19 months at sea. Hoping to stay ahead of this thing. We circled Spain. Nowhere's safe. We'll try Marseille next. Maybe the south of France is good. There's gotta be a safe place somewhere.

Spain, formally the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Reino de España), is a country located in Europe. Barcelona, its second largest city, serves as the primary setting of Image Comics' The Alien and Season 3 of AMC's Daryl Dixon. It was boarded by the former nation of France to the north and the former nation of Portugal to the west.

Much like nations across the planet, Spain collapsed following the 2003 outbreak though by which means the Spanish government attempt to handle it is mostly unclear. What is known however, is that the government attempted to lockdown all international transport and enact a nationwide quarantine via presumably sealing the border with France and Portugal. It is unknown about the types of settlements and groups that exist within the former nation.

Spain's fate in the TV universe is unclear though, given what Cosmonaut Valery Vashchenko said whilst onboard the ISS and that it shares a border with France, Spain collapsed around early-mid September 2010 following the Wildfire outbreak and it can be presumed that, due to the aforementioned border it shares with France, variants of zombies are prevalent here. It is also unknown about the settlements and communities inhabiting the fallen nation. In addition, Sue's family found it to be unsafe to land at.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Prior to the outbreak, Spain was the fourth-largest country by area in Europe and the sixth most populous, with a population of 42,000,000 people. Spain also boasted one of the largest economies in Europe.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Comic Universe[]

Although only a small glimpse of the outbreak is shown in Spain, it seems that the country has become overrun with the undead, indicating that the outbreak was indeed global. As mentioned by Jeff Grimes, the Spanish government attempted to contain the outbreak by locking down all international transport and erecting national quarantines, leaving Jeff stranded in a foreign country.

TV Universe[]

During the early days of the Trials, Sue's family circled Spain in their boat, but found it to be overrun with walkers and no safer than anywhere else.

Trivia[]

  • Spain is the only country besides the U.S. to appear in the Comic Universe in graphic format.
  • Whilst Spain's fate in the TV universe is unclear, considering it shares a border with France, it likely fell very quickly in 2010.
