These weren't heaps before. It was just trash laid out, as far as the eye could see. I used to come here to find things to paint on. Metal sheets. Fabrics. And then after... everything changed... I realized this whole place was a canvas. That we were the paint. We could create something new. We could become something new. We did. This was our world. Apart from everyone else. In every way.
―Anne to Rick.

The Heaps was a secured commune in AMC's Television Universe, located in Virginia. Originally a landfill, the area was home to the Scavengers, a group of bohemian isolationists who scavenged the wasteland. Before the Trials, art teacher Anne frequented the area for materials. She returned after the outbreak to create a new society with other survivors. They formed the trash into heaps as walls to protect against the zombies and other survivors. Anne, renamed as "Jadis", implemented broken English to quickly establish themselves as their own civilization. While not scavenging, they spent their time creating various art projects. Jadis came into contact with the Civic Republic Military. In need of people to either serve them or act as test subjects to study the Wildfire virus, the CRM initiated a deal with Jadis. In exchange for providing strong or infected survivors, the CRM would reward the Scavengers with supplies.

The CRM provided solar panels and a helipad in the Heaps for trading. After testing survivors captured by her people, Jadis determined their strengths. Strong survivors, leaders, labeled as "A's", were intentionally infected. Everyday people trying to survive, labeled as "B's", were left unharmed and traded. In 2012, Jadis came into contact with Alexandria after they took weapons the Scavengers marked. Their leader, Rick Grimes, offered weapons in exchange for joining their fight against the Saviors. Jadis betrayed the Militia after coming to Negan Smith with information for a better offer. During the Savior Conflict, Rick earned back their allegiance. After attacking the Sanctuary, Simon executed all of the Scavengers except for Jadis. Shedding her persona and reverting back to Anne, she captured Negan and attempted to infect him for the CRM, but later spared him after learning Simon's actions went against his orders.

The Militia eventually won the war against the Saviors. Rick offered Anne clemency and a place in Alexandria. Anne took up Rick's offer and allowed Morgan Jones to reside in the Heaps to rehabilitate his mental health. He later abandoned the Heaps and traveled to Texas. Anne returned to the Heaps in 2014 after numerous Saviors were murdered by an unknown party, with many in the Coalition believing it to be her doing. Losing the trust of the community, Anne contacted the CRM and requested to join the Civic Republic of Philadelphia. In need of an "A" for admission, Anne lied claiming she had one. She planned on hijacking the helicopter, but after finding a wounded Rick, she traded him as a "B" for admission into the city and abandoned the Heaps for the Civic Republic.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Before the apocalypse, the Heaps were not originally heaps, but rather a flat, normal landfill. Artist and teacher Anne used to visit this area to gather materials to paint on, such as metal sheets and fabrics.

Post-Apocalypse[]

In 2010, Anne survived the global outbreak of the Wildfire and managed to escape civilization by returning to the garbage dump she frequented for her art projects. Other survivors then joined her to form a large group known as the Scavengers. As Anne became the leader of the group, she believed that the fastest way for her group to become their own civilization was for them to develop their own language of broken English. By doing so, they had something that they could all participate in and bond them together in order to separate them from everyone else. Anne then gave herself the name of Jadis and a new identity in order to inspire herself to help her survive the new world.

As Jadis, she and her people survived by making homemade weapons from junk and scavenging the nearby areas for supplies. Anne claimed to not enjoy instigating conflicts with other survivors, as her motto for her group was: "We take, we don't bother". However, it was likely she and her group resorted to killing other survivors and attacking camps and settlements to obtain resources. Anne was extremely successful at keeping her group safe and kept as many as one hundred and fifty-five people alive. At some point, an ally of hers named Winslow died and reanimated. Anne had him covered in armor in order to be used as a weapon to test the strength of other survivors who encountered her group, though many failed.

Arrangement with the CRM[]

Within twenty months after the fall, Jadis and her people made contact with an advanced group known as the Civic Republic Military. Despite being incredibly secretive of their location and people, a member of the CRM saw Jadis' potential to aid their mission. Establishing a deal involving human trafficking, Jadis was responsible for providing survivors in exchange for supplies. The CRM required that her kidnapped survivors be designated as an "A" or a "B". An "A" was a survivor who has been recently infected, usually caused by Jadis, to be taken to the Civic Republic Research Facility in Ithaca, New York for the CRM scientists to study the progress of the virus. Survivors marked as "B"'s were strong survivors who could be useful to the Civic Republic. As they traded humans, Jadis and her people received solar panels, safehouses, and stockpiles of food. In addition, a helicopter pad was built in the junkyard for the CRM helicopters to take the captives and drop-off supplies.

