The game is told over a prologue and seven chapters.

Prologue: What Comes Before and After

Rick is out looking for Daryl, who has been missing for a couple of days. After killing a few walkers in the woods, Rick finds Daryl at an abandoned campsite and chastises him for running off, despite Rick telling him not to. Daryl says he doesn't answer to Rick. Rick tells Daryl he has people to protect, including Daryl. Daryl says there's a life at stake, but before the conversation can go further, Eugene radios in and warns them walkers are coming. Daryl give Rick his gun and runs across a bridge, just as it breaks, separating them. Daryl tells him to take the path to the right and limps back to the van. Rick fights his way through a group of walkers and makes it the van, where he takes note of Daryl's injured leg, despite Daryl insisting he's fine.

They get back to Alexandria, where Daryl's leg is bandaged. Michonne radios Rick to tell him they got a line on the supplies and asks if he's ready to go on a run. Rick tells Daryl he'll talk when he gets back.

Chapter One: Desperate Days

Rick sits down across from Daryl, asking him why didn't he listen when he told him not to go out. Daryl tells him the girl is still out there and he just need another day to find her. Rick says he's trying to rebuild and need everyone here. Daryl finally gives in and decides to tell Rick what happened.

In a flashback, Daryl has his car run off the road by a herd. As Daryl comes to, he hears Eugene over the radio and sees his car, now on fire, stuck in a tree. Daryl finds a knife in the Shriver State Park, while searching for med. After finding some, he continues moving out onto a highway, on his way to Winchester. Eventually, Daryl finds a gun and continues onward, until he reaches a military blockade, which is soon broken down by the walkers inside. Daryl fights the wave of walkers off and heads towards the town.

In present time, Daryl says he needs to keep looking before the trail runs cold, but Rick refuses to let him leave until he tells him the full story.

Chapter Two: Strange Circumstances

Rick asks Daryl what happened next and Daryl responds he kept walking to Winchester. Rick then asks what the girl has to do with all of this, to which Daryl replies that he wasn't alone when he got to Winchester.

In another flashback, Daryl is heading to the evac zone, hoping to find anything. He makes his way through a bar and then a Big Tony's Express Mart. Once he's outside Big Tony's, he sees a police car suddenly drive by, which starts to draw walkers. Daryl fights off the walkers and makes his way into a coffee shop and through that way, he reaches the evac, where he searches for anything useful. He finds a working radio, where he hears a woman giving instructions to a girl named Daisy. Daryl decides to track down the cop and on his way, he sees the car driving by again, this time on the way to the grocery store, as the cop had instructed Daisy to go. He go through a brewery and finds a lever for the loading bay. Outside, he immediately sees the cop car being tailed by a herd of walkers, but bay gives way and draws them all towards Daryl. He makes a run for it to the grocery store parking lot, where he encounters the driver. She tells him if he wants his friends back, bring Daisy to White Oak, before driving off.

Back in the present, Daryl states that he kept following her, as he needed a ride. Rick tells him he should've kept looking for a different way back, but Daryl brushes him off. Rick says things changed after the war with the Saviors and that he has to change too.

Chapter Three: The Rabbit Hole

Rick tells Daryl that people depend on them now, but Daryl retorts that the Saviors can take care of themselves and Daisy can't. Rick becomes frustrated with Daryl brushing him off and Daryl tells him to keep listening.

In the flashback, Daryl arrives at the entrance of White Oak, however it's closed off, so he goes around, where he finds several bodies of people who have been murdered. He gets in through a hole in the wall that had been blown open. He fights his way through the town, where he arrives at a second gate. He tries to open it, but it doesn't have any power, so he makes his way through the graveyard and a military set up, to get to the generator. He starts it up and pulls the lever again. It opens, releasing a large amounts of walkers, though he manages to kill them all, before finally making his way inside.

Back in the present, Daryl says saving the girl is the right thing to do. Rick tells Daryl that being a driver means choosing the lives of everyone in the community over a single person. Daryl then asks "What if it was Carl?" and that if it was, they'd already be out there looking, before Rick tells him that's enough.

Chapter Four: Around The Bend

Rick asks to hear the rest of [Daryl's story. Daryl goes to speak, but Rick cuts him off, telling him he made a promise and broke it when he left. Rick then asks what happened after he got inside the quarantine zone.

In a flashback, later in the night, Daryl spots a house with lights on. As he starts to make his way towards it, the gate in front of him closes and the driver speaks to him through speakers, demanding the return of Daisy. Daryl makes his way in through a door, finding more dead bodies. He comes a cross dynamite on a stick and uses it to blow a hole in a wall. In one of the houses, Daryl finds his crossbow and in the next house, the place has been turned into a homemade prison cell, with zombified Gold 99 members all around. He continues to traverse through White Oak, killing many more walkers the driver unleashes onto him. Daryl tries to tell him he's not with the Gold 99, but she doesn't believe him and tells him to come around front where she has a shot on him. Daryl does as she says and asks for a ride, but she refuses unless she helps him first.

Back in the present, Rick questions why Daryl would risk Alexandria to help a stranger that tried to kill him. Daryl claims there's more to it than that.

