Official discussion thread for one of most amazing, soul-saving Walking Dead characters. From his martial arts to Jesus-like appearance and personality to using Saviors as shields, and coming back armies with tigers.

He is one of my favorite characters in entire Walking Dead Universe.

    • My favorite character in "The Walking Dead." I don't know why I love him so much, but I just do. I guess it is because I relate to his personality a lot. I see Paul living until at least Issue 150.

    • Hate him, worst character ever. Has the worst fans too especially the ones that make their usernames after him, ugh.

    • Jesus is awesome, he's a little too perfect right now, but he probably has some skeletons in the closet.  Hopefully he's gonna get some great development soon seeing as he's been in it for 30 issues with nothing.  He's no Abraham, but he's up there in the best.

    • Another one of these newer "über" characters that can apparently do and survive anything (until Kirkman randomly decides to off them, just because some fans call them untouchable). So a ninja-escape artist that easily dodges bullets. No wonder he has escaped being eaten by zombies. Not very easy to identify with though (even if a number of you might be ninja-escape artist for all I know). Almost as irrirating as that comic-badguy Negan, that also seems to be impervious to bullets (if I remember correctly both Rick and Carl tried to shoot him several times). Never seemed to have a problem hitting their other targets. I love how the series used to portray guns as the great equaliser (very realistic). Being a ninja or some psychotic duche in a leather jacket with a bat is fine and dandy until someone with a gun puts a couple of bullets into your head.

    • Jesus is FUCKING METAL!!!!

    • Jesus is an amazing hand-to-hand combatant. Sadly though, i can see the next big antagonist (after negan is, how he like me to put it? Pretty fuck fuck fuckity fucking dead) crucifying him just cuz of his nickname. I can then see the big bad guy showing rick the zombified, crucified body of jesus, and making a few jesus jokes. I love that guy though, he's super cool, carl likes him (kids are usually good judges of character) and he's very selfless, if i was surrounded by ten walkers, i'd want jesus to back me up. I just feel like jesus will die because, tyreese was slain during the Governor conflict, Abraham was shot through the head with a fucking arrow during the Negan conflict. One thing these three guys have in common? They all were/are rick's right-hand men.

        Loading editor
    • I can see him becoming the next antagonist. Probably won't happen, but I think he fits the fanatic who wants all or nothing role, which might later betray or manipulate Rick to take a more savior like behavior (not as cruel, but just as authoritarian).

    • Really cool character. I would love to see him in the TV series. I have a funny feeling that he will die before the end of All Out War though. Knowing Kirkman, Negan will probably capture him and nail him to a cross to send a message and to mock his nickname.

You realize that is a stereotype, right? Not every gay man you come across is going to be the flamboyant feminine male that the stereotype holds. And, I don't see how this will ruin his character at all. In fact, I think it's an interesting revelation for him.

I'm just saying that for the like 30 something issues he's been around, Jesus has proven time and time again that he's likely the most badass character in the entire comic book. I just can't imagine a gay guy doing shit like taking down both Michonne and Abraham in basically seconds, only using martial arts. And also being able to beat up Negan(!!!) and some of his men, without batting an eye. This all just seems like some gay agenda bs that Kirkman's forcing down our throats, instead of an actually realistic character trait.

Not really. Being gay doesn't equate to being weak what so ever. Some serious stereotyping and homophobia going on over here. Just because Glee shows fifty gay people that fit a stereotype doesn't mean it represents gay people. I did football and I'm gay. Michael Sam (local I live in Columbia) is a huge football player and he's gay.

This has to be one of the most illogical posts I have ever seen on this wiki. You are being very, very sexist and offense. Not all gay people are flamboyant, people who think that need to grow a proper view on the subject before posting. I don't see what the big deal is, way too many people these days complain about the smallest things. Man, just grow up before posting. You do not realize how offence your post is.

So what if I dislike Jesus possibly being homosexual? It just seems like it would be a very odd choice for the character, and I personally don't agree with it. It doesn't mean I'm homophobic or anything. I mean the guy literally looks and sounds and acts like Jesus Christ. Basically having him depicted as a gay man is just asking to cause controversy. I've also always felt that one of TWD's main points is that it's about a group of really cool, iconic, and likable characters. Having so many gay guys in it... just makes it kind of less cool.

um there are a lot more characters in TWD that prefer the opposite sex than their own. Hell, there aren't any lesbians that heve turned up in the comic yet. Seriously, man, get some some toilet paper to whipe that shit from your mouth.

