A shovel is a tool used for digging. A shovel with a pickaxe attachment is the preferred weapon of Josiah LaRoux.
Post-Apocalypse[]

Shovels are primarily used for digging holes, such as graves. After first arriving in Atlanta, Rick Grimes grabs a small shovel from inside of a tank and uses it to take down the first zombie to approach him before dropping it again. On one particular instance, Jim is driven to dig a number of graves outside of the Atlanta Survivor Camp for reasons that he can't explain. Following an attack by a small herd, the graves are used to bury the victims. On other occasions, survivors have managed to use shovels in various ways to put down the undead.
In King County, at least one of Morgan Jones' traps was a shovel with parts of the blade removed to transform the rest into deadly spikes.
During the barn massacre, Tammy Rose Sutton uses a shovel to defend a still tied up Rodney.
Fear the Walking Dead[]

June uses a shovel to help defend John's Cabin from a herd.
Josiah LaRoux's preferred weapon against walkers is a shovel with a pickaxe attachment and a shoulder strap for easier carrying. After putting them down, Josiah then proceeds to use the shovel to bury the bodies out of respect to the people that they once were, something that not many survivors bother to do. During a battle between Josiah and Morgan Jones, Josiah uses the shovel and its pickaxe attachment to fight the other man who is using his staff and battle axe. At the end of the fight, Sarah Rabinowitz uses Josiah's shovel to put his brother Emile's reanimated head down by smashing the head in half with the shovel's blade.
Tales of the Walking Dead[]
Joe uses a shovel to bury his dog Gilligan after he falls victim to a walker attack.
Daryl Series[]
Daryl and Isabelle use shovels to bury the nuns who died in the Power of the Living's attack on the Abbey of Saint Bernadette.
Telltale Series[]
Chuck uses a shovel as his primary weapon against walkers. He presumably loses it while fleeing the herd that he saves Clementine from in Savannah as there's no sign of it when Lee finds Chuck's body in the sewers.
After Clementine helps the Boarding School Survivors reclaim Ericson's Greenhouse, they find a shovel amongst the tools left behind there. Mitch mentions that the former students had been forced to use cups and bowls to dig a grave for Marlon and Brody as they didn't have any shovels before. Mitch suggests that the shovel would be great for digging graves in the future while Clementine suggests that it could make for a good weapon. After Mitch's death, Ruby uses the recovered shovel to bury him.
The Delta also has at least one aboard their ship.
