on for the Switch, with Skybound's Twitter account simply replying with "Stay tuned!" [1]
          • Season 2 and Season 3 were eventually released on the Nintendo Switch on January 21, 2020.[2]
  • It is estimated that Season 4 will take place 7-8 years or 2558-2920 days after the initial outbreak seen in Season 1, whereas the TV show is at 620 days and the comic books are at least at 1481 days.
    • According to Fear The Walking Dead's episode "Date of Death" the year of the outbreak is 2010, which was the year the main Television series was released.
    • Since the video game follows the comic storyline, the outbreak is thought to have started in 2003 as that is when the comic's outbreak canonically begins and when the comic series itself began releasing. Going off the when the game was first revealed, July 19th, it has been 2923 days. (8 years and 1 day) which would fit within the estimated time. Or 2558 days (7 years and 1 day)
    • However, going from 2010, it could be January 17th which would be 2740 day into the outbreak (7 years and 5 months) or going off the release date for the final episode December 18th, it could be 2920 days or 8 years since the initial outbreak.
  • In this season, no characters are (canonically) killed by walkers until the last episode, where 2 - 6 characters are fatally bitten (Sullene, Minerva + (determinant) Armando, Michael, Dorian, Louis/Violet))
  • The title of Episode 4 "Take Us Back" is a reference to the ending credit song of "No Time Left".
  • In September 2018, due to Telltale laying off the majority of its staff, leaving only 25 of previously 250 employees, cancelling most of their in-development titles, and the company announcing studio closure shortly afterwards, Season 4 will be the final game that Telltale will release.
  • It was initially announced that due to the studio closure, the rest of the season was cancelled, and Telltale would only release the second episode of the season, "Suffer The Children". This meant that this would be the final episode and that Season 4 would've been left unfinished. However, on September 24, 2018, Telltale announced that several companies were interested in completing The Final Season, that would allow the releases of the final two episodes in some manner.
    • That company was revealed to be Skybound Games, Skybound Entertainment's gaming division. On October 6, 2018, the company announced that they would be completing the final two episodes of Season 4.
  • On September 25, 2018, until they are able to figure out how the last two episodes will be played out, Telltale asked retailers and digital storefronts to pull the sales of the game and the season pass. During that time period, Season 4 was not purchasable on the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Games Store, the Nintendo eShop, Steam, and GOG.
    • Eventually, the game was made purchasable again around December 2018-January 2019 on the aforementioned digital marketplaces after Skybound affirmed that they have gained the rights to sell the former The Walking Dead games, and will not require anyone that had already purchased a season pass for The Final Season to buy one again once the last two episodes are released.
  • On October 6, 2018, it was announced that Skybound's gaming division, Skybound Games, would be completing the last two episodes of Season 4.
  • By November 20, 2018, Skybound announced that development of the series had started up again with many former Telltale Games developers.
  • Users that had purchased the title before Telltale's closure on Steam or on GOG will receive the final episodes on those platforms, but otherwise, the season was moved to the Epic Games Store for all new purchasers. According to Skybound, Epic Games had helped with the season's completion following Telltale's closure, and thus Skybound felt it was necessary to offer the game through their platform.
  • On April 3, 2019, Ian Howe, CEO of Skybound Games confirmed that this is the end of Clementine's journey but he also said that this season may be not the last as he wants to make more The Walking Dead stories.
  • Strings in files reference two unused characters named Samantha and Mateo.
  • A collector's version of this game was released by Skybound called Telltale's The Walking Dead: The Final Season Collector's Pack. It contained the full game, an A.J. figure, and an A.J. pin. It was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