Wow you are really digging yourself into a hole there. By not liking Paul being a homosexual - you are a homophobe - just because you say "no homophobe" doesn't erase the fact that what you just said is offensive. Kirkman might pair off Aaron and Jesus together - either way Jesus being gay changes NOTHING about the character, the group, or the comics. It's not like Kirkman is going to show gay porn or anything. And "so many gay guys in it?" There have only been six gay guys ever. Dexter and Andrew (barely touched upon, purely sexual, both died at the same time), Aaron and Eric (non-stereotypical, kick ass, and Eric just died), Jesus and Alex (Jesus still bad-ass and non-stereotypical as is Alex). Currently there are 3 characters that are gay - and no doubt Alex will die soon. This was good on Kirkman's part. He knew guys like you would think less of Jesus if it was revealed right out front that he was gay. So he let the fan base get large enough to his presence and awesomeness, and finally reveal his sexuality to show that being gay doesn't matter, doesn't lessen any strength or character, and should be more common within society norms. It isn't a gay agenda either.

    • For a start, nobody criticized your liking or disliking of the choice to make him gay. People criticized you for your attempt to justify that by:

      - appealing to stereotypes;

      - talking about a "gay agenda" (your words);

      - general intolerance.

About the guy looking and acting like Jesus Christ, I've got some news for you: hippies look and act like Jesus Christ everywhere, and most hippies have nothing against homosexuality, and some of them are homosexual, too. So, no, this is just another BS argument.

Then again, about the "having so many gays guys makes it less cool", really? You just said your previous posts don't make you an homophobe in the very same paragraph. Do I need to point out the hypocrisy there, or are you able to notice it by yourself?

That's the same thing as saying "I just don't like asians being shove into comic books like this" or "I don't like blonds being shoved into comic books like this". That's stupid to claim there is a limit to the types of characters allowed in the comic.

    • Oh, OK, so now it is about being "politically correct". Do you get mad when Andrea and Rick have sex? Does it change anything on the character, really? Because having sex with someone your same sex or someone with different sex shouldn't be any different, and having monogamic sex (either hetero or homo) is pretty much politically correct. Rick looking out for Carl constantly is politically correct, the way I see it, so it shouldn't happen. Rick shouldn't give half a fuck about Carl. Isn't the concept of a family just politically correct crap, too? Or it just happens that people tend to have stronger feelings for their children than for anyone else? Pretty much the same here, a perfectly natural thing is that you want to hit particularly more people of a given gender. Which gender? Varies from person to person. If everyone have the same orientation in a comic, the same behaviour and the same strengths and weaknesses in a comic, I feel they are being taken from a manual on "how to make your own comic, while keeping it from having an identity". Why can't a badass be gay? Give a me a good reason. Specially in a zombie apocalypse, where there is a sort of natural selection where only the relative badasses survive (for example, the same way a flamboyant feminine gay doesn't seem to be the norm here, we don't see any plastic girls either, nor total geeks, guess why: they probably died soon after the outbreak). We have seen at least 10 badass characters, why can't ONE be gay? What's so wrong with that?

Maybe, just maybe, a character can have its own personality.

The only thing is Alex and why its been a secret for so long? Does Paul fear being openly gay will scrutinize his role as leader of Hilltop or do people know and accept him?

Bro, I seriously think that paul and Alex are just fuck buddies. After all he said he had nothing left at Hilltop except from his books. Alos Paul didn't seem too excited to see him when he was reading his non Goosebump book.

Maybe but Alex claimed they haven't talked in forever and Paul seems tired and stressed, but still open to cuddling with Alex. Possibly a strained relationship. That was one of the negatives that occurred within Aaron and Eric's relationship. Aside from Aaron being overprotective sometimes and Eric sneaking the booze, those two never really fought. All the major couples in the comics have had their fair strains. It would be interesting to see Paul and Alex in a relationship that's under strain - maybe if Paul is still closeted Alex could be getting frustrated with him. Or like what you said - that Alex wants to be more than just fuck buddies.

Maybe Paul is only into Alex because he thinks he's the only gay guy in the world left, but since Aaron is single and when he's done grieving, Paul might sweep on Aaron who appears more level headed and equal to Paul rather than Alex.

