Swamps are like flypaper to walkers. They all come in here, but they can't get back out.
Morgan to Madison and Mo.[src]

Swamps are areas of forested wetlands. They appear in Season 2 and Season 8 of AMC's The Walking Dead, as well as Season 8 of Fear the Walking Dead and Season 1 of Tales of the Walking Dead.

Post-Apocalypse

Following the start of the outbreak, the various swamps become infested by walkers who drawn into them and can't get back out again.

Due to Hershel Greene's belief that walkers are just sick people, he has Otis capture the walkers that had gotten trapped in the swamp near his farm and put them in Hershel's barn in order to protect them until a cure can be found.

Season 2

"Pretty Much Dead Already"

After Rick requests for his group to stay on Hershel's farm permanently, Hershel takes Rick and Jimmy into the swamps near the farm where they find the zombified Louise Bush and Doug trapped. Due to Hershel's beliefs that walkers are simply sick people, he takes the ones that he finds and puts them in his barn, telling Rick that his group will have to help him with it if they stay. Rick, Jimmy and Hershel pull the walkers out with difficulty, a job that had used to be Otis' before his death.

"Judge, Jury, Executioner"

Carl Grimes ventures into the swamp near the Greene Family Farm where he encounters a trapped walker and tries to shoot it. However, he can't bring himself to do it and he leaves. As a result of Carl's visit, the walker frees itself from the swamp and follows the young boy back to the farm where it mortally wounds Dale Horvath.

Season 8

"Dead or Alive Or"

Following the Bombing of Alexandria, Dwight suggests that the survivors of the community pass through a nearby swamp in order to safely reach the Hilltop. Dwight explains that Negan had considered it to be too dangerous for the Saviors to pass through and, as a result, Negan won't send his people into it if he doesn't have to. Despite the Militia being dubious of Dwight's honesty and the fact that the swamp was considered to be too dangerous even by their enemies, they eventually agree to the route.

Reaching the shore of the swamp, the Militia finds it infested with walkers. Daryl, Rosita, Siddiq and Scott pass through first in order to clear a path for the others. Using long sticks, the team feels out the walkers hiding underwater and puts them all down. Daryl and Siddiq discover a large group between them and the shallow spot, but they are able to clear them all out by working together and moving through the area slowly. Eventually, the team succeeds in clearing a safe path through the swamp for the other survivors.

On shore, Tara enlists Dwight's help to take care of a couple of nearby walkers before trying to kill him in revenge for Dwight killing Denise. However, they are interrupted by the approach of a group of Saviors who had decided to check out the swamp anyways despite the unlikelihood of the Militia passing through it. In order to protect the others, Dwight reveals himself and learns that Laura is still missing, so the Saviors are unaware of his betrayal. Using this to his advantage, Dwight leads the Saviors away, saving the hiding Militia members from detection, an act that is witnessed by both Tara and Rosita. Although Daryl is furious upon his return after learning of this, both women defend Dwight's actions, realizing that he truly was on their side. With a path having been cleared for them, the Militia is able to safely pass through the swamp and reach the Hilltop.

Season 1: Tales of the Walking Dead

"Dee"

Brooke's Steamboat moves through a swamp and a concerned Dee notices figures moving through the trees in the fog. However, Brooke dismisses it as just being walkers. That night, Dee hears a splash outside, but she can't see anything moving on shore.

The next morning, after learning of Mr. Langston's disappearance, Dee mentions the noise that she had heard, but defends herself for not reporting it by pointing out that the swamp is always making all kinds of noise which Nolan agrees with.

Later, after being confronted by Dee, Billy jumps overboard and Brooke believes that he won't survive the swamp between the dead, the snakes and the gators.

During the battle between the steamboat survivors and Billy's Gang, Dee and Lydia escape to shore where a herd immediately attacks them. Dee puts down several walkers, but her knife gets stuck in the head of one. By covering herself and Lydia with a corpse and smearing walker blood on them, Dee is able to hide herself and her daughter until the herd moves on, but not before it devours several survivors of the steamboat that had managed to escape the massacre. After a final encounter with Brooke who was the only other survivor, Dee and Lydia make their way out of the swamp, eventually encountering an RV park and the Whisperers.

