Unexpected Survival is a recurring theme in The Walking Dead. On a number of occasions, characters unexpectedly survive an event that was believed to have killed them, or came close to killing them. This can be something that happens within the matter of a single episode, occurs over the course of a few episodes, or has a character believed to be dead for years only to unexpectedly resurface.

Rick Grimes survives a gunshot wound and wakes up a month later, despite the hospital being abandoned and the world overrun by the undead. Against all odds, he is reunited with his family. (Issue 1) Tyreese is discovered to have survived being swarmed by walkers in the prison gym, which the survivors were attempting to clear out a day earlier. (Issue 16) The Governor survives his torture at the hands of Michonne, being on the edge of death for about a week, and later attacks the Prison with the Woodbury Army. (Issue 42) After seemingly dying from his gunshot wound and reanimating, Rick is revealed to be alive, just delirious. (Issue 50) Maggie stops breathing after hanging herself, but unexpectedly springs back to life after almost being put down by Abraham. (Issue 56) Carl survives being shot in the head. (Issue 83) During the battle at Hilltop, Dwight shoots Rick with a crossbow, presumably infecting him. In the following issue, however, it is revealed that the arrow wasn't tainted, allowing Rick to survive. (Issue 123, Issue 124)

Kenny is believed to have died in Savannah, Georgia, getting overwhelmed by a herd while either mercy killing Ben Paul or rescuing Christa. (Determinant) (No Time Left) Clementine later discovers that her friend had somehow survived and made his way to Moonstar Lodge. (A House Divided) Jane claims to have killed AJ or at least left him to die in the middle of a blizzard. It's later revealed that Jane had faked AJ's death in order to provoke Kenny and to prove a point about how dangerous he is. (No Going Back) After getting separated from each other for years, the García family believes each other to be dead until they reunite outside of New Richmond. (Ties That Bind - Part 2) After joining the New Frontier, AJ becomes sick, and Dr. Paul Lingard insists that there's nothing that can be done for him. Clementine steals the last of the group's Vancomycin and injects AJ with it despite Lingard's insistence that it was wasted on AJ and that he will die regardless or accidentally breaks the medicine after relenting in not giving it to AJ. (Determinant) Clementine is banished for this, and AJ is taken from her. David later reveals that, much to the New Frontier's surprise, AJ bounced back, and he ultimately survived his illness. Clementine develops a severe infection in her amputated leg due to her troubles with her prosthetic leg. The infection sends Clementine into a coma for 36 days before she recovers with the help of Miss Moro who was a pathologist before the world ended. Miss Moro later tells Clementine that she was nearly septic, and Miss Moro didn't have much in the way of medicine so she's surprised that Clementine pulled through, attributing it in part to Clementine's own strong will. Miss Moro explains that she had used rest, fluids and a paste for the infected area that had helped Amir twice before to treat Clementine's infection. She agrees to teach Clementine how to make the paste. (Book Two) When the island community is overrun by a massive herd, Clementine fears that Ricca has perished and become a walker after spotting her amongst the herd. However, Ricca unexpectedly reveals herself to be still alive, much to Clementine's relief, having covered herself in walker guts in order to safely pass through the herd unnoticed. After being left at Harrison Memorial Hospital in a coma by Shane at the beginning of the outbreak, (TS-19) Rick Grimes is believed to be dead by his wife Lori and son Carl until he arrives at the Atlanta Survivor Camp. (Days Gone Bye-Tell It to the Frogs) After Glenn, Merle, Andrea, Jacqui and Morales get trapped in Bradbury's by a massive herd, their friends back at camp think that they ultimately perished as the others can't do anything to help them. Following the group's escape and return to camp with Rick's help, aside from Merle, Dale Horvath laughs and tells them that "I thought we had lost you folks for sure." (Guts-Tell It to the Frogs) Andrew is believed to have been devoured by walkers when he was locked out of the prison. (Sick) When Andrew causes the prison to become overrun with walkers, Carol Peletier is feared to have perished along with Lori and T-Dog with a grave even being dug for her. (Killer Within-Say the Word) However, Daryl later finds Carol still alive in the lower levels of the prison. (Hounded) Baby Judith is apparently killed when walkers overrun the prison in the aftermath of the Governor's attack. (Too Far Gone) It's later revealed that Judith was saved by Tyreese, (Inmates) and she is reunited with her family following the events at Terminus. (No Sanctuary) Martin