The comic shows the personal life of their characters, and thus shows us who they fuck, deal with it already. Some people like to fuck people with the same genitalia, some doesn't, nobody should try to force others to share their taste. Depicting it is not trying to force anyone to share the same tastes.

Biracial relations was a huge controversial issue of the nation fifty years ago and hell still is one today (with the damn Cheerio commercial). I have no idea how those characters being gay takes away from their character. Literally the only difference would be who they fuck. Are you really that invested in your favourite characters sexual relations that you would dislike them if they started swinging the other way?

Let's see, you basically just said you wouldn't like any central character to be gay. I'm starting to notice a pattern here.

Then, you directly stated having more fans is more important than any artistic integrity the writers could have, as they'd base their character choices only on the number of fans they create or make them lose.

Then, you get to talk about how politics shouldn't get into comics.

Homophobia is against Wikia's terms of use (however I'm not for banning you...at least not at the moment), and anon is short for anonymous, which is what you are, an "anonymous contributor".

    • In all seriousness, I wouldn't call you a homophobe if you'd dislike the idea of Dean from Supernatural being gay, because it's actually a big deal for his character, it would change a lot (although really not as much as if he suddenly forgets he'd keep open the gates of hell if that means he gets to keep his little brother; that would literally break the character). A big part of his character, specially the comic releases he has, are about picking girls up, so he would be kind of out of tune with his own character if he suddenly becomes gay. But in the walking dead, I can't really see any character, except maybe the Governor (because of the raping Michone arc) and Negan (because of the whole machismo act) where who they like to take their pants off for is relevant to character development.

Is Jesus any less badass because he likes dicks (or male butts, I don't know)? Does it change the fact he can kick Negan's ass? Nope, it doesn't. You are just mad because he doesn't like vaginas as much as he likes kicking bad guys. It doesn't even crush your hopes for a particular OTP (I could at some point understand it, if it were because of that), as there was none shown for Jesus before. That's why you are being called an homophobe, because you dislike him being gay just because you don't like the idea of a gay ass-kicker, and you actually try to disguise it as something rational.

On the show, I actually didn't read that part correctly, my bad. I thought the "bringing to the show" thing was metaphorical, and that we were still talking about the comic. I am sad to agree with you there. Judith surviving the assault to the prison is all I need to believe you.

Biracial relations was a huge controversial issue of the nation fifty years ago and hell still is one today (with the damn Cheerio commercial). Were you upset when Tyreese and Carol got together? Or Heath and Denise? Or Glenn and Maggie? Or Tyreese and Karen? Do you feel like Kirkman was pushing the "biracial agenda" on us? Do the comics suck because of that?
No, I have no problem with biracial couples, and honestly I don't have a problem with Aaron and Eric (even if I do think it's gross.) What I really have a problem with is Jesus being gay. I mean why Jesus? He was so cool.
And the fact that you think him being gay makes him less cool means you are a homophobic douche.
Oh well, I guess I'm a homophobic douche apparently. I just don't like gay Jesus, just like I wouldn't like a gay Tyreese, Abraham, or Negan. At least I can take pleasure in the fact that if Jesus was to be brought to the show, that they'd never make him gay, because of how many fans they would lose.

I have no idea how those characters being gay takes away from their character. Literally the only difference would be who they fuck. Are you really that invested in your favourite characters sexual relations that you would dislike them if they started swinging the other way?

      I don't know. Probably.

You should probably not read this comic anymore, go back to the 50s even. A magical time where there were no woman leaders, interacial couples or badass gay people.

    • Mrugiero wrote: In all seriousness, I wouldn't call you a homophobe if you'd dislike the idea of Dean from Supernatural being gay, because it's actually a big deal for his character, it would change a lot (although really not as much as if he suddenly forgets he'd keep open the gates of hell if that means he gets to keep his little brother; that would literally break the character).

Yeah, I suppose I can agree with this pretty much. Say I'm wrong as much as you want, I guess I just like the more traditional hero character. Jesus has seemed to be the nicest, most heroic, and most morally true character met in the comic and on top of that he's a total badass. Overall, it felt like a breath of fresh air to the bleak and nearly hopeless world of the Walking Dead. I just couldn't believe that they had to end up making him so flawed.

Also, I almost always want the show to be as similar to the comic that it can be as well. But in this case, I'm kind of glad that it's different.

