- The title of the episode, "Sonny Boy", is the same as the Al Jolson song.
- This is the sixth time an episode's title is a title of a song that plays in the episode. The first being "This Land Is Your Land", the second being "Sleigh Ride", the third being "End of the Line", the fourth being "Handle With Care" and the fifth being "In Dreams".

- This is the second episode of Fear the Walking Dead to be released in the U.S. on Mother's Day, which is rather coincidental considering the premise and themes of the episode. The first being "In Dreams".
- This episode, along with "In Dreams", were coincidentally named after songs in which Grace is featured as the central mother figure to the child and sings the latter songs to.
- The boots in Howard's collection are listed as belonging to Deadeye Driscoll who had died in them. In "J.D.", John mentioned that Deadeye Driscoll was killed by John Dorie II with his family's guns.
- Strand mentions the events of "Blackjack" and John Dorie's attempt to build a raft to cross floodwaters in order to reach June.
- Mickey using a makeshift suit of armor to escape from the Tower in "Till Death" is mentioned.
- Wendell suggests that John use the walker guts trick in order to get through the moat. However, John refuses as they don't have enough time for that and it's too dangerous for Mo.
- It's unclear what happened to John's gun with his death, if he returned it to June off-screen or if he still had it on him when he died.
- It's revealed in "The Road Ahead" that June managed to retrieve the guns and were stored in PADRE after she was captured.
- Some of the zombies amongst the herd surrounding the Tower appear to be radioactive zombies, presumably from the crater.