Deal with the Alexandria Safe Zone[]

Twenty months after the fall, her people found an 1985 Nissan 720 Nicky RV occupied by a man named Heath, who was a supply-runner for a nearby community called the Alexandria Safe Zone. Anne and her people took the RV and traded Heath to the CRM. They later located a boathouse in the middle of a lake full of supplies, but surrounded by walkers in the lake. The supplies, however, were taken by Rick Grimes and Aaron, who also were from Alexandria. Anne's scavenger, Tamiel, followed the two to their community and entered in the middle of the night. Upon taking the supplies, she also kidnapped resident Gabriel Stokes. Gabriel left a clue note for Rick, writing "boat". Rick and his people then went searching for him and found the Scavengers. There, Rick struck a deal with the group after fighting Winslow, with him agreeing to provide the Heaps with weapons and supplies in exchange for their assistance in fighting the Saviors. After the deal was made Rick and his group left the Heaps. Rick and the others eventually returned and completed their end of the deal. However, the Scavengers betrayed the group and aided the Saviors during the battle in Alexandria.

All Out War Against the Saviors[]

With the Militia at war with the Saviors, Rick attempts to once again enlist the Scavengers help against the Saviors, but is rebuffed and imprisoned in the Heaps. Eventually, Jadis tries to execute Rick by feeding him to one of her pet walkers, but he fights back and convinces Jadis to change her mind. However, when they arrive at the Sanctuary, they find out that the Saviors have escaped the Militia's trap and are on the loose again. The Scavengers flee, but are spotted by the Saviors remaining within the structure.

Negan subsequently sends his second-in-command Simon to get the Scavengers back in line by killing one person as an example. However, Simon, increasingly frustrated with Negan's leadership and refusal to simply slaughter the communities, has his men massacre the Scavengers instead. Only Jadis survives by hiding and playing dead while the rest of the Scavengers are killed and are left to reanimate. When Rick and Michonne arrive, they find the entrance blocked by debris and have to fight through the zombified Scavengers. Tired of Jadis' actions, Rick leaves her behind in the Heaps while he and Michonne escape. Once they are gone, Jadis lures her zombified people into an industrial shredder in the Heaps and pulps them to end their suffering and to protect herself.

Left alone, Jadis contacts CRM and makes a deal to go with them. Jadis captures Negan following his fight with Rick and attempts to have him bitten by a walker in order to trade Negan as an "A" to CRM. Negan fights back, ultimately resulting in Jadis missing her chance to go with the helicopter when it arrives. Subsequently, Jadis lets Negan go and he promises to get her justice for the slaughter of her people. Jadis is left alone once again in the Heaps once Negan is gone.

Post-All Out War[]

After the war ends, Morgan visits Jadis, who tells her that Rick has allowed her to join Alexandria. She agrees to this and leaves, but Morgan stays behind, proclaiming that he needs to be alone. Weeks later, he's visited by Carol, Jesus, and Rick, who all encourage him to rejoin the communities. Morgan eventually leaves the Heaps, abandoning it.

About 19 months after the war, Anne returns to the Heaps and retrieves a walkie. She radios a man from a helicopter. He asks her if she has an "A or a B". She claims she's paid her dues but the man says for their deal to be on she'll need an A, and she promises them one tomorrow. Suddenly, Gabriel appears behind her and asks who she was talking to and if she had anything to do with Justin's death. She denies but tells him that she traded people for supplies for her people and confirms that she planned to do the same with him and Rick before. Gabriel says he has to tell Rick, but she says, "All this time, I thought you were a B", before knocking him out with her walkie.

The next day, Anne kisses a tied up and unconscious Gabriel before rolling up one of her walker experiments to kill him. He wakes up and begs her to stop before telling her he forgives her. She leans the walker over him and then stops, before putting a chloroform rag over his mouth to knock him out.

Later, Gabriel wakes up untied and alone. He finds a note in his pocket from Anne telling him, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. I want to go fast." He breaks down in tears. Anne is revealed to have left the Heaps in an RV to rendezvous with the helicopter elsewhere.