Ha, we all know Naruto is going to end up with either Sakura or Hinata. Naruto and Sasuke are just friends, nothing more, it's pretty obvious. They never include gays in those types of animes. Also back on topic, maybe he's just bi, and he's trying to figure out which side he's leaning more towards. I know that's not likely, but it gives me some hope, I guess.

The fandom ships Rick and Daryl frequently. There are hundreds of male pairings in the fandom, comic....show...videogame..... The entire freaking fandom is pretty much the gayest thing ever.. (In the best kind of way.)  The fandom would fucking triple if a male gay character (we have lesbians already, and nobody complained about that) was introduced.

I never tell people to fuck off...but please....Do.

(And, here is some colored Gay Jesus to add to my support of this great and awesome character.)

    • Okey... getting out of hand. I have two cents, and I'd like to say something. Everyone... please stop taking this so personally. If the anon doesn't like Jesus being gay, then he doesn't like him being gay. He may come off a bit hostile, but that doesn't give people the right to call him homophobic.

Also, I'm not even sure about how I feel about Jesus being gay. I mean, I get that there was no mention of it, but a hint or two might've supported it. It seems a bit.... thrown in there. No doubt Kirkman will say "I've planned this all along", but most likely he didn't. It's not "out of character" in any way, but it feels as though it's just a storyline that Kirkman has thrown in to make Paul more human, and I can see (on other forums, not this one) that people are being called homophobic just because they don't like him.

Anywho, you might not like that the anon doesn't like Paul being gay, but to throw names around and calling him a "homophobic douche", it's just childish. :/

Well the Japanese culture, isn't really tolorant of gays, from what i hear from people who live in Japan and sites like socialprogress they aren't totally welcomed. and USA is ranked 6th on the list which is 5 places to low if you ask me.  Jesus, could be BI would it matter ? NO . He still has Morals, he still a good person. i hate this myth making it sound like, only striaght people can have morals. Anyone can have morals. Rules don't  dictake morals,

He's homophobic. He has stated stereotypes and offensive remarks numerous times about gays. And Kirkman has a reason for doing this - but most of all I think this helps normalize homosexuality within literature. We think nothing of Rick or Andrea or Maggie being heterosexual - and now we have a well-established character that just so happens to be gay - and he is no less of a character.

It's not "out of character" in any way, but it feels as though it's just a storyline that Kirkman has thrown in to make Paul more human, and I can see (on other forums, not this one) that people are being called homophobic just because they don't like him.

Well then... I dunno. I wouldn't call him homophobic. To be homophobic you'd have to be more agressive and to hate gay people with a passion. I may have missed something in the conversation, but either way, I don't really think namecalling is okay. Not really though. Homophobic has no different of a definition than racist or sexist. If it were revealed that Rick Grimes came from a biracial family (black dad, white mom) and he were to say "Ew - now he's a black guy - he is lesser now." He would be called racist. Besides, calling gays disgusting is aggressive.

Biracial relations was a huge controversial issue of the nation fifty years ago and hell still is one today (with the damn Cheerio commercial). Do the comics suck because of that?

No, I have no problem with biracial couples, and honestly I don't have a problem with Aaron and Eric (even if I do think it's gross.) What I really have a problem with is Jesus being gay. I mean why Jesus? He was so cool.

    • Why do you all care so much about who Paul chooses to sleep with? A person's sexual preference has no bearing whatsoever on their personality or physical strength.

I mean honestly. Okay, so he's gay. So what? Ezekiel's straight.

Well, I'm a straight guy, I think it's perfectly normal to be kind of grossed out by gay guys because I can't really understand it. Just because I tolerate it, doesn't mean I'm going to totally accept it with open arms.

Yeah, there are two ways you can see that. The way you saw it is probably what most people see, and I understand why you're angry about it. But, and this is just how I see it, he wasn't say homosexuality is disgusting, more like saying, men on men is gross (I'm so tired right now I have no idea how that sentence sounded).

let's claim down people. both sides are being hostile.....

I believe he needs, to choose his words better. Saying Jesus, isn't a cool now that he's gay. isn't the thing to say. however saying he's homophobic isn't the phase to use. isn't like saying he doesn't want gays to have rights. he just don't want them in the comics..   what he's saying though doesn't make much sense though, gay people eixst dude. Paul is a badass,  as the people before me said you. don't see any non baddass characters personally i see Alex as week, he doesn't seem as fit as Paul,Rick,Aaron, ect.