forces Tyreese to take on a small herd of walkers unarmed. Tyreese unexpectedly survives and overpowers Martin, having defeated the walkers with just his bare hands. (No Sanctuary) Much to the shock of Rick's Group, several residents of Terminus survive its fall. (Strangers-Four Walls and a Roof) Surrounded by a massive herd of walkers, Nicholas commits suicide while Glenn is apparently devoured. (Thank You) Although Glenn is believed to be dead for an extended period of time by his friends, (Here's Not Here-Always Accountable) he had actually managed to survive by hiding under a dumpster until the herd had moved on. (Heads Up) Glenn later returns to Alexandria just in time to help save the community as it's overrun by a massive herd. (No Way Out) Roman survives being shot by Carol, eventually tracking her down and almost killing her. (Last Day on Earth) Ezekiel, Alvaro, Jerry and Shiva unexpectedly survive the massacre of the Kingdom's army by the Saviors at the Chemical Plant Outpost. (Monsters-Some Guy) During the Siege of the Sanctuary, Negan is feared to be dead by the Saviors until he returns, having managed to escape from the herd alongside Gabriel by covering themselves in walker guts. (The Big Scary U) After being betrayed and shot by Dwight during the Bombing of Alexandria, Laura vanishes. (How It's Gotta Be) Dwight is later informed that Laura has failed to return to the Sanctuary, suggesting that might not have survived. (Dead or Alive Or) Negan eventually finds Laura walking down the road while he's driving back to the Sanctuary from the Heaps, having survived and eventually made her way back home, although Negan keeps Laura's return quiet at first after learning about Dwight's betrayal from her. (The Lost and the Plunderers) It's later revealed that she had successfully hidden from the Saviors by playing dead amongst the corpses. (Still Gotta Mean Something) After Henry disappears following the Tainted Weapons Massacre, (Do Not Send Us Astray) he is believed to be dead by Morgan after Morgan and Carol are unable to find any sign of him aside from Henry's staff sticking out of a walker. Although Morgan gives up the search, Carol eventually finds Henry to be still alive and cornered by walkers. After being reunited with Henry, Morgan is relieved to have been wrong about his young friend's fate. (Still Gotta Mean Something) Following the explosion at the bridge, Rick is apparently killed. However, Rick actually survives, albeit badly wounded, and he is rescued by Jadis who trades Rick to the CRM for a new life. (What Comes After) Michonne later discovers Rick's survival after finding his belongings where Rick had thrown them onto Boat 672. (What We Become, Rest in Peace) Judith eventually reveals Rick's survival to Daryl and Carol. (Rest in Peace) Michonne is shocked to be reunited with Jocelyn, having believed her old friend to have died in the outbreak. (Scars) Magna and Connie are feared to be dead after a cave collapse. (Squeeze, Stalker) While Magna is later revealed to have survived, covering herself in walker guts and hiding amongst Alpha's herd until the Fall of Hilltop, she doesn't know if Connie had survived as well. (Walk With Us) Connie is later found alive by Virgil near Oceanside (A Certain Doom) while Keith reveals having seen her alive to Carol, Aaron, Jerry and Lydia. (Out of the Ashes) Following Connie and Virgil's fight with the Ferals, she is finally reunited with her sister Kelly and returns to Alexandria. (On the Inside) During the Battle for the Commonwealth, Rosita Espinosa is piled on by a number of zombies and apparently devoured. However, Rosita unexpectedly survives, fighting her way free and escaping. Rosita later privately shows Eugene that she was bitten during the altercation which she ultimately dies of. Daniel Salazar apparently dies when he sets the Abigail Vineyard on fire. (Shiva) However, Daniel survives and makes his way to the Gonzalez Dam where he is eventually reunited with Victor Strand who is surprised but relieved to see that Daniel had survived. Daniel explains to Efrain Morales that he snapped out of his delusional state in the middle of the fire after hearing Ofelia's voice calling out to him. Despite being surrounded by the fire and the celling collapsing around him, Daniel managed to fight his way out, although he's not sure how, leaving Daniel with burn injuries and a fear that he had killed Ofelia in the fire. (TEOTWAWKI-100) Daniel later tells Strand that he was spared, although Daniel doesn't know why. Daniel suggests that maybe it was the Devil who spared him so that he would continue to stay in Purgatory with Strand. (Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame) Madison's Group apparently presumes Daniel to have perished in the destruction of the dam as Strand is surprised to find him alive years later. (Sleigh Ride, Here to Help) Alicia, Luciana and Strand tell John Dorie that June had died when the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium was destroyed, much to his grief. (Buried) The group is shocked when June is revealed to be alive and with the Vultures at Ashburn Race Track. (Just in Case-The Wrong Side of Where You Are Now) June later explains that she had run back inside the stadium to get medical supplies while everyone else fled, but was forced to flee herself when the stadium became overrun by walkers, joining the Vultures for survival. (No One's Gone) June reveals that she had thought that her friends had all perished when the stadium fell. (No One's Gone) Cole, Douglas, Vivian and the other stadium residents all apparently die while trying to flee when the stadium falls to the Vultures, leaving Nick, Alicia, Luciana and Strand as the only survivors of the community. (No One's Gone) Years later, Alicia unexpectedly encounters Cole again who reveals that most if not all of the residents had actually made it out thanks to Madison, although a number of them were killed by another hostile group a few weeks later. The survivors became a group of bandits that are killed by their own reanimated victims while trying to kill Alicia, Dakota and Teddy. (Mother) After Grace falls ill, it's feared to be Grace's radiation exposure catching up to her leaving Grace with not much time to live. Even using an ultrasound machine, Grace's friends are unable to determine the source of her illness. However, much to the shock and delight of Morgan Jones, Grace is discovered by Dr. Holt to be pregnant and malnourished instead of being terminally ill. (Today and Tomorrow-End of the Line) Morgan is shot by Virginia and left for dead as a small herd approaches him in Humbug's Gulch, apparently leading to his demise. (End of the Line) However, Morgan is rescued by what is later revealed to be Dakota. (The End Is the Beginning, The Door) John is shocked to find Morgan still alive at McNeill's Bait & Beer, explaining that everyone had heard the shot the night at Humbug's Gulch and assumed that he had died. (The Door) Following an attack by the Doomsday Cult, Grace stops breathing and apparently dies before unexpectedly reviving after Morgan had stopped his efforts to resuscitate her. (In Dreams) Strand abandons Morgan to fight several zombified USS Pennsylvania crewmembers on his own, leading to his apparent demise. However, Morgan somehow manages to survive and single-handedly beat the walkers, returning just in time to save Strand from Dakota. (USS Pennsylvania) When Teddy's Secret Bunker collapses on them, it appears like John Dorie Sr. and June are going to perish. After John awakens in Strand's Tower, June explains that their gas masks had kept them from suffocating until Strand's Rangers had found and rescued John and June. (Cindy Hawkins) Alicia unexpectedly survives the infection from her walker bite that had been plaguing Alicia for months and brought her close to death. (Amina) June later attributes Alicia's ability to fight off the infection for so long to Alicia having been previously exposed to high levels of radiation, although she was unaware that Alicia had actually survived her illness in the end. (Blue Jay) Having apparently sacrificed herself to allow her family to escape when the stadium was destroyed, (No One's Gone) Madison Clark unexpectedly survives, although the fire that she had started leaves Madison with lung damage and the need to use an oxygen tank occasionally. When asked how she had survived by Morgan, Madison simply quips that "I'm full of surprises." (Gone) Daniel is shocked to see Madison again almost 12 years after their last meeting, having heard of her supposed death, although Daniel admits that he had often considered the possibility that Madison was still alive. Daniel wryly notes that "it looks like we all have nine lives." (Odessa) June is shocked to see Daniel alive after reuniting with him 7 years after they had first arrived at PADRE, having apparently believed Daniel to have perished due to PADRE abandoning him because of Daniel's age. (Odessa) Troy Otto is apparently killed by Madison when she bashes him twice in the head with a hammer followed by his body getting washed out in the destruction of the Gonzalez Dam. (Things Bad Begun-Sleigh Ride) Over a decade later, much to the shock of Madison and Strand, Troy is revealed to have survived. Troy explains that he had survived the blows to his head, although they had left Troy blind in one eye. (Anton) Troy was then rescued from the dam's rubble by his future wife Serena. (Iron Tiger) Madison's Group are shocked to learn from Troy that Alicia had actually survived her bite infection, but Troy claims to have killed Alicia since then. (Anton-Iron Tiger) Upon being reunited with Madison, a shocked Luciana comments that had Madison died a long time ago. Madison quips that "I've been getting that a lot lately." Charlie is similarly shocked to see Madison still alive. (Iron Tiger) Seven years after leaving Texas, Charlie is revealed to still be alive despite having seemingly been terminally ill from