One day a long time ago, dead people decided they didn't want to be dead anymore. Nobody knows why. And don't be embarrassed, it scared everyone. Nobody knew what was happening, or why... but life changed. Everyone was tested. That's why this time came to be called the Trials.
Carl to Andrea about the Trials.[src]

The Trials is a term for the post-apocalyptic age after human civilization fell in 2003 due to a virus of unknown origin. The entire global population was infected and became asymptomatic carriers that would resurrect into zombies after death. These zombies acted on an instinct to kill and devour the flesh of the living. Those bitten would die from a secondary infection and subsequently turn, leading to an extinction level event on July 19, 2003.

After the societal collapse, survivors attempted to restore civilization. In 2005, a group led by Rick Grimes created the Militia, a coalition of communities in Virginia. Three years later, the Militia allied with the Commonwealth, a major civilization in Ohio. Despite Rick Grimes' assassination by Sebastian Milton in 2008, his legacy caused civilization in North America to be restored sometime between 2008 and 2033. While the zombies still exist, the Trials had come to an end.

History[]

2003[]

A virus of unknown origin began spreading among the human population. Due to its infection rate and speed, it's believed to be airborne. Once infected, a human becomes an asymptomatic carrier until death. When a host dies from any method, except extreme head trauma, parts of the brain reactivate and causes the body to resurrect.

Due to the parts of the brain that resume activity, it causes the resurrected host (known as a zombie) to act on an animal instinct to hunt, kill, and devour the flesh of the living - human and animal. The only known method to dispose of a zombie is extreme head trauma, which causes the zombie to permanently die. A safety measure is to also penetrate the brain of a recently deceased person to prevent their reanimation.

The virus becomes activated within the bodily fluids, namely blood and saliva, and can cause a secondary infection that is 100% fatal when introduced into the bloodstream of a healthy individual, usually within 48 hours. This is normally transmitted through bites and scratches from a zombie, or through contamination of an open wound. The only known form of treatment is amputation if the infection site is on a limb - and only before the infection has spread.

On July 19, 2003; the virus reached a critical mass in which the number of zombies caused a spike in violence and resulted in societal collapse.

At some point between 2011 and 2033, the Trials had come to an end. While the virus still exists, it has become manageable. Free roaming zombies and zombie-related attacks are incredibly rare.