Chapter Five: Roads Less Traveled

Daryl says that if someone here went missing Rick would be looking for them, even pointing out how Rick came looking for him. Rick says that he told the people of Alexandria that he would protect them, to which Daryl points out the hypocrisy. Rick asks Daryl for what the stranger sent him to do. Daryl tells him the Gold 99 took Daisy and wanted Daryl to get her back. He says he traveled to the Gold 99's old compound to find out where they went.

In a flashback, Daryl wakes up in an abandoned waystation, when the driver radios him, asking how he slept. As he gets outside, she tells him he's looking for the water tower. He comes to the entrance of the compound, but it is walled off, so he looks for another way in. On the way, he is ambushed by a small herd of walkers, but manages to kill them all. Daryl then heads for the trainyard, where he finds dozens of bodies hung and many walkers. Once he's nearly out of the yard, he opens a train car, where he is attacked by a spiked walker. He manages to kill it and fights his way through the town. As he gets closer to the water tower, the driver radios and thanks him for doing this, though he claims he's not doing it for free. He asks the driver how to get in and she tells him to try the old gatehouse. He opens the gatehouse door, but it turns out to be booby trapped and dynamite explodes in his face.

As Daryl comes to, he finds himself at the bottom of a pit, as walkers begin to fall in. He manages to get the gate to a drain open and runs in.

Back in the present, Daryl berates for his silence and asks if almost dying trying to find Daisy is worth anything to him. Rick says it might be, but he still needs to hear the rest.

Chapter Six: When Dust Settles

In the present, Rick urges Daryl to stay, saying he needs him to keep order among the Saviors as their new driver after Negan’s defeat. Daryl replies that people will see their driver going to save a girl, but Rick warns he might not come back at all. Daryl insists it’s the right call, but Rick questions how he’s so sure and what he found at the Gold 99 compound. Daryl reveals he found enough evidence to follow a trail.

In a flashback, Daryl exits through a drainage gate and reaches the Gold 99 compound. The driver contacts him, relieved when he responds. Daryl crosses a large container, encounters walkers, and takes them out one by one. The driver mentions that Daisy kept a journal and asks Daryl to find it, hoping it holds clues to her location. Daryl navigates through shops and alleys filled with walkers and dynamite. In an abandoned building, he discovers photos showing that Gold 99 kidnapped people from other communities as hostages and framed their pictures. Daryl moves through more abandoned buildings and walker herds, overcoming them all. In a pub, he finds a map marked with backup compounds and reports it to the driver, who tells him to head to the other side of town. There, Daryl finds an abandoned building with a makeshift prison and a photo of Daisy inside. As he steps outside, a car horn blares, attracting walkers. Daryl realizes the driver knew about the walkers and confronts her. She admits she drew them to the area as revenge for Daisy’s kidnapping. Daryl finds Daisy’s journal, but another walker herd surrounds him. The driver tells him to escape back to where he entered. Daryl escapes successfully.

Back in the present, Daryl tells Rick he shared the info with Carol and says if Rick won’t help, she will. Rick demands Daryl not involve others, especially not behind his back. Daryl argues it’s not Rick’s call, but Rick insists otherwise, saying Daryl can’t expect him to lead while also expecting him not to. Daryl says people can decide for themselves, but Rick stresses that people know sometimes sacrifices are needed for the greater good.

Chapter Seven: The Promise

In the present, Daryl declares he’s going to save Daisy and that Rick can’t stop him. Rick angrily asks if Daryl even listened to him. Daryl says he did and adds that he knows Rick’s already made up his mind. Rick says he knows Daryl thinks he’s wrong, but Daryl cuts him off, saying Rick isn’t wrong, but that doesn’t make him right. Rick asks Daryl why Daisy matters so much to him. Disappointed, Daryl says if Rick hasn’t figured it out by now, he wasn’t listening to the story at all. Rick urges Daryl to just finish the story.

In a flashback, Daryl arrives at the driver’s neighborhood. A loud explosion rocks the area, and when Daryl can’t reach the driver, he rushes in. He fights walkers, enters the barricaded neighborhood, and finds a stash of weapons. After a quick sweep, the driver responds, saying walkers blew up a gas pipe, and she lost her radio in the fight. Daryl asks for the plan, and she says they need to escape. Daryl checks houses, kills walkers, and searches for fuel for the cruiser. During the search, he tells the driver he read Daisy’s journal and that Gold 99 likely moved her to another base. After gathering fuel, Daryl restarts the generator at the driver’s house. Walkers close in, but Daryl kills them. The driver says the garage’s automatic door is not responding and asks him to hold off the walkers. She begs him to leave without her, but he refuses. During the fight, the driver reveals she was bitten during the explosion. Another herd breaches the neighborhood’s walls, and Daryl keeps fighting. The driver says the cruiser is ready and pleads with him to find Daisy. After promising, Daryl takes the cruiser and leaves.

In the present, Rick, Michonne, and Carol gather around Daryl. He tells Rick he knows they’re have business in Alexandria, but he has to do this. Daryl asks if Rick’s coming with him. Michonne and Carol back Daryl. Rick looks at him as the credits roll. It’s later implied Rick joins the group. Daryl thanks him.