Season 8: Fear the Walking Dead

"Remember What They Took From You"

After escaping from PADRE, Madison Clark attempts to lead Mo into a swamp near Pip's Pavilion of Wonder for better cover from the forces chasing them. After a brief confrontation with Morgan, the group is forced into the swamp by an approaching herd despite Morgan's doubts that the two adults could protect the young girl since that particular swamp was where he had lost her seven years ago. The swamp is completely infested with walkers and Morgan explains that swamps act like flypaper to them: walkers can get in, but they can't get back out again. PADRE begins trying to drive the three towards a nearby airstrip by firing a flare into the air, drawing the surrounding walkers to attack them.

Morgan leads the group to an abandoned houseboat where he had been living with Mo following their escape from PADRE seven years before which is itself surrounded by more walkers. The herd overrunning the swamp follows the three to the houseboat with Mo's attempt to kill Madison causing them to attack and start pulling the houseboat underwater. As Madison, barely able to stand let alone walk and fight, stays behind, Morgan and Mo attempt to escape, but Mo's foot gets stuck. As Morgan puts down the swarming walkers with his staff, Mo finally remembers that the same thing had happened seven years ago, which had prompted Morgan to call PADRE to take her. Morgan reveals that he'd fought off the walkers for as long as he could before PADRE came back and rescued him. Madison creates a distraction by using her sledgehammer to draw the herd towards her, but before the herd can kill her, Grace arrives on a boat and shoots all of the attacking walkers. The group quickly escapes from the swamp on Grace's boat before any more walkers can reach them.

"Odessa"

Daniel Salazar tells Madison Clark that PADRE had abandoned him in a swamp due to considering Daniel too old to be of any use to them.

"More Time Than You Know"

Morgan, Mo and Grace canoe through a swamp in order to avoid detection by PADRE forces. After noticing that they are closing in, Morgan goes to secure Pip's Pavilion of Wonder for his family, but Mo disregards her parents' wishes and goes in search of the train car instead.

"All I See Is Red"

Overwhelmed by the massive herd overrunning the PADRE Shipyard, Mo and the PADRE prefects lead them into the swamp and towards Morgan's Houseboat, presumably in an effort to slow them down. Shrike plans to meet them on the other side, but orders the prefects to double back and find the zombified Krennick amongst the walkers who holds the coordinates needed for PADRE's Expansion.

Daniel's Resistance follows the Prefects into the swamp, guided by June who is monitoring PADRE's transmissions from Grace's Repeater Station. As Morgan, Madison and the others fight through the walkers, Morgan tries and fails to convince his daughter to stop. After attacking the others in a deranged state, Morgan makes it to the houseboat where the prefects have split up to cover more ground, attacking Mo who is forced to stab Morgan and take shelter with him in the sinking houseboat as the herd surrounds them. Morgan manages to signal their location to Madison using a Flare Gun as Daniel, his forces, Ben Krennick and the Prefects face off.

As walkers begin to break into the houseboat, Morgan helps Mo to escape using Madison's damaged oxygen tank from their previous visit. Madison arrives in time to rescue Morgan from the sinking houseboat and as Shrike confronts them, Krennick emerges from the swamp and fatally bites her before Madison puts him down and retrieves the coordinates. Returning to the others, Morgan and Madison are able to talk the prefects down.

"Iron Tiger"

Luciana reveals that she had made a deal to work for PADRE in exchange for Daniel's release which is why PADRE abandoned Daniel in the swamp instead of just killing him.

"Keeping Her Alive"

Tracy Otto leads Daniel and Madison to a frozen swamp containing a trapped herd, claiming that one of the walkers is Alicia. However, it turns out to be an attempt by Tracy to kill Madison by feeding her to Tracy's zombified mother. Tracy subsequently escapes as Madison, Daniel, Strand, Della, Sara and Ada are forced to flee as the herd begins breaking free and attacking.

"Fighting Like You"

A swamp will appear in this episode.

"The Road Ahead"

After the Fall of PADRE, Tracy returns to the swamp where she finds a zombified Troy tangled up in some vines. After saying goodbye to her father, Tracy shoots him and buries Troy nearby where she's later found by Strand.

Trivia

  • The swamp seen in Season 2 of the TV series appears to be safer to cross and much less infested than the swamps seen in later seasons as well as Fear the Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead. This is most likely because of it being very early into the outbreak, meaning less walkers have had time to accumulate, as well as Hershel's efforts to capture the walkers that he did find.