radiation poisoning. Charlie explains that, unlike June at the Tower, PADRE had what they needed to cure her illness. (Iron Tiger) After being saved by Alicia's Followers driving the SWAT van, Strand initially thinks that Ada is Alicia. (Keeping Her Alive) Ada reveals to Strand that Alicia's fever had stopped and, after going back to the Tower, Alicia had found dozens of survivors who had responded to Alicia's message and lost hope when they saw the Tower on fire. By going back into the Tower and taking fuel from the basement generators, Alicia was able to drive everyone out of the nuclear wasteland in the SWAT van. (Keeping Her Alive) Having watched Madison's interview with Al so many times that the tape eventually wore out, Ada, Della, and Sara are in awe to find their idol still alive and to have the chance to meet her in person. The group had believed Madison to be dead until they had heard her message on the repeater network. (Keeping Her Alive) Ben Krennick reveals to Madison and Troy that Madison had survived the destruction of the stadium by climbing into the stadium's water truck which had been parked near the gate by Douglas in an attempt fight the fire that the Vultures had started outside. Having heard Madison's last message to her kids, Shrike and Ben had found and rescued her from the truck, knowing that if Madison was willing to sacrifice herself to save her kids, then she'd be willing to do anything for them which Shrike and Ben could use to manipulate Madison to do their bidding. (Fighting Like You) Russell reveals to Madison that Alicia might actually still be alive as Russell had lied to Troy about finding her dead following a fight between Alicia and Troy that had left them both seriously wounded. (The Road Ahead) After Tracy Otto shoots Madison, the little girl believes that she had killed her with even Madison believing that she was dying. However, Madison survives because Alicia's St. Christopher's medallion stops the bullet. (The Road Ahead) Madison is once again believed to have died, this time sacrificing herself to destroy a herd so that everyone at PADRE can escape. However, Madison survives the fort's destruction, having taken cover in her old cell, and she is rescued from the rubble by Tracy. Tracy tells Madison that the oxygen tank that Madison was wearing had kept Madison from suffocating to death until Tracy could dig her out. (The Road Ahead) Much to Madison and Alicia's mutual shock, they are both reunited with each other, particularly as Alicia had believed her mother to be dead for nearly a decade. Alicia explains that she had survived Troy's attack, but chosen not to reveal that she was still alive to everyone. Alicia had tracked her mother down after hearing the story of what had happened at PADRE and what Madison had done. (The Road Ahead) While the rest of Madison's group believes her to be dead, Madison and Alicia leave Strand a blue bonnet as a sign that they're still alive and allow Strand to glimpse them in his truck's mirror. In a letter to Michonne, Rick explains that he hadn't expected to survive the events at the bridge, only to wake up in a military hospital, having been taken by the CRM who had treated Rick's injuries and saved his life. (Years) Michonne searches for Rick after unexpectedly discovering that he had survived the events at the bridge six years before. After giving up the search, the two are unexpectedly reunited. (Gone) After the crash of their helicopter into Greenwood, Rick and Michonne are believed to be dead by the CRM, giving them the chance to return home to Alexandria. (What We) However, Jadis deduces their survival and hunts the couple down in Yellowstone National Park, leading to her death. Although this gives Rick and Michonne the chance to return home once they destroy Jadis' dossier on Alexandria, the two decide to return to Cascadia Forward Operating Base in order to bring down the CRM. (Become) Both Major General Beale and Pearl Thorne are surprised but pleased to see that Rick had unexpectedly survived. Rick portrays himself as the sole survivor of the crash, having been saved by Michonne whom he lies died along with the helicopter crew. However, Thorne later realizes the truth after deducing who Michonne really is. (The Last Time)

• In some cases, characters who have "died" only to return years later receive an "In Memoriam" segment on Talking Dead.
  • Notably, Daniel Salazar did not receive an "In Memoriam" credit for his supposed death in "Shiva", suggesting his survival.
• Following Glenn Rhee's "death" in "Thank You", Steven Yeun is removed from the opening credits in "Here's Not Here", "Always Accountable", and "Now" in order to hide the surprise of Glenn's survival. He is later reinstated with Glenn's return in "Heads Up".
• Madison Clark's survival and impending return was revealed by actress Kim Dickens on Talking Dead following "PADRE".
• Daniel Sharman wasn't credited until the end credits of "Anton" in order to hide the surprise of his return.