My friend you do sound like, you're a tad of homophobic as much as i hate using that word. but gays being in comics is fine, many DC and Marvel heroes are gay, btw.  though they might not exist on new earth, they still have gay versions of some of their many stream Heroes.

When it's a major controversial issue of the nation, it kind of is.
      Here^^^^^ is what he said
Yeah, there are two ways you can see that. The way you saw it is probably what most people see, and I understand why you're angry about it. But, and this is just how I see it, he wasn't say homosexuality is disgusting, more like saying, men on men is gross (I'm so tired right now I have no idea how that sentence sounded).
I think we should just move one, and to be perfectly honest, we should delete all of these comments. It's all down to a matter of opinion, and on this wiki especially, opinions are important.
But he is saying the comic would become less cool with gay characters. That is called being homophobic.
But, what are we gonna do? Ban him? You can tell he's trying not to offend anyone, even if he's failing at it. I think we should just let this go, no point in arguing.
If you read what I said above, I am not for banning him (even though being homophobic is against Wikia's terms of use).

    • Narutorulez, I don't think you can consider tolerant someone who wants gays outside of culture (and comics are a form of culture), as it's practically promoting it to become taboo. It's not alright to say "it's alright to be gay, but I don't want to know they exist", it's pretty much the same thing as "you can be gay, but you damn better be gay secretly". If we are to be prude, then don't talk about sex altogether. But if sex is something we can talk about, gay people should be allowed to share their experience too, and this means it will appear in culture, comics included.

On being a homophobe, I do consider the guy a homophobe, because of the things he said. Maybe you feel it is too much, but you then I should remind you he didn't state they should have no rights. Being a homophobe doesn't necessarily means the guy will go to extremes, it just means he hates gays for being gays, at least at some degree (or maybe fears, phobias work both ways), without a real reason. All of his/her comments lead to think he dislikes gays for being gay, so yeah, he is a homophobe. Nobody suggested he'd go to extremes, and it is not needed to be disrespectful. For a start, considering they should limit their roles in comics to basically the stereotypes is disrespectful enough, and suggests censorship, which is bad enough.

I don't have a problem with gay people in real life. I just don't like it being shoved in my face all the time, like what the media's been doing lately. I also just feel like this is the wrong path for the character. It seems like it's all just a publicity stunt, Kirkman took what was essentially the most popular character at the moment and made him gay just to get attention. I don't think it's going to help the story at all.

      1. First of all, you contradicted yourself big time in the first two sentences.  If you have no problem with them, you also dont have a opinion about them. But you clearly do, and not an positive one. Also, secondly.... being shoved in your face would be more like... Jesus and Alex making out in front of everyone and saying  ' mMMMMmmmh, look how fucking gay we are. .

Not them cuddling up when reading Gullivers travels.

      2. Because this has really been frontpage news, huh?

Yeah, I can tell that all the homophobes where I live (where we have not even got to this issue yet) is just going D:< over this. Yup.

I can feel the attention it has been given in the international news. :I

If it bothers you (and clearly, nobody else) then it's not Kirkman's fault. It's yours.

As for not having a problem with gay people in real life but with them appearing in central roles comics (or "being shoved in your face") I already told you what I think. On being a publicity stunt, yeah, maybe it's that, who knows, I don't care. I share the opinion that it doesn't help the story, but mostly because I don't really see their romantic stories as really that relevant to the core story. It doesn't hurt the story, either, IMO.

EDIT: Just a clarification, when I say "their romantic stories" I mean in general. I really don't care that much about couples in TWD, I think that's mostly flavour and adding some humanity to the characters, but I mainly center in the current conflicts when reading the comics or watching the series.

Do you realize the Jesus in the comic is NOT (like in, a term for negation of a proposition) the biblical figure? Do you realize that people, even in real life, gets nicknames based in looks only? Now, guess why they call him Jesus. Just as a hint, it's explained when he introduces himself... It is not because he kicked the merchants out of the temple.

Attraction to another makes perfect sense, he's called Jesus due to his appearance resembling the biblical figure, what's not to make sense about it? Him being gay? Homosexuality makes sense, some people decide it, others it's natural, seriously what's not to get? Someone who resembles a known figure in religion being homosexual? Jesus himself was accepting on whoever the hell the person was, he chilled with hookers and thieves.

And just a thought, I honestly think this thread should be closed until this stuff about Jesus being gay dies down...seriously.
